Politically correct
Sadri, a cut-sleeve jacket, which is the hallmark of political dressing, goes under the scissors to don a chic look
Ashima Batish

(L-R) Sadirs by Arjun saluja and Aneeth Arora This is a costume mostly worn by those who enjoy the position of power. Beginning from the top of the hierarchy, it is often seen on President Pranab Mukherjee. Shashi Tharoor, minister of state for HRD, supports a contemporary version of it. Sadri, the cut-sleeve jacket, has for long been the unannounced uniform of politicians. It's also gender neutral, for Sushma Swaraj is often seen complementing her handloom sarees with a sadri and if you go by the shades, she sure has a good collection.

Among the revamped versions of Indian classic outfits like Jodhpuries, Nehru jackets, salwars, kurtas, sadri got its chance, courtesy the politicians, who swear by it. This costume doesn't promise glamour, not at least in the original state. Thus from time to time, it has been subjected to a few changes--a few loops or a zip or change in the cut. It looked so fashionable when Gaurav Kapoor wore the humble sadri while hosting the most glamourous annual event, IPL.

Nupur Kanoi experiemnts Designer Aneeth Arora has re-interpreted sadri to make it look like a mix of a traditional jacket and a western waistcoat. "The structure of the garment is sacrosanct, it hasn't been fiddled with. It's the embroidery part that brings in some change and also what it is paired with." The designer, known for her experiments with textiles, feels the texture of the fabric comes out best when working with old and simple designs. "Sadri is uncomplicated, its elegance doesn't get lost in the complex silhouette. The focus thus only remains on the fabric."

If Nehru jacket is a classic piece of garment, reserved for special occasions, sadri, a modest overcoat, can be drawn out of the wardrobe on all occasions. "It's not formal, yet pair it up with a shirt and one is ready for a party. I have tampered with the arm holes, which are a little low in my creations." The derived version, she suggests, should be used as a substitute of western waistcoats, "These add to the variety of men's wear for formal occasions, which is otherwise limited to bandhagalas and coats for formal occasions."

Not just on the ramps in India, sadri has been off late seen on the international runaways also. Be it Phoebe Philo of Celine, Christopher Lemaire of Hermes, Kris Van Assche of Dior Homme, the designers have modified sadri to suit their clientele. Designer Nupur Kanoi, who too has experimented with the jacket, says, "Sadri makes for an interesting addition to the cuts and costumes from India that have inspired international designers. Only this time, it's not the intricacy but the simplicity of the garment that is the selling point."

It's one of the rare Indian outfits that are not defined by whom it is meant for. Designer Arjun Saluja, famous for his androgynous designs, feels sadri allows that flexibility. "Renditions of the same have been a part of my collections and both men and women have bought it," he says. He finds it best paired with a short kurta or a tee. His most popular interpretation of the design is a long cut-sleeve coat.

As designers work towards modifying sadri from politicians' staple wear to a chic waistcoat, it will be interesting to see how it will enter the retail segment!

Animated conversation
Krishna Mohan, the creative supervisor of new series Chhota Bheem-Kung Fu Dhamaka, feels the animation industry is in the need of government support
Amarjot Kaur

Be it Walt Disney's Micky Mouse and Donald Duck series or Warner Brother's Looney Toons, animation has never failed to entertain us! That our childhood continues to live in the stories of those animated characters, it speaks volumes about our love for them. With Chota Bheem series making waves in the Indian animation industry, Krishna Mohan, the creative supervisor (3D) of new series Chhota Bheem-Kung Fu Dhamaka, talks about the Indian animation industry and its scope.

While crediting his knowledge to the 15 years of experience in the animation industry, Krishan arrives at Punjab Kala Bhawan to attend a seminar organised by Arena Animation. "The Kung Fu Dhamaka series of Chota Bheem is just in the initial stage and the film will be released in 2015," he says.

However, considering that the Indian cinema has not much to its credit when it comes to animation, Krishan says, "When compared to the animation industry abroad, India does not lack in manpower or technique. The problem is, that unlike abroad, we do not have the 'luxury of time' and good sponsorship."

He adds, "We need the government's involvement in starting up good animation institutes, which would provide for qualified employees. Many production houses have shut down because of the absence of investors, including Rhythm and Hues, which gave the visual effects for the film, Life of a Pi.”

