Two arrested in connection with drug addict's murder

Chandigarh, June 21
The police has arrested two persons, Raju and Rajesh Kumar, residents of Maloya, in connection to Anoop Chauhan's (45) murder case. Anoop's body was found under mysterious circumstances in Sector 25.

The police has established that the victim had gone to buy drugs and had a fight with two persons known to him over sharing of drug.

Anoop, a drug addict,was a resident of Maloya. He was missing from his residence from June 15 and his body was found on June 18 from an old government building being used by wireless wing of Punjab in Sector 25.

Anoop's body had injury marks on head. A blood stained stone was also recovered from the spot. His postmortem was conducted at the General Hospital in Sector 16.

Woman accuses in-laws of illegal confinement, rape

Zirakpur, June 21
A married woman alleged that her in-laws family illegally confined her and raped her.

In her complaint, the victim, a resident of Chhat village alleged that her brother-in-law, Bobby, abducted her on February 22, 2013, and raped her in the room of a tubewell.

She further alleged that she was kept in the illegal confinement in the same room of the tubewell for four months.

She also alleged that some other persons also raped her during this period.

The victim further alleged that on June 18, she broke opened the lock of the room of that tubewell in which she was kidnapped for four months and freed herself.

She said that her another brother-in-law, father-in-law, and two other women entered her house and beat her up.

The police has registered a case against the accused following the complaint under Section 365, 376,342,323 and 506 of the IPC.

Youth held on charge of kidnapping, raping minor

The Operations Cell of the UT police today arrested a 21-year-old youth for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl. The police arrested Manoj, a resident of Ram Darbar, in a case under Sections 363, 366, 376 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The minor girl was kidnapped from her residence on May 23 and was missing ever since. Her parents had lodged a complaint with the Sector 31 police station and the case was transferred to the Operations Cell two days ago.

The police said Manoj frequently changed his location and spent all these days in Mansa Devi, Kalka and various districts of Punjab and Haryana along with the girl. He had exhausted his money and thus returned to the city today when the police arrested him.

The police said the accused was the girl’s neighbour and managed to convince her to go with him. He also raped her when the girl was in his confinement all these days. The medical examination of the girl was conducted and she was handed over to her parents in Ram Darbar. The accused will be produced in a court tomorrow.

Police registers case after 45 days

More than 45 days after a city resident was brutally assaulted and a bottle was smashed on his head, the police finally registered a case today only after the victim complained about it to Inspector General of Police RP Upahyaya during a public interaction in Daddu Majra yesterday.

Sushil Kumar, a resident of Burail, had complained to the IG that the police was dilly-dallying on registering a case even as he remained admitted to the PGI and received critical injuries.

Upon the IG’s intervention, the police registered a case of murder attempt against Jagpal and Rajinder Singh. The case was registered under Sections 323, 506, 341, 307, 34 of the IPC and two accused were arrested.

The police said Sushil was attacked with a cold drink bottle by Jagpal Singh and Rajinder Singh. The clash took place due to an old enmity.

Prisoner jumps parole, case registered

The UT police today registered a case against a prisoner, who failed to return from parole to serve his sentence in Burail. The case has been registered under Sections 8 and 9 of the Punjab Goods Conduct Prisoners Temporary Release Act.

Anil Kumar was convicted of rape and murder of a girl in 1996. He was released on parole for 28 days in June 2005, but he did not return till date.

CP win cricket cup

The Chandigarh Police (CP) defeated JW Marriott in an exciting final to clinch the trophy of the CII Corporate Cricket Cup, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry at DAV Public School, Sector 8, here today.

JW Marriott, while batting first, was bundled out for a paltry 119 in 18.5 overs. Shahbaz Khan batted well and topped the team’s score board with 34 runs off 23 balls. His innings included 2 towering sixes and three hits to the fence. Rohal Paliwal chipped in with 13 off 16 balls, including 2 fours.

From Chandigarh Police, Parminder bowled brilliantly and took 3 wickets yielding 28 runs in his 4 overs. Ramandeep and Jaswinder took 2 wickets each.

In reply, the Chandigarh Police batted brilliantly and achieved the target, scoring 123 at 4 wickets in 17.2 overs, with 6 wickets to spare, thereby, lifting the CII Corporate Cricket Cup for the second time in a row.

Ramandeep top scored with 33 runs off 38 balls, studded with 4 fours and a six while Satnam chipped in with a fine knock of 24 runs off 33 balls hitting 2 fours.

From JW Marriott, Anand Singh took 2 wickets yielding 6 runs in his 2 overs. Abhilash Menon and Prakash Jha picked up one wicket apiece.

RP Upadhyaya, IGP, and Alok Kumar, DIG, Chandigarh, presented trophies to the winning team.

Lawn tennis tourney from June 24

Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) is organising the CLTA-AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament for Boys and Girls Under-14 and Under-18 from June 24 to 28 at its academy in Sector 10 here.

The qualifying matches for this event will begin from tomorrow and last till June 23. The players from different states of India have come to participate in this tournament. The response for the sign-in was very good.

As many as 242 players have signed-in for qualifying event. Entries of boys U-14 and U-18 and girls U-14 and U-18 are 95, 94, 31 and 22, respectively.

Officials said the qualifying first round matches for boys and girls will be played at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Complex, Sector-10, Chandigarh and Lake Sports Complex, Sector 5, Chandigarh, at 9 am.

Tennis meet to begin today

Chandigarh, June 21
Total Tennis Academy is starting the Total Tennis Championship at British School, Sector 70, in Mohali from tomorrow.

This will be the fifth event organised by the academy. The matches will be played in the several categories including U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-18 for both, boys and girls. — TNS
