Ill-effects of corruption highlighted at seminar

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 3
The Giani Ditt Singh Welfare Society in collaboration with the Vigilance Bureau (VB), Punjab, organised a seminar to create awareness about the ill-effects of corruption and to suggest the means to eradicate corrupt practices from society.

Balwinder Singh Randhawa, DSP, vigilance, Fatehgarh Sahib, was the chief guest, whereas Amandeep Singh Aman Gandhi, president of the Giani Ditt Singh Welfare Society, presided over the seminar. The seminar was attended by sarpanchs and panchs of villages, nambardars, MCs, eminent personalities and the public.

Addressing the seminar, DSP Randhawa urged the masses not to grease the palm of government officials for getting their work done. He said if any one demands bribe, people must inform the Vigilance Department about it, so that the culprit could be nabbed red-handed.

He told the public that a toll-free number 1800-1800-1000 had been set up by the Vigilance Bureau. Besides reporting any corrupt activity on this toll-free number, one could also contact him on his cellphone number 85588-08947. He said complaints could also be lodged on the website of the vigilance department, www.vigilancebureaupunjab.org, and could be e-mailed to dspvbfgs@ yahoo.com.

Amandeep Singh Gandhi said the society would conduct public meetings and seminars to educate the masses about various government schemes and to prepare them to play pro-active role for the eradication of social evils and corrupt practices from society. — OC

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Dera Bassi, September 3
Thieves decamped with cash, Australian dollars and jewellery from a house at Lalru Mandi yesterday. The police has registered a case against the unidentified thieves and has started investigations.

The thieves allegedly entered the house at 1 pm yesterday when the owner, Surinder Singh, and his family were out for some work. The thieves had stolen Rs 5 lakh, 8,000 Australian dollars and gold ornaments. The incident came to the light when the family members returned the house in the evening.

ASI Kuldeep Chand, who is investigating the matter, said forensic experts had visited the house and took samples from different angles. He said the thieves would be arrested soon.

Mata Gujri College holds religious programme

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 3
To promote the spirit of Sikhism among the younger generation, Mata Gujri College organised a religious programme on the eve of Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Harpal Singh, Head Granthi, Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, presided over the function.

He said: “The students should live a simple life with high thinking. They should devote their precious time with elders, who are a good source of inspiration.” He motivated the students to be a good human being. — OC

Man held with smack

Banur, September 3
The police has arrested a person and seized 10 grams of smack from his possession. The accused has been identified as Nazeerideen, a resident of Ward No.5, Banur.

The accused was nabbed near the SYL Bridge, Faridpur village, during a naka. A case has been registered against the accused. — OC

Accused files plea for separate cell
Says being threatened, abused in barrack

Fearing threat to his life, dismissed UT police constable Basant Kumar, accused in the murder of Inspector Sucha Singh, filed an application before the local court for providing him a separate cell in jail for security reasons.

In his application, Basant Kumar stated that he was being threatened, abused and harassed in jail.

It was on the intervening night of June 7 and 8 that Inspector Sucha Singh, posted with the Chandigarh Traffic Police, was on night check along with his driver and Home Guards volunteer Jatinder Singh when they rounded up a couple, who was walking down, on suspicion at 2.15 am. Basant, who was wanted in a double murder case in Sonepat on April 18, after stabbing the inspector and the Home Guards volunteer had fled with his female accomplice Sarita after snatching their Gypsy, which they later abandoned.

Basant and Sarita were later arrested by the Haryana police from Delhi. On August 24, the UT police filed a chargesheet in the court against Basant.Today a copy of the chargesheet was handed over to Basant before the judge directing the jail authorities to reply and committed the case to the District and Sessions Court.

Sexual assault: Rickshaw-puller gets five-year jail term

A local court awarded a sentence of five years to a rickshaw-puller for sexual assault on an eight-year-old boy here today.

The convict, Mukesh Kumar, was arrested by the police three months ago on the complaint of the father of the boy, a resident of Sector 30.

It was on May 30 that the father of the victim lodged a complaint with the police that some richkshaw-puller kidnapped his son by luring him and assaulted him sexually. Next day, the victim identified the accused.

Today, while disposing of the case, the court awarded 5-year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 to the convict under Section 10 of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The court also awarded a sentence of 3 years along with Rs 1000 fine under Section 365 of IPC. Both the sentences will run concurrently.

Lovepreet Kaur’s suicide case shifted

The case of 23-year-old Lovepreet Kaur’s suicide involving the Superintendent of Police (Crime), Punjab, Mohan Lal, has been shifted from the court of judicial magistrate (first class) to the court of Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge (senior division) here today.