Go global

Amartya Ray and Preetam Saikia, both from Middlesex University, gave an overview on the global scenario of animation and multimedia education. The university announced that one student from Arena Animation will be given 100 per cent scholarship while five others will be given 50 per cent scholarship when they come to Middlesex University to complete the final year of 'Arena Animation International Program (AAIP)' and this way they will acquire a dual degree.

Get the basics right
Five elements are all that’s required to get the daily bread. Tanbir Chahal warns against the existing bakery products

It's a detour from the flourishing baking practices where, on the product, the four sentence recipe replaces the never ending list of ingredients. Five elements are all that's required to get the daily bread. "We use only five ingredients to make the bread. There's not even a hint or a drop of the sixth element," Tanbir Chahal, of Food For Thought and Company, doesn't just put the spotlight on his latest venture Bread Basics but rather warns against the already existing bakery products in the market.

Of all the things, one's daily bread needs to be free of all the vices and even suspicion. He adds, "It all started when we had a visiting chef from Switzerland and he glanced through the list of ingredients of the market breads and their mixes." He adds, "The list of harmful chemicals runs beyond the preservatives and includes improvers and bromates and many other harmful chemicals."

To make matters worse, there's no expiry date to guide you along. "They only put 'Best Before' on all products. And that date usually is a far away date, aimed at increasing the shelf-life of the bread." He adds, "So many of the chemicals used are known to make the children hyperactive and some of them have effects as grave as cancer. A lot of them are also banned is other countries."

For those who can't be bothered about baking at home, he tosses an alternative rather than a recipe. "Our signature, sprouted whole wheat bread, is made from everyday small batches of fresh, milled flour. They claim to stick to the bare basics. Wherein the wheat is washed, soaked, sprouted, grinded and then added to a sprinkling of salt, sugar and a protein in the form wheat gluten." That may or may not sound simple, but certainly sounds healthy.

CELEB POINT
To brother, with love
Divya Dutta

When I proudly held you in my arms...a bundle of joy, literally, I rushed to thank mom for gifting me such a sweet brother. I wouldn't let anyone touch you. You were mine. My little brother!

I loved to play with you, to pamper you, to give you all the love I had and then I went away. Away to Delhi to study, away from you! And I missed you very much. I made friends, I had fun but it was something else with my little bro! You were too small then. I remember when I came to visit home and we played like old times and we laughed and we fought. When I when back, you told mom, "I like that girl who visits our house...ha ha!"

And mom didn't waste time in bringing your sister back to you. I know I've played many pranks on you. Teased you and you've been so protective all through! Buying me chocolates from your pocket money, saving the favorite candy for me and holding me in your little arms if I ever cried! Felt like you are my best friend! As we grew up and I joined films, as you saw me fighting it out alone, you chose to come and study in Mumbai and be my silent yet strong support system. I feel your soothing presence by my side. I remember, at a party, when I fell in front of all photographers, you walked past, disowning me! And laughed so much later. Once we went shopping and I loved this pair of earrings. But left it as I thought it was very expensive and you surprised me with those earrings on my birth day. And that tight hug you gave me when you saw the earrings scene in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag!

All those moments made precious and many more to come...just an open letter to you dear Rahul, for being who you are in my life! Love you bhai, Happy Rakshabandhan!

Behind the scenes with Sonakshi

Sonakshi Sinha talks about her phenomenal success and her simple life at home.

A protected life

I have always had a sheltered life, but my family members have given enough space for myself and have guided me all the time. If I wake up late or my bedroom is messed up, my mother shouts at me. It's really amazing that they don't treat me like a star.

The 100 crore club

It's a trend today everyone is talking about. Tomorrow it will be Rs 200 crore. It's a sign of good business but Rs 100 crore doesn't come into my pocket. It is going to the producer's pocket. If films are doing so well, lots of factors are to be taken into account.

Commercial streak

My first love will always be commercial cinema because those are the kind of films that I would love to watch as an audience. I am not apologetic about the fact that I love singing and dancing. It's a part of me.

On marriage

I want to enjoy my life and relax. I want to chill. I don't know but I am not thinking of marriage now. The profession I am in; it's too hectic. I want to give all my time to my husband after marriage and I want all his time.

A regretful past

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is convinced that she was "making too much" money as a child star. The 27-year-old actress admitted to Oprah Winfrey that her problems began after she found fame as a child, reported a website.

