37 school buildings unsafe in district says DC

Fatehgarh Sahib, Sept 27
There are 37 unsafe school buildings in district and keeping in view the safety of the students, they will be shifted to nearby schools, with the consent of village panchayats, said Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner during the District Vigilance Monitoring Committee meeting presided over by MP Sukhdev Singh Libra.

The meeting was called to review the progress of various central sponsored schemes initiated in the district. MP Sukhdev Singh Libra expressed concern over the state of affairs in the govt. offices, alleging that whenever he had visited any office to redress the grievances of people officers were found absent and grievances could not be resolved. He called upon the officials to ensure that all the Central Govt. sponsored schemes meant to raise the living standard of SC, BC people living below poverty line are implemented at grass-root level.

In the meeting, Congress MLAs Kuljit Singh Nagra from Fatehgarh Sahib and Kaka Randip from Amloh lodged protest with DC that whenever any function is organised to lay the foundation stone or on the inauguration of completed work, they are not invited to functions rather the names of defeated persons are scribed on foundation stones.

It is unconstitutional and they will raise the issue in assembly and approach the High Court to take legal action against the officers concerned. They said it is not appropriate to disrespect the elected representatives. DC assured that in future he will take care that elected representatives get due respect.

UK varsity holds workshop

Fatehgarh Sahib, Sept 27
University of Surrey (UK) and Cultural Resource Conservation Initiative (CRCI) jointly organised a workshop on “Cultural Memories and Amnesia” at Aam Khas Bagh, Sirhind. This workshop is coordinated by Dr Churnjeet Mahn, director of postgraduate research, University of Surrey (UK) and funded by AHRC, the UK’s largest funding body for Humanities. The final event will be organized at Aam Khas Bagh on 29th Sept.

While addressing the media persons, Dr Churnjeet Mahn said the aim of conducting this workshop is to sensitise the younger generation towards our rich heritage, culture and history. He said students from Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University and Mata Gujri College are participating in the event. The workshop was divided into three sub-parts: oral history, designing under the supervision of Ms. Simran and film making under the guidance of Ms. Ionnah. — OC

Court awards Rs 50.5 lakh compensation

Ambala, September 27
District and Sessions Judge Ambala and Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) Harnam Singh Thakur has awarded a compensation of Rs 50.5 lakh to dependents of a professor of MM University, Mullana.

AK Singh died on Ambala-Jagadhri road on March 6, 2008, when his car rammed into a truck near Mankamanki village. Later he succumbed to his injuries at the PGI, Chandigarh, on March 16. The court has ordered the insurance company concerned to pay Rs 35 lakh to his son Arun Kumar, Rs 10.5 lakh to his wife Versha and Rs 5 lakhs to his mother with 7.5 percent interest as compensation from the date of filing of the claim. — OC

Federation lauds SC verdict

General Category Welfare Federation, Punjab, has welcomed the judgment of 'right to reject' delivered by Supreme Court of India, today.

In a joint press statement, federation officials Sham Lal Sharma, Mukesh Puri, and Sohan Lal Chandla, president, Ropar Thermal Unit, said our federation was demanding the 'right to reject' for the last 10 years and we have submitted the memorandum's regarding this from time to time to the election commissioners of India. Now with this judgment of Supreme Court, our demand has been fulfilled, they said. He said this judgment will be a milestone in election reforms and now the voters will get a chance to show their resentment towards system.

Dental check-up camp held

Fatehgarh Sahib, Sept 27
TheRotary Club, Sirhind, organised a dental check-up camp and donated toothbrushes, toothpastes and listerine bottles to dental clinic, Hansali.

Club president Ashok Bansal said the clinic at Hansali is a charitable clinic being jointly run by Rotary Club, Millhill, UK and Rotary Club, Sirhind, under the patronage of Babaji Hansaliwale. Thousands of poor patients are given free treatment annually by a team of qualified doctors under the leadership of Dr Jaspreet Kaur and fully equipped. The credit goes to Dera Hansali Sahib and Dr HS Coonar, an eminent dentist and member RC Millhill. Volunteer doctors from all over the world keep visiting the clinic and they regard it as the best clinic under the aegis of Rotary International. — OC

2 quintals of poppy seized

The police has seized 2 quintal poppy husk at a police naka near Changera village yesterday. A truck was stopped for search on Banur-Ambala road, which was going from Rajasthan to Una.

