Couture charisma
Even though it was couture that ignited the fashion movement across India, it's a bit appalling that a subsequent fashion week dedicated to the crafts came much later than those celebrating prêt. Now when the two major couture weeks, India Bridal Fashion Week and Delhi Couture Week, are all set to enter the fourth edition, the rich couture of India is getting its due. This edition of IBW will be attended by all the big names from the industry, from Suneet Varma, JJ Valaya, Tarun Tahiliani, Ashima Leena, Shane to Falguni and they will all showcase their opulent collections.
Another significant change is that this time, the venue of the week has been shifted from Mumbai to Delhi. Vijay Singh, MD of Fashion One International, the organiser of the event cites the reason, "Delhi is the fashion capital of India, especially when it comes to bridal couture. The fashion week will help establish a direct link between the designers and consumers, something that is not as important in the case of prêt." The bifurcation of couture — bridal couture and ready-to-wear couture — in the last few years has further given an impetus to the segment. So, while master of the craft Suneet Varma has made a line of bridal lehangas, he has also included in his ensemble Spartan couture pieces. Titled Pompeii, the collection is inspired by Roman architecture and will thus offer interesting silhouettes. Says Varma, "I have extensively worked with drapes and focused less on embroidery, and the silhouette is largely off shoulder. The accessories are hand-crafted and done in gold." The colour palette is earthy and in tones of blue, right from cobalt to deep shades of it. The fashion week will also witness designers who will be making a comeback on the ramp after a hiatus - be it the promoter of Jodhpuris, Raghavendra Rathore or West-bound designer duo, Falguni and Shane Peacock. Says Falguni about her comeback after five years, "Our prêt lines are reserved for the international fashion shows but couture is what sells the best in India." As the name suggests, their collection, The Garden of Eden, will be dominated by a lot of floral prints and embroidery. Since the collection primarily targets clientele in Northern India, Delhi and Punjab in particular, a lot of emphasis has been laid on bling. "As against Mumbai, people in this part of the country like to wear glamorous clothes and we have it all." The silhouettes are mostly Western, with gowns in focus. The duo has played with the classic combination of red and beige, and also soft pinks. Tone-on-tone colour palette is also evident in their creations. In his couture collection, Raghavendra Rathore will celebrate the glory of Indian royalty and heritage. Motifs have been picked up from the designs that were popular in 1920's but a contemporary treatment has been given to these. "I have used shades of fuschia, midnight blue, wine, saffron…which have been colours of celebration in India for long," says the designer about his collection. How elegant and opulent it must have come out on chiffons as well as velvets can be well-imagined. It will be interesting to watch what trends get triggered for the upcoming wedding season post the week. ashima@tribunemail.com

A story in strokes
There is nothing better than a quiet summer evening with an artist, just flowing in his stream of thoughts and strokes of the brush. Here’s an account of one such tete-a-tete with S Raj Kumar, a city-based artist who has recently been honoured with the Amrita Sher-Gil Samman Award by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi. “Since my father was in the Railways, we were never stationed at one particular place for a long time,” says Raj Kumar. The artist spent his childhood in a village near Gurdaspur. “My mother would often tell me about an uncle who was very good at art. In time, I learnt that he designed the ropes of the charpais. Now that reveals the knowledge of art that my folks had! So, it took me a little long to pursue my interest,” he shares. Having moved to Jagraon while still in school, he would often keenly observe the signboards and film posters in utter awe. “It triggered my interest in painting. Later, when I was in Class 9, I took a liking to the paintings on the trolleys, but the actual realisation of my talent came during an interschool teacher-student painting competition, where I received the first prize while my teacher stood second,” he shares. “In 1970, my father was beginning to get a little weary about my future and because my elder brother took to engineering, I took up medical, but all my academic attempts went in vain. Later, my teacher, who won the second prize in the competition, intimated