Guru Nanak Dev centre proposes encyclopaedia on Sikh music
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 13 In the meeting, various aspects of compilation of an encyclopaedia on Sikh music were discussed. It was decided that the proposed encyclopedia will include as many as 3,000 entries about
Gurmat Sangeet and Sikh tradition of ‘Dhadi and Kawishri’. The project is expected to be completed in 11 years. The encyclopedia will be published in five volumes. In the first year, suggestions will be solicited from the Sikh intellectuals and experts. In a time period of two years, the first volume of the selected entries will be published. Experts from other universities, including international universities, will also be roped in for the cause. The print edition of the encyclopaedia will be accompanied by audio-visuals for the entries as well, said the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia. The Academic Council and Syndicate of Sri

Management institute penalised
Chandigarh, October 13 The institute has been directed to refund fee of Rs 4.5 lakh along with Rs 1 lakh as compensation to each of the seven students who filed a complaint stating that the institute had falsely represented that the diploma was equivalent to Masters of Business Administration. The students led by Anamika Singh of Mohali, who had undergone a PG diploma in management
(agri business) during the 2010-12 session from the institute, had filed a complaint with the district forum against the institute. The students sought refund of fees and compensation for the loss of opportunity and time. Deepak
Aggarwal, counsel of the students, contended that they could not apply for the master's degree. The district forum, however, agreed with the contention of Pankaj
Chandgothia, counsel of the institute, that the diploma was recognised by the
AICTE, which was the only mandatory recognition required under law. Therefore, the diploma was valid but the additional benefit of MBA equivalence was not available. The district forum declined the prayer for refund but awarded Rs 1 lakh as compensation for the wrong claim of MBA equivalence. The students filed an appeal before the state commission, which modified the order of the district forum and directed the institute to refund the entire fees of Rs 4.5 lakh along with a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each of the students. |

Juvenile arrested for attempt to rape
The UT police arrested a 17-year-old boy on Sunday for trying to sodomise a six-year-old boy in a forest area near Burail village. The incident occurred when the accused took
the minor boy to the forest area on pretext of giving him toys and tried to sodomise him. The minor somehow managed to escape and reported the incident to his father who called the police. A case of unnatural sex under
Section 377 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. The accused was arrested and sent to a juvenile home.
Miscreants decamp with ornaments, cash
Some miscreants struck
at a house and a wine shop and decamped with cash and valuables in two separate incidents in Chandigarh on Sunday. In the first incident, Deepak Saini, a resident of Manimajra, reported that some miscreants broke into
his house and decamped with ornaments and cash worth Rs 6000. The complainant was not at home when the incident took place. On return, the victim found his house ransacked. The matter was then reported to the police. The police reached the spot with dog squad. In another incident, Santosh Kumar, a resident of Manimajra, accused a person, Ranjit along with other, of allegedly thrashing him and damaging his country wine shop at the old Ropar road, Manimajra. He also accused them of taking away Rs 15,000. A case of house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint (452), dacoity (395) and criminal intimidation (506) under the IPC has been registered at the Manimajra police station. Investigations were on in the cases.
Gold chain snatched
Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched a gold chain from a resident of Sector 34. The
victim has been identified as Vipandeep Kaur. The incident took place near the Verka booth in Sector 34 market. The
victim said she was attacked by the motorcycle-borne youths, who came from rear and snatched her gold chain.The victim, however, failed to note down the registration number of
the vehicle. The accused had worn their helmets due to which, the victim failed to even recognise them. A case has been registered under Sections 356 and 379 of the IPC. Investigations were on in

Gunshots fired in Sector 35
Chandigarh, October 13 The family members, however, alleged no shot was fired. On October 10, some miscreants had also stolen AC wires and other items worth Rs 5,000 from the second floor of Singh's house. A senior police official said Surinder Pal Singh opened the firing in self-defence and his weapon along with its license has been seized. A Daily Diary Report has been lodged in this regard and action will be taken after obtaining a legal opinion. |

2 of thieves’ gang held
Chandigarh, October 13 A team of the crime branch laid a trap near the Sectors 42/43/52/53 roundabout and apprehended accused, identified as Shiva and Rajni Kant. Both the accused are the residents of Nehru Colony, in
Chandigarh. The police said the accused used to steal household articles from various residential areas across the city. The police also recovered four LPG cylinders, a printer, a car stereo and a pen drive from their possession. The police said the accused took to crime to lead a lavish life. “They wanted to live a life full of luxuries, hence they decided to choose this shortcut,” said a police official. They have been sent to a 14-day judicial custody. Further investigations are on in the case, said a

Team Arjuna’s vehicle wins at ‘Efficyle-2013’
Chandigarh, October 13 The winning team comprises Luv Nagpal Team Captain, Lakshya Batra, Vijay Nayyar, Tejaswi Nagpal, Rahul Khetarpal, Aman Rastogi, Arun Mittal, Arun Kumar Choudhary, Nikhil Gangadharan and Parichay Saxena. Revealing the strengths of the vehicle that turned out to be the advantage for team Arjuna, Luv Nagpal said before designing the vehicle they did a complete market research and after gathering the inputs, the team decided that their design would be
very simple. “One thing we had in mind was that the vehicle should be simple and strong which lasts toughest situation”, said the team captain. While the vehicles designed by other teams participating in the event weighed over 120 kg, the winning team's vehicle weighed 83 kg due to its design that helped the team in driving the vehicle at the maximum speed. The team itself designed the reduction part used in the battery that helped the vehicle in performing better. Lakshya, another team member, divulging about the innovation behind the vehicle said the chain system of the vehicle was designed in a way that chain did not come-off the chain-wheel on the rough tracks. "All vehicles faced this problem, however, we survived it due to the chain system that had a spring which kept the chain tight and restricted it coming-off the chain-wheel," he added. The suspension of the vehicle, which helped in a comfortable, drive helped the driver, drive safely without vehicle getting topple. The main event had a treacherous endurance run on specially designed 1.7 km circuit, besides evaluation on several parameters of static and dynamic tests and cost and marketing presentations. Kings XI Punjab, private company to host T20 meet
Chandigarh, October 13 Prior to the tournament, trails will be held across a number of schools, colleges and universities. The section panel will shortlist 120 players and the selected players will be divided among eight teams. The teams will play 15 matches (12 league, two semifinal and 1 final) at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula. Registration for the Punjab region will commence on October 16 at SD College, Chandigarh, followed by another registration at the Rayat Bahra Group of Colleges on October 17 and SUSCET College, Tangori, on October 18. |
