Help is just a call away with Gumrah Season 3 launching VithU phone app. All you have to do is press the panic button
Jasmine Singh

These are the two things, which do not make a hue and cry about their arrival, they simply slither their way through—danger and crime. Both are so beautifully co-related that you need a strong intuition to handle them, or you can let technology make things easier for you.

Channel V's unique Gumrah 'VithU' phone app promises to deal with danger and crime affectively. Chitrangda Singh will endorse the show and its unique phone app. The host of the show Karan Kundra who has taken the audiences through the hard-hitting cases for the two seasons have all the reason to put his faith in VithU phone app.

Just for you

Her dusky looks and smouldering eyes have won many hearts. Bollywood actor Chitrangda Singh makes her television debut with Gumrah Season 3, and the beauty believes in saying no to what is wrong, and yes to what is right. It is the Channel V's VithU phone app that she zeroes in on as the right thing.

"As youngsters we all went friends' place for a sleepover and we encountered some untoward incidents. I wish this application was there at that time to avoid such situations," shares Chitrangda.

Gumrah Season 3 will be anchored by Karan Kundra and is being endorsed by Bollywood star Chitrangda Singh. She has already narrated the first episode on July 7. "The unique phone app VithU for android phone users is amazing. It features a 'panic button' that can be used in the face of danger. I will be using it myself," she adds.

It's pouring offers for the beauty, but she would rather let the producers talk about it. "I have a lot of offers and you will definitely see a lot of me. I think it is only wise on my part to let the producers talk about my movies." Television is a big platform for Bollywood stars and Chitrangda is aware of the fact. "TV is quite a big medium for reaching out to the common man. Shows like Gumrah make the society sit up and notice where we need to change ourselves." She has a quick piece of advice for the women, "Don't think you face danger from strangers, even someone close to you can harm you. Just be alert," adds Chitrangda.

He is back

Karan Kundra comes back as the host for the third season of Gumrah. Of course, he has choices and a lot of work in films; this is however one platform he will always have time for. "Hosting Gumrah has changed me as a person, I am more sensitive to the people around and now I can understand their problems better," says Karan, who feels he has a deeper connection with the show, more than a mere host. "I have seen tragedies that we have shown on our various episodes. That pain and trauma stays with me for a long time."

It is work and more work for Karan, as he laughs. "I haven't slept in ages I think. The show and films, it is going from one unfinished project to the other." When does he get time to meet his real self? "Meeting with Karan happens only when I am with my family and friends, I feel real with them." Karan will soon be seen in Bollywood films and a Punjabi movie.

A step forward

Taking a step ahead from the earlier seasons, Season 3 will focus on equipping the youth to avoid being victimised by the criminal elements at large in the society; thus focusing on the thought—"Be Aware, Be Prepared, Be Safe." Prem Kamath, general manager and channel head, who likes to interact with youngsters through live musical shows and programme, says, "We not only need to entertain the youth but also inform and prepare them. VithU app is an extension of the show which equips the society against unfavourable circumstances and can prevent their victimisation. Season 3 Gumrah is even bigger and better." The show recently won the Best Non-Fiction Show at the prestigious Indian Telly Awards.

From kandyan to kathak
For Sri Lankan dancer Samadhi Kuragodange kandyan is her religion while kathak is her passion
Amarjot Kaur

right moves: Samadhi Anurangika Kuragodange

As one begins to comprehend the characteristics of a classical dance form, one learns to appreciate its character that draws inspirations from dramatics. Samadhi Anurangika Kuragodange hails from Sri Lanka and follows Buddhism, while Shobha Koser, one of the finest exponents of kathak, trains her. Their bond is typically that of a guru-shishya, only a little more trenchant, a little more intense… We catch up with them to engage in a conversation that brings out the elements of two diverse cultures.

"I have been learning kandyan, a Sri Lankan folk dance, under the aegis of Rajani Sielvanayagam since I was 9," begins Samadhi. "It was only after I gave the national dancing examination that was conducted by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs that my father asked me to visit India and learn one of its classical dances at the Pracheen Kala Kendra. He heard a lot about City Beautiful from his friends and I came here when I was 20," she says.