my father about my artistic pursuits,” he adds. And the rest is, as they say, history. “It was then that he asked me to enroll in the Government College of Arts, Chandigarh,” he recollects while adding, “I remember when I had gone to give the entrance exam which requires you to paint something, I did not even have a big drawing board. It was a friend of mine from Ludhiana who arranged for the board.” In 1976, when S Raj Kumar joined the Education Department as an artist (where he remained till he retired), he met one of the famous writers of Punjab, Mohan Bhandari and his influence seeped into his work. “After meeting him, I realised that a painting was but a visual form of a story. I started thinking with the perspective of a writer and each of my paintings told a story,” he shares. Kumar has exhibited his work in many group shows, including All-India Exhibition, Shimla, 1983, Punjab Lalit Kala Exhibitions (1996, 1997 & 1998), among others. amarjot@tribunemail.com |
Identity issues
Hues of my identity is an apt nomenclature that artist Jasbir Bhogal has given to her collection of art pieces, which she exhibited at the Sutlej club, Ludhiana, recently. Drawing purely on the reserves of her instinct, Jasbir has endeavoured to be very realistic and expressive in her works. Painting since school days, Jasbir got a little formal training from IFA Chandigarh but
as she affirms, “Formal training did not suit me much; I wanted to bring out real-life experiences on the canvas
and something with which the viewer could identify.”
Painting mostly in the 16th century Baroque style, this winsome young artist goes a step forward and gives a brief description with each painting besides the title. One painting titled And life moves on, “Depicts the character of a writer who lies down after
finishing one chapter and the two cups on the table denote a mystery as to whether she has got guests or is expecting them. In her unique style, Jasbir assimilates the Feng Shui colour therapy into her work so that they
all emanate positive vibes. Her work, being highly original, won the appreciation of many artists besides other viewers. Her words, “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation,” explains the character of the artist who goes purely by instinct.

Excellence Jesse Grewal The position of the body in relation to the ball at impact has a direct effect on the angle of approach of the club. This affects the quality of contact with the ball. If the centre of your body (the sternum) is ahead of the ball the club would approach the ball on a steep plane and the divot would tend to be deep and ahead of the ball. If the body falls back with the centre being well behind the ball the club would approach on a very shallow plane and would tend to hit the ground behind the ball or would not hit the ground at all, which means that there would be either a thin divot slightly behind the ball or no divot. In an ideal address position, the sternum is slightly behind the ball and the upper body is inclined a little away from the target. During the backswing the hips should turn away from the ball without any lateral movement. This could be checked in a mirror by placing two shafts on either side of your feet (picture 1). From the top of the backswing the hips should initiate the downswing by turning towards the target within a line drawn through the lead ankle (picture 2). If the hips move laterally on the backswing the player is swaying (picture 3) and if they move laterally on the forward swing it is termed. An incorrect body action could be just a bad habit created out of an incorrect notion of the golf swing or out of compulsion. The former could be simply an incorrect understanding of the meaning of 'weight shift'. A lateral action like a sway or a slide can be created because the player is deliberately trying to shift their weight. The correct action is a rotation of the body away from the target on the backswing and towards the target on the forward swing without a lateral movement somewhat like a discuss throw. In the latter case it could be a reaction to the rest of the swing. When a player has a swing plane coming from out to in or over the top, the club would be coming too steep and the player may fall back to prevent a deep divot. The opposite is when a player's swing is approaching the ball from inside the club would be coming from a shallow plane and the player would tend to move forward to create a divot. This could be analyzed through a video recording of the swing. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

