Animal instinct
The yuppie-influenced sub-culture during the mid 80s has for long been chronicled as an assertive cult that largely dominated the fashion of that era. You could probably have smoked a cigarette on your office desk, but had you been spotted wearing a leopard-print, your disposition would have been stamped with rather outrageous tags. Considering how things change, smoking these days is socially unacceptable while animal prints are quite a fad among the masses! But when it comes to donning animal prints, one has to be rather particular about how to carry them.
Suit your type
Earlier, animal prints were restricted only to the leopard, zebra and tiger prints, which made a rather bold statement, but these days they have found a huge variety, including the animal motif. For instance, you can wear a dress that has fishes or owls or even cows printed on a plain fabric,” says Swati Shrivastava, a Delhi-based designer. “If you are going for an evening party or a get-together, the perfect way to wear the animal print look is to get a dress that has animal motifs on it. The trick is not to overdo it. If you want to wear animal prints, make sure that only one item in your complete outfit has them,” she adds.
Step in style
Ritu Kochhar, founder director, INIFD, swears by the trend that has been doing the rounds on the runway for the longest time now, “Since animal prints make a bold statement, one must consider the ways in which they can be teamed up. The worst way to wear animal prints is to team them up with neon colours. Though neons are a hot trend this season, if you are wearing animal prints make sure you wear them with a plain colour. The best way to flaunt an animal print is to wear a scarf with a fitted shirt when going to office.” She adds, “If you want a casual look, wear animal print tights with a plain t-shirt. You can also opt for an animal print scarf around your neck with a plain-coloured vest and denims. Accessorise the look with a striking pink belt that will tender the neon effect and if you have a social evening ahead, complete the look with high heels. You can also wear orange and green shorts or skirts with animal prints.”
At various shopping venues across Sector 17, including the street shop stalls, you will find a number of clutches, stoles, scarves and jewellery items that have animal prints in abundance. “The owl necklace is a fad among the city fashionistas and I have already sold quite a few of these,” says Vijay Kumar, who puts up his jewellery stall outside Sagar Ratna, Sector 17. Vera Moda, Apparel and More, whistles and Sisley also have a huge variety of animal print bags and shoes. “If you are not too comfortable with carrying off an animal print shirt or pants, then you can always carry an animal print clutch or a bag. Also; animal print heels and shoes are also quite a hit,” says Anuj Sharma, a Delhi-based designer.

A slice from real life
Getting under the skin of the character and living it each day till it actually seeps into the system…only an actor can explain this feeling better. The challenge increases manifold when a character is inspired by a real-life incident. Actor Rekha Rana lives the ordeal,
the pain and the joy of a character in her upcoming movie Tara — the journey of love and passion. Rekha has already won the best debut actress award in Jaipur International
Film festival and Nasik International Film Festival, 2013, for her performance in the film.
For this girl from Delhi, this indeed is a moment of joy, “This film is dedicated to Nirmala, the brave girl who was the victim of the heinous gang-rape. My character Tara in the film is very similar to her. Tara also faces an ordeal but still manages to put up a brave fight,” shares Rekha, who is also a trained actor. The character is pretty close to Rekha’s heart because it is through the portrayal of Tara that she realised her strengths as a woman. “It was a challenge to play this role; I just couldn’t read the lines and say it on the camera. I had to feel every word, every emotion and then I found myself sinking into the role, feeling the same pain,” shares Rekha, who lived with the gypsies to understand their way of life for the role. Acting classes from Barry John and theatre with Dinesh Thakur, this pretty-looking girl dabbles in sports and social work too. At the same time, she isn’t far away from the business of Bollywood. “Every film needs publicity and good promotion to be noticed. I am glad that our film Tara is being noticed and going places.” She is quick to add though that it is the role that makes all the difference to the actor. “To me a role as well as its depth is more important than anything else. I would like a role that I can relate to rather than something that I am not convinced about.” It is film promotion time for Rekha and she is enjoying the attention. “I want women to stand up against injustice and discover their strengths. If it is possible through films then why not,” she adds. Offers are falling, but Rekha wants to add meaning to her work and she wants to weigh her options before moving ahead. jasmine@tribunemail.com

