Tennis Championship
Gayatri steers into semis

Chandigarh, July 24
Top seed Gayatri Kumraiah stormed into the semifinal of the girls (U-18) category, during the ongoing CLTA-AITA Talent Series Tennis tournament today. In the quarterfinal, she defeated Shivangi Sharma in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0. In the boys' (U-14) quarterfinals Calvin Golmei defeated Lakshay Gupta 6-4 and 6-3 whereas Gurjot Singh beat Anmol Rattan Kamboj 6-0 and 6-2.

In other quarterfinal matches of the doubles category for boys' (U-14) category, the pair of Sabrang Sandal and Rishabh Sharda routed Savneet Singh and Dhruv Sharma 4-0 and 4-0. In the girls (U-18) category, Bhavya Wadhawan and Aarushi Kakkar beat Shivangi Sharma and Aishwarya 4-0 and 4-2 whereas Nandini and Simran Pritam trounced Priyam Kumari and Sofia Khan 4-0 and 4-0.

Football Championship
Saupin’s-32 script victory

Chandigarh, July 24
The soccer team of Saupin's Public School, Sector 32, defeated Government Model High School (GMHS), Manimajra, 7-0, in Inter-School Football Championship for boys (U-17), held at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, today.

Aryaman and Angad scored two goals each to endure team's win. Earlier, in the 4th minute, Piyush opened the account for his team while Jashanpreet doubled the lead in the 7th minute. Kanwar scored the third goal in the 15th minute to seal the first half at 3-0. Later in second half, Angad and Aryaman scored two goals each.

In the second match, the Mount Carmel School outplayed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, 4-0. Piyush Rawat's three strikes put the team ahead while Madhan added a flavor in the team's win.

In the third match, Ashiana Public School, Sector 46, defeated Government High School, Sector 38. The match ended in a draw.

In another tie-breaker end, the team of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, defeated the Tribune Model School, Sector 29, 3-2. Rishab, Pankaj and Rinreithan Shaiza scored a goal each while Tarun and Param scored for the losing side.

In the matches played at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, Government High School, Sector 24, defeated St Marry School, Sector 46, 3-1. Ashish Kumar scored a hat-trick for the wining side in 14th, 17th and 39th minute of the match while Akash reduced the margin for the losing side in the 12th minute. St John's School, Sector
26, defeated Ryan International School, Sector 49, 4-1. For wining side, Samarth, Akhil and Karan scripted team's win while Rizul scored the lone goal in the 46th minute.

Vivek High School defeated Kundan International School, Sector 46, 4-0 with Mohit scoring three goals )and Gursimran contributing one. In the last match, the S.F.W.S - 26 beat K.B.D.A.V - 7, 4-0, Ayush, Ekam and Sugame initiated the team's win.

Basketball Championship
NPS beat DAV Public School

Chandigarh, July 24
In the Col Balraj Sub-Junior State Basketball Championship, the host team of New Public School (NPS), Sector 18, defeated DAV Public School in the boys’ category 42-3 today.

Devang (14 points) and Navjot(12 points) were the main scorers for the winning side. From DAV Public School, Guresh gathered all the points.

In the second match, Vivek High School, Sector 38, defeated Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, 34-32. Kanav and Aaman from Vivek High School headed 6 baskets each while Suvan gathered 4 points. Pratikshit (26 points) and Moises (4 points) were the scorers for the losing side.

In the girls’ category, St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, beat Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, by 18-14 with Simran (9 points) and Jasmine(6 points) contributing the lion’s share. For losing side, Palak (8 points) and Akalsimer (4points) reduced the margin.

In the last match, Strawberry World School defeated Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, 49-23. Somya (10 points) and Tarini(2 points) were the main points gatherers while Rajni (17 points) and Shivani (3 points) collected points for the losing side.

Inter-District tourney
Karan stars in city team’s win

Chandigarh, July 24
The city team defeated Yamunanagar district cricket team in the first match of the Inter-District Cricket Tournament for boys (U-25) held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, today.

Winning the toss, the visitors opted to field first and restricted the local side on 192 in 37 overs. The city team registered a 68 run win over the rivals with bowler Karan claiming 5 wickets and batsman Guntashveer Singh scoring 69 runs and four sixes. Jeetender Kumar scored 42 runs, including six boundaries, off 58 balls while Prince claimed 3 for 22 runs while Ajay Kumar and Anurag claimed two wickets each.

Chasing the target, the visitors managed to score 124 runs in 30.5 overs.

Brief Scores:

Chandigarh: 192 for all out in 37 overs (Guntashveer Singh 69, Jeetender Kumar 42, Navdeep Boora 26, Prince 3 for 22 runs, Ajay Kumar 2 for 32 runs, Anurag 2 for 38 runs).

Yamunanagar: 124 for all out in 30.5 overs (Vaibav 33, Gaurav 19, Ajay 15, Karan 5 for 25, Sandeep Bhattachyra 2 for 27).

Cricket Tournament
Mount Carmel win easy

The cricket team of Mount Carmel School defeated Royal Cricket Academy by 5 wickets during a match of the ongoing 4th Cricket Tournament for Vivek Trophy today. The matches are being played under the boys' (U-14) category.

While batting first, Royal Cricket Academy mustered up 93 runs in 20 overs. Raahat (25) and Aditya (18) were the main scorers for the team. For the bowling side, Dhananjay claimed 3 wickets for 9 runs whereas Prithvi took 2 for 14 runs.

In reply, the Mount Carmel side achieved the target with the loss of 5 wickets in 14.2 overs. Divya Gajraaj played an unbeaten knock of 39 runs. He remained not out. Sarab Sachdeva contributed 19 runs in the team’s total. Karan claimed 2 for 15 while Vaibhav bagged 2 for 17 for Royals. Divya Gajraaj was declared man of the match.

Chess meet from July 27

Chandigarh, July 24
Chandigarh Chess Association will organise Boys (U-15 and U-9) Open and Girls Chess Championship at the St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here. The tournament will be held from July 27 to 28.

According to organisers, four boys and four girls in the Under-15 years category, two boys and two girls in Under-9 years category, will be selected to represent Chandigarh in the nationals to be held in Kolkata, West Bengal (Under-15) from August 5 to 14 and Chennai (Under-9) from November 8 to 17.
