No more fountains for city
Chandigarh, July 2
A musical fountain at Nehru Park in Sector 22, Chandigarh. The UT Administration today directed the municipal corporation (MC) not to install any more fountains in the city. The directions were issued with a view to preserving the heritage character of the city.

Close shave for passengers in bus fire

Around 30 passengers on a PGI-bound low-floor bus of the CTU had a miraculous escape when the engine of the bus, located on the rear side, caught fire apparently due to a short circuit.

Man gets 2-year jail for kidnapping minor
Chandigarh, July 2
A local court today sentenced a 65-year-old man to two years' rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping a minor daughter of his tenant in Mauli Jagran this year.

Hooda, top officials made to sweat
Panchkula, July 2
The non-functional compressor of one of the two chillers of the centrally air-conditioned system at the Indradhanush auditorium at Sector 5 here left everyone sweating, including Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, at a state-level function organised by the Police Department and the Human Rights Commission.

Rain brings respite from humid weather
Chandigarh, July 2
Hazy weather reduced visibility in Chandigarh on Tuesday. After a couple of muggy days, the city today witnessed heavy rain in the evening, bringing a pleasant change in the weather. There were again traffic snarls due to the flooding of the roads. The rain was experienced in a scattered area while a few places on the outskirts received heavy showers.

UT DIG shifted to Arunachal Pradesh
Chandigarh, July 2
Alok Kumar The UT DIG, Alok Kumar, who joined the UT police in May, 2010, as SSP (Headquarters and Intelligence) has been transferred to Arunachal Pradesh. Alok Kumar, a 1996-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, joined as UT SSP (Headquarters and Intelligence) in May 2010. Later on, he was promoted as DIG, Chandigarh. He was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services on Republic Day in January 2013.

Cop dies in harness at Mohali
Mohali, July 2
A 27-year-old policeman, Davinder Singh, today died of cardiac arrest while performing duty at Punjab State Cyber Crime Police Station, Phase 4, here. According to the area station house officer, Samar Vineet, Davinder Singh, who worked as a lab attendant at the cyber cell, was in his office when his condition deteriorated at around 11.30 am. “He was taken to a private hospital where he died. The doctors said he died of cardiac arrest,” said the SHO.

Allegations against me false: Lawyer

A day after a 22-year-old woman moved court alleging senior police officials were not acting on her complaint of domestic violence and rape, the advocate, against whom she has levelled the allegations of rape, also moved court today terming the woman’s claims as false and frivolous and sought dismissal of the complaint.

More files of Parsvnath case missing

A few days after the files pertaining to the Parsvnath case went missing from the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) building, duplicate copies of the record from the office of the ADC and the SDM (East) have also gone missing.

Cheque donated for flood victims

The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) has handed over donation cheques worth Rs 5 lakh for the Uttarakhand victims to the UT Deputy Commissioner to be deposited in the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

PGI staff accused of carelessness
Chandigarh, July 2
Owing to alleged carelessness on the part of the PGI staff, 73-year-old Yash Gupta suffered injuries on the head and lips when she turned up for a positron emission tomography (PET) scan, said her son Rakesh Gupta. Yash Gupta had four stitches on the lips and a minor injury on the head after she fell in the wash room of the waiting room at the PGI today.

Power consumers face harassment

Power consumers faced harassment in depositing bills here today as counters at the office of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) in the industrial area were allegedly shut down before the scheduled timing and they had to return back home without making their payments.

Rs 2.90 crore transferred to 14,478 beneficiaries
Chandigarh, July 2
The Chandigarh Administration today rolled out the second phase of the direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme with the transfer of about Rs 2.90 crore to 14,478 beneficiaries under various Central and state schemes. These schemes include Social Welfare Pensions, Indira Gandhi Matritava Sahyog Yojana, post-matric scholarship for SC students and pre-matric scholarship for SC students.

All set for panchayat poll today
Mohali, July 2
Police parties leave for poll duty in Mohali on Tuesday. To ensure peaceful panchayat elections in Mohali district tomorrow, all arrangements have been put in place, claimed the district administration here today. Mohali Deputy Commissioner-cum district election officer Tajinder Pal Singh Sidhu said 1,500 policemen and 2,000 administrative officials had been deputed for the elections.

