BBSEB engineering college wins laurels
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 3 The fest provided a wide variety of attractions for the automobile enthusiasts and continued for a week. The aim of the event was to design and build a new low-budget go-kart that would be further competing at national level on the basis of design, acceleration performance, safety, economy and innovation. Dr Lakhwinder Singh, principal, said the college has provided to the students with the best infrastructure and lab facilities to carry out innovative and research-oriented projects. He said the engine capacity and power were limited to 110cc and 8.2 BHP, respectively, followed by safety issues and ground clearance. Now the winning team is preparing for the final endurance event, which is going to be held in next couple of weeks. The team has already started working on the installation of solar panels on the kart to make it more eco friendly. Avtar Singh Sampla, secretary of the trust, congratulated the winning team for brining laurels to the college. |

Adopt inclusive model of development, says Punjabi University VC
Patiala, October 3 While presiding over the seminar, the VC stressed upon adopting the inclusive growth and development model for making the fruits reach the marginalised and the needy sections of the society. He lamented that women, poor and educationally backward people of India were subject to discrimination and exploitation. He hoped that by adopting scientific approach, we can build a better society. Dr BK Kuthiala, Vice-Chancellor of Makhan Lal Chaturvedi University, Bhopal, while delivering his keynote address, elaborated on the use of media in creating logical and political thinking among Indians. Prof Kuthiala stressed on the use of media to make rural masses information rich. Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Guru Granth Sahib University, Fatehgarh Sahib, said the media can play effective role in the development of society. Dr KK Katoch, Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, spoke about the methods to improve the communication system. He further said various universities of India were imparting scientific training to its farmers. Dr Manoj Kumar Patariya, Director Scientific, NCSTC, New Delhi, talked about the importance of creating scientific temper among the rural societies of India. Earlier, while welcoming the guests and delegates Dr Harjinder Singh Walia, head of department, said in this era of globalisation and liberalisation the role of science communication has become very important. Vice-Chancellor honoured Dr RS Khandpur from Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala and Dr Gauri Datt Sharma, Deputy Director General, Doordarshan, Jalandhar, on the occasion. Atta-Dal Scheme to cover 30 lakh people, says minister
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 3 The recently highly-publicised Food Security Bill has been passed just to get political mileage and it will not benefit any needy, where as the ongoing Atta Dal Scheme of State Government is thousand times better than the bill that's why there is no impact of this bill in state, said Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, Minister for Food & Civil Supply, while talking to the mediapersons at Hansali Dera of Saint Baba Ajit Singh. Son-in-law of the Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, along with his family members had come to pay his obeisance at Dera of Sant Baba Ajit Singh Ji Hansali Wale. He said that under the Atta Dal scheme of the state government 15 lakh beneficiaries are being benefitted and the Chief Minister has directed to cover at least 30 lakh people under the scheme, so that no one should remain without food. He said that from the Union Government Food Security Bill only 7 per cent people in the state would be benefitted. He said as the paddy has started arriving in mandis the government has set up 1,789 procurement centres in the state. He appealed to the farmers to bring dry paddy in mandis, so that they may not have to face any difficulty in procurement. |

Court rejects accused’s plea
Mohali, October 3 The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed their plea of moving the case from the Mohali District Courts to another state. The accused had contended that no advocate was ready to represent them as the victim had been practicing in that court. The counsels of the victim’s family, however, said some of the accused had political connections and wanted to shift the case to a particular court in Haryana. “In fact, the court of Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge Manjot Kaur had offered to provide a government counsel free of cost to the accused, but they did not accept the offer,” said one of the counsels, Kanwaljit Singh. He said one of the accused, Sunbir Singh, had also moved an application in the High Court for getting a regular bail, on the pretext of getting married, on September 13. “It was later revealed that the accused was trying to mislead the court, following which the application was rejected,” he said. The next hearing will take place on October 16.

