Fashion writer Shefali Vasudev, who dedicated a complete chapter to Ludhiana in her book Powder Room, says the city is as vibrant as it can get…
Poonam Bindra

Lifestyle writing was her forte, but when Shefali Vasudev, former editor of Marie Claire, dived deep down into the gagging depths of Indian fashion, she chronicled it all into a book, Powder Room, which was quite in news.

‘She offers an insider’s view of people who made the industry what it is – from a lower middle class girl who sells global luxury for a living, a designer who fights the inner demons of sexual abuse yet manages to survive and thrive in the business of fashion to a Ludhiana housewife on a perpetual fashion high’ — reads the inner cover of Powder Room. From traversing sleazy areas with open drains to meeting designers like Rakesh Aggarwal to an interaction with the likes of Tarun Tahilani and detailing the use and misuse of genuine Indian textiles and, of course, the scene behind the fashion shows, Shefali has covered it all in the chapters of her book.

For the rich and famous ladies of Ludhiana, this book has a special interest for one whole chapter is devoted to the uber fashionistas of the city whose lifestyle and dressing up has left a mark of its own! Recently, Shefali was in Ludhiana on the invitation of the newly opened café cum Pub, ‘Frog Prince’, for a tete-a-tete with some guests at a special evening. After an interactive reading session, there were people who wanted to know why she devoted one whole chapter to Ludhiana? “I was here to study some gender-related issues when I visited a few places and was quite wonder-struck by the well-turned-out damsels, branded from top to toe and bejewelled with choicest diamonds, so I had to write about Ludhiana! It did not matter whether they were just meeting friends for a morning cup of coffee or an evening tea or just shopping down Ghumar Mandi, they all seemed to step straight out of a fashion magazine,” she quips. She adds that even the gym-wear had a lot of oomph!

Shefali also inaugurated a book corner with the “take one leave one” theme and later again expressed happiness at the warm reception she was given. “I am just over-awed; this trend is just a manifestation of how the city has evolved over the years,” she shares.

Bright & Sunny
Amarjot Kaur

While the red-hot molten summer sun drowned on the horizon of the clear crimson sky, the typical city evening found an unusual respite in the company of a star who exuded much charm. You have seen him fight the Pakistani army with a hand-pump in Gadar Ek Prem Katha and you sure remember his Dhai kilo ka haath. Yes we are talking about Sunny Deol, who was in Chandigarh to promote his film Yamla Pagla Deewana 2.

“My character in the film Paramveer, is similar to the one in the prequel of YPD series,” says Sunny.

The basic script of the film has been penned down by Sunny’s wife Pooja, who he gives due credit. “Pooja is from the UK, so she understands the Punjabi culture there and our writer, Jaswinder Singh, has also worked well with the dialogues. Over ninety per cent of the film has been shot in the UK,” he smiles. When questioned about his stance on working with younger heroines, Sunny opines, “Acting has nothing to do with age; we portray characters and if you ask me, I don’t think I’m old!”

Like father like son

Sunny brushes aside all the rumours about his son, Karan, being launched under the Yash Raj Banner as he shares, “Both my sons are keen on acting and Karan decided to act soon after he got done with his 12th grade. Currently, he is pursuing his acting course in London, just like I did.” While Dharmendra never took his sons along with him to the sets, Sunny chooses to take Karan along with him everytime he is shooting, “When I was Karan’s age, I was very shy and I went to London to seek refuge from the hoopla that comes along with being an actor’s son. As for Karan, he is doing quite fine and we are planning to launch him under Vijita Banner in a year’s time,” he says.

Future perfect

The Ghayal 2 project has been in the pipeline for a while now and Sunny makes no pretence while expressing high hopes from the film, “Ghayal is definitely going to happen and this time we are planning to take the intensity of this film a notch higher. I’m planning to launch the film next summer,” he says. Sunny is also excited about his upcoming films Singh Saab The Great and I Love New Year.

