Wherever life takes
Bollywood actress Geeta Basra has no regrets about the films she chose and is happy to go with the flow
Jasmine Singh

There are two kinds of people in Bollywood industry, largely! (In fact, every person in Bollywood is different). Ones who don't what to miss the train and others who wouldn't mind not boarding an overloaded train and would rather wait till something better comes along. For the latter ones, it is the journey which is paramount. Actor Geeta Basra slips easily into the second slot. You won't see her pretty often on screen or on page 3 covers but the actor is happy with the ride so far. Travelling, signing endorsements and preparing for upcoming flicks, Geeta Basra talks only about present.

"I have recently signed an endorsement deal with Sonotech Mobiles. This association as a brand ambassador of this company will be on for the next 18 months. I am looking forward to this," she shares before moving on to a chit chat on her films.

Geeta was first noticed in Emraan Hashmi starrer Dil Diya Hai. She was later seen in The Train with the same star. "I like acting and I thoroughly enjoy my work. I have no regrets about the films I chose, in fact I did pretty well," she carries on with the conversation confidently. "There is a place for everyone in the industry. There is no denying the fact whether you want to be a part of the competition or just enjoy whatever you are doing," says Geeta who will be next seen in Mr Joe B Carvalho and Bhaiyaji Superhit, starring Sunny Deol. "Mr Joe B is a full on dhamaal movie. I will be doing comedy for the first time," she quips.

Mumbai is where her heart lies now. Born in UK, the actor loves to be in Bollywood. "I totally love the set up and I want to be a part of it." With an item song in Zilla Ghaziabad, Geeta would want to do all kinds of roles. "I was getting offers for similar kind of roles; however, I want to try something different, something substantial and challenging."

Meanwhile, it's regular workout at the gym, watching movies and gladly enjoying the train ride, happy to go wherever it takes!

Character calling
Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari is back. And this time the script is based on her character in Bajatey Raho...
Mona

A woman in her fifties doing the lead for a full-fledged movie is not a common practice in Bollywood. Trust Shashant Shah, who gave Dasvidaniya and Chalo Dilli, to do the unusual and you see promise when the woman in question happens to be Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari!
Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari in Bajatey Raho
A fine balance: Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari in Bajatey Raho

Vicky Donor made her come from the back of the stage (she is an immensely successful film costume designer) to the front and bag laurels. In fact, this role made Shashant change the original script of Bajatey Raho. Back home from her constant travels that her work demands, Dolly divulges that it was the sincerity of the director that made her say yes to the film. "I have been a fan of Shashant for I really liked both his films - Dasvidaniya and Chalo Dilli. It was his sincerity that struck me during the narration. How many actresses have roles written for them? I consider myself lucky," says Dolly, adding in the same breath that the director's confidence put her under immense pressure instantaneously.

"Working with the titans Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Ravi Kishan and Tushar Kapoor did not make things easier. Each day I prayed that I was able to deliver," says Dolly, laughing that she along with the cast was still fighting for lines till the posters came out.

Shot in Delhi, Dolly plays Mummy Ji, yes a Punjabi one, but this Mummy Ji is different; a woman fraught with wrongs finds the right way to set things in place. Does she resemble the character she plays? "I do identify with the positivity of the character; on how she approaches life that's full of difficulties."

While the actors had a blast on the sets, Dolly emphasises that Shashant is a relaxed director. "There was no rush on the sets. I must say Krishika Lulla is a concerned producer and Eros a cool production house. Actors as well as crew were kept so comfortable that one did not mind a day extra here or there."

Comedies are what Dolly enjoys but the actor in her hankers after more challenges, "I would love to play tragic characters," she admits. "Been part of the industry for so long, the actor in me got fulfilled by designing for the characters till I took full-length acting assignments."

When it comes to her dressing in films, she banks totally on her designers. "In all my three recent films, I wore designs by a young team and totally loved it. I give them their fair share of independence just as I demand mine as a costume designer," she confesses.

While Dolly awaits a response for Bajatey Raho that hits the screen on July 26, she has a message for the audience, "I received numerous honours for designing but I missed the connect with the audience. They must be aware that back stage artistes are as much responsible for bringing a story alive as those on screen!"

