Great mind at work
Film-maker Anil Sharma's upcoming movie is soon going to hit the big screen with Sunny Deol playing 'Singh' in this one! Their earlier outing together, Gadar, was a mega success. So is he hoping to repeat the feat all over again? We check out.
Surprisingly, on Thursday in Chandigarh, Singh Saab The Great cast shows up in time and is more than willing to share excerpts from their journey. No words minced, no negative vibes or jibes but a straightforward director manning the show, who is only too happy to bring his film for you. The story After Veer, I was mulling over the idea for the next project. I read papers that were full of social issues; corruption has us all down. I wondered that the collector being the official head of a city should set the system right, so why was he not doing it? So was born the hero of the movie who is out to change the system. Badlav not badla is what he stands for. Money wise It's not a very big budget film; just about Rs 35 crore. It has been shot in a village, required no trips to New York or London or big sets. Item number
Yes, there is one. They have always been cinema staples from the beginning. In Helen's time, we called them cabarets; now item number. There is a new girl Simran Khan for Singh Saab The Great. Unique code The USP of this film is its emotional moments. It is a love story. Just as you could feel the love in Gadar or Hero, so will you here. It celebrates the bonds — husband-wife, brother-sister and also between collector-media. The dialogues are the movie's strength. Message time I am cinema person and through this I express myself. Corruption is killing or country, we believe and so does the movie — that if system and the media get together, we can bring in positive change. Success meter One can only give one's best try. I made the film for I have faith in this. Before Gadar, I had told that it's going to be India's Titanic. It was a hit. I believed in Veer too, but it couldn't do that well. I have my idea and hardwork in hand; success or no success is Almighty's call. My genre I make commercial, entertaining films. Realistic is not my genre. Yes, there is lots of drama in my movies because I want to reach out to as many as possible. If you want the attention of the audiences, you have to present in an interesting manner. My drama looks real. Deol association Film-making is quite like fine-tuning. I gel well with the Deols; have given hits with Dharmendra Ji and Sunny. We understand each other without talking, so works very well with us. Punjab connect I love coming to Punjab; my earlier films have been extensively shot here. I am glad Punjabi cinema is rocking the world; if the opportunity comes I will also make a Punjabi movie. Amrita Rao has established herself as an actress of varied hues. From full-on commercial like Main Hoon Na to rather offbeat Welcome to Sajjanpur; she has tried different films. Is it a conscious choice? "Not really. I have been lucky that directors could see me in different roles." Amrita believes in giving her best shot to work at hand rather than to planning. "I never planned to do a film a year; some films I had signed didn't take-off only. I didn't expect three of my films to release this year either. That's life; there is always an element of surprise that I enjoy." Considering it to be a great time for actors when the line between commercial and art cinema is fast blurring, Amrita says her dream role would be to play a 50's Madhu Bala opposite Ranbir Kapoor. For Singh Saab The Great, she attended workshops to get the Eastern UP dialect right and watched lots of regional news channels to fit in TV reporter's part. "I would consider myself a success if television journalists can see a bit of them in my act." The pretty Anjali Abrol plays hero's sister in the film. "It's a strong brother-sister bond that's been shown. How my brother saves me and how I support him, the film has huge emotional connect," says Anjali. It's her director Anil Sharma who puts in the final words, "Brother-sister bond is the first man-woman bond and remains special through life. We are four brothers and one sister. My sister stays in Delhi and if there is as much as just some vague mention by her, I drop everything in Mumbai to be at her side. You will see that connect in our film," says Anil.

