Patiala hit by water shortage
Patiala, May 23 Over a dozen localities in the royal city are facing shortage of water. As per estimates, the water supply has been decreased from five hours a day to an hour. “Everyday we read that the ground water in Punjab is getting contaminated but ironically, shortage of water has left us no other option”, said RK Bansal, a resident of Ghumman Colony. Even the last summers, we had the same problem the MC authorities had claimed to solve the problem in a few months, but nothing has been done so far. In Patiala, ground water is the only source of water supply and the civic body has installed tube wells in different parts of the city. The water is taken out through pumps and later supplied after the chlorination process. According to the city residents, the areas of Ghumman Nagar, Seak Colony, Desi Mehmandari, Punjabi Bagh, Lehal Colony, Model Town, Officers Colony, Chotti Baradari, areas inside the walled city, New Lal Bagh, Guru Nanak Nagar, Tripuri and some other colonies are facing shortage and irregular water supply. While the common man is suffering, those who can afford have already dug their personal submersible pumps to meet their daily water needs. Confirming that the water supply had been hit due to the falling water table, Patiala MC Commissioner Gurlovleen Singh Sidhu told The Tribune that process to dig over a dozen new tube wells had been started. “Until we make some new arrangements, the city residents will face some inconvenience”, he stated. Sample this: Out of 130 tube wells 15 are out of order, whereas, the tender process to install 15 more has recently been completed. “We will surely get enough water supply once the new tube wells get going”, said SDO (Water Supplies) Suresh Kumar. Accepting some lapses, Patiala Mayor Amarinder Bajaj said that the problem had been pending for the last few years, but due to the paucity of funds, the problem could not be resolved till date. “However, now we are determined to initiate steps and solve the problem of drinking water at the earliest. Till then the city residents will have to bear the brunt of water scarcity”, he added. |
