Hot shots blow
Punjabi actors know how to flex their muscles and some of them have bodies to die for. Here’s a quick check on the fitness regimens and dietary habits of some of Pollywood’s handsome hunks…
Jasmine Singh

A perfectly sculpted body…any guesses who fits into this slot other than Hrithik Roshan or Salman Khan? But that's Bollywood; coming to our very own Pollywood there is long line of young studs who have a ten-on-ten body. Read Aarya Babbar, Rahul Dev, Kartar Cheema, Karan Kundra, Aman Dhaliwal. Hitting the gym each day, hiring the best of trainers, following a strict dietary routine…the new crop of the Punjabi actors will tickle you with their on screen comedy, make you fall in love with their romantic songs but above all enchant you with their wonderful bodies!

Fit & fine

Aarya Babbar

He is the Babbar sher of the Punjabi film industry and he is going through a body transformation! Working with Hrithik Roshan's trainers for the shoot of his upcoming Punjabi film in November, Aarya Babbar believes in good health and for that he doesn't mind putting an extra effort.

"I eat the right nutrients and four to five small meals a day. The fitness regime includes weights and cardio," says Aarya. There is something that is very important in his fitness regime. "The right sleep and relaxation; our muscles flex when we are sleeping, a proper sleep is must for good health."

Filmi funda: The Punjabi film industry is growing and actors get a chance to push their limits. Besides, I think everyone is trying to put their best foot forward in films.

Health first

Kartar Cheema

He was on the cover page of the Health magazine in 2012. The Sikander of the Punjabi film Sikander is a health freak. Whether he is shooting or not, flexing out at the gymnasium is an essential part of his routine. "Exercising is not something I remind myself to do; I live it each day," shares Kartar, who works with a personal trainer at his gym Body Zone. He is particular about his diet, "Balanced diet is the trick for me." Cross-training twice a week, two days abs and cardio followed by gym, and a rest for one day is what his routine is like.

Filmi funda: Punjabi films have a wider audience now, their reach has increased, which is why now an actor or actress is seen on screen by many people. Now, we have our own PIFA, our own red carpet events, premiers and launches, which means more public appearances.

Mixing up

Karan Kundra

Fitness is a part of his lifestyle and he doesn't conform to a strict routine. "Instead of any routine, I club different activities like dancing, martial arts, trekking, gym, running on the beach etc," adds the actor, who will be seen in his next Punjabi release Mere Yaar Kaminey.

Filmi funda: We are getting bigger and better, so shouldn't we be looking better!

Natural course

Aman Dhaliwal

We saw him in Putt Jattan De — Aman Dhaliwal relies on natural proteins and a workout outside the gym. "I do 300-400 dips at one time; this way the entire body is exercised. This kind of fitness stays with us throughout life as compared to the one that you get in gym by picking dumbbells," says Aman. His eating habits are controlled; fruits and cereals in the morning, proteins in the afternoon and salad for dinner. "I eat small meals a day at regular intervals."

Filmi funda: Punjabi films are now watched by non-Punjabis as well. Their reach has increased, so we need to be at the level of Bollywood.

Personal touch

Rahul Dev

He is one name that needs no introduction when it comes to a perfect body. He hasn't done any shirtless act in Punjabi films but this doesn't make us take our eyes away from his sculpted and chiselled body! We saw him recently in Putt Jattan De — Rahul Dev is an icon for a perfect body. Contrary to what you are expecting, this actor believes in making use of the anatomy of the body without misusing it in any way. "I am a Punjabi and I love food, so how do I keep fit? Well, for that my fitness regimen includes all compound natural movements, including bending, lifting, squatting, lunging, pushing and pulling. It is important to mobilise your body," adds Rahul. He shares something interesting, "Muhammad Ali had a bigger fist, which means a bigger heart, which further means he could take more pounding."

Filmi funda: I think Dharmendra had a perfect body and even Amitabh Bachchan looked amazing in Kala Pathar; fitness should be part of life and body-building according to taste.

The creative cut
Designer Maheen Kardar Ali from Pakistan comes to India with her interesting invention jumpsuit gharara, which she hopes will trigger a trend here as well. We catch up with her…
Ashima Batish

Plazzo suits made a grand entry into our wardrobes straight from Pakistan through the Wagah border! It's been two years now and plazzo pants still make for an interesting alternative to the staple ethnic-wear - churidaars and salwars.

