3-day moot court competition begins
Patiala, September 14 The first day will witness draw of lots and memorial exchange after the registration. On the basis of the preliminary rounds four teams will qualify for the semis. The final rounds shall be held on September 15 and judged by the judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The ‘Trial Advocacy team of the Year’ and the runners up team will get cash prizes of Rs 18,000 and Rs 9,000, respectively, along with a plaque. Cash prizes will also be given to the best advocate and the team having the best memorial. |

6 hurt in mishap at Zirakpur
Zirakpur, September 14 The injured have been identified as Pankaj, a resident of Ambala city, Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Maloya. Four of Bhupinder Singh’s family members, have been shifted to PGI, Chandigarh, and Dera Bassi hospitals. According to the police, the incident occurred at around five pm when Bhupinder Singh, an employee in PGI, lost his control on his Tata Safari. He firstly collided with the sidewall of the flyover then with a pole and turned turtled to other side of the flyover. Man held for attacking woman doctor at Panchkula hospital
Panchkula, September 14 The accused, Ravinder Inderjit of Sector 8, was accompanying a rickshaw-puller, whom he had allegedly hit with his car and had brought to the hospital for treatment. “In order to avoid any police case, the accused brought the rickshaw-puller to the hospital. The accused asked him to say that he suffered injuries after falling down on his own,” said the police. When the woman doctor, who was on the night duty, said the rickshaw-puller’s CT scan had to be conducted, the accused reportedly said he won’t spend money on it. When the doctor insisted, the accused allegedly hurled abuses at her and also twisted her hand, following which the police was called. The hospital authorities also handed over the CCTV camera footage of the incident to the police. A case has been registered at the Sector 5 police station under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Doctors demand police post
Doctors at the General Hospital, Sector 6, have raised a demand for opening of a police post on the hospital premises. Earlier too, after incidents of the kidnapping of a newborn and the recovery of an abandoned foetus on the premises, the hospital authorities had demanded the setting up of a police post. “All kinds of bad elements visit the hospital, and sometimes in an inebriated condition too. We have been asking for a police post to be set up here for long, but all our requests are falling on deaf ears. We feel unsafe during the night duty,” said a woman doctor. |

Four thefts reported in 2 days
Chandigarh, September 14 In a complaint, Ishwar Dass, a resident of Sector 23, reported that thieves stole Rs 15,000 and silver ornaments from his house yesterday. A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station. In another incident, Neeraj, a resident of Phase II, Ram Darbar, complained to the police that someone stole two mobile phones and Rs 17,000 from his house yesterday. A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. In the third incident, Jagdish Chand of Sector 34 reported that thieves stole a laptop and one gas cylinder from his residence on the intervening night of September 13 and 14. A case was registered at the Sector 34 police station. The fourth incident was reported at Ram Darbar on the intervening night of September 12 and 13. Leela Dhar, the complainant, reported that someone stole an electric metre from plot number 25 near Colony No. 4. A case was registered at the Industrial Area police station. |

Rs 10 lakh snatched from businesman in Mohali
Mohali, September 14 The victim, Neeraj Kumar, who deals in iron business at Industrial Area, was on his way back to home from the factory in his car when the incident occurred at around 8.30 pm. According to Swarndeep Singh, Superintendent of Police (City), the miscreants hit the windowpane of the car of the victim with a brick and threw chilly powder at him. The miscreants, whose number is yet to be ascertained by the police, took away the bag from the car. “It seems that someone known to the victim is involved in the crime,” said Swarndeep Singh. He said the police had started investigation in the case. “We have recorded the statement of the victim and registered a case in this connection at Phase I police station,” said the SP. |

TDI case: Police ‘fails’ to arrest accused
Mohali, September 14 The police had registered a case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC at the Sohana police station against the company and its four top officials on September 9 following the directions of Mohali district courts. The accused persons included TDI’s chairman, DN Taneja, vice-chairman, Ravinder Singh Taneja, Sanyam Dudeja and manager Mohammad Miftah Sami. The police is yet to arrest any of the accused in this connection so far. The complainant, Navinpal Singh, had alleged that as the accused were filthy rich and influential persons, the police was not initiating any action against them. Navinpal Singh along with some other persons, who were affected in the case, today staged a protest in front of Mohali SSP’s office against the police inaction. “Two of the accused were seen performing their duty in local office of the company. But the police seemed not in mood to arrest them,” said the protestors. On the other hand, inspector Deepinder Singh, station house officer of the Sohana police station claimed that the accused were Delhi-based. “One or two of them are abroad while the rest are in Delhi. We are about to send a team there to arrest them,” said Deepinder Singh. Notably, in his complaint to the local court, Navinpal Singh, a resident of Sector 71, alleged that the company had cheated them (Navinpal and his father Gurdev Singh) of Rs 59.62 lakh as it has taken us money for a commercial plot, measuring 204 sq yards plot. But the size of the plot, which was allotted to us was just half of the size (102 sq yds). Navinpal Singh had alleged that the company, after receiving the full and final amount (Rs 59.62 lakh) from them for a commercial plot, measuring 204 sq yards, had obtained their signatures on a typed agreement with blank space left in it claiming that the other higher officials of the company would sign the aforesaid agreement at their office in Delhi and would fill the columns as per the terms and conditions agreed between us and the company. The company, in question, is into the business of selling commercial and residential plots into a mega urban development project, under the name of TDI City Mohali at Sector 110/111 on the Landran-Banur road. |

Mahilpur college emerge victorious
Chandigarh, September 14 In the last league match, the Mahilpur side posted a 1-0 victory over the ace rivals to bag the title. The team entirely outplayed against their rivals, who were low on their confidence in the entire game. Right Striker, Rohit Kumar put the team ahead in the fist half of the match with a smart header enough to Ludhiana’s custodian. In rest of the match, both the teams played an equal level of the competition with the Ludhiana team missing some good chances to level the score. The Ludhiana team lost all the matches of league stage to finish last (fourth position) among the participating teams in league stage. In another league match, the DAV College, Hoshiarpur, blanked the local favorites SGGS College, Sector 26, by 1-0 to attain the second spot. With this defeat, the local side attained third place. Running on hard luck, the local team failed to convert free kicks and open attacks into goals that cost them the match.