Talk Sleeping one night with cosmetics can make your skin age by 7-8 days Dr Vikas Sharma The make-up is something which can make one look beautiful. While this is a routine for women it is becoming popular among men too. Countless brands are available in the market, each one of them claiming to be the best. The fact, however, remains that you need to have a little understanding of your skin type to know which brand deserves to be on your dressing table. The truth is if used the right way, cosmetic products can make you look beautiful but if used in the wrong way, the effect can be pretty much devastating. The good Some people feel confident and happy when they wear makeup. Some benefits of wearing makeup are that it helps to hide blemishes and other flaws on their face. Also, it helps highlight facial features which otherwise would not be as defined without makeup like in case of eyeliner which can bring out the eyes. Makeup could possibly promote good posture. The bad & ugly Wearing make-up everyday can cause serious skin problems. Most of the cosmetics available in the market contain chemicals, colours, additives and preservatives and some of them are even toxic. For instance, lipsticks contain dangerous ingredients, including lead. Similarly there are equally harmful chemical compounds in blushers, powders, eye shadows, foundation and more. A layer of make-up on the skin clogs the pores and prevents skin from breathing. Always check the ingredients of products and their expiry date. Make-up should be worn lightly and occasionally and removed before retiring for the day. Make-up can cause irritated or dry skin making it prone to skin infections. Applying out of date make-up, or make-up shared among others, can cause bacteria build-ups and infections. Mascara can be a breeding ground for bacteria, so it's not surprising that that nearly half of women suffer from itchy, watery and red eyes when they're holding onto their make-up for so long and sharing it among friends. It has been scientifically proved that sleeping one night with cosmetics can make your skin age 7-8 days. So, always make sure that you remove cosmetics from your skin before you go to sleep. Use a good cleanser and wash your face later on. Mascara can cause bloodshot, irritated eyes if not removed at night. Apart from that, cheap mascara might cost you less, but end up taking away your eye-lashes. Care also needs to be taken while you are using hair products. Never use cosmetics products which can endanger your hair health. Some hairsprays even contain aerosol which can catch fire if precautionary steps are not taken. Too much usage of make-up and without checking the ingredients, the preservatives used can lead to skin disorders like Berloque dermatitis and Riehl's melanosis. These skin disorders are characterised by appearance of dark brown patches on the skin with minimal erythema. The other disorders caused by inappropriate usage of these products include acne cosmetica, hair loss, loss of eyelashes and eyebrow hair, Perioral dermatitis characterised by acne like lesions around the mouth. So, balance is the key when it comes to makeup! Checking the ingredients, using them according to the skin type and for a proper time duration are esential. Hot & sweet
How many times have you gone to an eating joint expecting something great, and it has actually turned out to be far better than your 'great' expectations? How many times have you picked up a never-tried-before dish on the menu, and you asked yourself why you didn't try this all this while. Carrying these thoughts, stepping up the elevator, you reach the farthest corner of the third floor at Elante Mall. Monica's, this is the name you are looking for. Instead, it is Monica’s Kitchen & Kaffe is what you find yourself gazing at. But it is the familiar face that puts all things at rest. Monica of the famous Monica's Pudding & Pies greets you to her newly-opened eating joint. This is where the expectations meet the far more than expected…
Neat & crisp The first thing that you notice is long white wall stretching to eternity. It is packed between two grey walls done in rough bricks. Apart from two three artistic plates you see nothing else on the walls. Neat and crisp, no frills, nothing that hits you on the face! "This is quite like how I wanted," says Monica following our eye movement. As we go ahead, soaking everything, a pretty looking girl joins us. Gayatri Sood, Monica's daughter who has returned from Paris as a certified pastry chef, joins her mother in the enterprise. And you bet the young girl has added quite a lot of sweetness to the place with her French desserts. Kitchen & Kaffe utilises space to its best. You share your little secrets with your friends while sipping banana and ginger shake without being heard. The place has two