Ensure smooth procurement of paddy, officials told
Ambala, October 6 He also asked the commission agents to ensure that the crop of the farmers is not unloaded on the roads so that it gets damaged and causes blockade in free movement of vehicles. DC asked the farmers to bring their paddy after cleaning and drying properly so that they do not have to wait for selling it in the market. He also asked them not to burn the residue of the paddy crop in the fields as it reduces the fertility of the land and emits poisonous gas which results in causing diseases like asthma and cancer. DC said this year paddy was sown in 80 thousand hectares of land as against a target of 77 thousand hectares while sugarcane has been sown in 12 thousand hectares and maize in 3 thousand hectares of land. He assured farmers that there will be no shortage of fertilizers for the ensuing crops as HAFED, IFFCO and private dealers had adequate quantity of the Urea, DAP and other fertilizers.

Over 400 examined at camp
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 6 A team of doctors led by Dr Rohit Gupta of PGI checked the eyes of patients, where as a team of specialists led by Dr Hatinder Suri of Rana Hospital, Sirhind, checked patients suffering from piles. More than 400 patients were checked up in these camps. The patients were given free medicines. Addressing the gathering, Dr Hukam Chand Bansal appreciated the efforts of the organisation. He said," service to mankind is service to God and we should serve the needy selflessly." On this occasion, prominent senior citizens and social workers Rana Kharati Lal, Dr Krishan and Mohan Lal Suri were honoured. |

Potholed roads pose threat to commuters
Dera Bassi, October 6 They said link roads that are lying in the poor condition include Dera Bassi to Samgouli, Dera Bassi to Fatehpur Behra, Dera Bassi to Amlala, Lalru to Aganpur Bhagwasi, Lalru to Jarout, Dappar to Toganpur and Aganpur, Dera Bassi to Mianpur. Along with these, link roads of Zirakpur have been lying in very poor condition. Link roads approaching to nearby villages and in city are in poor condition and causes problems for commuters. Residents said heavy rains have caused more damage to these roads that were not repaired since long time. Residents said people are dying due to accidents because of these link roads. Meanwhile, SDO mandi board Anil Kumar said nearly Rs 18 crore has been approved from the rural development fund of state government for the repairing of link roads of this area and he assured that work would start soon.

Airtel GM’s murder case
Mohali, October 6 The creator of the email ID had sent a threatening mail to Indonesia-based Hardeep Singh, whose mother had treatment at Fortis, the work place of Simrat in September 2009. In the mail (which was sent through the fake email ID of Simrat on February 18, 2010), the person had threatened Hardeep Singh to stay away from Simrat or be ready for consequences. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Simrat Vats said with the identification of creator of the email ID, the police might get a clue in the murder case. “Four years have passed since my husband was killed; the police is yet to reach any conclusion in the case. I am very disappointed,” said Simrat Vats. A senior official of the state cyber cell said the complaint of Simrat Vats was received. “We have started the investigation in the case,” said the official. Notably, Sameer was shot on March 12, 2009 in front of the Cosmo Hospital at Phase 8 and he died on March 19 at the Fortis Hospital. The police had already conducted a polygraph test on two persons, Sandeep Singh, brother of Simrat, and Achherpal Singh, IT head of the Fortis Hospital. The mail in question was reportedly generated from a computer server. The victim’s father, Col SK Vats (retd), has also filed a petition in this connection at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. |

Mohali, October 6 Inspector Dharam Pal, station house officer of the Phase I police station, said the ring ceremony function of Dr Indira Bhalla's son Mohit was in progress when two minor girls, who were present in the function posing as guests, took away the purse. The tower location of the mobile phone showed Phase VII, Industrial Area, as the location. "I sent a police team there but could not nab them," said the SHO adding that a case in this connection has been registered at the Phase I police station. |

Chandigarh, October 6 Junior World Cup player Akshdeep Nath along with Amitoze Singh scored 162 runs in partnership for the third wicket off 177 balls to help the Reliance side to register victory. Earlier, batting first, the PCC posted 247 runs before getting all out in 49.1 overs. Their innings was studded by Taruwar Kohli and Jeevanjot Singh. The duo stood for a 71-run partnership for the third wicket. Jeevanjot was trapped in front by Ketal Patel for 52 off 68 balls inclusive of 3 boundaries while Taruwar continued to bat well and added another fruitful partnership of 44 runs with Gurkirat Mann (28 runs). But later, Taruwar and Sharad Lumba helped the team achieve the total. The duo scored 94 runs for the fifth wicket to take the score to 228 in 45.1 overs before Taruwar was caught on 81 off 95 balls inclusive of 5 boundaries. GGDSD-32 girls emerge TT champs
Chandigarh, October 6 In the final match of the championship, GGDSD College, Sector 32, defeated GN Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, by 3-2. In the first game, Kalyani of GGDSD College, Sector 32, went down against Nirdosh of Khalsa College by 3-1 (9-11, 9-11, 11-3, 3-11) while in the second game, Naina of the local college defeated Nidhi by 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-1). Continuing the wining streak, in a closely contested game, Sakshi of SD College beat Bhumika at 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 3-11, 11-5, 11-4) but Naina lost to Nirdosh at 3-1 (7-11, 12-10, 6-11, 10-12). St Soldier clinch soccer cup
Chandigarh, October 6 With such a move, the top two teams of St Soldier International School, Sector 28, and Shishu Niketan, Sector 22, have confirmed their entry for the All-India CBSE Cluster Football Tournament to be held in Chennai in December, later this year. In the final match of the tournament, Shubkarman Singh posted the host’s victory. He scored the only goal of the match through a well-executed power pack long volley shot.