As neighbours, at least on the fashion front, Indian and Pakistan have more often than not shared a lot. This time, from Pakistan, the contribution has been made by Maheen Kardar Ali in the form of jumpsuit gharara, already a popular trend in her country, which she hopes will trigger a trend in India as well. Maheen is in India to put up an exhibition of her designs from prêt, couture and diffusion line. It's not her first time in India; she has come before and floored people with her work. If she is a celebrity designer back home, she is quite popular in the fashion circles of India as well. But there is more to Maheen than her beautiful creations. She started thirteen years ago, when the fashion industry in Pakistan did not even exist.

Even better, her label, Karma, contributes to six segments of fashion. "From Karma's inception, we resolved to function like a corporate firm," shares the designer. By this she means that there is an audit department, separate production house for each segment, design sections, merchandise units, "Only creativity doesn't guarantee success. You need to function wisely to achieve your aims." Karma now boasts of thirteen stores across Pakistan and even has its presence in the Gulf.

Coming back to her experimental bridal-wear, jumpsuit ghararas, she has designed keeping the modern bride in mind. While the silhouettes have been derived from the West, the embroidery and embellishments are very traditional. "Art Deco, a visual arts design style, has deeply influenced me. I have used motifs of the same on my creations." She feels that jumpsuit gharara is a befitting tribute to the confident women of today, who wish to incorporate personal sense of style in their bridal-wear.

While jumpsuit ghararas feature in the couture line, Julie jumpsuits, a nomenclature that she picked, falls under the luxury prêt segment - Karma Pink. "My label not only caters to the elite, but also to the masses; the reason why I have diversified. People can buy outfits that begin from Rs 1,000 even in India."

Her ensemble also comprises lehangas, but not without a twist. She has added an extra dupatta to her exquisite couture pieces. "One to cover the head and other to drape around the arm; all in a bid to up the royal quotient of the pieces," says Maheen.

Maheen feels fortunate to be a part of the Pakistan fashion industry that is trying to catch up with the flourishing markets of the Gulf and India.

TRENDSETTER
Natural flair

Fashion is an art which has to be cultivated without being overtly conscious about it. People who know this art, can be called trendsetters. A student of interior designing, Shivam Kalra looks for a natural 'stance' where fashion is concerned.

Your sense of style…

Those who naturally blend in with the occasion and those who can carry formals with ease seem fashionable to me.

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

My silver Rado watch.

Brand crazy or street pick-up?

Brands are a sure bet.

Who would be your style icon?

Hrithik Roshan has no parallel.

Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity?

Oh! No idea everybody seems quite up to the mark.

Which look would your prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous?

Sporty would do for me.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Spiked hairstyles look awful.

Your take on accessories?

Besides the regular classy watch and belt, I do like wear a bracelet at times.

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

When I can carry out a conversation with anyone comfortably, that gives me confidence.

it’s rocking
Folk lure

The latest sound that is creating a buzz in Bollywood is the title track of the film, Shudh Desi Romance, featuring Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor. Interspersed with the traditional sounds of folk and pop chorus, this track rides on its peppy beats and typically Bollywood lyrics. The song has been sung by Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade, while the lyrics are given by Jaideep Sahni. Let's hear what the city folks have to say about it…

Feeling the young pulse

This is the new sound of Bollywood, the kind that relates with the youth of today and perhaps that is what makes this song so popular among the youngsters. I really like the track and it has been playing on in my car since its release.

Kritharth Grover, student

It's different

While most of the Bollywood songs sound more or less the same, this song is a little different from the rest. It has a very different feel to it and the beats are pretty good too. I like it.

Nayani Maheshwari, housewife

Pepping it up

If you like the kind of songs, which are peppy and can make you dance at the drop of a hat, well this one is surely your pick. I like it purely because of its desi touch and the chorus too.

Dry in peace

Oh that cumbersome routine called laundry drying! Every week when you fill up your washing machine up to the brim and then fall short of space to dry the clothes, you inevitably curse the routine while arranging chairs as make shift drying stands and locating hitherto unknown hooks to support the hangers.

