Anti-Malaria Month observed
Dera Bassi, June 5 Dr Multani said high-grade fever with shivering was one of the major symptoms of malaria fever. He said blood should be tested on time. Water should not be allowed to accumulate in low-lying areas. He suggested sprinkling of tractor oil on the stagnant water to prevent flourishing of mosquitoes. He said from June to October, when malaria occurrence is highest, people should use nets and repellants. Dr Multani said government hospitals were well equipped with diagnostic and free treatment facilities. |

Three-fourths of candidates lose security deposit

Ambala, June 5 Out of 180 candidates, as many as 125 candidates failed to get the minimum number of votes required to claim the security, i.e. one-eighth of the total valid votes polled in their ward. Besides independent candidates, several BJP, INLD and Congress-supported candidates also lost their security deposit. The BJP candidates who contested elections from ward numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 19; and INLD candidates from ward numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20 lost their security deposit. Two Congress-supported candidates also lost their security. In ward number 3, out of 15 contestants, 13 lost their security deposit. Similarly, in ward number 13, as many as 12 candidates lost their deposit. |

Man acquitted of rape charge
Chandigarh, June 5 Father of a five-year-old son, Inderjeet (30) and resident of Mundi Kharar, was arrested by the police in December 2012. He has been acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. As per the prosecution the victim had joined a private institute for computer course where Inderjeet was teaching. Maid’s body found hanging
Panchkula, June 5 The victim resided in a slum at Sector 11. Her body was found hanging in a room of house number 817. She was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, where the doctors declared her brought dead. Victim’s father, Lal Bahadur, alleged that his daughter was killed by her employers. Panchkula Police Commissioner Rajbir Deswal said investigations were on in the case. “Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide. As the father of the victim has alleged foul play, we are also looking at other angles,” he said Deswal. No suicide note was found at the spot, he said. Victim’s relatives and other slum dwellers blocked traffic on the road separating Sectors 11 and 14 for an hour. They were demanding immediate legal action against the victim’s employers. The agitated crowd also tried to gherao the house from where the body was recovered. “We have provided security in front of the house, at the hospital where the body is kept, and in the slum area to avoid any untoward incident,” said Deswal. Owners of the house refused to comment on the incident. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow. |

INLD candidate booked for thrashing 5

Panchkula, June 5 The accused, Subhash Nishad, and his supporters allegedly thrashed them as they did not support him during the polls, said Rajesh Kumar, a rival independent candidate from Ward No. 13, and Munni Devi, one of the victims. The police, however, said Nishad and his supporters thrashed the victims as they had failed to return a vehicle used during the polls. Munni Devi, was admitted to General Hospital, Sector 6, with injuries on her stomach and chest. Jaggi and Tej Bahadur, were released after administering first aid. The other two victims, Harinder Arora and Keshav Verma, too, were allegedly slapped and kicked by Nishad’s supporters. |

For bowling side, Aakash hogged the limelight by claiming 7 wickets off 50 runs while Sahil took 1 wicket by giving away 36 runs. Later, the Partap Cricket Academy achieved the target with 4 balls remaining. IPL player Gurkeerat Mann opened the team's innings and posted 47 runs off 30 balls while his counterpart Puneet Bisht scored 50 runs off 31 balls studded with 8 boundaries and a six. Another former IPL player Sarul Kanwar failed to make any contribution while Shivam Sharma (2 runs), Sharad Loomba (2 runs), Amit Unyal (16 runs), Naved Hussain (11 runs), Vinay Chaudhary (91 run), Babloo Kumar (6 runs) and Ranjit Bajaj ( 7 runs) were the other main scorers for the team. Hosts BECC win cricket tourney
Patiala, June 5 Major General DR Soni, General Officer, Commanding 1 Armed Division, was the chief guest during the prize distribution ceremony. Senior SAD leader from Patiala, Ajay Thapar, also met the team members and promised a financial help from the club. The BECC won the toss and elected to field first. The Delhi boys made the most of it and scored 183 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the stipulated 40 overs. Angad Khanna once again played a super knock of 96 runs with the help of 12 boundaries and a six. He was well supported by Deevash (19) and Likhit (18 not out). The DCF started their inning in a solid manner and added 57 runs for first wicket that helped them chase the target in 35 overs. Ibadat (55), Saurav (54) and Jagjit Dass (31) were the main contributors for the DCF. Angad Khanna of DCF was adjudged the man of the match while best batsman trophy went to Jaish Jain of LDCA, Ludhiana. Beating odds, washerman’s daughter brings laurels

The junior level international handball player, recently, cleared her higher secondary class and is willing to achieve laurels in academics along with a bright sports career. “I am happy to clear my examination. Although I scored an average percentile but I am satisfied with my score,” said Kiran. In December, she got selected in the South-Asia ISF Handball Championship and the team achieved first place at Kathmandu. Within a gap of two months, she prepared for her higher secondary exam and in April went to Uzbekistan to play The Inter-Continental Handball Cup. Before sitting for her exam, she participated in two national tournaments and few local tournaments, giving herself a less time than other students to prepare for her Class 12 examination. “It’s been a hectic year and balancing everything from studies to regular practice session remained a difficult task to handle. My sincere effort and support from my family helped me to overshadow this burden. In the end, the year brought some good news for me,” said Kiran. While discussing her future plans, she said, “I would like to excel in academics. I am planning to go for arts stream so to keep my career options are vast and i can dedicate good time towards my game.” Her father is a washer man, who is running his business from Sector 43. “My father (Anil Kumar) and my brother has helped me through out. My mother is a housewife and she takes care of my diet. I dedicate my early mornings and evenings at the handball coaching centre of Sector 42,” said Kiran. Her father, Anil, said: “I am happy that her efforts are making me and other family members proud.” “She is a bright student and hats off to her family who is supporting her throughout. She is a bright student and will shine in future,” said Iqbal Singh, her coach. |
3 city lads to represent nation in Asian wrestling championship
Chandigarh, June 5 According to the general secretary of local wrestling association, Darshan Lal, wrestlers, Navneet (120 kg freestyle), Nitin (50 kg Greco-Roman) and Parveen Dagar (96 kg Greco-Roman), have been selected for the Asian summit. Lal, who is also senior wrestling coach of the Chandigarh Sports Department, said that the players have been selected on the basis of their performance in the probable’s camp. Earlier, the players were selected via probable’s camp held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Center, Sonipat. The international tournament will witness men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman in 50 kg, 55 kg, 60 kg, 66 kg, 74 kg, 84 kg, 96 kg and 120 kg and women’s freestyle in 44 kg, 48kg, 59 kg, 63 kg, 67 kg and 72 kg. Three wrestlers from Gulzar Wrestling Akhara, Zirakpur, have also made to the final list of the same international tournament. Santosh Kumar Yadav (50 kg), Prabhpal Singh (84 kg) and Gurpreet Singh(74 kg) have been selected in the final squad. |
