Thapar varsity initiates mentorship programme

Patiala, August 16
In a unique initiative to bridge the gap between seniors and freshers and to curb the menace of ragging, Thapar University, Patiala, has initiated a unique mentorship programme, where second-year students will act as mentors to new students to familiarise them with the new surroundings and to provide academic and other assistance to help them settle down.

The university is organising a Frosh Week which includes various engaging activities. Over 700 first-year B Tech and BE students are attending the 10-day event, which commenced on August 12, engaging themselves in diverse academic, sports and cultural activities. Society Fair, the highlight of Frosh Week where student members of 35 active societies put up stalls to apprise the freshers of the activities and objectives of their respective societies, received a roaring response.

To begin with the Frosh Week, Thapar University kicked off this mentorship programme under which a senior acts as a mentor to 20 freshers of the same branch for the entire year. The seniors personally stay in touch with their group of first-year students and guide them in case of any difficulty, be it academics or hostel accommodation.

Dean (Student Affairs) Dr Seema Bawa said, “The measures taken by us in the past to prevent ragging have worked, as evident from the fact that not a single case of ragging has been reported from the university in recent years but we realised that we needed to do something to build-up healthy interaction between seniors and juniors.” This mentorship programme has helped in achieving just that and more, she said.

Dr Bawa said, “The ideal equation between seniors and juniors and the way they have gelled together has gone a long way in creating a congenial atmosphere on the campus. It has been worth the effort.”

The ‘Thapar Marathon’ organised by the university on August 15 also got an overwhelming response from the freshers, who participated in the race wholeheartedly to spread the message of ‘Say no to drugs’. — TNS

Residents without water, power on I-Day

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 16
Though the entire nation was celebrating and watching the Independence Day celebrations on TV, the residents of district headquarter town Sirhind were without power and water.

Varinder Rattan, president of the District Beopar Mandal, RN Sharma, president of Citizen Welfare Council, and others said there was no power since midnight, so the water tubewells could not supply water. No one could watch the celebrations on TV nor could participate in functions as the people couldn’t bathe or dress up due to no supply of water and power.

More surprising is that no officials from PSPCL attended the calls or gave information about the restoration of power supply, though SDO and JE are local residents. The single complaint office for the entire town doesn't have any attendant and the telephone installed there is most of the times put on hold.

The residents were seen struggling to get water. — OC

Forum directs Dynamic Motors to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 16
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has penalised Dynamic Motors for selling a two-year-old model of a car to a person. The company has been directed to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the complainant for keeping the complainant in the dark.

The Kharar-based complainant had filed a complaint that he had purchased a Chevrolet Aveo (LS) car from Dynamic Motors in February 2011. After using the car for about 10 months, the complainant wished to avail the exchange offer at Dynamic Motors and took his car for sale to the latter's office.

However, he was told that car was a 2009 and the sale amount would be in accordance with the model. Dynamic Motors contended before the forum that the complainant had purchased the car knowing that it was manufactured In December 2009 and availed a discount Rs 40,000 and also got installed a USB MP3 player worth Rs 8,000 in the car.

However, after examining the annexures, the forum held that there was a sufficient evidence to prove that the opposite party (Dynamic Motors) sold a car of the model 2009 on to the complainant as 2011 model. The forum stated, "The contention of the opposite party (Dynamic Motors) that the complainant had purchased the car with a clear knowledge that the same was manufactured In December 2009 and he availed a huge discount of Rs 40,000 and also got installed a USB MP3 player worth Rs 8,000 in his vehicle cannot be accepted." Finding evidence of misinterpretation and unfair trade practice, the forum directed Dynamic Motors to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation and Rs 20,000 for litigation cost to the complainant.