Punjabi appeal

Sunny is keen on working in a Punjabi film and already in talks with the director, Manmohan Singh, “I have spoken to Manmohan and as soon as I find a meaningful script, I would love to act in a Punjabi film. In fact, dad and I are also planning on something,” he says.

Fitness mantra
Sunny shares that often during his lunch breaks, he would go to a badminton court and play, “I was always into sports and its important to be fit rather than just looking good. So instead of taking health supplements, I advocate yoga and outdoor games. Also, I abstain from drinking, smoking or partying till late to maintain a good health regime,”says the man with the dhai kilo ka haath!

Doc Talk
Hair-raising issue
Dr Rohit Bansal

Unwanted hair on chin, face and chest can cause inferiority complex in a woman. One tries to get rid of these by traditional means like waxing, threading, tweezing etc. But these methods are not beneficial as most women end up damaging their skin with pigmentation. So, here comes the option of laser. Although it does not make all unwanted hair disappear, it does help us to get rid of this curse called Hirsutism.

Problem of plenty

Hirsutism is the presence of thick and dark hair on androgen dependent area i.e. face, chest and upper abdomen; which is a cause of distress for women.

Hirsutism is idiopatic in 50 per cent cases. In 30 per cent cases it is due to polycystic ovaries, in 8 per cent it is due to thyroid imbalance and rest can be due to other hormonal disturbances. It should be managed and should be treated in a right way which includes investigation to rule out the cause. Depending upon the cause, medical treatment should be advised and should be treated rather than waiting to get it cured on its own.

Then comes laser hair reduction which is the most efficient method for long term hair reduction currently available. Laser causes permanent hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal as wrongly claimed. There is a noticeable hair reduction in hair growth and the re-grown hair is thinner and lighter in colour due to miniaturisation of hair follicles.

Help at hand

There are various hair reduction systems available worldwide-- Diode laser 800 nm, long pulsed ND yag 1064 nm, intense pulsed light (550 - 1200 nm), ruby laser 694 nm. The efficacy and safety of each of these varies depending on the patient's skin and hair type and hormonal status. Laser hair reduction gives 50 to 60 per cent permanency with prolonged hair removal. It is having fewer side effects, faster result with less discomfort. Larger area can be treated in one session. It needs multiple treatment session and is not effective for grey and white hair.

The right choice
Regardless of the type of laser used, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve result. No system can provide fully predictable result. Although there is no obvious advantage of one laser over another in terms of treatment outcome, laser parameters may be important when choosing the ideal laser for a particular patient.
However there is still a need to achieve permanent and complete hair removal for all skin and hair types.

Par Excellence
A quick warm up
Jesse Grewal

A good start to the round sets the foundation to a good score. This is normally possible when you are able to swing freely and well at the start which in turn is created by a good warm up before teeing off.

Warming up also prevents injuries and allows you to play more golf through the year.

The warm up could be divided into two parts. One is to improve the range of motion by doing stretch exercise well before the round. These could be done at home on a mat. The other is to do a quick dynamic warm up just before teeing off. Some golfers like to first hit a few balls at the range and then work on the short game and practice putting just before teeing off. They believe that they need to establish the feel for the greens just before starting to putt well. The other school of thought is that one should putt first and then go to the range to warm up and go to the first tee straight from the range.

This would be better for the swing as the body does not cool down before the tee off and id dynamically. If you prefer to putt just before teeing off, you would need to warm up again before hitting a driver as one needs explosive power to hit the ball far. Without a warm up you would be at a risk of injury on your first shot. Do these quick drills. Keep your arms extended by your side with the thumbs up and rotate the arms from the shoulders making small circles, then medium circles and finally big circles (pictures 1, 2 and 3). Repeat this with the thumbs pointing in front and then own wards. This would warm up the shoulder muscles.