In between notes
It's a switch between handling the immigration procedures at Geneva Airport and shooting for the video in the middle of Punjab. It's only the formalities of customs that can, perhaps, put together a Punjabi singer and an immigration officer. Sunny Cheema claims to balance the remotely connected fields and how!
"I shuttle between here and there; I am travelling 15 days in a month…I utilise all my leave," shares the Punjabi singer originally from Dasuha, during the launch of his album titled The Dreamer. It's the fourth album, aimed at contributing to the music industry of the region while at the same time getting a firm foothold in the limelight. "Movies are my main target. It's just a way of announcing that I'm available for any quality work because I'm not willing to go around asking for work like a struggler," he minces no words and what you see is literally what you get. "I don't mind working for free either, provided I get respect and recognition for my work but making the rounds of producers is just not my thing. My album and the videos are a presentation of my talent and capabilities; if anyone's interested, hopefully they'll approach me." It's a refreshing change from the clichéd responses and well-rehearsed speeches. A change from how a dozen scripts are in the pipeline and nothing can be discussed at the moment, a change from how work fell in their laps! He adds, "As of now, I have no scripts and there's nothing planned." As for the album, there are eight songs that have been put together in a span of two to three years. "All the songs have different flavours; you'll find romantic songs, sad songs, fast tracks, slow numbers, everything." The videos, for two of the songs, including Gabru, have already been shot at various parts of Punjab. If one of the tracks deals with heartbreaks, the other talks of bloodshed. "I don't think any youngster is likely to get inspired by just a video or a song. It's all meant for amusement and entertainment. At the end of the day, it's just a song." The first three albums, Kuri Nachdi Phire, Kuri Kuwari and Dil Tenu Karda Pasand, fell pretty much in the same genre and comprise romantic numbers; pop-beats and lyrics to go with them all. It's been a decade since the first album was released in 2003. "I don't think that as yet I have the talent or the capability to come out with Sufi music or folk numbers. One needs to have been trained like that." What he's instead ready for is to make his presence felt on the celluloid. "I recently saw and really liked Fukrey. I connected well with the script and would love to be a part of a film like that." As for the singers, there's a reluctance to take names. A little nudge, some provocations and after a couple of names, Gurdaas Maan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Chamkila…there must be somebody who influenced at a young age…"Sukhwinder Singh of Chaiyya Chaiyya." manpriya@tribunemail.com

Guessing game
Sachin Kalra Have you been doing the same exercise routine for weeks, or even months? Whether it's jogging on the treadmill or riding a stationary bike, any exercise routine grows stale with time. Not only does a stale routine zap your enthusiasm, but it leads to the dreaded exercise plateau. Adding variety to an exercise programme can improve adherence and can also help you stay physically and mentally stimulated. In short, you need to give your body a little variety, and keep it guessing. Add variety
When you first start a new exercise routine, your body works hard to perform the unfamiliar movements. But, if you do the same workout over and over, your body adapts and gets used to the routine, leading to a plateau. Variation plays a crucial role in getting off this plateau. Challenge your body in a way that it's not used to. This will keep your muscles challenged, your body guessing, and the results coming! Change is fun
Prevent boredom from effecting your motivation to train. Change can make your workouts fun and interesting, giving you something to look forward to. And that is exactly what will keep you coming back for more. Also, avoid repetitive strain injury. This type of injury often occurs from doing lots of repetitive motions, such as running, hitting a tennis ball, kicking (in kickboxing or martial arts classes), or performing the same swimming stroke. By mixing up your activities, you give those overused muscles, joints, and ligaments a chance to rest and recover before putting them into action again. Regular intervals
Most experts recommend changing workout routines every four to six weeks. It takes the body at least three to four weeks to adapt to a workout programme and become more efficient. So, plan for a change after a month or so. For beginners
Beginners should focus on doing the same workout routine for at least 6-8 weeks. The reason for this is their bodies will take much longer to adapt to the exercises and workouts than someone who is more advanced. The time frame of 6-8 weeks gives enough time for the beginner to master certain routines and exercises they are focusing on and will allow for great of strength gains. Beginners that focus on doing the same routine for too long or that change their routine daily or weekly, will find it hard to make progress. For advanced workers
A professional athlete's body will adapt to workouts and exercises much faster than a beginner's would. Once you feel you have reached the level that is past being a beginner, you can start changing your workout routines every 3-6 weeks. More advanced workers should change their routines closer to 3-4 weeks while intermediate workers can get away with doing a routine for closer to six weeks. The more your fitness level advances, the more you will have to change your workouts. Mix and match
Another alternative to changing your workout routine is to constantly vary it - even during the same session. For example, instead of spending thirty monotonous minutes on the treadmill, rotate between machines. Do 10 minutes on the elliptical, 10 on the treadmill, and a final 10 on the elliptical bike. Time goes by more quickly, and you'll work more muscles. Try changing the order in which you do your exercises. For example, if you are used to doing cardio first and weights second, do your weights first and then your cardio. Also practice interval training. In addition, you can alternate intense cardio activity with strength training to keep the workout interesting and challenging. (Kalra is a Chandigarh-based

