Right perspective
Perspective allows one to look beyond the obvious and it is perhaps the only key that imagination equips one with to break free from the countless locks of the stereotypical. At the Punjab Kala Bhawan, where as many as eight artists from the region exhibited their works in the group exhibition titled, Summation of Perspectives, there was certain intensity in their expression that cajoled us to think.
As one soliloquized, "Is that not what our nation needs today, something that forces them to think?", one is acquainted with Tejinder Ladi's incredible artistic genius that seemed to translate a deep felt anguish in a rather subtle desire for change. "I am harrowed with the working of the urban society, which was made for the so-called educated! And what's even more devastating is the status of women in our society. So, my paintings lament the status of women, who is often just regarded as the object of sexual desire by the male dominated society," explains Tejinder, who is also an architect, an interior designer and a graphic designer based in Ludhiana. Painted in psychedelic colours, his paintings, Object of Nihilism, Enter at your own Risk and Concrete jungle, do seem to echo his thoughts. Meanwhile, Darshan Singh, who hails from Ludhiana and paints landscape using watercolours as a medium. He uses subtle colours, which highlight his depth to create whimsical entropy that resounds in his expression of realism. "I paint the regular landscapes of Punjab, for instance this one is a series on Sandgole, near Chandigarh, and is also called as Uccha Pind," Darshan says while pointing towards his paintings. As one progresses towards the works of Navneet Kaur, 22, who is currently perusing a master degree in Fine Arts from GCG, Ludhiana, attempts to explore the relationship of human, nature, and animal. Her paintings are titled, Freedom of Soul, Gossiping skills and Birth and death series. Vishakha, who did her bachelors in fine arts from MCMDAV, Chandigarh, exhibits her works, which are her take beauty, nature and peace. "I am really fond of textures and I have used acrylic on canvas and have done panel work for my paintings titled, Seasons and The Peacock," she says. While Rashim Gupta, an Amritsar-based artist, indulges in meditative art as she paints a series of paintings on music, nature and divinity. Kamal Nath takes to aesthetics in a rather radical manner. He uses acrylic on canvas on as many as sixteen paintings, while he paints a couple of others in oil on canvas. A refuge from the ordinary and a drift from the regular, Jasbinder Singh, a Mumbai-based artist, who also teaches film designing at Whistling Woods, engages in paining in water colours as he expresses his interest for the architecture and as you look at his paintings, which are intricate and detailed. Also, he uses a stitching machine to correlate man and machine in the paintings. Paintings by Ajit Kaaur, a Chandigarh-based artist too are a delight to look at. The paintings at the exhibition are priced between Rs 6,000 to Rs 65,000. On till October 7 amarjot@tribunemail.com

Art of architecture

This is the first-ever exhibition on the subject by the Swiss Embassy and to reason why it commenced in Chandigarh, Martin Strub, minister and deputy chief of mission, Swiss Embassy, said, "Just like Switzerland, this is a small and beautiful exhibition, and we have been eying Chandigarh for quite some time now. The exhibition details the framework of Swiss design and architecture, which has myriad proportions of aesthetics and creativity, depending upon local surroundings." The exhibition focuses on the rural, infrastructural, Alpine, urban and suburban architecture that dwells on functionality as well as aesthetics. Right in the act
His coy, yet strong onscreen persona makes every woman secretly pray for a man like him in their life. Actor Adhhvik Mahaj plays Soham Singh Mann in the Color's show Bani—Ishq Da Kalma and he is pretty much satisfied with what he is getting through it.
Surprisingly, Adhhvik made his debut with Ram Gopal Varma's film Contract, where he played the lead role. Thereafter, he got busy with his studies and then came along the TV serial. The intense-looking actor doesn't shy away from speaking his heart, in fact, in accepting reality! "I had to go through the standard struggle when I came to Mumbai, but within 4-5 months I got my first break with Contract. But immediately after, there was a recession and I also went back to pursuing my MBA," says the actor who also worked in the blockbuster Telugu movie Oosaravelli with Junior NTR and Tamannah. Adhhvik did a couple of projects Down South before he was approached for Bani on Colors. "I found the script engaging; besides it had a Punjabi background, so I went ahead with it." The trained theatre actor had no qualms in taking up a serial after doing an RGV film. "I don't have any hang-ups as long as I am getting a good role. The serial is getting a great response from the audience. In fact, it is now that I have started getting film offers once again," says Adhhvik. You just can't ignore TV anymore and this young actor seconds that. "The reach of television has increased with many film celebrities already working in this medium." Monotony, does the word scare him? "Not really, the kind of role I am playing has a lot of scope. In a woman-centric television industry, I have bagged a role like this. I am getting a lot of appreciation for this role," he adds. Adhhvik doesn't consider television a lesser medium, "TV has become completely entertaining. It offers a complete package." Once a Punjabi always a Punjabi; Adhhvik wants to work in a Punjabi film. "I am getting offers for it. Being a Punjabi, this is something I would love to do one day. I haven't thought about the kind of role, for sure it should be something wherein I can act," he says. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Purab has his hands full
Purab Kohli's memorable role in recent times has been Rock On!! He has been off the radar for a while but has been busy acting and directing short films. One of his films Jal will also be showcased in Korea at a film festival. He talks about acting and more.
Career graph Memories keep one going. My first experience as an actor was a campus-based television show Hip Hip Hurray. Later, I did several travel shows for a music channel. After 10 years of valuable experience, I finally decided to make a career out of acting. Earlier, I was just going with the flow with no fixed plan. No aviation It was every young boy's dream to become a pilot in the late 90s. I was no different. But I hadn't anticipated that it was a tough and expensive call. It was only after training and meeting other pilots that I realised that it was not my cup of tea. Also, it was disheartening when I was asked by co-pilots if I was the son of a pilot or a politician because only they could manage to reach till here. It was during my ground training exams that I realised that it was not my cup of tea. I felt guilty that my parents would be spending so much of money on my training and I wasn't even sure if I would be able to land a good job. But I don't regret this decision because if I hadn't given up flying, then I wouldn't have gone for an audition of Hip Hip Hurray and eventually reach here. Big break My Brother Nikhil was a prominent film of my career. When I saw the film, I realised that a film can make a difference to people's thinking. I hadn't dreamt of the massive response that came from the audience. Then of course, Rock On!! happened which gave me commercial success, people started saying, 'Hey, he can do comedy as well'. It also gave me the needed recognition as an actor. Different strokes As an actor, I want to surprise my fans every time. One gets stuck with an image in this industry but I want to do all kinds of roles. I started with acting on television, then turned a VJ and a travel host, and then stopped acting completely. And then, I did a negative role in Awaarapan and a homosexual in My Brother Nikhil. What I really need is a director to instigate the actor with different shades in me. Nature lover I am sensitive towards the environment. I love outdoors and being with nature, exploring the forests and taking off on treks. If you give me an option of watching non-stop television or going out for drinks and dinner as opposed to trekking, I will choose the latter. I am a person made up by my experiences.