Another exercise is called the helicopter. Stand upright and hold your arms by your side. Now, turn the body around the spine so that the arms move around the body like the propeller of the helicopter (picture 4). This would warm up the thoracic spine. Then kick your right leg upwards and across your body towards the left hand (picture 5). Repeat this with the other leg. This would warm up the core, glutes and legs. This quick warm up would help you get a head start to your round.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Coping up with mood swings
Simmi Waraich

My daughter has a lot of mood swings. She is 16 years old. She took an overdose of sleeping pills after she had a fight with a friend. She is an only child. I am a housewife and spend a lot of time with her but she doesn't talk to me much. She threatens to leave or die if we stop her from doing things. We have few friends as my husband remains busy. She used to be okay- just more shy than others and very attached to me when she was younger. She was diagnosed as borderline p d or bipolar depression.

— Amanpreet, Chandigarh

Some people have a problem with regulating their emotions. They may have a mood disorder or borderline personality disorder. For family or friends, it can be difficult to deal with the changing emotions. One needs to separate the disorder from the person.

Family members need to have good self esteem and be able to face criticism and irritability directed at them without reacting too much. For this they need to have other interests and stay calm through thick or thin. First don't react, second don't explain. A borderline person feels they are being blamed and become defensive. You don't have to agree with them but just validate their feelings. For instance, "you are upset because of what your friend said to you in front of the others."

However, let them know you don't agree with them if they start shouting at you and tell them that you need to set another time to discuss it. So stay calm, take out time for yourself, remember you are there for her but can't be there all the time. Learn how to validate her feelings. You do need to set boundaries and need to have a plan with the doctor in case she is feeling suicidal again. Build up a support system for yourself and her.

Can gastric upset be a cause of depression? I have had many tests but the doctor put me on an antidepressant.

— Harish, Chandigarh

Many medical specialists and general practitioners do prescribe antidepressants when they feel that a person may be having symptoms such as chronic stomach problems with no tests showing any abnormailities or in cases of chronic headaches etc. Stomach upset may occur due to stress hormones such as adrenaline, and there are also serotonin receptors in the gut. Also stress increases acid formation and a person can develop acidity or ulcers. Irritable bowel syndrome is also related to stress.

Doing relaxation exercises daily helps by sending a signal to the brain that your body is now relaxed and switching off the stress related hormones.

Place one hand on your abdomen, palm above your belly button. Place your other hand on your chest. Inhale slowly as you count to five. Think the word "relax" as you exhale to the count of seven. Relax your stomach muscles, shoulders, jaws, forehead. Focus on the action of your diaphragm. Your hand should move outward as you fill your lungs with air and move inward as you exhale.

Thinking the word "relax" as you exhale, turns the word into a cue, prompting your brain to induce a state of relaxation throughout your body.

Master Chef
Grill them right, grill them light!
Kandla Nijhowne

Hot food and hot weather don't go hand in hand, but you've gotta hand it to me here.....a lightly grilled sandwich, filled with crunchy fresh greens, a drizzle of tangy dressing and some protein is a refreshing change from piping hot daal and puffed up steamy rotis! Anything with melted cheese spewing out on the plate amounts to Paradise on my palate!

Don't feel guilty about consuming small portions of cheese. It provides you with a much needed input of protein and vitamin A, apart from a wondrous sharp kick to any meal! If you want a fresh option, omit the grilling procedure altogether and enjoy the soft, moist sandwich as is. An electric grill does lend those fancy grill-marks to the end product but you can do without them too. Simply pan fry the prepared sandwiches on a flat pan, using minimal fat.