"When I moved to LA after filming Mean Girls, I was 17 or 18. I was around people so I wasn't lonely and I didn't pay close enough attention to people being around for the wrong reasons. I was making too much. I wasted so much money; I was living at a hotel and I had an apartment. I wasn't really being guided. I didn't think about it and I didn't listen to my family when they told me, 'Come back to New York,' she said.

When Winfrey asked her how it feels to be held up as an example of a "child star gone wrong," Lohan said, "I hate that label and that title. That's not what I ever aspired to be." — PTI

Rock & role
Jasmine Singh

There is something really interesting about music, besides working as a great stress buster, binding hearts, breaking barriers, you can actually make various combinations in music and surprisingly they all work well. Like for instance, a young boy from Delhi, Ssameer combines Punjabi folk with rock. And you bet, the results are fabulous! Rising on the music charts is his recent album Sohniye. Punjabi folk with rock, this definitely intrigues. "Like everyone else who loves music, I too make it from my heart, and the result is generally nice," shares Ssameer, who likes how Punjabi singer Amrinder Gill weaves romance with music. "I like to make songs that you can dedicate to someone, which means they should have excellent lyrics. I focus a lot on melodies that can touch the strings of the listener's heart."

Apparently Ssameer is one of the few music directors who have turned into a singer. "I did music production in Bollywood for nearly two years before I decided to sing," shares Ssameer who doesn't call it an out of the blue decision. "My friends encouraged me to sing, a talent that I found was hidden inside me."

He can play all kinds of Punjabi folk instruments, but he likes tumbi the best. "It has a lot of scope for experimentation," he says.

Ssameer has already made waves in the Punjabi music scene with his album Saiyyaan. His two music videos have been immensely popular on web and television.

If it is Punjabi rock, the name Honey Singh cannot be ruled out. "I do appreciate his music. However, my music is more like Dr Zeus of Kangana fame."

A Punjabi singer is never far away from movies. This makes Ssameer laugh. "Of course, I like to sing. As of now, this is what I want to do. Bollywood is open to Punjabi music and also to any kind of experimentation. If acting happens, you never know!"

The secret behind those pearly whites

He has charmed many women and made them go weak in their knees with his smile. But what is the secret to his pearly whites? "Brushing his teeth" is what our khabri tells us. So is Salman promoting a toothpaste brand? "NO!" our khabri was quick to respond. Apparently, at the recent shoot of Bigg Boss promos for Colors, Salman was required to be assisting in brushing his teeth by a beautiful apsara(angel) beneath a waterfall.

But, the Apsara, who was in awe of Salman, could not believe her luck that she was given the task to brush the super star's teeth that in her nervousness, she quivered every time she attempted to brush his teeth leaving toothpaste all over his mouth. Salman being the gentleman that he was, winked at her and was patient all through the shoot. This left everybody present there in splits of laughter and finally after about five to six attempts, she gained control of herself and finally gave the perfect shot with Salman heaving a sigh of relief. Not only did Salman get a set of flashy teeth, he also got drenched owing to the fact that he was standing beneath a waterfall. Watch out for this quirky promo of Bigg Boss Season 7 coming soon only on Colors.

Jhalak lost his hero tonight: Karan Johar

This week, one of the most loved hero of small screen Shiv, aka Sidharth Shukla's stint in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa came to an end. After impressing the judges and his fans alike with his hard work and sincerity, he found himself in the bottom two, along with ace dancer Mukti Mohan. From Paso Doble, to robotic and hip-hop, Shukla tried different dance styles in spite of his lack of professional knowledge about dance. After his initial choreographer, Sonia Jaffer was severely injured on the show, Mohena paired with Sidharth and as luck would have it, she brought out the best in Sidharth. He got his highest score when he did a sensuous rumba performance on Hothon pe bas tera naam hai.

From SRK to John, every star on the show was impressed by his humble attitude and charismatic personality. Manish and Kapil too never left an opportunity joke about Sidharth's physique and paired him up with his contestants. However, Despite his exit, Sidharth's day was elated when judge Remo said, "Look at you at the beginning of the show and look at you now. You truly justify the concept of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa-the concept of a celebrity non-dancer becoming a dancer!" Karan Johar added, "It seems like Jhalak lost his hero tonight."

The actor though has taken back a lot from the show. "I will always remember all the comments I have received from the judges. They are all very precious to me! I would like to thank Sonia and Mohena for their faith in me", Shukla said while leaving. Well, we will all truly miss Sidharth's presence on the dance floor! Here's wishing him all the luck.