Janta Land Promoters Limited managing director Kulwant Singh has donated water coolers, TV sets, ACs and ceiling fans to Mohali-based Ambedkar Institute of Careers and Courses of the Department of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes. Rajwinder Kaur, principal of the institute, said he had been associated with the institute for the past seven years  and helping the students with things needed at the institute.

PU declares BEd admission schedule
Chandigarh, July 2
Panjab University has declared the BEd admission schedule for its affiliated colleges in the city. Admissions to BEd (general), BEd (yoga) and BEd Special Education (mental retardation) at Brahamrishi Yoga Training College, Sector 19-A, Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, Government College of Yoga Education and Health, Sector 23, Government College of Education, Sector 20, and Regional Institute of Mentally Handicapped, Sector 31, will be done through centralised counselling. Those who aspire to take admission to these colleges may apply on line from July 2 to July 11.

Over 7,000 students deposit fees
Chandigarh, July 2
Students, along with their parents, deposit fees for admission to Class XI at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 20, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. A day after the release of the stream and school-wise merit list for admission to Class XI, hundreds of students deposited their fees in government schools here today. As many as 12,000 seats were allotted on Monday.

French dept Prof tops PU law entrance exam

The results of law (three-year) entrance exam at Panjab University (PU) for 404 seats were declared today. Professor Cecilia Anthony of the French Department at PU has topped the entrance exam.

Colleges denied nod to start new courses

Panjab University has denied approval to its various affiliated colleges to start new courses from the coming academic session following their failure to meet the 100 per cent compliance to start these courses.

Policeman creates ruckus, beaten up by shopkeepers
Kalka, July2
A policeman, who was allegedly making nuisance at the T-intersection of the Kalka MC roundabout, adjacent to the NH-22, was severely beaten up by some shopkeepers. The policeman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital. The eyewitnesses said the incident took place on Monday night night, when Bhulla Rana, a head constable, who in an 'inebriated condition', came in his personal car and started creating nuisance and started abused the shopkeepers. — OC

104 polling booths declared sensitive

A total of 104 polling booths have been declared sensitive for the panchayat elections to be held here on Wednesday. Five polling booths in the district have been declared hypersensitive.

The administration has made elaborate arrangements to conduct the panchayat elections in a free and fair manner and nobody would be allowed to disturb the poll process, said Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer while dispatching the polling parties along with the election material.

Trisha wins bronze in world archery cup

Trisha Deb, an eminent archer of BA-II of Khalsa College, Patiala, has brought laurels after winning a bronze medal with her team members during the first stage of the  World Archery Cup in Shanghai, China. Avtar Singh, president, SGPC, Amritsar, congratulated her and declared to honour her by giving Rs 51,000.

HC tells trial court to consider SIT report
Chandigarh, July 2
Acting on a petition for an independent probe into the Jyoti murder case, which involves a Congress MLA from Himachal Pradesh, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Panchkula trial court to consider the report of the special investigation team and take action accordingly.

Man gets six-year jail
Mohali, July 2
A local court today sentenced a man to six years' jail, along with a fine of Rs 60,000, for being in possession of 1.8 kg opium in 2009.

Constable’s wife teased, threatened
Chandigarh, July 2
A Chandigarh police constable’s wife has alleged she was harassed, teased and liquid was poured on her by two masked bikers in Police Colony, Sector 20. The incident took place two days ago and an FIR was registered when a complaint was lodged with the police.

Institute owner booked for rape
Chandigarh, July 2
Acting on the complaint of a 20-year-old girl, the police has registered a case of rape against the owner of a Mani Majra-based institute. The accused, Chanderpal, is on the run.

First indoor basketball court in city to be ready by July-end
Chandigarh, July 2
Work on the Indoor Basketball Court in progress at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, in Chandigarh. Coming August, the local cagers will receive the news which they have been waiting to hear for the past three years. The construction work at the first indoor basketball stadium of the UT Sports Department, at the Sports Complex of Sector 42, is expected to get over by the coming month. Officials of the sports department are hoping that the arena will start functioning very soon.