Ingredients
4 slices fresh bread of your choice
3-4 tbsp butter
2 slices cheese
½ red bell pepper
2 tbsp mayonnaise
3-4 tbsp shredded iceberg lettuce
2 tbsp mango chutney (optional)
1 medium sized ripe tomato
1 tbsp pickled gherkin (optional)
1 tbsp sliced jalapeno (optional)
Salt, pepper and mustard to taste

Method
Thinly slice the tomato and capsicum.
Trim the crusts of the bread slices.
Keep a moistened muslin cloth ready to receive the sandwiches.
Make a paste of a spoonful of mustard powder and a little warm water.
To make two sandwiches, butter one side of each, and spread mayonnaise on the other.
Reserve some butter for later, for grilling.
Pre-heat the grill or the fry pan.
Spread the mango chutney on one side, smear mustard over it and arrange the cheese slice.
Scatter the red bell pepper, tomatoes, pickle, jalapeno and lettuce over it.
Sprinkle salt and pepper, then fold over the other bread slice.
Sparingly butter the outer surfaces.
Grill lightly till the bread looks golden and the cheese begins to ooze out.
Serve hot with ketchup or chutney. A milk shake as an accompaniment would help !
Note: Try other combinations like cooked chicken, crumbled paneer, scrambled eggs, flaked fish, blanched spinach.

Vidya Balan plays a wacky and over-the-top Punjabi wife in her forthcoming film Ghanchakkar

Vidya Balan Roy Kapur's first release after marriage is Ghanchakkar in which she plays a wacky and over-the-top Punjabi wife of a conman, played by Emraan Hashmi. She talks about the film and more.

Kitty parties

Newly married women love getting together at kitty parties and b**** about their husbands. I overheard this when I was at a restaurant. I am completely enjoying my newly married life and I love my new family too. I do not want to complaint about myVidya Balan husband. I am very happy. Everybody in the family is in films now.

Lazy lad

This is a fun promotional song about lazy boys. All men are couch potatoes and it shows their procrastination, short attention span, messiness and other habits that annoy women. Watching a guy sit in front of the television and change channels can be frustrating. If a cricket match is on, then women do not exist. So, the song shows this equation between husband and wife.

Wacky & fun

I am happy I did this movie and that it is my first release after marriage. I had fun playing this character and it is my first out-and-out comedy which is a good break after the intense roles I have done in the past few years. This is a wacky and unique comic caper.

Manisha wants to write

Contrary to reports that Manisha Koirala would immediately complete her pending film assignment when she returns to India by the end of June, she intends to devote her time penning down her experiences of the past six months when her life fell apart and then came together again. Though now in good health, Manisha would be taking it very easy as far as getting back to the studios is concerned.

Manisha KoiralaA close friend of Manisha's says, "Manisha's body is healing slowly and steadily. She won't be allowed to risk infections by going into the public domain excessively. Once she returns to India in the last week of June or the first week of July she would spend her time at home writing about her experience during the illness and recovery. She wants her own experiences to help others in a health crisis."

"Manisha has no idea why newspapers in India are carrying reports that she's to resume acting work as soon as she returns. She can't do that. She isn't allowed to! Anupam finds ‘bouncer culture’ funny

The trend of bouncers surrounding celebrities when they make a public appearance is a 'funny' concept, says Anupam Kher and adds that they "deprive you of love and warmth from people". The 58-year-old was performing his autobiographical play Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai in the Capital and he was surrounded by a couple of security people for his protection.

"At Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai show, I encountered the culture of bouncers closely.Anupam kher They were for my safety. Felt claustrophobic," Anupam posted on Twitter Sunday. However, Anupam, who has acted in over 400 movies in Bollywood, finds the idea of providing security to celebrities uncalled for and feels that it stops fans from showering their warmth.

"Bouncers protecting 'so called' celebrities is a funny concept in India. The only thing it does is to give a false sense of importance," he wrote. "Bouncers deprive you of love and warmth from people. Also, I find it extremely comical," added Anupam who has two movies lined up for release— Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 and Gang Of Ghosts. — IANS

Gearing up for action
Siddharth Malhotra will be 'fast and furious' in his next film

Bollywood newcomer Siddharth Malhotra will be next seen in an action movie, which is on the lines of Hollywood hit Fast and the Furious. Siddharth made his acting debut with Karan Johar-directed Student of the Year (2012). The 28-year-old's untitled action flick, backed by his mentor Karan, is to be directed by Remo D'Souza.

