Police to visit Kolkata

Ludhiana, June 14
A day after the arrest of an Assam resident and the busting of a gang of swindlers allegedly involved in duping patients on the pretext of arranging kidney donors for them, the Sadar police is planning to visit Chandigarh and Kolkata for further investigation.

Sahnewal, Samrala to have urban estates

BJP councillor, husband booked
Ludhiana, June 14
The police has booked Renu Sharma, BJP councillor from Ward No. 29 in Deep Nagar, for allegedly contesting the elections by submitting fake documents. Her businessman husband Rajesh Sharma has also been booked.

Man gets jail for 6 months
Ludhiana, June 14
Judicial Magistrate Jagmilap Singh Khushdil has convicted Amit Aggarwal of Hapur (UP) in two cheque-bounce cases of Rs 1 lakh each. He has been ordered to undergo imprisonment for six months. The court has also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 2,500.

Governor visits city amid tight security
Ludhiana, June 14
The police was put on high alert during the visit of Governor Shivraj V Patil. The Governor was on a visit at a private function in a hotel on the Ferozepur road here this afternoon. The traffic police also set up checkpoints on the Ferozepur road and checked suspected commuters. After attending the two-hour long function, the Governor returned to Chandigarh in the evening. — TNS

Deluge: No lessons learnt by MC
Ludhiana, June 14
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation doesn't seem to have learnt any lessons from the past. During the first heavy rainfall of this season here yesterday, there was chaos in the entire city. Ludhiana had witnessed similar situation on August 13, 2011. Had the MC learnt lessons from the August 2011 rainfall, it would have geared up for the mnsoon.

Choked storm sewers to blame
Ludhiana, June 14
In the absence of a proper water recharging mechanism in the city, rainwater goes down drain and finally polluted Budha Nullah. Had the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation constructed water recharging wells in the city, it could have contributed to water recharging every time it rains. At present, the rainwater or other disposed water goes directly into sewer lines and from there into the Budha Nullah.

Anti-encroachment drive opposed in Dugri
Ludhiana, June 14
Tehbazaari wing of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation had to face opposition when they went to clear encroachments in the form of rehris from the Urban Estate, Dugri, Phase II area, of the city today evening. During the resistance, three persons, including an MC official, also received minor injuries.

Youth Cong holds protest; Harsh is district BJYM chief
Ludhiana, June 14
The youth brigade of both the national parties, the BJP and the Congress, was in action mode today. While the District Youth Congress staged a protest against the state government for "having failed to control the deteriorating law and order situation" in Punjab, the Yuva Morcha of the District BJP elected Harsh Sharma as its new president today.

Doctors asked to gear up for monsoon
Ludhiana, June 14
The Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Dr Subhash Batta, today asked the medical officers of the health department to pull up their socks for combating with monsoon weather. He asked the medical officers to visit their respective areas and communicate with the sanitary inspectors in case they come across problem of water seepage problem anywhere and employees of A 2 Z company for clearing the garbage dumps.

But in today's fast moving world very few senior citizens follow it. 1,649 appear for PAU entrance test

The Agriculture Aptitude Test-2013 was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today for admission to BSc-Agriculture (Hons), a six-year programme. Dr BS Sohal, Controller of Examination, PAU, said the entrance test received an overwhelming response and there was a huge rush of students from across the state.

500 girl cadets attend NSS training camp
Ludhiana: Col Ashwani Kumar, Commanding Officer 3 Punjab Girls Bn NCC, Ludhiana, gave a motivational talk to over 500 NCC Girl cadets of Ludhiana (covering more than 25 colleges and schools), attending the annual training camp, at GHG Khalsa College in Sudhar.

NASA trip
Ludhiana: GMT Public School organised a 10-day NASA trip for the students from June 4 to June 12. Principal of the school, Amarjit Dhaliwal, Aman Singla and 24 students from Classes VII to XII visited NASA. Students also visited Statue of Liberty, Orlando and Disneyland. Later, they visited Keneddy Space Centre, where a NASA Astronaut shared his adventure of the space with the students. The Management congratulated all the students for the successful trip.

20-year-old youth robbed of Rs 17,000 in bank
Ludhiana, June 14
Two armed assailants robbed a 20-year-old youth of Rs 17,000 at knife point and fled away. The incident happened at main branch of the State Bank of India located at Fountain Chowk here today.

Dowry case: Man gets remand
Mandi Gobindgarh, June 14
The Mandi Gobindgarh police has registered a dowry case of Jaswinder Kaur against her husband, Charanjit Singh. The investigating officer, ASI Kewal Singh, said Jaswinder Kaur got married to Charanjit Singh in 1980 and her husband used to beat her up and demand dowry frequently.