counters, one for the French desserts and the other one which has Monica's signature cakes, but with a vivid touch of fusion. It is, however, the two tried tree branches, one on the entrance and other at the back that take away all the attention. "I had perceived this place with my eyes closed. I wanted something like a dried branch and I got one," Monica shows us proudly. She has worked together with the architect to give her dream this shape. Dig in We expected a lot of cakes, sandwiches…the place sure has these and lot more. The menu gives you a good feeling, a feeling of a new start. Starting from soups, which falls under the soup of the day, salads, hay stack (Rs 225), which has fresh garden veggies with corn and cheddar topped with ranch dressing, fresh buffalo mozzarella salad (Rs 235) that offers crisp lettuce with roasted bell peppers and pomegranate with passion dressing and much more. There are salads that can be fun like the smoked chicken red wine salad (Rs 275) served warm, smoked chicken, sundried tomato, olives and topped with balsamic red wine reduction, on top of assorted lettuce or kelaguen (Rs 225/265) which is a crisp lettuce, roasted coconut with spicy coconut dressing. The appetisers go from twin brochettes (Rs 225), cheese mushroom caps (Rs 225), wasabi strips (Rs 245/265) which is herb and corn crusted crisply fried cottage cheese or chicken fritters with wasabi dip to hummus bi lamb (Rs 285) which is Arabic lamb specialty served with hummus and pita to as interesting as meze platter (Rs 275/315), an ideal sharing combination of three cold and three hot mezzes, Arabic salad, pickles and pita. The wraps and sandwiches have Bombay sandwich (Rs 275) a desi take on sandwich straight from the streets of Mumbai, spiced potato, red onion, tomato and liberal mint spread and grilled sausage and wasabi sandwich (Rs 315). It just gets better with burgers, Mediterranean veggie burger (Rs 275), steak burger 315, Panko fried chicken burger (Rs 315) or the New York hot dog (Rs 325). Curries are something Monica is gung ho about and the meals definitely carry the favourites. Vegetable moussaka (Rs 295), black pepper chicken (Rs 365), baked chicken basilica (Rs 365), grilled fish (Rs 435), Thai curry (Rs 315/345), Malabari fish curry (Rs 425), rendang curry (Rs 345) spicy coconut and brown onion curry, served with white and wild rice are some meals you can enjoy. Sweet take This is the section Gayatri takes care of. The new offerings are the French desserts, which she makes with precision. "We offer something which is totally new to Chandigrah--macaroons, mogdar, opera and frangipani pie. We also offer different flavoured tart like combination of passion fruit and chocolate," says Gayatri. "We will soon be opening a hi-tea section with all kinds of tea very soon," adds Monica.

Italian delight
If you have a different kind of evening on your mind, fresh taste, some country music and wonderful hospitality, then head to savour Peidmontese cuisine at Oregano at JW Marriott, Chandigarh, where Chef Daniele Trivero prepares an elaborate menu with as many as eight starters, bigger main course and delectable desserts.
Newly-appointed with Marriott Delhi, Chef Daniele was in Paris for five years cooking French cuisine. At Oregano, he brings out flavours of the region Peidmontese, north of Italy, for Chandigarh folks! Biella is this chef's hometown, known for some three hundred varieties of soft and hard cheese it produces and also an important wool processing and textile centre. Cheesy, non-spicy, loads of vegetables mark the delicacies of this region. For starters, we recommend vegetarians to go for Sformatino di porri (leek pudding, raw and cooked vegetable) and non-vegetarians must try Bianco di galletto bollito (poached chicken breast with micro green, watercress). The latter dish authentically uses rabbit meat, but to adapt to Indian palate, Chef Daniele uses chicken breast. Gnocchi di zucca is pumpkin gnocchi-cheesy, with a hint of spice. Pizza quattro formaggi has four cheeses provolone, parmesan, gorgonzola and fontina that lend its salty flavour. Pizza, pasta, risotto - there is variety of dishes to choose from. While Dolci (dessert) offers as many as five options, Pesche ripiene agli amaretti, peaches stuffed with amaretti and almond sauce is what we loved. "This is what I learnt from my father," says the chef. Once the food is on the table, Chef Antonello and Chef Daniele pick up the guitar and treat you to their traditional music. Making people savour tastes from his country, Chef Daniele is enjoying his India stint. "Change is what I like," says the chef who loves dal makhani and chicken tikka masala in white sauce. Peidmontese Food Festival is on every night till July 30. A meal for two will cost between Rs 350 and Rs 1500. mona@tribunemail.com