"We have Siddharth Malhotra in an action film. It is about cars. I don't think we have seen a car film till date in India. I am trying to get that culture here. I hope to bring new kind of films here. It is on the lines of Fast and Furious," Remo said. Though theSiddharth Malhotra movie gives the impression of having an international flavour, the choreographer-turned-director insisted it has desi content. "It is a beautiful story about two brothers and cars. We will have another hero as well," Remo said, without divulging further details. The makers are yet to finalise the second hero. "We do have some actors on the list that I have given to Karan Johar. He will see it and then we will decide. The leading lady will be a new girl," the choreographer-director said. Freida’s plan for girl child

Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto, the global ambassador of the Because I am A Girl Campaign (BIAAG), visited Ethiopia for the first time as part of her role to support Plan International's projects. She says educating and empowering girls is the way forward worldwide.

Launched October 11, 2012, it aims to create sustainable projects in developing countries to give girls access to clean water, food, health care, education and protection from violence and exploitation. "If we educate and empower girls, they will reach their fullest potential, pulling themselves and their families out of every problem they might possibly face" said Freida.

"I am truly inspired by the determination and courage of the girls I have met in the places I have visited in Ethiopia," she added. The actress, known for her role as Latika in Danny Boyle's 2008 Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, stayed there for three days and visited the projects that have been undertaken in different areas, including Addis Ababa as well as in Shebedino District, Leko City of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR).

Freida was impressed by Plan Ethiopia's efforts in bringing a lasting change to the lives of children in the country. She also visited schools where she interacted with students and teachers as well as discussed the programmes and projects that are undertaken by women with the support of Plan Ethiopia, where she met young and adults who are involved in so many projects.

Born in October 18, 1984, to a Mangalorean Catholic family, it was her greatest desire to address issues that have not been given attentions to. She was involved in children's choirs, and groups helping children from non-well to do families and so on.

She was the only Indian actress to join tennis stars Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf in support of their humanitarian organisation - Agassi Foundation, in their annual fund raiser titled, the '15th Grand Slam for Children', aimed at raising funds for the education of under-privileged children.

In 2013, Freida appeared in a video clip for Gucci's Chime for Change campaign to raise funds and awareness of women's issues in terms of education, health and justice. In April 2013, the actress collaborated with UN Secretary-General BanFrieda Pinto Ki-Moon, and World Bank president Jim Yong Kim for the Call to Action-Girl Raising Campaign representing Plan.

It is her interest in supporting children as well as girls that made her the ambassador since July 2012. She voices, advocates, and lobbies about girls concerns on international forums.

Actor Anil Kapoor, who also starred in "Slumdog Millionaire", is an ambassador for Plan India. He donated his entire fee from the movie to the NGOs universal Birth Registration campaign. I play Ishwar Sharma, a young politician and the son of an ex-MLA. It is a very challenging character and I will give 100 per cent to this show.

From a judge’s eye

Karan Johar is eagerly looking forward to the new season of Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa. He is expecting great performances and lots of entertainment. We catch up

This is your third show as a judge. What do you find exciting about judging?

It is fun and challenging. We have to be critical about judging, as the contestants take us very seriously. They take our comments to the heart and come back week after week. It is not as easy a job as it seems. We have to notice everything — from their progress to their last performances. I love Jhalak and I wouldn’t do anything do half-heartedly

What do you think of the contestants?

Lauren is an excellent dancer while we will have to judge Suresh Menon differently. While one will have talent other will have entertainment value. Each contestant has an advantage and disadvantage.

You get along really well with the co- judges, right?

Yes. Remo, Madhuri and I work well together as all of us care enough about the show. I love Jhalak and we all care a lot about the show. I wouldn’t do something that I don’t love or enjoy.

Karan JoharCan we expect a film with Madhuri soon after the song you did with her in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani?

Well, I hope to work with her in the near future.

Do we see you making a TV show ever?

No. I don’t understand the medium. I can judge or host but not produce a fictional show. There are many things one has to look into and I am not looking at that.
