Man held for raping daughter
Panchkula, August 10
The police today arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly raping his 19-year-old daughter. The accused, Uma Shankar, is a resident of Fatehpur village, Sector 20. The victim, who was rescued by a police team and advocates of the Legal Aid Clinic, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, alleged that she was repeatedly raped by her father.

Two-day Teej festival kicks off at Mani Majra
Chandigarh, August 10
Youths perform bhangra during Teej celebrations at Mani Majra in Chandigarh on Saturday. The two-day Teej festival, organised by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, and sponsored by The Tribune began at the Shivalik Garden, Mani Majra, today. Prerna Puri, IAS, Secretary ( IT), inaugurated the festival in presence of Subhash Chawla, Mayor, and other councillors.

Auto operators up in arms against Admn

Members of the Tricity Auto Rickshaw Union raise slogans against the UT Administration on Saturday. Perturbed at the ‘indifferent’ attitude of the Chandigarh Administration in resolving their problems, members of the Tricity Auto Rickshaw Union today announced  to stage a on a daylong dharna in Sector 17 on August 12.

Special train from city to Dibrugarh

The Railways has decided to run a special weekly express train from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh to clear the passengers’ rush.

6 cases of vehicle theft cracked
Chandigarh, August 10
The Chandigarh Police has solved six cases of vehicle theft with the arrest of two persons. The police has recovered five stolen motorcycles and a scooter from the accused. On August 5, a team of the crime branch laid a trap near Nirman Cinema in Sector 32 and apprehended 24-year-old Raju Khatri, alias Mahi, a resident of Hallo Majra, said the police.

14 lakh students register online
Mohali, August 10
With the online registration of over 14 lakh students, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) authorities claim to have achieved 100 per cent success in the recently introduced online system.

Caught red-handed by wife, man vents anger on ‘gifted’ car
Panchkula, August 10
A high drama was witnessed near Yavnika Park after a woman caught her husband roaming there with his girlfriend. The agitated wife called her parents and other relatives, following which the agitated man damaged his car, which he had received in dowry, in full public view.

Man dies in mishap 
Panchkula, August 10
A 29-year-old man died, while his wife and four-year-old daughter were seriously injured, when a speeding MUV hit them on the Pinjore road this evening. The victim, Santosh, was a resident of Rampur Seuri village situated on NH-22 in Pinjore. He along with his wife, Somwati (27), and daughter was crossing the road to visit a nearby market when the accident took place, the police said.

High-end cars to zoom through city roads today
Chandigarh, August 10
High-end cars, including Jaguar, BMW, Porsche, Range Rover, Audi and Mercedes etc will zoom through the city roads on Sunday. The Elite Supercars Club of Chandigarh in collaboration with the Chandigarh Police will organise a car rally tomorrow to spread the message on safe driving and respect for women.

‘Honeymoon’ leaves audience in splits

Oral awareness drive from tomorrow
Chandigarh, August 10
Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University (PU), will organise an oral health awareness drive on August 12 and 13. The Principal-cum-Professor of the dental Institute, Dr Ashish Jain, said an array of informative and educative events had been planned in which the students, staff and faculty would participate. "Marching Towards Sparkling Smiles" will be the theme of the two-day event.

The UT Education Department has eased norms for the purchase of winter school uniforms. The decision was taken after government schools faced problem in buying summer school uniforms due to technical specification and low price ceiling fixed by the department.

Over 500 take part in job fair
Chandigarh, August 10
More than 500 students from 25 polytechnic institutes across Punjab took part in the 11th job fair, organised by Mohali-based Universal Group of Institutions. The fair was held at at the PHD Chamber in Sector 31. As many as 115 students were shortlisted by companies.

DC recommends principal’s suspension
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 10
Deputy Commissioner, Arun Sekhri, has recommended the Education Secretary-Cum-DGSE, Anjali Bhawra, to suspend principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sirhind, alleging that the she forcibly collected various types of funds from girl students, committed irregularities, misused government funds as well as embezzling midday meal funds through self-created bills. He has recommended a detailed enquiry of all funds and severest punishment.

15-yr-old feared drowned in river
Ambala, August 10
A 15-year-old boy is feared to have drowned in a river here this morning. The victim has been identified as Vikas, a student of Sambhalkha. The divers and local administration staff have been searching for him since morning.

Recruitment drive at RIMT

A nine-member team of a company recruited 25 students from RIMT Group of Institutes, Mandi Gobindgarh, here. The selection procedure went through a four-phase process starting with the technical test. More than 500 students from different institutes participated in a joint campus placement drive.

College organises cloud computer course
Ropar, August 10
Rayat Polytechnic College organised a short-term course for its faculty on Cloud Computing in association with National Institute of Teachers Technical Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh. Prof JK Sharma, a retired Brigadier, principal of the college, said the course will enable the faculty to impart best of knowledge and expertise to the students.

Gang of thieves busted, 2 held
Panchkula, August 10 The police claimed to have busted a gang of thieves by arresting two of its members. The police has also recovered six motorcycles, valuables and jewellery worth Rs 16 lakh from the accused.