Kat loses out to DP
Deepika Padukone has done it again! Katrina Kaif may have Ranbir Kapoor as her boyfriend who takes her to Ibiza, luxurious dinners and buys her baubles but it is his former flame Deepika Padukone who gets to romance him on screen once again after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
Deepika has been signed on as the leading lady for Imtiaz Ali's next film with Ranbir Kapoor which will be produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Katrina wanted to bag this role just the way she wanted to bag Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani but DP managed to get it instead. DP anyway has a great equation with Imtiaz Ali who she worked with in
Love Aaj Kal and who gave her life-changing role in Cocktail to her as he is the writer of the movie. They are friends too and Imtiaz is great friends with Ranbir as well. Katrina was not able to get him to warm up to her. Deepika is now an actress to reckon with post Cocktail and Imtiaz is sure to extract wining performances and chemistry from both Ranbir and
Deepika. Katrina is still not considered an actress. Her charm lies in her sex appeal, smile, and charisma along with her luck. But now Deepika is nowhere behind her as she has had two blockbusters this year already with Race 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Sources say that Ranbir is such a saleable star today that his presence in a movie draws 60 per cent of the audiences. Even a newcomer can easily be launched opposite him because people will come to see the movie for him. Deepika looks better with him as Katrina looks a bit mature in front of him. So while Katrina has him in her arms in real life, Deepika gets to romance him on screen.
Clinching the title
Emraan Hashmi's next film had a title problem. The producer UTV Motion Pictures and director Kunal Deshmukh had zeroed down on the title Shaatir for this thriller. However, when they checked to register this, they realised that Shaatir belonged to Ashtavinayak. This was a huge cause of concern for the makers. Incidentally, when UTV officials met Rohit Shetty for a casual meeting since the two are working on Chennai Express, this topic somehow came up. Rohit, who has had an exceptional
relationship with Ashtavinayak having made the super-hit Golmaal series with them, agreed to speak to Ashtavinayak and suddenly things fell in place. One call from Rohit ensured that Emraan Hashmi got his title and the makers were thrilled and grateful to Rohit for helping the situation.
Manish Hariprasad, creative director, Disney-UTV confirms, "For the Kunal Deshmukh film starring Emraan Hashmi, UTV wanted the title Shaatir. But the same title was registered by Ashtavinayak. We mentioned it to Rohit
Shetty. Rohit was extremely helpful, he immediately spoke to Ashtavinayak and helped us get the title from them."
When Rob met Riley
Actor Robert Pattinson has reportedly hit it off with actress-model Riley Keough.
The two have been trying to keep their relationship under wraps. Pattinson, 27, who recently ended an on-and-off relationship with Kristen Stewart, is enjoying getting to know Elvis Presley's granddaughter. "Rob and Riley are having a really great time together, even though it's very early. There is an attraction to each other.” a source said. "Rob thinks Riley has a cool, level headed and is not impressed by stardom at all. Rob just loves that about her," the source added. The couple also enjoy spending time at Pattinson's house and are involved in doing typical stuff. "He loves that she'll go into his kitchen for like 10 minutes and come back with a delicious plate of pasta. They get into debates about politics, human rights. "She's pretty good on the piano and he'll often pull out his guitar and they'll have a mini jam session,” said the

Of flings and fits
Superstar Will Smith is reportedly upset with his daughter Willow Smith over her new single, Summer Fling, in which she sings about midnight walks on the beach and walks around with boys who look much older than her.
Will is also said to be angry at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith who gave the project the green light. "He's fit to be tied. He almost had a heart attack the first time he saw the video. Will lashed out at Jada, saying, 'How could you let my little baby do this?' Will is very traditional and worries that his kids are growing up too fast," a source said. Will, 44, and Jada, 41, have been married for 15 years, but an insider says the union has been rocked by recurring disagreements over what's appropriate for their kids.

