Give me a song...
Give us a song….. Even better, show me a singer who can give us a song. While you quickly get down to working on it, we run though a in-your-face fact. With every second Punjabi singer now acting in films, we wonder who is left behind, recording in the studios. With almost every singer, turning to a Mohawk hairstyle, we would want to know who is looking after their own singing style.
Barring a few singers (who of course have acted in films also) like Gurdas Maan who maintains a beautiful balance between acting and singing, Amrinder Gill who doesn't sign a film because he wants to concentrate on his music album, just about every singer is rehearsing dialogues on the sets. If this is the situation then who will look after the Punjabi music? All singers liked to be labeled as 'singer-actors', acknowledging their first love 'singing' first. But when it comes to cutting albums, they have found a way out - singles! Who has the time for an album, the best way is to release a single. Music director, Gurmeet Singh expresses his view candidly, "Singers are the main culprits, they are spoiling the scenario of the music and the film industry both. Barring a few singers like Master Saleem, Nachhatar Gill, Kamaal Khan, Navraj and Yuvraj Hans who still focus on singing and releasing albums, everyone else is busy acting." Gurmeet Singh sites the example of the renowned Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan. "The entire industry needs to learn from him. He has always given singing importance, and nothing could affect his ibaadat." The singing department in the Punjab music industry is almost empty. "I think now the music directors will sing. Wait for a month or two, the way the Punjabi film industry is falling, all the singers will soon return to cutting albums." There is no denying the fact that Punjabi singers have shown a clear cut preference towards acting. They do test their vocal chords once a while during the live shows or while releasing a single. Gippy Grewal who has recently released a hit track Hello Hello makes every effort to stay connected to singing. "This is my passion, because of the time constraint, I haven't been able to focus much on singing, but I would be doing it pretty regularly now." Of course, the release of private albums has decreased considerably. At the same time, this trend is replaced by a new fad as singer actor Bali Riar shares. "For the last one year, we are following the trend in UK, which is cutting singles. The market for albums fell down due to piracy, slowly the singers moved to acting, and then to releasing singles," he says. Bali is coming up with his single Just Friends next month and he feels this is something that gives a singer visibility. "A singer gets to sing two songs in a movie, and comes up with two three singles each backed by a video in a year, isn't that good." All isn't lost; we still have singer actors like Amrinder Gill who did not sign any film because he wanted to do his album first. "Singing is my passion, for me releasing an album is more important than anything else." After the success of Munde Cool Daddy Fool, Amrinder did not sign any film. "I had to finish my album first." The album releases in November, and Amrinder is shooting the video for it. "I will only sign a film after the album," he adds. Roshan Prince credits his film career to singing. "I got films because of singing, music is my first love and I would go on with it." Roshan Prince has recently shot for Amit Prasher's Ishq Brandy and at the same time he is coming up with two private albums. "One is based on commercial music that releases this year, and the second one I plan to release next year is on Punjabi ghazals." With the Punjabi film industry going through a 'will they make it till the end or wont they' phase, there is a possibility that we might see some new Punjabi music albums lying on the shelves of music stores. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

First cut
She has left the 'what next' question travel with the tide of time. A strong feeling pushes her to take a decision for her better future, but then much is at stake. Baljinder Kaur, a school teacher at Hisar is busy attending phone calls. Those of who have seen the trailers of the soon to be released Bollywood movie Shahid, phone her to congratulate her work in the movie. Baljinder plays Ammi, Shahid's (the protagonist) mother in the film. "Oh, they have just seen the trailer, picture to abhi baaki hai," she breaks into a throaty laugh.
The much talked about Shahid is a biograohical film directed by Hansal Mehta and produced by Anurag Kashyap. The film is based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist, Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in 2010 in Mumbai. The film had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International film festival. The film was selected for distribution by UTV Motion pictures and is set for an October 18 release. Baljinder who originally comes from Jalandhar did not attend the premier; there are other reasons about the film that excites her. "I have done my MA Theatre from Punjab University, thereafter I got admission in NSD and I worked in the NSD repertoire company on a six years contract. The casting director of Shahid, Mukesh Chabbra had seen my work before. He suggested my name to tie director and this is how I got the role." Baljinder makes no effort to hide her excitement, she knows what she has done is worth talking about. "I was selected without a single audition," her voice cracks with excitement. Baljinder shot for her role in Mumbai, counting it as the best experience ever. One is reminded of the fact that she is school teacher, so did she handle the first hurdle - taking leaves from the school where she teaches dramatics. "I managed somehow. For the first shoot, I was lucky enough that the school was closed for holidays and for the second shoot I had to take leave," she says. This is something that she wants to delve into more. She is eager to talk about her role, the challenges and the fun part of it. "Shahid is my first film, which meant I had to give more than what was expected of me. I play Shahid's mother in the film. I have done theater that helped me get under the skin of the character, nonetheless it was challenging," she adds towards the end. Baljinder has already shot for a short film Rupali, and with offers already pouring; in she has a tough choice to make - whether or not she should now move to Mumbai. "My husband Brijesh has also done theatre and we plan to start an acting and dance academy called NIDA pretty soon. Besides, we also own a costume house here. Since I moved with my husband to his hometown Hisar after marriage, I don't know if I should leave it now. I might not," she replies after some thought, immediately adding to it. "I might even…," she dives into silence. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Street smart
Amarjot Kaur There is something about Sohnie that keeps Angad Anand rather amused as he romances the notion of having her around. Perhaps, it is her 'nakhras', of which he speaks so fondly, or probably, it is just her sheer presence, that translates into their expression of togetherness that further speaks volumes about their bond. "Oh! She is the prettiest little thing I have ever known and we could not have made it more obvious with the name-Sohnie (which means beautiful in Punjabi)," says Angad, who swears by Sohnie's looks. "It would be one's greatest folly to assume that because Sohnie is a Mongrel, the Indian street dog, she would be 'street' too. She takes to comfort more seriously than any other living being that I have come across," he affirms with a rather stern voice as he weaves a beautiful mosaic of memory while visiting their first meeting. Love me, love my dog "Sohnie was a stray dog and she came along with our new neighbours, probably she just followed them and she was so pretty that everyone nicknamed her 'Sohnie'. She stationed herself outside our house, where we had made a kennel for her, and because we kept getting fond of her with each passing day, we decided to adopt her," explains Angad. "What reasons my choice for adopting Sohnie, a stray dog, rather than buying a fancy dog, which belongs to a good breed, was the compassion that I felt for the homeless dogs. Sohnie was protected at the kennel and I didn't have the heart to leave her among other dogs, who can sometimes turn very hostile," he adds. It's been over two and a half years that Sohnie has been residing with the Anands. "Sohnie is very independent and disciplined. She goes for walks twice in a day. Mongrels are usually very comfortable with Indian weather, and are easy to maintain as they are naturally well trained. Also, they are very emotional," he says. Yours faithfully "Sohnie actually is very snooty and she does have a lot of tantrums, which she throws in abundance. Also, she does not quiet fancy other street dogs, who do try to woo her. In fact, she looks the other side and is capable of subjecting them to a royal ignore," he laughs. "Nevertheless, Sohnie is actually very nice with kids though she is a little fussy with food. She has the capacity to reject the best food, if she is not in the mood to eat. I really like irritating her sometimes, and sometimes when I go overboard, she does tend to get very agitated. I still remember when I troubled her way too much only to get back home and found most of my clothes torn to tatters. Well, we all know who did it," he laughs. Well, so much for those who believe that dogs are a man's most faithful friends! amarjot@tribunemail.com |