If this is your story, then Bonita's Maximo is tailor made for you. Keeping in mind the laundry woes of people living in small urban homes, the leading home utility products company has come up with a new dynamic product to cater to their customer requirements more effectively.

At a time the drying stand can accommodate a washing machine full of ready to dry laundry, sparing you the horror of spreading around your wet clothes to dry in multiple rooms and on unlikely objects like chairs.

Wheels provide for easy movement of the stand which can be adjusted as per the movement of the sun. It also facilitates both the indoor and outdoor movement according to the customer's convenience.

Maximo comes with a fully adjustable shelf height which enables it to use the vertical space in a balcony or a room rather than expand the drying space horizontally. Multiple rods make it a three tier hanging stand with special sideways brackets with hanger slots to hang clothes. Maximo has as many as 24 rods for drying. The dual rods also contribute to greater stability of this all-useful and customer-friendly product.

And once the clothes are all dry and ready to be shifted back to the wardrobe, it can be rolled up and folded into a two dimensional structure that can recline against the wall and occupy little space.

Maximo which is priced at Rs 3995 boasts of greater strength and durability. — TNS

CELEB POINT
Dream come true
Divya Dutta

As I watched Mandi, a film starring my favourite actresses Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil, I was totally in awe of the one who had made it. I, as a child, was introduced to the phenomenon called Shyam Benegal. There after I saw all his films. I took huge pride in school when my friends spoke about how they liked a certain formula film and I used to talk at length about Shyam Benegal cinema!

As I joined cinema, he obviously was on the top of my wish-list but I didn't know how I would meet him. Train to Pakistan made that possible for me when I first met Shyam Benegal at a screening of my film. As he said, 'My dear young lady, you are very good in the film', all I could say was, 'can I please work with you?'

I thought I had been very embarrassing but I heard from his office the next day and I was asked to come and meet Shyam babu as he was fondly called!

I was so excited and nervous sitting in front of my favourite filmmaker. He saw me through his lens and took a pause. Which for me was a lifetime of baited breath!

"Young lady, the film has been cast but I like your face, will you do a dance number in my film?" he said.

Dance number in a Benegal film? I had never heard of it! But I just said yes! And what an experience of actual filmmaking it was! We shot for his film Samar. I was the newcomer, so Shyam babu asked me to make paranthas for everyone as an introduction and the entire cast was assigned to help the young lady to feel at home with the unit!

What I loved about his unit was that no one confined themselves to their vanity van. Shyam babu made sure we ate together and had singing dancing programmes together. My cooking with the other unit continued too. It felt like family and when I performed my first so called folk item song which Shyam babu made me choreograph too, all the unit members sat there to cheer me up. Oh how will I ever forget the applause!

There after I did Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and then Welcome to Sajjanpur with him! I was always treated as the little girl of that family. I remember for Welcome to Sajjanpur, I had to learn to ride a scooter and he made a production guy stand at every corner to pick up 'the girl' if she falls while practicing. The role won me many awards and a stronger desire to keep working with him!

Today after five years, I shoot with Shyam Benegal again for Samvidhan and what a homecoming it is! I am so excited to be back. I keep meeting him as there's no one who can be as well versed and full of so many anecdotes as him. I love listening to him but to be directed by him is something else! As I stand on the sets listening in awe to his instructions to me, I go on a flashback mode. This man whose films I've grown up being in love with, I stand in front of him being directed by him! He sees me smile and says, "You look happy young lady." How would I ever be able to tell you Shyam babu, what it means for your young lady to be holding this precious moment of hearing 'action' from you! And to be called one of your favourite actors! Dreams do come true.

Tell-tile sign

Tiles....what size, colour, finish? With the vast choice available today, selection can be quite a task. Bathrooms and kitchens primarily have seen an injection of new designs and materials recently. So what's new?

Technology has propelled tile design to another level. Methods such as digital printing and ink-jet printing are transforming less expensive tiles like porcelain and ceramic and giving them looks of marble, limestone, granite, stone, and wood.

nWood finish is gaining immense popularity, particularly petrified, aged and reclaimed wood finish. Manufacturers are pushing all boundaries in perfecting that look. For example, traditional hardwood planks and patterns like parquet and herringbone. This is fabulous for those of us who find authentic hard wood floors to maintain. Sizes available are huge and tiles of different widths and lengths can be mixed.