Meanwhile we enjoy her magic on both on screen and off, awaiting both Bajatey Raho and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag that she has designed for and will hit the screen in July!

Screen presence
Director duo Rimpy Prince believes in the strength of storyline and dialogue
Jasmine Singh

Rimpy Prince… those who have foot tapped to the hit Punjabi songs couldn't have missed this name. With more than 2000 music videos to their credit, the two video directors from Jalandhar have changed the way the music videos look. And now, they are repeating the feat in Punjabi movies as well. The film directors of Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad starring Roshan Prince, Japji Khera, BN Sharma, Bhanushree Mehra, Rana Ranbir are all set to take the audience through a fun filled ride.

Rimpy & Prince
Cut to cut: (L-R) Rimpy & Prince

The two brothers are all set for the movie, which has all the elements of entertainment. But most importantly, it has a storyline. Says Rimpy, the elder one who is absolutely clear about what he wants from the project he takes up. "A storyline is an important ingredient of the movie. It is around the story that my characters will revolve. So, it undoubtedly is of utmost importance."

Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad is a movie that promises all elements of entertainment. And this definitely does not mean 'only' comedy. "I believe that a movie should explore all aspects of entertainment, comedy is also a part of it. All the same, I wouldn't want it to become bigger than the film. Fer Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad has situational comedy, which is neither repetitive nor boring."

With both the brothers working together the chances of a healthy creative rift cannot be overruled. Rimpy laughs. "We are known in the industry for healthy debates. My father Avtar Singh taught us one thing, either convince the other person, or get convinced. If I want something in a particular way, I have to convince Prince and the same holds true for him as well."

Punjabi cinema has taken fancy with the word 'star'. But Rimpy has something else in mind that will break the monotony. "I select my artistes according to the character. I will not go by stars and I don't want their image to overshadow the subject. I found that Roshan fitted in the character so I went ahead with him," shares the director who believes in showcasing the rich heritage of Punjab through his work.

And this applies to films and music videos as well. "Directing a video has a different requirement, nonetheless it needs a storyline for sure. Whether it needs a strong or light treatment, it depends on the song."

stress buster
Create your happy space
Renee Singh

Nature has always been considered therapeutic. To have nature somewhat at our own doorstep is what a garden seems to signify. Watching flowers bloom can be a huge source of joy and creating a whole natural scenario gives us just an extra dose of adrenalin that sets our happy hormones in motion.

Gardening is one of the great ways of improving your mood. It brings great joy to your heart and beauty to the world around you. Having a beautiful garden can be a great stress reliever, whether you have a small patio or a great amount of space to tend.

The act of creating nature's haven of your own kind can be a great stress reliever in itself.

Benefits of gardening

* Benefits of gardening are so essentially relaxing that we simply cannot ignore them.

* Just getting into the sunshine is a natural mood elevator. Also sulight provides the essential influx of vitamin D. Fresh air is another gift of the garden. When we breathe in the open air it is great for our health. In fact there is a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder which affects some people in winter months with lesser sunshine.

* The beauty of nature is just an absolute natural stress reliever. Relaxation has been connected so often with pictures of stunning landscapes or recordings of sounds of birds, waterfalls or other natural elements. Having our own individual space of beauty which can serve you during meditation, contemplation and relaxation can be a great stress reliever.

* Just being in natural environment, soaking in the sunshine, listening to the birds chirping or watching the bees and butterflies hovering over colourful flowers is a natural source of relieving stress. The mind just begins to ease as it conjoins with all that is around.

* Many people need to take a break from work or watching too much TV. Nature is the perfect companion for creating a stress free environment. If you can't go hiking or camping as often you like, having your own piece of natural space is one good way of satisfying these urges.

Getting started

Being in sync with nature of course is a mind set. Getting started may seem a bit intimidating but finding a few good books on gardening can give you a lot of information and ideas to work with. Measure the size of space you have, your personal taste of course is most important. Create something visually which you would enjoy and see what is the kind of money you would spend on it. You must ensure that this is going to be a fun project for you.

Landscape design

I'm sure as we all wonder at the secret underlying the ''magic'' of the landscape design, we have to realise that translating that magic into reality is what makes it understandable at the do-it-yourself level. Whenever you are putting something together your mind is engaged in designing, however, humble your project might be, your stress hormones are naturally getting a beating here without realising it.