Samadhi has performed at the 10th South Asian Games and she is here at Pracheen Kala Kendra to study kathak under an ICCR scholarship. "In a year's time, my guru (Shobha Koser) trained me in kathak and I have taken a liking to this dance form," she says. So what made her chose kathak over Bharatnatyam? "I did not quite think that Bharatnatyam, which is characterised by a lot of bending movements, would have looked good on a woman with my body type and height. Though I can never choose between kathak and kandyan because kandyan is my religion and kathak is my passion," replies the five-feet-seven-inches tall Samadhi, who is now 21 years old. "Also, what I like the most about kathak is the fact that it has a lot of movements and expressions (bhav) unlike kandyan, which is not as flexible or expressive," she adds.

Samadhi, who is fluent in her native language Sinhala, was a little uncomfortable with Hindi to begin with. She gives due credit to her guru, who taught her to sing poems, toras and taraanas in Hindi. "Initially I could neither speak nor understand Hindi, but my guru trained me very well," she says while proving her point by singing a tarana that details the story about Krishna.

"It was so hard to make her understand the meaning of things like madhani (the act of churning butter). At times we would end up laughing. In this one year, I have developed a bond with Samadhi and it will be almost heartbreaking to let her go back to her country soon," says Shobha and as the words fade away, emotions overpower her as she embraces Samadhi while announcing the date of her final performance.

"Samadhi will perform at Pracheen kala Kendra on July 11 at 6.30 pm and will then teach kathak in Sri Lanka," she says as she regains composure and walks towards the tea stall.

A real take
Filmmaker Jeet Matharru's latest offering Woman from the East - Kudessan brings forth the horror of women trafficking
Manpriya Singh
(L), a still from woman from the east—Kudessan
Jeet matharru

It's the sheer absence of content in today's cinema that drove film-maker Jeet Matharru to a parallel school of thought. There's a reference to a couple of movies that recently did well. "I sit through the end of the films and find that there's no story."

No matter what the struggle is, he believes in getting the basics right. "My first criteria is that content should be inspiring and substantial, then the people involved with the making of the film should get their money back and the audience should get the value for their money." Something that he promises with his latest offering Woman from the East, also titled Kudessan.

The story brings forth the cruel realities of rural India and the plight of young women who are being trafficked because of the social circumstances. "I don't want to show rut to the audience. If, out of 300 people that watch a show, even one is moved enough to change his life, I've achieved my purpose."

A woman is uprooted from her natural surroundings and sent off to a place where she is referred as a Kudessan—a woman from the East. "A lot of heart and soul has gone into the making of this movie," shares the director of Adi Tappa, who was born and brought up in Mumbai.

Apart from the pre-production complicacies and the post-production grind, there came problems that usually accompany movies that are not blatantly commercial. "If we take the likes of Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan, it'll take years to chase them. Further, if it's a Punjabi film, the funding comes only when there are big singers in it. Nobody's really bothered about the content." Shot at a budget of Rs 2.5 crores, the film has been in the making since four years now. He explains, "We shot 80 per cent of the film again because we weren't convinced with the initial cast and the girl who plays the protagonist." When things didn't work out, in came a star from Bihar, who could speak Bhojpuri fluently.

The film is based on a play by Jatinder Brar, which "had to be worked on and translated to suit the taste of the audience," and has already garnered acclaim at the international platform, including the Punjabi International Film Festival at Toronto. "Apart from the standing ovations at various film festivals, the best compliment came from Baldev Gill, the director of Chann Pardesi, who saw the movie twice. He said this was the best film, he'd ever seen after Chann Pardesi."

He adds, "During private screenings a lot of people were against the typical arty end." It's an end that he won't reveal. "It's something that will make you cry, make you smile. But it'll certainly move you and for that you'll have to come and see the movie in October."