The industrial look is still a favourite with urban homes and look alike concrete slabs are now available in wall and floor tiles, providing a much quicker and cleaner installation.

Current trends also show that the floor tile sizes are increasing to as much as 3' x 6', a less expensive alternative to traditional slabs of marble and fewer joints means less maintenance.

Glass tiles are a good option too, giving it a rich and bright look. Sizes range from 1" x 1" to 18" x18". They have different shapes such as small round circles called "pennies", mini, medium or large rectangles, mini, medium or large squares and sticks. They are smoothly non porous water tight and their super glossy finish reflects light giving a sense of space. When used sparingly, vivid glass tiles can provide exciting visual highlights. Conversely, when covering an entire bathroom wall, glass tiles can create a luxurious spa-like atmosphere.

Textured and 3D tiles in a predominantly monochromatic scheme are great for adding another dimension to an interior and perfect where pattern is a minimum.

We also see the return of the classic ceramic subway tile in various glossy colours. These can look equally good in the traditional running or stacked method or even herringbone applied.

Artisan tiles are also enjoying a revival these days. Usually handmade with Moroccan or Spanish influence and a traditional pattern, these tiles can break up a block of colour by adding a depth of character. A very popular design is Arabesque, which is available in a variety of colour, size and finish and even a bevelled design.

Every tile has its unique design factor and marrying it up with additional elements of design doesn't have to be so daunting. Just bear in mind your two basic considerations: design concept and budget.

Amitabh to play Vidya’s father?

Shoojit Sarkar's next is going to be an interesting one. He has signed Vidya Balan and megastar Amitabh Bachchan in his next venture. After playing a terminally ill young son to Vidya, Amitabh Bachchan will now play Vidya Balan's father. Both the actors have given their nod to the project.

A source says, "It is the story of a father and his daughter and the dilemma that Bachchan's character faces as his daughter fails to get a suitable groom. Sircar and Bachchan had earlier worked in Shoe Bite together but the film is yet to see the light of the day. Ever since that, the duo wanted to work together and now it is finally happening."

Instead of confirming the buzz, the director remained non-committal, "Whenever I write a story idea, I bounce it off to Mr Bachchan. I owe him a film. I am in the process of writing one and will show it to him when it's ready." Amitabh and Vidya earlier worked in R. Bali's Paa and the mother-son pair was highly applauded by the audience. Both share a great working relationship and looking forward to work again.

Clash of the Titans

It seems that Shah Rukh Khan and Ekta Kapoor will have a face-off once again. SRK's Happy New Year will release in Diwali 2014 and Ekta is planning to release her next film starring Shahid Kapoor on the same day.

Unveiling in style

Both Ranbir Kapoor and new actress Pallavi Sharda are not promoting Besharam. Ranbir is in Sri Lanka at the moment. Pallavi will be launched with a song called Loot Gaye and then a poster of her with Ranbir will be launched.

Yaami can cook

Yaami Gautam loves to cook. She talks about the kind of movies she is doing and her life in Chandigarh.

Outsider in Bollywood

As actors, everyone is given the same platform, and have similar challenges to face. We all have to work hard without coming up with any excuses. I have no insecurity about not having a Bollywood background. One can't run away from image management, branding or PR as they're all part of this profession. I might attend events and promotions but I cannot forget that this is all due to the film that I did. My focus is to choose good films. How much of it is possible only time will tell. Did I not do a Vicky Donor without being the so-called 'insider' of Bollywood? With time, I feel these terms have been diffused. We are seeing so many people from non-filmi background entering Bollywood.

Comfort zone

I grew up in a guarded, close-knit family in Chandigarh. Most of my growing-up years were spent with my friends chilling out and gossiping over coffee and croissants at coffee shops. Even if I was not an actress, I would be found lounging there because it is out of habit than anything else.

Small town upbringing

It is difficult to be on your own in this big city and operate single-handedly in the industry. My family is in Chandigarh and I am pretty attached to them. I have been brought up on middle class values and a basic understanding to not worry about things that may or may not happen in future. My mom keeps worrying about me especially because I am an introvert and don't socialise much. I like to read books or watch films in my free time.