Creating a peace zone

This is like your ideal mental vacation spot. Give yourself the relief and joy of a good garden which you have created. Once started you will find that the act of creating a garden gives you peace and the garden itself brings you joy. Just enjoy doing it.

There is something about coffee… Perhaps, it was bittersweet intoxicating quality that made the sixteenth-century Muslim rulers put a ban on it. Well, we are only glad that the city folks savour the beverage in all its glory. The Barista Lavazza Café organised the Barista Lavazza Café scrabble 2013, a scrabble competition that was brought in association with the Scrabble Association of India and Mattel.

"The Barista Lavazza Café was the first to introduce the concept of scrabble, more than 13 years ago, when it launched its first outlet," begins Nilanjan Bhattacharya, COO, India and SAARC at Barista Lavazza. "We had been organising the scrabble competitions a couple of years ago and now we are back, intending to make this competition an annual feature. More than 150 people applied for the contest out of which we selected five participants for the city round. While the city winner will be awarded with a Barista Lavazza gift hamper and a gift voucher from the Mahindra Club, the national winner will win an I-pad," he adds.

The contest was held across Chandigarh, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata. While Nipun Batra, Inderbeer Jaspal, Tanu Johar and Arsh Nagpal were the four finalists from Chandigarh, Nipun Batra, an engineering student from Chitkara University, won the city-level competition with 93 points. Meanwhile, Tanu, who is pursuing her BSc at Panjab University scored a 90. The name game

Colour code
Tanya Malhotra

They say colours add flavour to your life; each reflecting a mood and a taste that one hopes to savour. When it comes to white, it largely reflects peace. The newly opened Hotel Absolute Comfort, sector 35 Chandigarh spreads the 'sweet fragrance of hospitality.

"Colours have a direct relationship with nature," says, Amarjeet Singh Walia, managing director, Absolute Comfort. He adds, "These days people choose the colour of their walls with absolute care and concentration, what is special about this hotel is the wise use of the concept of colours. The rooms will be allotted to our customers in accordance to the colour of their choice."

The 11 rooms are largely splashed with different colour codes. Starting from pistachio green, satin white, buttery yellow, bounty blue, naughty orange to ruby red, nutty chocolate or passionate purple; such names clearly explain what you can hope to see inside! And they are subtle and warm with a white base so you can just relax. Adding to the uniqueness, there are no 'numbers' allotted to the rooms, so while visiting one might hope to hear, 'Can you send a bottle of water in bounty blue?' So, which one is your favourite?

Amarjeet says, "Our staff has been personally trained to serve the customer's needs and make sure they are comfortable." About future goals, he adds, "In times to come more colors will be introduced as per the demand we get during our initial phase."

Of flowers & foliage
Satish Narula

In the plant kingdom, there are thousands of species of plants. The horticulturists have selected the ones that are ornamental and suitable to their region. Even within species there is tremendous choice due to variation in colour, texture and types. There are plants that are selected due to foliage beauty whereas others find favour due to their floral beauty. But there are those types that have both the plus points that is floral beauty and attractive foliage. Begonia offers a wide range of such plants.

Before we discuss about begonias, let us talk about some of the plants that are known for their foliage. Dracaena is one such plant. Therange is quite wide. The colour of foliage ranges from yellow to pink and almost red. Glaring example of these are song of India and

Mahatama. Whereas the former has variegated foliage, green with yellow margin the latter has the beauty of its deep pink foliage. Even in green, the dracaena has its own beauty. Some even consider it auspicious and keep it indoors. You can see 'lucky bamboo' in many a home. Yes, the so called Lucky Bamboo is nothing but a dracaena. It has nothing to do with bamboo or grass family.

Coleus is another one such species of plants that has its foliage value. There are different sized and coloured leaves found in this kind. The leaves may also be frilled but the flowers are insignificant. Begonia on the other hand is known for its foliage beauty and when it comes into flowering, it adds to the charm. The blooms may appear in singles or in bunches. The range in begonia is so wide that one could decorate the whole garden with various kinds of this species only. The colour range is also amazing. The begonias are used to be kept is group of plants to neutralize the all green effect.