Rise to the occasion
Divya Dutta You feel it happens to others, you feel you see it in movies…I was in Thailand when I heard about what happened in Uttarakhand. The first reaction was of sheer disbelief. It can't happen because you feel life just has to go on normally. We plan our lives, 'Ok, I will see you tomorrow or let's work on it in a week's time but has anyone been sure of that tomorrow coming? Thousands of people have lost their lives, houses have been washed away like clay toys by the nature's wrath! People are still stranded, penniless, homeless, their family members gone! What a loss! I saw an old man in a news channel, crying, "We have lost everything. Family, house, work." Who would even look after him now? What really still plays on my mind is the picture of this young girl, her sheer innocence and hope. She smiled faintly to the camera and said, "Yeah, I saw my village getting washed away. And now I am living in a camp taking each day as it comes." The people who were leading normal happy lives, who had everything, stand there looking at the nature's fury, having lost it all. Who do you blame? It's debatable and endless. But what's most important is how do we now help those who are left with nothing? We are seeing endless debates in all channels. The blame game being played to the hilt but the question is does it undo what's happened? Can we rise above it and get together to help as a nation? Can we do what we can best do, in our own smallest possible ways? Maybe the Rs 100 that you send could get someone there a meal. Do it and don't sit there thinking others are doing it anyway. Your contribution will help. Can the government go easy on permissions so that the trucks with all the food and relief materials can reach there in time? Can we be more prepared with the new warnings for the rains yet again? And most importantly, can we put personal gains aside and stop playing with nature? Constructions, buildings everywhere, without realising their repercussions, cutting away the natural lands and taking what belongs to them? Please, let it not happen again. Let it be seen in just movies, let life be normal...like it should be…can we do it please? (Dutta is a Bollywood actress) |

Oats couture!
Kandla Nijhowne The weather is one muggy, soppy, humid mess, and I'm still being pretty polite about this, dear readers! We love those pakoras and halwas while the rain gods are being kind, but when they retreat and push the sun god forward, we are pickled in our own sweat. That's a great time to look for recipes like this one--light, nourishing, easy to cook and lip-smacking good! Idlis made with oats pack a wholesome punch. Add grated carrots and you've doubled their goodness. Add a sharp, tangy chutney, you will even have a fussy kid reaching out for a second helping. Method
Note: For prettier looking idlis, place a sprig of coriander, a few slivers of carrot, even a cashew half at the bottom of each mould, prior to spooning the mixture into them. The ready idlis will have an extra special
look!

star track
Sonakshi Sinha: She has worked with the biggest heroes in the industry and her name has never been linked with any of them. Her mother accompanies her all the time and it seems her successful professional life has left her with little time for a romantic life.
Katrina Kaif:
For the longest time, she was with Salman Khan even though they never confirmed their romance. Then she reportedly was involved with John Abraham and there have been consistent stories about her and Ranbir Kapoor now. They have been spotted together in Mumbai and abroad. Let's see where this goes. Priyanka Chopra: Her career is going great guns but there is no confirmation about her love life. So far she has been linked with Akshay Kumar, Harman Baweja, Shahid Kapoor and her biggest link-up is with Shah Rukh Khan.
Anushka Sharma: She is a feisty actress and fun to talk to. But she takes a no comments stance when it comes to her love life. She has been linked with Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor.
Sonam Kapoor: Her parents have the ideal marriage and she has very high standards. The fashionista poses all by herself on the red carpet. She was apparently dating director Punit Malhotra for two years but has split up with him to focus on her career. She thinks it tacky to publicly talk about one's love life.
Emraan in Aamir’s league
Emraan Hashmi has been cast by Mahesh Bhatt in the remake of Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin in which Hashmi will reprise Aamir Khan's character and will do justice to it by playing an unapologetic rake. The director and heroine have not been finalised yet.
Boys’ time out
Akshay Kumar invites his Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara director Milan Luthria for a short holiday in New York.
Milan will join his lead actor Akshay Kumar in New York, where the two plan to mix business with pleasure, working on a few things, including the dub of the new theatrical trailer of Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara as well as attend a press conference to reach out to the US and Canadian audience. The director, who has had a hectic time shooting for the film, was keen on taking a short vacation and actor Akshay Kumar suggested New York. Says Milan, "It's a small but welcome break…Akshay is a great guy to hang out with and we had earlier decided that we would have a couple of fun outings, especially since we've worked so hard on the film." He adds, "We need to dub for the new theatrical trailer of OUATIMD, which has Akshay's voice-over. We also want to reach out to the US and Canadian media, as Akshay is hugely loved there." Balaji Motion Pictures' Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara, starring Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha, is scheduled to release on August 15.
Seizing the moment
John Abraham has seized the moment and grabbed the release date of August 23 which Prakash Jha has left out. He will release Madras Cafe on that day. So August will have one big release every week and every movie will get one week of solo run instead of clashing with each other.
Deepika’s no calendar girl
According to the latest buzz, director Madhur Bhandarkar has approached Deepika Padukone for the lead role in his next film titled Calendar Girl, which will be again inspired by real events. However, Madhur denied the buzz and said, "Just to set the record straight, I am not making any film called Calendar Girl. So there's no question of approaching any actor or actress. Currently I am busy scripting my next film. Casting will come later. When the time is right, I'll make an official announcement." Considering Madhur's films have changed the lives and careers of Kareena Kapoor, Tabu and Konkona Sen Sharma and Priyanka Chopra for the better, we guess it's a loss for
Deepika!
Ranveer cares
Ranveer Singh has been visiting the Ambani Hospital in Andheri lately as his close friend is suffering from brain hemorrhage and is admitted in the ICU. He is there often to support his friend and the family. How sweet!
Bang on time
Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif have completed two schedules for Bang Bang, one action schedule in Thailand
and another romantic sequence in Greece. Another schedule will start this month in India and the rest of the film will be shot in India, South East Asia and Europe. |