Bright & beautiful
If you aren't one of the crème de la crème, it can be at times intimidating to enter a designer store. And even if the 'mustered up' courage helps one do so once in a while, unwelcoming attitude of sales boys and girls puts a full stop to the journey into the luxury world as soon as it begins. The scene, however, changes at an exhibition where one visits a designer stall as part of the crowd and is not identified as a mere window-shopper! "It automatically lends confidence to people to shop," says Divya Gurwara, CEO, Bridal Asia. It's with this logic that she started the exhibition Bridal Asia fifteen years back, which has now become a success model for several others.
Once the idea was conceived, putting it into practice was the real challenge. "When I started, people felt safe dealing with family jewellers and cloth merchants. They had inhibitions buying stuff from make-shift markets that exhibitions are." To counter the same, Divya picked brands that promised value to customers, which were the best in the market and helped develop faith in customers. Being an annual affair that stays on just for three days, Divya shares that she is often flooded with demands of increase in frequency. "I am often told that I should at least hold one in Mumbai and Bengaluru, but I am happy the way it is — once a year in Delhi." The exhibition enjoys a heavy footfall from cities of Punjab as well, which gels perfectly with the concept of the big fat Punjabi weddings. It boasts of designers like Sabyasachi, Manish Arora, Vikram Phadnis, Gaurav Gupta, who year after year reserve a stall for their labels at the exhibition. "Labels and brands that have invested in us know the value of the Bridal Asia." On board are also crockery, jewellery, luggage, hotel brands et al. Even Pakistani designers enroll themselves for the exhibition. With so much under one roof, Divya says there is something for everyone. "I know customers who board a flight from different cities of India to mark their presence at the exhibition. "But that does not make Divya change her decision of increasing the number of stalls from forty-five; that's how it has been since inception. "I will not do anything that dilutes the brand of Bridal Asia." The exhibition begins in Delhi on October 7. ashima@tribunemail.com

TRENDSETTER Trends, when followed blindly, leads to fashion faux pas. It is adapting the latest trend that suits your persona, which does the trick. It holds true for both formal and informal dressing. The knack of understanding the word 'suitability' is the precursor of a good fashion sense. Priyanka Arora, a student of fashion designing at SIFT, interacts as the trendsetter of the day. Sense of style It is the perception of fashion which decides the style quotient of anybody. The sum total should be a graceful look for being truly stylish. The latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories? A pant in red colour and a white shirt from Only Brands. Brand crazy or street pick-up? Both are welcome. The idea is to look good. Who would be your style icon? Chitragandha Singh and Kareena Kapoor Khan are just 'wow'! Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity? Has to be Rakhi Sawant! Which look would your prefer-sporty, chic or glamorous? Glamorous for me! One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension? All trends are do-able if you keep the suitability factor in mind. Your take on accessories? I like to accessorise simply and especially go in for big pendants with chains as is the fashion theses days. What gives you a high on the confidence level? Dressing well always gives a high but being able to respond and reply aptly makes me feel even more confident. Given a choice which designer would you like to design for you? Tarun Tahilani is my dream designer. — As told to Poonam Bindra |

Royal treat Reaching out to our rich traditional cuisine while adapting it to the modern palate seems to be the endeavour when 'Royal buffet on a plate' was launched by Radisson Blu in their restaurant Made in India. "Whatever cuisine we might relish and enjoy the craving for our typical Indian fare remains and that's why we thought of treating our customers to a Royal treat," informs the F& B manager Anupam Tewari. Starting with melting-in-the-mouth murg malai tikka and shammi kebabs with butter milk as the drink before the main course, it becomes a grand journey for a foodie right from the start. With unlimited kebabs (veg and non-veg) it becomes the answer to the Kebab Factory. "It is the heavenly whiff of spices which becomes the real appetizer," quips Ritu and Dr Chadha as they dig into the Royal buffet which is served in the customised silver coated engraved thali with specially designed small bowls. Making their guests feel royal the thali has the usual spiced up dal, mixed veg, mutton curry, a sumptuous raita, biryani and two other typical dishes cooked the traditional way. The menu for the veg and non-veg offerings changes every day. Executive chef Dinesh Rawat has used spices like rosemary and thyme too. "Recently when I visited my native Gadhwal region, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that what all we thought were English spices originated from there," says Rawat. He asserts that spices have no regional boundaries and one experiment with these in our cuisine too. Offering long forgotten recipes relished by the royalty, the thali also offers unlimited fillings and that sure is good news for the gourmand as he helps himself to the royal buffet on a plate. The sweet offerings of a gulab jamun and phirni form the typical ending to a hearty Indian meal. Price:
Rs 1,099 plus taxes per person. |

