2 killed in separate accidents
: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents in the district. Pardeep Kumar of Sagran died on the spot when an unknown vehicle hit his car near his hometown. In another incident, Pankaj Kumar of Terkiana died after being hit by a truck near a filling station in Mukerian. The truck driver, Lakhbir Singh of Hardokhundpur, has been booked.

Dismantling of bridge deferred
: The process to dismantle the pontoon bridge over the Beas near Sultanpur Lodhi has been deferred for a few days following a demand by villagers. The bridge is the only link between 14 villages and the mainland. The residents were seeking three days for sowing their fields across the river. A delegation of farmers had met former MLA and Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur and requested her to take up the issue with Deputy Commissioner DS Mangat.

Principals seek pending grants
: Members of the Principals' Association of Government-Aided Private Colleges (affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar) have expressed resentment over the non-release of pending salary grant of three quarters. Union general secretary Dharamjit Singh Parmar said they had not received grants for two quarters during the 2012-13 financial year and the first quarter of the current year.

3 youths held for raping minor
: Three teenaged youths allegedly gang-raped a minor girl at Shadipur village near Bilga. The police said the accused went to the victim's house in the absence of other family members, forcibly took her to an abandoned building and committed the crime. A post-mortem was conducted on the victim at the local Civil Hospital, which confirmed rape. The police has arrested the trio and shifted them to a juvenile home in Hoshiarpur.

Two bodies fished out from canal
: The police has recovered two unidentified bodies, one of them of a girl aged around 18 years, from different locations in the district. The girl's body was fished out from a canal at Dadehar Sahib village in Harike. Whether she was raped and then killed would only be known after the viscera examination, said Senior Superintendent of Police Rajjit Singh Hundal. In the second incident, the body of a man, in his thirties, was fished out from a canal at Padhri kalan village.

BILASPUR
Child falls from 2nd storey, dies
: Shivansh (4), son of Sanjiv Kumar of Mekhwin village in the Gehadwin area, near here, was injured seriously when he fell down from the second storey of his house on Saturday. Reports said the boy was playing with other children when he toppled over the railing and fell into the courtyard. He was rushed first to the local Primary Health Centre, then the Regional Hospital here and then to the PGI, Chandigarh. But he was declared brought dead by doctors there. Shivansh was the only son of his parents after two daughters. 

Jewellery, cash worth Rs 2.5 lakh stolen: Thieves stole jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh in two cases of robbery here on Sunday. Reports said Rama Kant Sankhyayan, a kiryana and cement store shopkeeper at Jukhala, near here, lost Rs 1.50 lakh, a gold coin and his mobile phone in a theft that took place when he had gone home to have lunch. In another case, Lata Devi of Matiyara village at Sarkaghat in Mandi district, claimed that she had lost jewellery worth more than Rs 1 lakh kept in a bag with Des Raj, a tailor at Kutheda bazaar. The police has registered cases in both the incidents.

Rs 25,783 aid for fire victims
: Workers of the local Rehri-Phadi Union have collected Rs 25,783 from residents and government officials for families of victims of a recent fire incident at the Kasakra Mohalla of Chamba town. Union president Rijhu Ram said here on Sunday that the collected amount would be distributed among the fire-affected families through the Deputy Commissioner of Chamba.

Six students suspended for hooliganism
: The Government Boys Senior Secondary School suspended six of its students for indulging in clashes and indiscipline here recently. A group of Class XII students, while roaming outside the school premises during school hours, threw chilly powder in a classmate’s eyes and thrashed him severely with a bicycle chain. The local SDM, who was crossing that area at that time, nabbed the troublemakers. The three students indulging in hooliganism were immediately suspended. Three other students were also suspended for creating indiscipline.

Seminar on Naxal menace held
: A seminar on tackling the growing Naxal menace in the country was held by the Strategic Studies Cell of the Kasauli Club here on Thursday. Shekhar Dutt, Governor, Chhattisgarh, delivered the keynote address and outlined the state government’s future response to meet the challenge. Defence Intelligence Agency Chief Lt Gen Kamal Davar, former IB Director Ajit Doval, former Central Army Commander Lt Gen VK Ahluwalia, Air Operations expert AVM Kapil Kak and Lt Gen A Bakshi, GOC 11 Corps, also addressed the gathering.