Stay relaxed, stay healthy
Renee Singh Whenever I watch any of my clients walk into my clinic in a huff, the first thing I tell them is — relax. When agitated, I know it is the most difficult word to listen to but then it helps. We must realise that learning how to relax will enhance the quality of our lives by beating the negative effects of stress. You can release the accumulated mental and physical tension in this way and thus restore depleted energy levels. This leaves you feeling refreshed, revitalised and better able to cope with the many pressures of modern living. Relaxation gives you a sense of complete well-being. Many medical experts have now started to acknowledge that body and mind are integral to each other. Stress lowers the resistance of the body's immune system whereas a relaxed mind helps strengthen the defense system against diseases. Similarly when you feel physically relaxed, you are also mentally more at peace. Mind body connect Relaxation is the key to unlock the physical tension in your body. This type of physical tension actually tends to root itself between different body parts creating tight bands of muscle that cause one area of the body to feel cut off from another. Deep breathing and relaxing chronically tense areas of your body will help you identify and release any underlying stress. Different parts of the body respond to different kinds of stress, so you can easily use your body as a gauge and it can also be used to chart your mental health. * Face muscles: These always tighten under stress to present the false picture. * Shoulders: They actually indicate your mental state. If there is pain and stiffness in your shoulders, you are definitely suffering from stress. * Back muscles: These are a protective shield against stress. Pain in your back symbolises severe tension. * Pelvic muscles: These are linked to feelings concerning survival. * Knees: Reflect your attitude towards control and weakness. * Legs: These relate to childhood emotions like rage, which we carry over the years. Getting rid of tension Bring your body at ease by doing some exercises to release any pent up emotions and muscular tightness. Lie down on your back on a firm, flat surface and focus on each part of your body individually, moving from your toes up towards your face. Release the tension from one area at a time by simply contracting the appropriate muscle and then let go. * Contract your muscle as you inhale. * Hold your breath as long as you can * Exhale and then relax * Make a sound as you exhale and relax the area you are working on * Become aware of the body and realise that you are relaxed. Tighten and release To finish your exercise properly, tighten and then release your entire body. Rest for ten minutes afterwards. Brisk activity Jogging or taking a brisk walk when you come from work will help, release any tension accumulated during the day. Know yourself Be aware of your body's reaction to stress, so you can quickly dispel tension. (Singh is a Chandigarh based psychotherapist) |

Deven gets candid
He played the memorable role of Gattu in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby and became a household name. Now Deven Bhojani is back on TV with yet another show called Bh.. se Bhade wherein. In the show, he is shown to be blessed with the power of touch which can help people deal with their problems.
Tell us about your new role. The character is Bhade who has the power of making people's problems go away. But only for a brief time. He can help with illness, ailments, bad character, lying, anger or ill luck. He is a simple person who wants to help others. But this creates a lot of issues in his house. It is fun and interesting and I don't think anyone has done such a role before. After Gattu in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, do you feel this role too might become that popular? I hope so. I think it will appeal to masses. My appearance is that of an elderly person so I play a grandfather which is fun and interesting. You played your age in your other show Mrs
Tendulkar. And rarely do you get to play your age. What do you have to say about this? Yes it is but I also want to play different roles. Playing older characters on TV doesn’t bother me much. How can I make the role and the show better is my goal. And I hope I will be able to do justice to my this role as well. You will reunite with Sucheta Trivedi and Sarita Joshi on
this show. How does it feel? Yes. We are working after Baa Bahoo and I am looking forward to it. Saritaji is playing my mother-in-law and Sucheta plays my wife on the show. You have a good rapport with producer J D Majethia too. Is it easier to work with him? Yes we have known each other for years now and understand each other. It gets easier to work with someone who understands you and is on the same wavelength.