star track Actor Shahid Kapoor takes home cooked food on sets and makes sure that the whole team eats healthy and on time Shahid Kapoor has always been cautious of his eating habits, fitness and health. Eating right and eating on time is his mantra to good health. He is known for his fitness levels, energy, and dance prowess. The young actor prefers to eat home cooked food and also carries the same for himself and his team on set. In fact Shahid often avoids eating outside food and grabs a bite at home before going for social gatherings. Not just that, the actor also makes sure his staff is eating healthy and avoiding junk food. He carries lunch for his entire team on sets and ensures they are eating right and on time. The spokesperson of the actor says, "Shahid carries a lot of food from home. He likes to eat healthy and has a lot of variety in his dabba. He likes to sit down and eat with his team. Priyanka, Ranveer to play siblings?
Contrary to reports, it is Priyanka Chopra who has been roped in to play a pivotal role in Zoya Akhtar's next directorial venture and not Anushka Sharma.
The film is a story of a strong bonding between a brother and a sister. Actor Ranveer Singh will play Priyanka's brother in the film. It's a bit of an odd casting calculation considering the two play paramours in Yashraj Film's Gunday. A source close to Ranveer says, "They are both very accomplished young talents. They will look as convincing as siblings and lovers." To rewind a bit Zoya wanted to cast real-life cousins Ranbir and Kareena Kapoor as siblings in her film. The two rejected the offer for being too gimmicky.
Of cost cutting & self-help
Kangna Ranaut had to do everything herself on the sets of Krrish 3 and could not take the help of her stylist. Rakesh Roshan is very particular about curtailing expenses on the sets of his films.
She’s the woman
Following the success of Raanjhanna and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, fashionista Sonam Kapoor was given the Woman of the Year award at the GQ Awards and she dazzled in a fabulous Jean Paul Gaultier creation.
Race ahead: Sonam Kapoor

The Boss speaks
Akshay Kumar worked with Anthony D'souza on Blue and the movie tanked and how! He talks about working with him again and why he believes in Boss and more.
Nitara's first birthday It was an intimate private affair with all of our family members getting together. I always wanted a healthy child and it was a good evening with my loved ones. Reuniting with Anthony D'souza Everyone deserves a second chance. Even Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed very cheaply in his first innings and if his captain then had decided to drop him, he would not have become the Tendulkar he is now. Similarly every director will not have a hit in his first film and everyone takes his or her own time. Work schedule It is a wrong notion that I work too much. I have too many dos and don'ts in my life. I don't shoot on Sundays. I work only from 7 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. I take a week off after every film and I take a month-long vacation with my family every year. This year I had two releases -- Special Chabbis and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara and will have Boss releasing this month. That's it. Reason to do Boss I had seen the film Pokiri Raza (in Malayalam) and it seemed like a complete film in spite of the fact that it did not have a leading lady opposite me. There are enough twists and turns in the film with the story revolving around a father and his son and two brothers. Most importantly, I loved the title Boss. Playing a Haryanvi Usually we have seen all kinds of lead characters in films—the NRI, the Delhi-based hero, a Gujarati, a Punjabi but never a Haryanvi. Yes, I learnt the language. My character is fun and I am sure everyone will love it.
Pain in the back!
Deepika Padukone had to wear a shoulder and back brace before shooting for the garba song in Raam Leela as she was in immense pain. She did not want to reschedule and carried on with the brace which was camouflaged under her costume.
Italy bound
Naseeruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda-starrer The Coffin Maker is all set to make its Italian premiere at the 13th River to River Florence Indian Film Festival. The film will be screened first at the fest that takes off on November 22, and in a new highlight will also visit Rome on November 29. Directed by Veena Bakshi, it will be competing in the feature film section for the River to River Bitebay Audience Award.
Date issue
Kareena Kapoor Khan has given her dates to Shuddhi, starring Hrithik Roshan and directed by Siddharth Malhotra. This has jeopardised the fate of her movie with Emraan Hashmi which was co-produced by Ekta Kapoor and Karan
Johar.
Get well soon
There has been no improvement in Ranveer Singh's condition since he was admitted in the hospital due to dengue on September 28. His mother has been there like a rock by his side. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Blood relation

We are happy that she practices what she preaches.

A break much deserved
Anas Rashid has been working hard on his show Diya Aur Baati Hum so when he wanted to take a break, his producers had no issues with that. He went on a five-day holiday to Bali with his friends.
