Canal breach floods 1000 acres in Faridkot village
Faridkot, June 16 After the canal department officials expressed their helplessness in plugging the breach, the followers of a religious dera in the area and the farmers joined hands in the evening today to control the gushing water. But the increasing level of canal water is still posing a threat to the fields and the local residents. Nirmal Singh Brar, executive engineer, canal and irrigation department, Faridkot, said the shortage of funds was the reason behind the delay in taking the remedial measures to plug the breach. "However, we are making sincere efforts," he said. Due to heavy rainfall in the last two days, there was an increase in the water level in the canal distributory, thus causing the breach, he said. It is quite startling that while some days back, the farmers of the area were complaining that their cotton plants were wilting under the blistering sun due to shortage of irrigation water, today they were facing floods which inundated their fields. Specialists shifted to Fazilka hospital fail to turn up
Fazilka, June 16 However, despite these orders, none of the specialist doctors have joined so far. Only a programme officer posted at the district headquarters here has joined. The efforts of Punjab Government to rationalise the post of doctors in the state had bought cheers for this border district headquarters, but their expectations have started diminishing as the government seems to have gone on the backfoot on the issue of mass transfer of doctors. The PCMS association has been opposing the mass transfers. Out of the total 13 sanctioned posts at the local Civil Hospital, eight have been lying vacant for long. To make up for the deficiency of the specialized service, Punjab government, in its recent orders, had transferred paediatrician Dr Ram Swaroop, TB and chest specialist Dr DP Godara, both from Abohar to Fazilka, radiologist Dr Neerja Gupta, from Abohar (for two days), dermatologist Dr Mandip Dhingra and psychiatrist Dr Gurmit Kaur, both from Faridkot, gynaecologist Dr Latika, (new appointment), Dr Rinku Bala from Hasta Kalan, general physician Dr Chander Mohan Kataria from Khui Khera and surgeon Dr Satpal Singh Bajwa were shifted from Khem Karan to Fazilka. "No one has joined so far," said Senior Medical Officer Dr SP Garg. Besides, Dr Harpreet Singh was posted as Assistant Civil Surgeon a month ago and Dr SK Parnami was transferred as District Family Planning officer at Fazilka district headquarters during the recent transfers. Only Dr Parnami has assumed charge. Significantly, a specialist doctor, who was recently transferred, said on the condition of anonymity, that he would try for cancellation of his transfer. If his request is not acceded to, he would proceed on leave or quit service but would not join at Fazilka on any condition. The sources pointed out that most doctors transferred to Fazilka are either from far-flung areas while others are not "keen" to be posted here. Some specialists who could be of better use for the benefit of the patients and were "keen" to be posted at the Civil Hospital, Fazilka, were not transferred. Raj Kishore Kalra, member, Rogi Kalyan Samit, Civil Hospital, Fazilka, demanded that all the vacancies of specialists doctors be filled up and the government should ensure that its orders are followed in verbatim in the interest of the poor patients. |

TDS content in sub-soil water rises in Muktsar villages
Muktsar, June 16 At three villages, Sangu Dhaun, Bariwala and Thandewala, the water supply and sanitation authorities have found the TDS level of purified water nearly 200 parts per million (ppm), which is otherwise set at less than 100 ppm after purification in RO water treatment plants. The residents of these villages had recently brought the matter to the notice of authorities concerned. The villagers had said that the water had gone salty and thereafter, the senior officials of the water supply and sanitation department had taken samples and conducted tests, which proved that the TDS level was almost double than what was required. Manish Kumar, a resident of Bariwala, said, “For the last 10 days, the water purified by the RO plant has gone salty. Either the water purification machine has developed a fault or the underground water has become more saline. In this situation, people have started bringing water from nearby villages because the water purified by the village’s RO plant is unfit for human consumption.” Yadwinder Singh, Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Division No. 1, Muktsar, said, “The TDS level of water being supplied through RO plants installed at Sangu Dhaun, Bariwala and Thandewala was found to be nearly 180 ppm, which is otherwise required to be around 100 ppm after the purification process.” “We have directed the officials of a private company running the RO water plants in these villages to change the existing membrane with an advanced one to purify the water and maintain its TDS level. It will come in the next few days and the problem will be resolved,” he said. He further said that the TDS level of raw water (before purification) in these villages was around 2,000-2,200 ppm and the department was also working to ascertain why the salinity had increased in the last few days. The officials of the water supply and sanitation department said they had also received a similar complaint from Bhagsar village, but the water was tested and found to be normal there. Fact file

Poll violence at Mann village
Muktsar, June 16 Sukha Singh and his wife Rani Kaur have been languishing in jail and in their absence, their children-- Reena (17), Manpreet Kaur (16), Sunita (14), Satbir (12), Mandeep (10) and Noordeep (6)-- have been braving the odds. To feed their siblings, the eldest of them, Rani Kaur and her brother Satbir, work in the fields, while the others stay at home to take care of each other. When a team of reporters went to their house, Manpreet Kaur, said two of her siblings had gone to work in the fields and a sister was working at a landlord’s house. “We are eagerly waiting for the release of our parents so that the life can be back on the track. We have gone thrice with our uncle to meet our parents in jail, but things will turn for the better only when they return home. We are not even aware whether our parents had any role in the violence or not,” she said. “Even though their uncle comes to stay with them at night, he also has to work in the fields and the kids remain alone during the day. They are too small to live without their parents,” said a neighbour. Meanwhile, Randhir Singh Khuddian, ex-president, District Youth Congress, said, “We had filed an application in the High Court seeking the bail of all 10 persons, yet the court rejected it. After a few days, we will again move a bail application.” Randhir said the condition of other families, whose members were arrested, was also the same. “But the overall situation in the village has returned to normal, as people have started working in their fields,” he added. It may be mentioned that about 150 people were booked by the Lambi police on May 19 and ten of them were arrested on a complaint filed by an Akali worker. |
