Flesh trade racket busted

Dera Bassi police has busted a flesh-trade racket and arrested six accused persons, including two girls, during a raid conducted at the silver city flats.

The Dera Bassi police said that they had received a secret information and accordingly they conducted a raid at the silver city. The police further said that six persons including two girls were arrested in this connection and they would be produced n court for further action.

Rajputs demand ban on TV serial Jodha Akbar

Ambala, June 14
A delegation of Rajput community of Ambala submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, written to the Governor Haryana, in which the community had demanded a ban on Jodha Akbar serial, to be screened on Zee TV from June 18.

The Rajput leaders, Jitender Chauhan, Giyan Chand Adhoya and Rambir Chauhan led the delegation. It was said in the memorandum that the historical facts in the serial were twisted, which hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community. — OC

Awareness rally on blood donation held

Patiala, June 14
On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), Inder Kumar, president, Punjab Yuvak Chetna Manch, organised a mega awareness rally on blood donation in the city to create awareness among the people regarding voluntary blood donation. This was also to say thanks to those “unsung heroes” who are saving millions of lives by donating their blood.

The centre of attraction of this rally was its live displays regarding blood donation in different formats. One of its displays was showing how doctors need blood during operations, accidents, etc. Thalassemic children were appealing to the people to donate their blood.

A cavalcade of over 300 bikes along with a flock of especially chosen horses and camels carrying placards and balloons with motivational slogans on blood donation passed through the city. Professionals from different walks of life like doctors, nurses, advocates and businessmen also participated in this grand show for a noble cause.

Four RPF personnel booked

Ambala, June 14
The Ambala Cantt Sadar police has registered a case against four cops of Ambala Railway Protection Force (RPF) for extorting money from scrap dealers.

The scrap dealers had met the Commissioner of Police, Rajbir Deswal, in this regard and complained that some of the RPF personnel had threatened them for false implication also extorted Rs 35,000 from them. The Commissioner of Policedirected Ambala Cantt Sadar police to register a case against the accused RPF personnel. —OC

High Court stays eviction

Mohali, June 14
The ongoing work on the 200-foot airport highway has been delayed with Punjab and Haryana High Court directing Greater Mohali Area Development Authority to give at least 15 days’ time to the unauthorised settlers to shift to some alternative place.

The order was given by the Bench of Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain and Justice Paramjeet Singh on June 11, while disposing of the petition filed by residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Colony, Industrial Area, Phase VII.

On June 6, GMADA had given a 48-hour notice to the colony residents to vacate the area falling on a stretch where the road linking the airport with National Highway 21 has to be constructed.

The petition filed by around 65 residents stated that there were around 300 residents of semi-pucca as well as pucca houses in the colony. It stated that the petitioners were working in the industrial area as labourers and had been staying in the area for 12 to 15 years.

Teacher’s murder: Accused gets bail

Chandigarh, June 14
The court today granted bail to Vishal Goyal, one of the accused in the 32-year-old computer teacher Monika Goyal murder case.

Monika's brother-in-law Vishal was granted bail after paying a bond of Rs 75,000.

On October 15 last year, Monika Goyal was allegedly found hanging in her Sector 21 residence. Later, the police found that she was murdered and booked her husband and in-laws.

Monika's husband Vikas Goyal, father-in-law Gyan Parkash and mother-in-law Prem Lata are still behind the bars. The next hearing is scheduled for July 1.

Flour mill sealed

The enforcement staff of UT Estate Office today sealed the premises of Gopal Flour Mill in Sector 15. A team of enforcement staff descended on the premises this morning and sealed the mill. Officials said the action was taken after court disposed of a case pending against the mill owner.

Snatcher involved in 20 cases arrested

Chandigarh, June 14
With the arrest of one person, the crime branch of the Chandigarh police has claimed to have solved 20 cases of snatching and a case of vehicle theft.

The accused, Vicky, who was arrested on June 6, confessed to have committed snatchings in the city.

He hails from Buland Shahar in Uttar Pradesh.

He was nabbed from Centra Mall, Industrial Area, Phase I. He had stolen a motorcycle on April 14 from Shiv Shakti Mandir, Sector 30.

The police said the accused's accomplice, Suraj, was at large.

Vicky has 47 cases of snatching and theft registered against him at various police stations.

"Out of the 47 cases, he was convicted in 27 cases. He has jumped parole twice and is a proclaimed offender," said the police.

3 hurt in road accident

Three persons suffered injuries after their auto was hit by a Chandigarh police bus on the road separating Sectors 1 and 2 this afternoon.

The police said the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) Jawans were on the bus.

The injured have been identified as Sanjay Kumar, Inder Pal and Mani Ram, all residents of Maloya village.

They were rushed to a hospital. The bus was being driven by constable Ashish Kumar. The police is yet to record the statements of the injured. "The auto was overloaded with goods," said Assistant Sub Inspector Dilbar Singh. The police has started an inquiry.

Immigration firm owner held

Mohali, June 14
The Mohali police has arrested a man running an immigration company in th town on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

The accused, Amarpreet Singh, a resident of 
Sector 45, Chandigarh, who owns Seven Overseas, situated in Phase II here, had taken money from a Patiala resident for sending him abroad.

Hardeep Singh, a resident of Patiala district, complained to the Senior Superintendent of Police that Amarpreet Singh had allegedly taken Rs 8 lakh from him in lieu of sending him to New Zealand.

The accused, however, neither made the arrangements to send him abroad nor returned the money, he told the police

A case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and Section 24 of the Immigration Act has been registered against the accused.

Amarpreet Singh was produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Shiv Mohan Garg today which sent him to three-day police custody.

Cricket trials in Mohali today

The Mohali Cricket Association (MCA) will conduct the selection trials to pick the senior cricket team of boys, on June 15 (7 am) in the B-ground of the MCA.

The selected players will represent the district in the Inter-District Senior Tournament for Katoch Shield being organised by the Punjab Cricket Association.

Players born, residing or studying in Mohali will be eligible to participate in the trials.