Taylor Swift in love again?
Singer Taylor Swift is reportedly dating actor Matthew Gray Gubler.
Gray Guble is known for playing criminal profiler Spencer Reid on TV show Criminal Mind. Gubler was a special guest at Taylor’s bash in Rhode Island on July 4, but she was apparently trying to keep the romance under wraps. She posted photographs from the party on her blog that showed her backup dancers, but Matthew’s picture was conspicuously absent. It was as if Taylor was purposefully trying to keep his presence there on the down low. Taylor’s trying to keep the whole relationship with Matthew secret for now,” the source added. Some of the Swift's past love interests include singer Joe Jonas, actor Taylor Lautner and One Direction singer Harry Styles. — IANS

Ice-cream spree!
Actors always need to work hard and stay fit to look good on the screen, but sometimes they just let go off their diet plans and relish some sweet delights. This is exactly what happened recently with the beautiful Soumya Seth, who got the chance of a lifetime to slurp down ice-creams for a sequence of her show Dil Ki Nazar Se…
Khoobsurat. We hear that the actress gulped down ten ice-creams for a shot, which actually required her onscreen son Ehsaas to have them instead.
Our source reveals, "During the shoot of an upcoming sequence on the show, Aaradhya (Soumya) will go to pick up Ehsaas from his school. On the way, Ehsaas sees an ice-cream parlour and asks his mother for an ice-cream treat. But what exactly happened was that the ice-creams were more relished by the young mother than her son for real." This sudden urge to gulp down ice creams created a problem as Soumya couldn't deliver her dialogues properly. The show went off air on July 19 and cashed-on some happy moments in its last few episodes.
Manav’s a busy man
After a hiatus of almost four years, Manav Gohil returned to acting. Since last year he has been busy with back-to-back projects, including a Gujarati film Saptapadii and television show The Buddy Project on Channel V as also a tele-film.
What is the tele-film about? I will be essaying the role of a smuggler, a member of an underworld gang during the eighties, in the third Mahamovie of Savdhan India on Life OK. It has been produced by Saregama. I had fun shooting. Have you ever played a negative role before this? No. Playing the part of the flamboyant gangster is a huge departure from the other characters played by me. Apart from the mannerism and feel of the character, action and stunts were also part of the deal. Is doing your own stunts risky and painful? Yes. Not only was it exhausting, but I also ended up pulling a few muscles and with a few bruises on my thigh because of the rim of the tyres, despite it being cushioned with pillows. Moreover, since the maximum period an average man can remain upside down is about two minutes I had to keep coming down frequently. The scene was tough but the entire team of Saregama productions, especially the director Puneet Gandhi and the DOP Shrini, were very supportive; they ensured that the discomfort was minimum. Why do a tele-film? Why not? It's a challenging project. The tele-film also gave me an opportunity to bond with Gauri Nigudkar, an old friend with whom I was working after a long time. Overall, the experience was very enriching and I look forward to working with the team again. It's been an eventful year for
you, right? Yes, it has. I recently shot continuously for 48 hours for two projects without sleep. Moreover, after the success of Saptapadii, I have signed for a second film by the makers and it is slated to go on the
floors soon.

The wedding sequence
The future of Jodha Akbar on Zee TV is uncertain at the moment with the members of Akhil Bhartiya Kshtriya Mahasabha protesting against the show for hurting the sentiments of Rajputs. Industry sources have even hinted that in wake of the current agitation, Zee authorities might think of pulling the plug off the project. However, we cannot confirm the development yet. Meanwhile, there is a lot going on off the sets as the cast and crew are continuing with their regular shoot. In fact, they are currently preparing for Jodha (Paridhi Sharma) and Akbar's (Rajat Tokas) wedding sequence. A source said: "Jodha will agree to marry. She will think that she is marrying a Rajput and will have no idea that her groom is none other than Mughal King,
Akbar." |