On the anvil is the Punjabi horror film Sikka. "It's based on a gang rape victim. But once he again, it's a film with a message," he reassures.

pet passion
Maxxi-mum pleasure
Manpriya Singh

Parul Sehgal with her pet Maxxi
Parul Sehgal with her pet Maxxi

Anything to bring home, a four legged companion! When continual persistence didn't bear fruits, she resorted to threats and tantrums. Laughs Parul Sehgal, "I told my parents that if they didn't buy me this black puppy Labrador, we went to see a few days earlier, I'd stop eating." It worked and that's how four-and-a-half years back Maxxi came home.

There is an immediate mention of the exact date of birth and an excited narration of what the bundle of joy is like. "He's not like any other dog. He's fabulous and has never really troubled us," shares the Class XII student of Carmel Convent School. "I always wanted to have a dog. Ever since I can remember but when we came to Chandigarh, due to my persistence everybody started scouting those classified advertisements in the newspapers."

Maxxi got picked up, out of a litter of five puppies. "Two had red ribbons, the other two had green ribbons but this one had a golden ribbon on him. Out of all of them, he's the one who was sticking most to us." That partially explains the threat.

Love me, love my dog

It's not just a partial love towards one's own pet but sheer consideration for the animal kind. Never mind the misadventures. "I feed stray dogs. I was once feeding biscuits to this street dog when he bit me." Coming back to the one at home, she gushes, "He's scared of lightning and he's really scared of my dad too. Otherwise he loves to play. Give him anything to play with, literally anything, a ball or a towel and he's happy." She adds, "Whenever he's excited, he gets on the bed and starts running around."

Compared to the myriad joys that generally a pet at home brings along, there have been no reasons for disapproval. "The only thing annoying about him that he doesn't let me sleep. In fact, he doesn't let anybody sleep. If he's left out, he wants to be inside an air conditioned room and once in, he will wake you up."

Yours faithfully

Like with all pet owners and animal lovers, the best reason about owning one remains the same. "It's the companionship. You always have somebody with you. Whether you are sad or happy, they understand." They may not understand what the master is going through but they always know the feelings. Who's undermining their role as a stress buster?

"When we are laughing, he gets excited and comes with his toys asking us to play. Whenever we are leaving the house, he sits in a corner and looks with sad eyes." She adds, "Once he actually sat inside the travel bag expecting to be taken along."

Doc Talk
Peel off for a new you
Dr Sukhdeep Kaur

Chemical peeling is an age-old, tried and tested scientific procedure done by dermatologists worldwide. The Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, was legendary for many reasons, one of which was her flawless complexion. Way back in 30 BC she knew the secret of beautiful skin - chemical peels. She luxuriated in milk baths containing lactic acid. Today's chemical peels still utilise that compound, as well as glycolic acid (a sugar cane derivative), salicylic acid from willow tree bark, and many other natural formulations.

Regardless of the formulation, the goal of a chemical peel is remodelling, resurfacing of the skin, elimination of dead skin cells and accelerated production of fresh, new ones. A light peel is a pampering treatment. You may return to normal activities right away, wearing good quality make-up. Others won't know you've had a dermatological procedure done, but be prepared - they may comment that you look radiant. Results continue to develop for several weeks. You'll enjoy it so much you may want to schedule this treatment once a month. After a stronger peel, you may experience some redness and flaking for up to a week, revealing a revived complexion with results that are long lasting!

Ferulac booster system

This peel renews and rejuvenates the skin, providing a younger, sun spot free and completely renewed skin in few days!

It is based on strong anti-oxidant properties of ferulac acid, phloretin, tretinoin and natural fruit acids such as citric, lactic, malic acids.

Procedure: This advanced anti-aging booster peel is a two step procedure done in by a dermatologist in a clinic.

Phase 1: The face or area to be treated is thoroughly cleaned and degreased. First 1 to 3 layers of Ferulac Peel Classic is applied and the area is massaged for optimal penetration of the peel which results in formation of a visible white mask.

Phase 2: After this, two layers of Ferulac Peel Plus are applied over the area. There is no need to wash the area. The patient is sent back and advised to wash the face after 8 hours.