Cooking up a storm

I love to eat and cook. I can cook a variety of North Indian dishes especially kadhai chicken and yummy halwas. I can also make a quick pasta and pizza. Cooking makes me feel happy and relaxed. I wish I had some free time to learn new dishes from my mother, who's an amazing cook.

Screen absence

It is by choice that I have taken up less number of films. I am making a conscious effort to do different roles. If I wanted to, I would have signed many films which were offered to me post Vicky Donor but I chose not to. I don't want to repeat myself. Both my films — Prabhudheva's next, and a film co-starring Ali Zafar will have me essaying different roles. Working with both of them was a great learning experience as well as fun.

Wax eloquent

Prabhudeva revealed his wax statue at India's first celebrity wax museum in Lonavala on September 2.

The 40-year-old choreographer-turned-filmmaker dropped a few lines in his social media space expressing his happiness over the unveiling of his wax statue.

"Today is a very important day for me.. just unveiled my wax statue for the Lonavla wax museum.. I'm touched!!!" he tweeted.

AR Rahman, Shah Rukh Khan, Michael Jackson and Kapil Dev are a few others who have their wax statues in the Lonavala wax museum.

Lucky boy

Vidyut Jamwal is extremely good looking. He has signed an endorsement with a high-end apparel brand for a whopping amount. Rajkumar Santoshi has also announced that his next movie will star the newbie.

Record breaker

Sushant Singh Rajput has locked lips 27 times in Shuddh Desi Romance, breaking Emraan Hashmi's record of 17 kisses in one film. Sushant has kissed both Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor in the movie.

Priyanka avoids Shahid

It seems Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor are avoiding each other once again. Shahid was promoting his movie at a particular reality show and Priyanka only stepped out when he had left the premises.

Praise worthy

Aamir Khan praised the actor and producer Sohum Shah at the success party of Ship of Theseus and Sohum's own brother could not believe it. He is extremely proud of his brother and the movie's contribution to cinema.

Lunchbox, a step closer to the Oscars?

TFF has announced its official programme selections for its 40th anniversary edition. Every year thousands of industry and cinema lovers flock to this festival in the beautiful mountain town of Telluride, Colorado, without knowing the programme which is unveiled only on the first day with very limited number of films from across the world selected for screening at this prestigious festival. "I am thrilled to be in Telluride and in a line up that includes my favourite filmmakers- the Coen brothers, Jason Rietman and Robert Redford. It's very surreal to see our little film getting such overwhelming responses here; hope The Lunchbox continues to bring accolades to India," says Ritesh Batra.

This festival is also very significant for the fact that many of the films selected for screening at TFF have gone on to win the Oscars in recent years. These include Fog of War, Brokeback Mountain, The Lives of Others, Babel, The Last King of Scotland, Juno, Slumdog Millionaire, Up In The Air, The King's Speech, Black Swan, A Separation, The Artist, The Descendants and Argo.

Will this festival, therefore, mark the start of this film's Oscar journey?

The Lunchbox, featuring Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui had its premiere at the International Critics' Week of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it won the audience award, Grand Rail d'Or and then went on to win the Audience Choice Award at the World Cinema Festival in Amsterdam. The Lunchbox will release in India on September 20.

Playing Arjun

It is said that 'one's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things'; no one can understand this sentiment better than Shaheer Sheikh. Hailing from a modest family in Jammu & Kashmir, Shaheer has taken the road less travelled and is currently preparing to play the biggest role of his lifetime. Shaheer will be seen as 'Arjun' in Star Plus' magnum opus Mahabharat, which is soon to hit the tube.

Explains Shaheer, "I always wanted to play the character of a warrior prince; there is something majestic about holding a sword. So when I was approached for the role, I was completely game." Shaheer had to work hard for the role; cut down on his outings and watch his food habits in order to not just look the part, but live like Arjun and showcase inherent characteristics of a peerless warrior. He had to work on his physique and overall composure.

In order to not over-expose himself and look the part, Shaheer chose not to take up any other role. For over a year he declined offers that came his way. Great going! — HRM