During search around 2 quintal poppy husk was seized from the truck. Accused Naseer Ahmed, a resident of Bullewal, district Una in Himachal pardesh was arrested on the spot. He was booked under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS act.

Acquitted of murder charge

The Court of additional District and Sessions Judge SS Sahni today acquitted a woman and her male accomplice of the murder of the woman’s husband.

The court acquitted Naresh and Sunita of the murder of Pati Ram after the prosecution failed to prove the charges.

The murder occurred on September 8, 2011, when rehri vendor Pati Ram was strangulated with a pillow.

Pati Ram was murdered on the doorstep of his house in Mani Majra. Pati Ram had come to know about the illicit relations between his wife and Naresh.

Man alleges theft of Rs 2.5 lakh

A resident of Kharar created high drama in Sector 8 market, he called police and alleged that Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen from his car. The police has lodged a daily diary report in the matter and investigations are on to verify the claims.

He claimed that he had gone to a bank and left cash in his car. He said his friend and driver were sitting in his Innova car when he left for the bank. When Jagdish returned after a while he found his friend and driver playing cards in the parking and the vehicle was locked.

As he got into the vehicle, he claimed that Rs 2.5 lakh was stolen from his car. The police countered his claim saying that no windowpane was broken and the car was locked then how did the amount disappear. The police said they were investigating the claims.

Fraud case
Directors of pvt firm booked, one held

The UT police has registered a case of cheating, criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust against directors of an IT Park-based software company, Mobera Systems Private Limited. It has booked its directors, including Puneet Vatsayan and others, for a fraud of Rs 5 crore.

The complainant, Anuj Aggarwal, director, Altruist Technologies Private Limited, Cooperative Office, Tower-C, Second Floor, DLF Building, IT Park, Mani Majra, had reported to the police that Puneet Vatsayan, director of Mobera System Private Limited, Plot No. 18, IT Park, Chandigarh, cheated him of Rs 5 crore in an agreement to lease for two floors of the proposed building.

As per the case, the accused had approached Anuj Aggarwal with an offer that they would provide him two floors of the eight-storey building to be constructed on the said plot.

The accused assured that they would give the floors to Altruist Technologies on rent once the building was completed and took the amount as refundable security. However, neither the construction was started nor the accused returned the money of Rs 5 crore to Anuj Aggarwal, following which he complained to the police and the case was registered after a legal opinion.

A case under Sections 406, 420, 120-B of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

The accused, Puneet, has been arrested and remanded to one-day police custody.

15 phones recovered

Fifteen mobile phones alleged to have been stolen were recovered by the police from a Matour resident, who was arrested yesterday.

The police said Arvinder Singh of Mansa, who was a student and stayed in a rented accommodation at Phase VII here, had complained that his mobile phone was allegedly stolen from his room.

A case under Sections 454 and 380 of the IPC was registered in this regard.

Later, the police arrested Rajat, a resident of Kaithal, and allegedly recovered 15 mobile phones, eight SIM cards and one pen drive from him.

Punjab Hockey League on cards
Plan to create six hockey teams from the state, says Sukhbir Badal

In a bid to promote the national game in a better way, the Punjab government is all set to begin Punjab Hockey League on the pattern of cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

This was announced by the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal, while talking on the sidelines of inauguration of world-class hockey stadium at Phase IX by his father and the Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, this evening.

Sukhbir said they have planned to create at least six hockey teams from the state and make them compete in the league.

“This would serve double purpose. Apart from promoting the game, which is being dominated by Punjabis, in the state, we would also produce top players in a good number,” said Badal adding that having more than six top hockey stadiums in the big towns, including Jalandhar, Faridkot, Bathinda, Muktsar, Ludhiana and Mohali, would help in holding matches across the state.

Badal, who also announced to hold a six-nation tournament in the state soon, said the government would also hire top sports coaches to develop spots scenario.

“We would pick the talent at very young age and hone them to prepare them international players,” said Badal, who also inaugurated two Multi-Sports Complex at Sector 63 and Sector 68, here today.

Meanwhile, an exhibition hockey match between Rest of India and Punjab XI was also held at the newly-built flood-lit stadium. The match, which was being witnessed by around 8,000 spectators, was won by Punjab team by 3-2.

Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, gave Rs 5 lakh each to both the teams.

Mohun Bagan, Kolkata, reached the semifinals of 11th Administrator’s Challenge Cup of the All India Football Tournament, played here today at the Football Stadium. After defeating Army Boys, Patna, Mohun Bagan now will lock horns with the AIFF Regional Academy, Navi Mumbai, in the first semifinal to be played at Sector 17 tomorrow. In today’s match, Manik haldar and T Benard Singh of Mohun Bagan and Shard Pradhan of were cautioned by the referee during the game.

Earlier, in the first match of the day played at Sector 42, Dalbir Academy, Patiala, roughed DAV School, Chandigarh, by the score of 5-2. In other match of the day, played at Sports Complex, Sector 42, Sahayatri Football Academy, Howrah, defeated Gorkha Training Centre, Shillong, by a huge margin of 5-0. Bishal Santra and Chandan Shaw scored two goals each while SK Suraj Ali scored the fifth goal in the 45th minute of the play.

In the last match of the day played at Sector 17, Thou Football Academy, Manipur, edged out the Chandigarh Football Association by 3-1. Jiten, Vicky and Oken Singh scored one goal each for Manipur where as the lone goal of Chandigarh was scored by Sumit.

Badminton trials to select city Civil Services team on October 12

The Sports Department, Chandigarh, will conduct trials to select the Chandigarh Civil Services Badminton Team on October 12 at Badminton Hall, Sports Complex, Sector 42, Chandigarh, at 3.00 pm.

All the participants are required to carry individual identity card for verification of eligibility criteria. The selected team will represent the Chandigarh Civil Services Team in the All-India Civil Services Badminton Tournament from October 22nd to 27th, 2013 in Gandhinagar (Gujarat), said KS Bharti, District Sports Officer, Chandigarh Administration.

Two-day golf tourney begins today

A two-day tournament of the CGA Juniors-2013 will begin tomorrow at the Forest Hill Golf Resort.

The main objectives of this programme is to improve the competitive spirit among junior golfers and give due recognition to achievers and to work for the overall development of golf among junior golfers besides supporting junior golfers financially and logistically.

This year, 74 participants are taking part in the tournament in age categories, including 15-17, 13-14 years, 11-12 years, 8-10 years and 5-7 years.

While the first four categories will be playing 36 holes over two days, category-E will play 9 holes for two days. Apart from the winner in each category, there will be prizes for first runners-up and second runners-up as well.

CSR Reddy president of the CGA informed that prominent players participating include Feroz Garewal, Jairaj Sandhu, Vivek Gupta, Karandeep Kochhar, Jaiveer Sandhu, Kartik Digvijay Singh, Aadil Bedi, Vasundhara Thiara, Manjot Singh and Jujhar Singh. “The goal of this programme is to prepare young golfers for achieving a medal in golf for the Olympic Games 2016,” he said. Prize distribution will be held on 29th September 2013 at the CGA Golf Range at 6.00 pm and Lt Gen TS Gill SM, Chief of Staff Western Command, will be the chief guest.

Sandeep wins gold in national championship

Chandigarh tae kwon do team was welcomed at the Chandigarh railway station by officials of the Chandigarh Tae Kwon Do Association (CTA). Sandeep Kundu, an employee of the Chandigarh Police, has won a gold medal during the national championship held at Imphal in Manipur.

Sandeep, earlier, also brought laurels to the city as he has won a Gold medal in the Common Wealth Games 2011, Gold medal in the South Asian Games 2010. He has remained national champion for 10 years. LR Nayyar, president of the CTA, speaking on the occasion, said, “This is the first time that a player representing Chandigarh has won a gold medal in the national championship,” he said. — TNS

Madhu Bahl, principal of KBDAV School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, and Dr GP Pal, a physical education teacher at GMSSS-20 D, have been elected unanimously as president and general secretary, respectively, of the Chandigarh North District Netball Association affiliated to the Netball Association of Chandigarh (regd) in the general body meeting held here today.

Other newly selected office-bearer of the association were vice-presidents Rajiv Tandon, Sudhir Goel, Om Parkash and Dharamveer, Joint Secretaries Shiv Murat, Kamaljit, Anuradha Jairath and SP Yadav and treasurer Suresh Sharma.
