Ravinder Singh (51) had a close shave with death the previous night. As he was about to enter his house, a heavy branch of a tree fell in front of him.

city loses one of its oldest trees: In Sunday’s squall, the city lost its one of the most sacred and oldest trees, popularly known as ‘Triveni’ at Sector 23. The ‘Triveni was said to be 100 years old and grew at Muni Temple. Temple’s priest Deep Chand said it was called Triveni because three trees — banyan, peepal and neem — all were entwined with one another. The tree is 60 feet in height and 15-20 feet in diameter. BSNL workers restore telephone lines near the Housing Board light point at Mani Majra on Monday. BSNL repairs damaged towers on war footing

BSNL officials today deployed staff to repair the damaged towers on a war footing, especially in the villages of Mohali and Panchkula, which were affected by the thunderstorm yesterday. Around 12 towers had developed technical faults due to which cellphone users were facing great problem.

Govt allots Rs 99.71cr to set up NIFT at Kalka
Kalka, September 16
The state government has approved the set up of a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) centre at Manakpur- Nanankchand village, Pinjore Block, by Ministry of Textile, Government of India. As per the requirement, the state government has agreed to provide a land measuring 12-15 acres, as well as funds amounting to Rs 99.71 crore, for the growth of the project.

District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal awarded 7-year jail term to the husband of a PGI doctor in a dowry death case today. The deceased, Dr Rajpal Kaur, a senior resident in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology, PGI, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel accommodation on the hospital campus on July 21, 2006.

Non-bailable warrants against DCHL officials

A local court issued non-bailable warrants against six top functionaries of Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited (DCHL) in a Rs 3 crore cheque bounce case today. Those who are issued warrants include chairman T Venkattram Reddy and vice -chairman T Vinayak Ravi Reddy. The same court, however, issued bailable warrant against the former director of DHCL Menakuru Sukumar Reddy today.

11 city motorists take part in Raid de Himalaya