Begonias are sensitive plants that have superficial hair like roots. It is therefore very important to take care of watering issues. Whereas it needs continous moisture uptake any stagnation could spell a doom for this species. For this the soil medium plays a very important role. It has to be very porous but at the same time it has a good retention of water. Drying of surface may cause wilt and drying. For this make the growing medium light but humus. For this use leaf mould, manure, vermin-compost and shreds of moss grass besides sand and soil. Propagation in begonias is easy and can be done by way of cuttings.

Renu Soni

Communication has never been easier and many of us are welcoming the option of working from home. A dedicated room with a door for privacy would be ideal. However, for those of us with limited space, finding an appropriate zone can be an issue. With careful planning, space can be manipulated to suit everyone's needs.

* In the living room: Same colour scheme and style of furniture helps an office to blend with the rest of the room. A desk can double up as a homework table and good storage means the room is kept clean.

* Under the stairs: A space often neglected and wasted can easily accommodate a desk and organised storage.

* In the dining area: Choose tall furniture with a fold-out desk for storage that complements the dining table and is a hideaway for stationery.

* In a room with tight space: Use a vertical space from wall to ceiling bookcases. A busy room would require sliding reflective shutters to conceal shelves and its contents.

* On a staircase landing: Why not make use of that natural light?

* Dividing a room: Using glass sliding doors provides privacy and light without the space looking closed in.

* In the bedroom: A slim desk and pretty accessories complement a personal space without imposing.

* As display: If your home office is only used for domestic administration, then dress it up with some of your favourite bits and pieces and show it off.

* Behind the couch: Remember to place the desk strategically so that it is not the first the thing you see as you walk in.

Now that you have decided where you want that home office; the next step is how you want it. Of course, shelves, storage and a desk are fundamental to any study or office. Flexible units and shelving which can adapt and grow within a space are best.

Basking in the glory of success

Urmila Sharma, who is currently essaying the role of Dhaisa in Diya Aur Bati Hum is on cloud 9 these days. She is happy with the success of her debut Bollywood film Raanjhaana, where she has essayed the role of Dhanush's mother. Besides, Urmila is endorsing her movie among her friends and family by calling and meeting them personally.

She has declared free tickets to all her kitty friends too. "It's like a dream come true to be a part of this film. It's my responsibility to talk about it and promote it, but at the same time, I am amazed with all the support I am getting from all my near and dear ones", says she.

Worth the weight

Ritesh Deshmukh, who is one of the most sought-after actor when it comes to comedy, always cracks jokes on Geeta Kapur's weight and Ashley lobo's Hindi. He also keeps everyone entertained with his crazy antics and pranks.

Recently, during the shoot of India's Dancing Superstar, the actor was in a fun mood and decided to give a challenge to Ravi Dubey, the anchor of the show, if he could lift Geeta Kapoor on stage. Ravi accepted the challenge but Geeta was a little iffy about whether he would be able to lift her up. Nevertheless, he convinced her and to her surprise he lifted her successfully.

Caught in the rumour mill

Iqbal Khan Iqbal Khan has been away from TV for quite some time. However, of late, he is rumoured to be considered for many shows. He talks about not being insecure about his career and clears the air.

There were rumours about you being offered a role in Mahabharat, but you turned it down. Why?

Yes, I was offered the role of Karan in Mahabharat but I could not do it. I refused it because the play was set in Gujarat and I did not want to stay away for so long. If it had been for a smaller duration, I might have considered taking it up.

Is it true that you are doing a film too?

There were many reports and rumours about this issue. People say I am doing a film, a show on Sony and even replacing Ronit Roy in Adalaat. There have been rumours that I have signed the show, Maharana Pratap, but please be informed that there is no truth in it.

Since there are so many rumours about you, doesn't that mean that you are in demand?

No, it means that someone is secretly doing my PR and spreading the word (he laughs!), but seriously, even I would like to be a part of the show that is interesting.

When you aren't working what occupies your time?

My one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I am with her, I don't even know how the time passes me by. With such young kids there is no time left to do anything else. Every moment with her is precious.

Do you feel insecure about your career?

No one can take away what is yours. It will come to you eventually. You have to be honest and willing to work hard to get work things out.