The police has registered a case against Mohan Lal for abetting her suicide. The victim, with whom the police officer had reportedly illicit relations, had jumped to death from the rented flat of Mohan Lal on the sixth floor of Rishi Apartments at Zirakpur on May 27.

According to the police, she earlier too made an attempt to suicide at the government accommodation of Mohan Lal at Batala in the presence of his wife, Promila, by cutting her wrist with a knife.

Now, the proceeding of the case would take place in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (senior division), which has set September 9 as next hearing date.

Accused seeks relief from court

In the Excise and Taxation Officer Ranjit Singh's suicide case, accused Superintendent of Police (Vigilance), Punjab, Amadeep Kaur has requested the court to permanently exempt her from personally appearing before it during the proceedings.

The suspended officer today moved an application in this regard in the court of Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge (Senior Division). The court will hear the pleas tomorrow.

Ranjit Singh had committed suicide on April 23, 2011, after being arrested by the vigilance department in a graft case. His wife, Manjit Kaur, claimed he was implicated in a false case.

The police had registered a case against five persons including the SP under Sections 306, 166, 167, 195, 218, 332, 353 and 120-B of the IPC and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, following directions of the Mohali district court.

Easy victory for GMSSS-26 girls

In the ongoing Inter-School Hockey Tournament for Girls (U-14), Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 26, defeated Government High School, Sector 25, 4-0 at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, today. Yogita helped her team to get lead in the second minute of the match while Sukhmani doubled the lead in the eighth minute. Manpreet and Kiran sealed the match with scoring a brace each in 22nd and 33rd minute of the match respectively.

In the second match, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, went down against SGGSS, Sector 35, 1-0. In the closely contested match, the team, got the breakthrough when right-in Rachel hit the wooden plank in the 36th minute.

In the third match of the day, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, defeated Ryan International School, Sector 49, 2-0. Aayana posted both the goals in fourth and 15th minute of the match.

In the matches of girls' (U-17) group, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, routed Ryan International School, Sector 49, 4-0. In a one-sided affair, Shilpi scored the goal in the very first minute while Saroj put the team ahead by 2-0 in the fourth minute. Just after four minutes, she scored the third goal. Later, in the 10th minute, Manisha scored a goal to seal the match.

In a match of girls' (U-19) group, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, 3-0. Anam( 5th minute(, Meenakshi (32nd minute) and Reena (48th minute) scored one goal each.

Jalandhar overcome Mohali hurdle, win by 253 runs

Jalandhar registered a 253-run victory over Mohali during the Katoch Shield Cricket Tournament today. Resuming from their overnight score of 111, Jalandhar declared their second innings at 209 for 4 in 41 overs. Mandeep Singh scored an unbeaten 41 off 53 balls, inclusive of 3 boundaries, while Himanshu Satyawan scored an unbeaten half century( 57 off 26 balls), studded with five boundaries and four sixes.

After mustering up 364 run lead, Jalandhar declared the inning.

on the other hand, Mohali had a bad start in the second innings with opener Sunny Sohal going back to pavilion without opening his account.

Thereafter, Harsrup Singh (15) and Gurkirat Mann (28) added 43 runs for the second wicket. Mann was caught by Shubek Gill for 28 off 31 balls, inclusive of 5 boundaries.

The team lost three quick wickets of Sachin Sohal (3), Harsrup Singh (15) and Bir Kanwar (11), reducing Mohali to 63 for 5.

For the sixth wicket, Anmoljeet Singh (29) and Mayank Sidana (7) scored 39 runs before Mayank was caught by Mandeep off Yogesh Kumar.

Mohali lost the last four wickets for 9 runs before getting all out on 111 in 36.3 overs.

Left-arm spinner Yogesh Kumar was the pick of the day. He took 5 wickets after conceding just 23 runs.

He was ably supported by Rahul Sharma (2 for 24) and Navdeep Singh (2 for 24). Jalandhar got six points after winning the match.

Northern Frontier win in athletics

The team of Northern Frontier, Dehradun, stood first in the 1500 mt race during the first day of the 33rd Inter-Frontier Athletics Championship at the Basic Training Centre (BTC), Bhanu, ITBP base, today.

The team of North-Eastern Frontier (Shillong) stood second. Eastern Frontier, Lucknow, finished third in the event. Earlier, the event was inaugurated by HS Goraya, PMG, Deputy Inspector General, BTC, Bhanu.

A total of 207 participants will compete in 23 athletics events during the championship, which includes races, javelin throw, shot put, decathlon and pole vault. A tough competition is expected.