Post procedure care: In the following days, a delicate and gradual exfoliation of skin will be there as a result the tissues and cells are repaired, clarified, nourished and hydrated. During the treatment application of a broad spectrum sunscreen is mandatory. The sessions are spaced at 14 days interval and total of 6 to 8 sessions area advised for a refreshing, rejuvenated, glowing skin.

The Ferulac Professional Peels results in a skin which is tight, soft, smooth. Wrinkles, aging signs, dark spots are diminished. The texture becomes fine resulting in a radiant complexion. The facial features become more relaxed and contour becomes firmer and toned.

CELEB POINT
Bonding over dumb charades
 Divya Dutta

IIFA awards are truly special, for the sheer grandeur of celebrating cinema outside India and also for bonding with your clan as you are all together.

This IIFA was memorable. The awards were awesome, but as they say the journey was fun too. From Hong Kong we had to board a ferry to Macau which was an hour's journey. Anupam Kher and I decided to play dumb charades and slowly everyone, who was initially shy or hesitant, joined in. It was like a fun classroom where everyone left his or her inhibitions and conscious of being a star and just became a kid who wanted to have fun. Of course it was a sight for the other passengers who had travelled from all over the world to see their stars at IIFA, to see them let their hair down. A few even participated in the game from a distance.

Yes, we all got out laughing. The mood was set for the celebrations.

As I went up on stage to give away an award, the hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapur greeted me with full masti, and it so happened that on our way back from Hong Kong, I and my family, Shah Rukh, Vidya Balan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shahid Kapur, Anupam Kher and Javed Akhtar were on the same flight. I asked Shah Rukh if he was up for dumb charades, and he was game, the teams were set. Shah Rukh, Shahid, Anupam and Javed saab in one team and me, Vidya, Dia Mirza, Anurag Basu and Sidharth Roy Kapoor in the other. Abhishek decided to just watch the game which ultimately became a battle. We had a very strong opponent and it was a do or die game! It was hilarious what lengths we went to, to make our team guess the film, we were on an even score. My poor mom who was trying to watch a film, her screen was either pushed of moved by Shah Rukh, Vidya and me while playing and she had to watch Gangs of Wasseypur, not once but thrice, all thanks to us. We decided to take a dinner break and then it was chat time. So beautiful to bond informally with no agendas! Shah Rukh said he had heard great things about my role in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and will be watching it soon. Vidya and I had a long girlie chat.

As we got out at the airport, the crowd had gone berserk, but Shah Rukh waited for the entire group to be together, what an awesome feeling to be taken care of...to see the humane real side of the stars, to know them as people, beautiful people I must say, waiting to open up from the layers of their superstardom, and to have them as friends.... I felt special and happy...as I left the airport, I heard my favourite guy Shah Rukh calling out to me, "I shall call you after watching Milkha."

Yes......I am waiting!

Master Chef
Pleasing parwal
Kandla Nijhowne

Now why do I only think of parwal in the mithaai avtaar? It's a vegetable for god's sake, from the gourd family. Pun intended. Yet it's not as popular in the subzi form as it is as a mithaai. As I child when we visited Kolkata, I was tickled that the Bengalis called it potol. In a savoury tossed veg, the best part of a parwal is the snapping of the seeds under your teeth. It's just one of life's little surprises!I'm bringing you the sweet version here today, a pale green, translucent parwal, filled with a creamy, elaichi flavoured mawa. The candied parwal remains firm to the bite, whereas the soft filling is in complete contrast to its exterior. This sweetmeat is not overtly sweet nor fried and heavy. Has my eloquence stirred you towards the kitchen? I hope it has!

Method

  • Coarsely grind half the almonds and sliver the other half.
  • Grind the elaichi seeds finely and chop the pistachio into slim shards.
  • Wash and peel the parwals, taking care that you don't spoil their outer shape much.
  • Make a neat slit down the centre of each of them and scoop out the inner flesh and seeds.
  • Set up water to boil the parwals (It should submerge the pieces well). Cook the parwals for 4-5 minutes or till tender.
  • Keep covered for another two minutes then drain well.
  • Make a syrup of the grain sugar and ¾ cup of water.
  • Cook the parwals in the syrup till they get a translucent sheen. Drain.
  • Cook the khoya in a heavy pan till it turns pinkish in colour.
  • Remove from heat and add sugar, elaichi powder and ground almonds.
  • Fill the cooled khoya into the waiting parwals, taking care that you do not rupture the edges.
  • Lay on a pretty platter and garnish with the slivered almonds and pistachio.
  • Chill before serving.

