Kurali, August 12
The matter of using substandard material has come to light in the project of laying sewerage lines in the town. According to sources, normal soil in place of sand and bricks of poor quality were being used in construction of manholes.

“When the residents of the area staged a protest against the use of substandard material, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) officials, which has allotted the project to private contractors, directed to stop the work and inspected the sites today,” said the sources.

The GMADA executive engineer Ashok Virdi admitted that some lapses were found. “Today we have demolished four-five manholes,” said Virdi adding that the material used there was not up to the mark.

He said, “It was found that stone dust was being used in place of sand.”

The residents of ward number 12, where the work was in progress, alleged that normal soil was mixed in stone dust.

“The plaster which was made yesterday on the manholes was seen falling down today,” said Kartar Singh, a local SAD leader. The residents demanded a proper inquiry in the matter.

Virdi said he had already directed his staff to examine the material, which had been used in the construction of other manholes or other infrastructure under the project.

Panchkula, August 12
The Panchkula police was exposed "yet again" for helping criminals and carrying out shoddy investigation. The fact came to the light when the court mentioned that the best efforts were made by the police to help the accused in the case where renowned jewellers of Amritsar were robbed in Sector 20, Panchkula, in 2009 .

A communication has been sent to the Commissioner of Police to take action against the then Station House Officer of the Sector 20 police station, Inspector Vikas Kumar.

Several lacunae left by SHO Inspector Vikas Kumar are mentioned in a order, a copy of which is with Chandigarh Tribune. On August 1, the accused, Jagdeepak, was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for robbing two Amritsar-based jewellers after giving them the juice laced with sedatives.

"Notably, the Investigating officer who collected the glasses with juice did not sent the samples for FSL examination despite specific recommendation of the forensic expert, for reasons best known to him,” the court pointed out.

It further stated, “The test identification parade was not carried out in accordance with the rules laid down by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.”

"It is observed that Inspector Vikas did not submit the glass of juice to Forensic State Laboratory (FSL), Madhuban, for examination, for the reasons best known to him. Therefore, the copy of the judgement be sent to the Commissioner of Police to take action against him,” stated the orders.

In January 2009, Jagdeepak had called up the Amritsar-based jewellers saying that they wanted to open a showroom in Panchkula and for that purpose they wanted to buy 5 kg gold jewellery from them.
