Close shave for passengers in bus fire

Around 30 passengers on a PGI-bound low-floor bus of the CTU had a miraculous escape when the engine of the bus, located on the rear side, caught fire apparently due to a short circuit.

Man gets 2-year jail for kidnapping minor

A local court today sentenced a 65-year-old man to two years' rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping a minor daughter of his tenant in Mauli Jagran this year.

Rain brings respite from humid weather

After a couple of muggy days, the city today witnessed heavy rain in the evening, bringing a pleasant change in the weather. There were again traffic snarls due to the flooding of the roads. The rain was experienced in a scattered area while a few places on the outskirts received heavy showers.

UT DIG shifted to Arunachal Pradesh

The UT DIG, Alok Kumar, who joined the UT police in May, 2010, as SSP (Headquarters and Intelligence) has been transferred to Arunachal
Pradesh.
Alok Kumar, a 1996-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, joined as UT SSP (Headquarters and Intelligence) in May 2010. Later on, he was promoted as DIG, Chandigarh. He was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services on Republic Day in January 2013.

Cop dies in harness at Mohali
Mohali, July 2
A 27-year-old policeman, Davinder Singh, today died of cardiac arrest while performing duty at Punjab State Cyber Crime Police Station, Phase 4, here.
According to the area station house officer, Samar Vineet, Davinder Singh, who worked as a lab attendant at the cyber cell, was in his office when his condition deteriorated at around 11.30 am. “He was taken to a private hospital where he died. The doctors said he died of cardiac arrest,” said the SHO.

A day after a 22-year-old woman moved court alleging senior police officials were not acting on her complaint of domestic violence and rape, the advocate, against whom she has levelled the allegations of rape, also moved court today terming the woman’s claims as false and frivolous and sought dismissal of the complaint.

PGI staff accused of carelessness

Owing to alleged carelessness on the part of the PGI staff, 73-year-old Yash Gupta suffered injuries on the head and lips when she turned up for a positron emission tomography (PET) scan, said her son Rakesh Gupta. Yash Gupta had four stitches on the lips and a minor injury on the head after she fell in the wash room of the waiting room at the PGI today.
Power consumers face harassment

Power consumers faced harassment in depositing bills here today as counters at the office of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) in the industrial area were allegedly shut down before the scheduled timing and they had to return back home without making their payments.
Rs 2.90 crore transferred to 14,478 beneficiaries

The Chandigarh Administration today rolled out the second phase of the direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme with the transfer of about Rs 2.90 crore to 14,478 beneficiaries under various Central and state schemes. These schemes include Social Welfare Pensions, Indira Gandhi Matritava Sahyog Yojana, post-matric scholarship for SC students and pre-matric scholarship for SC students.
All set for panchayat poll today

To ensure peaceful panchayat elections in Mohali district tomorrow, all arrangements have been put in place, claimed the district administration here today.

PU declares BEd admission schedule

Panjab University has declared the BEd admission schedule for its affiliated colleges
in the city.
Admissions to BEd (general), BEd (yoga) and BEd Special Education (mental retardation) at Brahamrishi Yoga Training College, Sector 19-A, Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, Government College of Yoga Education and Health, Sector 23, Government College of Education, Sector 20, and Regional Institute of Mentally Handicapped, Sector 31, will be done through centralised counselling. Those who aspire to take admission to these colleges may apply on line from July 2 to July 11.
Over 7,000 students deposit fees

A day after the release of the stream and school-wise merit list for admission to Class XI, hundreds of students deposited their fees in government schools here today. As many as 12,000 seats were allotted on Monday.

French dept Prof tops PU law entrance exam

The results of law (three-year) entrance exam at Panjab University (PU) for 404 seats were declared today. Professor Cecilia Anthony of the French Department at PU has topped the entrance exam.
Colleges denied nod to start new courses

Panjab University has denied approval to its various affiliated colleges to start new courses from the coming academic session following their failure to meet the 100 per cent compliance to start these courses.