Note: Add a twist and subtract the calories by substituting a small quantity of khoya with desiccated coconut.

star track
Words of wisdom
Arjun Kapoor shares notes on the Hindi film industry, his journey so far, his equation with Ranveer Singh and beyond

Arjun Kapoor has had a hit with Ishaqzaade and received acclaim with Aurangzeb. But he continues to be grounded and does not consider himself a big star. He talks about health, stardom and his co-star brother.

Stardom and all that

Today we’re all actors, not stars. The only star we have among us is Ranbir (Kapoor) but he’s not considered God. We’re not considered stars because we’re not playing to the gallery. Today, films are made not only for the masses but also for intellectuals. That kind of audience doesn’t consider anyone God. To achieve stardom, you need to achieve success of a certain level. Now we play the character; earlier, the stars used to play themselves. We will have to work hard to prove ourselves.

Health wise

We have to look good because people spend their money to see us. If you respect this profession, you’ll become disciplined automatically. I weigh 87 kilos now. I eat but now I work out twice as much. I’ve managed to build this body after five years of hard work. There’s always the fear of regaining the weight. When I go to the gym, that one hour is completely my own. I switch off my cell phone so that no one disturbs me. Building a muscular body is a challenge.

On Ranveer Singh

We share a bromance of sorts and I thank him for my enthusiasm. When I’m with him, I become like him. I find it interesting how one person’s energy can awaken your own. Whether it’s a good day or a bad one, he is always in top form.

Straight talk with Sonam Kapoor

In your face: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor speaks her mind and she is witty and funny. She talks about bikinis, intimate scenes and much more.

Bikini body

Of course, I would wear a bikini on screen! I just don’t have the body right now. I am working hard to get a fit body. (Laughs) When my body is perfect, I’ll walk around the streets of Mumbai in a bikini.

Promising notes

Angelina Jolie. She’s beautiful. I also adore and admire Kareena Kapoor and we have become friends now.

On intimate scenes

I’m fine with them. It’s a part of my job. As long as it’s not cheap and sleazy, I’m okay with love-making scenes. If the film is not being promoted as ‘Oh, it has X amount of kissing scenes,’ I’m fine.

Fans frenzy

I have some amazing fans. If they feel I am low, they send me flowers and chocolates. There is this guy called Manan, who constantly follows me everywhere and gives me my favourite chocolates. He has a bike, which he made me autograph; he follows me on it. My fans aren’t the crazy, stalker types. They are intelligent and sweet and that’s what I like about them. I keep tweeting about them all the time.

I have a crush on…

Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Levine. They are hot!

Koffee with Karan

I would like to be on the show with Ranbir Kapoor. That would be fun. We have been friends since forever and we make each other laugh and say crazy things.

Comedy with a twang

Disha Vakhani has made a mark for herself with the show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Here she talks about her senior co-star, her nasal twang for the show and love for comedy

What makes the Dayaben- Jethalal Jodi so popular?

Both of them are innocent and live with each other in tandem. The comic element in the show has also made this couple so popular. The concept of the show and different topics that we come up with is interesting for us and the audience as well.

After doing the show for so long, does it get boring?

Not really. Had it been a rona-dhona serial I might have been bored. I get headache if I have to cry and act for a long time. We keep laughing all the time so we all have all the fun.

Your voice in the show is different. Whose idea was it to keep this voice on the show?

When I met Dilip sir and spoke about my character, he asked me to go for a nasal twang.

What kind of relationship do you have with your co-star Dilip Joshi?

I have a lot of respect and enjoy working with him. He's a senior but never shows off. He welcomes suggestions and is an inspiration to me.

What about marriage?

Well I am single and looking out for the right person. Let's see.
