Health insurance scheme for 30 lakh families soon: Sukhbir
Tribune News Service

Moga, August 9
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the state government would soon launch a health insurance scheme that would cover 30 lakh poor families of Punjab. “The plan will facilitate the beneficiaries in getting treatment at a government or private hospital of their choice in the state,” he said.

Talking to mediapersons after administering oath to newly elected panchayat members of the district here, he said initially, a family would get monetary medical assistance of Rs 30,000 per year. But in the years to come, he said, the government would enhance the limit.

Sukhbir said the government had reserved a sum of Rs 1,700 crore to repair and upgrade the rural link roads and the work would be completed in the next four months. “We are also working on a plan for the overall development of villages in the next three years,” he said.

When asked that hundreds of Punjabis had been killed in Philippines during the past few years and why the Punjab Government had failed to raise the issue with the Philippines Embassy in New Delhi, Sukhbir said they (state government) could not do anything in the matter. “It is a separate country and has its own law, how can we intervene,” he asked.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Department later, Sukhbir lashed out at the Congress-led UPA Government for failing the protect the Punjabis in Philippines. He said that it was a matter of great regret that with Minister of State for External Affairs being a Punjabi (Preneet Kaur), Punjabis were not safe abroad.

Earlier, Surjit Singh Rakhra, Rural Development and Panchayat Minister, and Jathedar Tota Singh, Dharamkot MLA, also addressed the sarpanches and panches. The local MP, Bibi Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, local MLAs Rajwinder Kaur, Mahesh Inder Singh, Joginder Pal Jain, former DGP Paramdeep Singh Gill and several other local leaders of the SAD and the BJP were among those present.

Barnala, August 9
In protest against the registration of a case under Section 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against a Congress worker from Chunga village, party activists today staged a dharna outside a police station at Tallewal village in the district.

Congress MP from the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency Vijay Inder Singla also took part in the protest.

The MP alleged that the police had registered a ‘false’ case against Congress worker Harnek Singh while the case should have been registered against activists and supporters of the ruling party, who entered Harnek’s house and assaulted him.

He said they gheraoed the police station for hours together. Singla said they lifted the gherao when Barnala SP (Detective) Balraj Singh Sidhu reached the Tallewal police station and assured them that they would get justice.

Sidhu said this evening he asked the protesters to give him a copy of the application, relating to their grievance, which they provided him.

He added that the police would now conduct a probe into the matter.

Fazilka August 9
A long-cherished dream of the residents of this border region to have a direct rail connectivity with the national capital realised today when the first Fazilka-Delhi Intercity Express chugged off at the railway station here at 2 am on Friday.

Cutting across the party lines, traditional political rivals Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya and senior Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar flagged off the train in the presence of assistant divisional railway manager, Ferozepur Division, Mahavir Singh, senior commercial manager Jeet Singh and hundreds of local residents who gathered under the banner of the Northern Railway Passengers' Samiti.

The Intercity Express has been started on daily basis. The train was announced in the previous Railways budget by the then Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The train number 14732 would leave Fazilka at 2 am and reach Delhi at 12.45 pm via Muktsar, Kotkapura, Bathinda, Patiala, Rajpura, Ambala, Panipat, Karnal and Sonepat. On its return journey, the train (14731) would start from Delhi at 1.45 pm and reach Fazilka at 1.05 am.

"Although the train takes a long route to reach Delhi, it would serve residents of a large area in Punjab and Haryana in travelling to Delhi," said Dr Amar Lal Baghla, president of the Samiti. Notably, Fazilka and holy Muktsar districts were deprived of a direct rail link to Delhi and had been demanding introduction of the train since decades.