Ekta down, not out
The charming beauty Ekta Kaul, who won several hearts with her innocence and grace, has bid adieu to celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhlaa Jaa on Colors. The actor, who had also suffered a shoulder injury, found herself in the bottom two alongside Aarti Chabbaria. The shy Ekta Kaul had a rocky beginning in the show, but with her undeterred determination and hardwork, she went on surprising the jury and audiences with her touching performances week after week. She had managed to win everybody’s hearts and garnered some very motivational comments from the judges as well. How did it feel to be out of the show? This was the first time I have ever tried dancing in my life and that too on a national platform like Jhalak. I am disappointed to be eliminated at this stage after five weeks, but it has been the best learning experience of my life and I am taking back a lot with me. You must have felt really bad to have been ousted from the show, right? I wanted to go out with a better performance. I felt bad that I got injured and was unable to continue. How is your shoulder now? It’s healing. There was a problem with the shoulder muscle. It’s moving now and the doctors have advised rest for fifteen days. There is no big issue, but I need to take care right now and put no stress on myself. What will you remember about the show? I learnt to overcome inhibitions and perform before audiences. What’s next? After some rest I will return to acting soon.
Back after a break
Kritika Kamra was enjoying her days off and even went to Europe for a holiday, but now it seems she’s back to work. She will be doing Balaji and Karan Johar's next, starring Emraan Hashmi. Apparently Kritika had to give an audition to be selected for this role.
Honeymoon shoot
While other shows have gone abroad for honeymoon sequences, Shakuntalam Telefilms’ Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’s Gunjan (Roopal Tyagi) and Mayank (Ankit Gera) will go to Goa but only in the show. The actors shot for the scenes in Aksa beach in Mumbai.
Supriya bags a role
Yashashri Masurkar, who was seen as Bharti in Sanskaar, quit the show a while ago as she wasn’t happy with the role. Now Supriya Kumari will be playing the role. She was earlier seen in Bairi Piya. Now, Bharti will perform a negative role.
A hot affair
Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti of Zee’s Qubool Hai went to Pushkar and Ajmer to shoot the upcoming dramatic scenes in the show. The heat was too much for the cast and crew, who had to shoot intense scenes in the desert and Amer fort in
Jaipur.
Chaiji compares Nihal to Sampooran and asks him not to leave. Nihal can’t take it anymore and confesses his crime to Chaiji. Chaiji is shocked to know about the connection between Sampooran and Nihal. Shattered, Chaiji asks him to leave Pritampura immediately.
Sudhir’s party rocks!
Producer duo Sudhir Sharma and Seema Sharma (Sunshine Productions) threw a party to celebrate the completion of hundred episodes of Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha Season Two on Colors and two hundred episodes of The Buddy Project on Channel V. Aakankasha Singh (Megha) and Jayshri Venkatraman (Navika) looked different in their black Western dresses. Rinku Karmarkar was seen flaunting her tattoo and posing for the shutterbugs. Naman Shaw was seen bonding with Jayashri Venkatraman. Aanchal Khurana was heard narrating stories about her Manali trip to her friends. Manav Gohil made an entry with wife Shweta and was heard telling that they had come only after their daughter was put to sleep. Roopal Tyagi came directly from the shoot to be with her boyfriend Aklaque Khan and she was seen enjoying the party. Aakanksha Singh got compliments for her looks. — HRM
