Rice millers urge govt to withdraw tax notices

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 8
The Punjab Rice Millers' Association has urged the state government to direct the Excise and Taxation Department not to impose the Punjab (institutions and other buildings) Tax Act, 2011, on rice mills. They have requested the government to withdraw notices concerning the institutional tax.

Nakesh Jindal, press secretary of the association, said that per clause 2(c) of the act, the tax was not applicable on the godowns for storage of wheat, paddy or rice of the state govt. He said the rice millers of Punjab fell under the exempted category as per clause 2 (c) of the act as rice mill premises were being used by the government and its procuring agencies for the storage of rice. Moreover, maintenance and custody charges on this account are being claimed by the state agencies from the Government of India.

He said the Excise and Taxation Department has started issuing notices to rice millers to deposit
the tax.

Protest against Pak held

Ambala, August 8
The youth wing of the BJP and the Rajpoot Youth Brigade burnt the flag of Pakistan at Ambala City today. They were protesting against the killing of the Indian soldiers at Poonch. The youth workers raised slogans against the Pakistan government and condemned the attack on the Indian troops. 

Jitender Rana, president of the Rajpoot Youth Brigade, said the uniongovernment should lodge strong protest with the Pakistan government on this issue and should take a tough stance.

Man convicted of murder 

Panchkula, August 8
Local court today convicted Vir Pal, a resident of Rajiv Colony, in murder case of a woman with whom he had illicit relations.

Panchkula Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi held Vir Pal, a vegetable vendor, guilty of murder of a 45-year-old woman, Gangvati, also a vegetable vendor.

The accused had set the victim on fire after Gangvati started threatening him that she would disclose their relation to his wife. In her dying declaration, the victim, who had received 90 per cent burns, had taken the name of Vir Pal as an accused. The case is dated back on October 8, 2011. —TNS

1 held with banned cough syrup

Chandigarh, August 8
The UT police today arrested a person for carrying 44 bottles (100ml) of banned cough syrup. The police arrested Ajay of New Delhi near the entry gate of Inter State Bus Terminus, Sector 43, on August 7.

The police said they saw Ajay roaming outside the bus stand with a bag and rounded him up on suspicion. They questioned Ajay, who failed to give a satisfactory reply. When the police searched the bag they found 44 bottles of Rexcof, a banned cough syrup, were recovered. A case under Section 22 of NDPS Act has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Police sources said they were investigating as to why he was carrying so many cough syrup bottles in his bag and to whom he was supposed to supply.

Police clueless

A day after the incident in which Rs 1.45 lakh was snatched from an employee of a LPG agency, the police has not been able to trace the accused.

Mohan, an employee with Sabharwal Gas Agency, had reached the agency’s office in Sector 47 last evening with cash collections for the day when a masked youth, who was chasing him, fled after snatching the bag containing the cash. The masked youth escaped on a motorcycle with his accomplice.

Inspector Kirpal Singh, SHO, Sector 31 police station, said efforts were being made to trace the accused. A case was registered at the Sector 31 police station. —TNS

St Stephen’s boys bend it like Beckham

The Soccer team of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, won the Inter-School Football Championship for Boys (U-17), held at Government Model Senior School, Sector 22. In the final match of the championship, the winning side posted a 3-0 victory over the runners-up team of DAV Public School, Sector 8, here today.

Putting pressure from the very first minute, the winning side took over the possession of ball and posted the first goal in the 12th minute. Striker Pankaj successfully trapped the ball and surged ahead towards rival’s goal area before scoring the lead. The team played equally well throughout the entire half and sealed the first 35 minutes in their favour.

After the lemon break, the DAV side tried hard to come back. But in their campaign to level the score, they started losing their temper. Taking full advantage of the situation, half back Nikhil Verma doubled the lead for St Stephen's in the 42nd minute. As the match approached the final whistle, Bipinjot scored the third goal, in the 51st minute, to seal the team’s win at 3-0.

In another match, St John’s School, Sector 26, defeated Delhi Public School, Sector 40, (DPS-40), to attain third place in the tournament.

For the winning side, Robinderjeet scored the first in the 17th minute while Harshiv Chhabra levelled the score in the 20th minute. Karan Cheema scored again for St John’s by scoring a brace in the 39th minute but the joy was reduced after Dhruv put DPS again at level in the 41st minute. But it was Karan who stole the show in the extra time with his successful volley pack shot in the 80th minute. He ensured his team’s win by scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes.

The softball team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, (GMSSS-10) defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, 11-2, in a match of the ongoing Inter-School Competition for Boys (U-14), held here today. In another match of the same category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, beat AKSIPS, Sector 41, by 11-1.

Two-month golf camp from Sept 7

The Chandigarh Golf Club will conduct a two-month long weekend Junior Golf Training Programme from September 7 to October 27.

The programme will be organised for children in the age-group of 6 to 15 years. The programme will be conducted in a form of 16 coaching days on every Saturday and Sunday (4 to 5 pm). The programme will focus on the fundamentals of the golf game including basic swing technique, short game instruction and integration of the core values. The interested golfers can contact coach Ajay Gujral (9814356013) to confirm their registration on first-come-first-serve basis.

City girl wins laurels in golf

An eighty-year-old golfer, Hunar Mittal, has brought laurels by finishing 18th out of 40 children in the recently concluded US Kids Golf World Championship, held in Pinehurst, North Carolina (USA).

A student of Class III, Strawberry Fields World School, Sector 26, Hunar has also received a wild card entry to represent India again in the US Kids Golf World Championship for the 2014. In the recently concluded tourney, she scored 12 over one first day and ended her next day on the score 4 over. On Day III, she ended her campaign with the score of 6 over.

Hunar has been playing golf since she was five under the supervision of her coach, Mahesh Kumar, at the greens of Chandigarh Golf Club and Panchkula Golf Club.

After her recent feat, Hunar is working on her physical fitness and psychological training.

“I am thankful to my coach for giving intensive and rigorous training that helped me win laurels at international level competitions,” said Hunar Mittal.