Prabhudheva is masala king: Shahid
Actor Shahid Kapoor, who has worked under the direction of Prabhudheva for the first time in R...Rajkumar, says the actor-director is the "masala king" of movies.
"I hope I have been able to fulfil what Prabhu (Prabhudheva) has expected from me. It was an honour to work with him. He is the mawali (rowdy) and the masala king," Shahid told reporters at the trailer launch of R...Rajkumar. Shahid says he simply followed Prabhudheva's instructions. "I have copied what Prabhu was doing and I have only followed him throughout the film. There was too much of action, so it was tiring. But I had a great time shooting," said Shahid, who found it challenging to match steps with Prabhudheva as far as dancing was concerned. "I used to think I am a great dancer, but when I danced with him I realised I am still a struggler," said Shahid. R...Rajkumar features Sonakshi Sinha as the female lead. The film releases Dec 6.

Fingers crossed
The promos of both Bullet Raja and R...Rajkumar are out. In our opinion, Bullet Raja is very promising with a powerful and good-looking cast while R...Rajkumar seems to offer nothing new and it is simply Shahid Kapoor doing what his seniors have done. Both movies star Sonakshi Sinha in different avatars. We hope R...Rajkumar is a hit for Shahid's sake.

All about looks
From being the simple, girl-next-door to now being a daring, girl-on-the-ramp, Mahima Makwana's character Rachna in Zee TV's Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, has witnessed a sea-change. In the current track, she enrolled as a designer in a
fashion designing competition but when the model who was supposed to showcase her designs ditched her at the last minute, Rachna decided to quit the competition. However, her father Dayal (Shakti Singh) encouraged her to walk the ramp wearing clothes that she designed herself.
Designing Rachna's Awadhi-Indian look, Niharika Bajpai, the stylist, said, "She is a simple girl who belongs to the city of Benaras and is known to be a behenji. It was tough to make this behenji character come out as an elegant girl on the ramp and get her fans to love her as much as they do. Hence we gave her this very Indian look with open hair, bindi and a nath (nose ring). The look just added to her personality and went perfectly well with her character, making her look very Indian." Talking about her look, Mahima said, "I was over the moon to finally get a chance to glam up on the show. My character does not let me experiment much with my look, but this was an opportunity to look different and wear an ethnic yet modern look."
Big B’s appeal
It was an emotional moment on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati as Amitabh Bachchan made an earnest appeal for a very special hot seat contestant. The extraordinary story of Johnson Philem was so moving that it made even Big B have a lump in his throat.
The upcoming Doosra mauka episode will witness 30-year old contestant from Manipur Johnson Philem make his way to the hot seat. Accompanying him will be the deputy editor of Aaj Tak Sumit Awasthi. Johnson revealed to AB that he was 18 years when he was caught in cross-firing in Manipur. The incident took place on September 20, 1999. He had planned to go out with his friends to celebrate when suddenly a cross firing took place. Johnson tried to escape from the back gate of the restaurant when suddenly someone fired on him from behind and the bullet went into his back. Due to delay in his operation, the lower part of the body got totally paralysed. He added that he was in pain since 13-14 years and is now living on pain-killers due to which there were serious side-effects such as memory loss, hair fall and sleepless nights. After hearing his story, AB appealed to all the doctors to come forward and help him. He also promised to personally inquire and ask doctors about Johnson Philem's treatment. Later AB asked Johnson about his favourite actress and he replied - Anushka Sharma. He quickly connected a call to Anushka and Johnson asked her if she would like to go out for a coffee with him? Anuskha was quick to say yes. Johnson also gifted AB a white muffler signifying the symbolic coming together in a bond of friendship. Watch the inspiring story of Johnson Philem this Sunday, October 6, 8:30 pm, only on Sony Entertainment Television.