42-year-old woman killed in accident
Chandigarh, October 3 The woman was rushed to the PGI where she succumbed to her injuries. The truck belongs to Verka and its driver fled after the incident. The driver has been identified as Daljeet Singh of Nurpur Bedi in Punjab. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy. She is survived by her husband and three children. The police has registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving against the driver. Hearing adjourned to October 15
Hearing in the case involving Punjab DSP Raka Gira as an accused under the Excise Act was adjourned to October 15 today. The accused told the court that she would be challenging the dismissal of the application seeking dropping of the charges against her. In the last hearing on September 25, Judicial Magistrate Anil Kaushik had dismissed the application seeking dropping of the charges against her under the Excise Act. The police had booked Ghira under the Excise Act in July 2011 when 51 bottles of English wine were recovered from her house during a CBI raid. The CBI had caught Ghira taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. Ghira had appealed to the court to drop the charges against her on the ground that she had a permit to keep the wine bottles.
Another accused arrested
More than eight months after a three-year-old girl was kidnapped from a Hotel in Sector 22, the UT police today made the second arrest in the case. It arrested Raj Kumar alias Raju and brought him to the city on production warrants from Hisar. The accused has been sent to a four-day police custody. The prime accused in the case, Jagpal Beniwal, is still at large. Three-and-a-half-year-old Harmini, daughter of a Delhi-based stock broker, was kidnapped from Sector 22 in January this year. Co-accused Raj Kumar, alias Raju, is the brother-in-law of the main accused. The first arrest in the case was made on January 21 when the police had arrested Chinar Dutt, a resident of
Rohini, New Delhi. The police filed a chargesheet against her in April. Harmini's mother Priya Arora had received a ransom call from Jagpal, demanding an amount of Rs 60 lakh. The police said Hairsh Arora and Priya Arora owed an amount of Rs 60 lakh to the accused. The couple had given Jagpal some cheques, which were dishonoured. Priya Arora, along with her husband Harish Arora, son Hridev and daughter Harmaini, had come to the city from Delhi on January 12. Jagpal Beniwal, who was Harish’s business partner, joined them on January 15 and kidnapped their daughter. The police had recovered
the three-year-old girl on January 21 from Raipura near Jind.

RCF, Punjab Police in final
Mohali, October 3 In the semi-finals played today, the RCF Kapurthala got better of ITBP Jalandhar by 14-9 while in a closely contested shorter format of game Punjab Police drubbed Chandigarh XI by 14-10. In the first match, Punjab Police and Chandigarh XI played equally good and ended their first 15 minutes on a score of 7-7. But later, in the second half, the Punjab Police forwards with using all experience dominated the proceeding and named the match by 14-10. For police side, former international skipper Rajpal Singh netted six goals in 10th, 14th, 18th, 19th, 25th and 27th minute of the game. Ajay Kumar followed him with contributing four goals in the 6th, 12th, 17th and 19th minute while Jasbir Singh scored two goals in the 4th and 7th minute. Simranjit and Jagmeet strike the wooden plank once each in 28th and 29th minute respectively. For Chandigarh XI, Gaurav Tokhi scored 5 goals in 5th, 7th, 9th, 18th and 20th minute while Amrit pal netted two goals including one in the 4th minute followed by another in the 15th minute. Mukal (11th minute),Dhiman (16th minute) and Manmeet Singh (24th minute) scored a goal each to reduce the margin. In the second semi-final, the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) team trounced ITBP side by 14-9. Karanpal Singh (9th, 12th, 24th and 29th minute) and Sandeep Singh (11th, 13th, 17th and 30th minute) scored four goals each while Gurpreet Singh (2nd, 14th and 15th minute) and Gagandeep Singh in (10th, 11th and 14th minute) contributed three goals each. Chandigarh, October 3 The interested participants can enroll themselves with Parmod Kumar Singla, honorary secretary, Chandigarh Rowing Association or Arvind Sehgal, rowing coach by October 16. The Oar’s boys and Oar’s girls born on or after January 1, 1995 are eligible to participate in this championship. The association would shortlist the team to participate in the forthcoming 34th Junior National Rowing Championships to be held at Sonali Park, Upper Ganga Canal, Roorkee (Uttrakhand) from November 18 to 25. The players will be selected on the basis of their performance in the Chandigarh State Junior Rowing Championship. |

Chandigarh, October 3 Shahjahan Ali put the team ahead, with edge pasting the defenders and netting the ball marking toe-chip, in the 10th minute. The lead was soon doubled by Alaraf Azad, who collected a pass from the right-flank before posting it into nets, in the 12th minute. Before the end of the first half, Ali once again penetrated the rival’s defense and successfully posted his second goal in the 26th minute.
