Patiala students make YPS proud in Class X, XII exams

Students of Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, have made the institute proud by excelling in the ISC and ICSE examinations, results for which were declared recently. Sehajbir Singh Uppal of the science stream has topped in the school in the Class XII examination of the ISC, scoring 97.75 per cent marks. Chahat of the arts stream stood second with 97.25 per cent marks. Two years back, she had bagged the same position in the Class X examination of the ICSE.

Chahat attributed her success to the international exposure she got during a six-month student exchange visit to Japan in 2011. For Sehajbir, hard work and an inspiring visit to the NASA Space Centre in Florida last year helped in excelling in the exam. The toppers thanked the school faculty for inspiring them to reach such great heights.

Harpinder Singh and Navi Joshi, both science students, shared the third position, scoring 96.75 per cent marks.

‘Thrilled to have lived up to my parents’ expectations’

In the commerce stream, Asvin Malhotra emerged as the overall topper in the region in his stream, with a total of 96.25 per cent marks. Aiming to join the civil services, Asvin gave credit for his success to his family. “They never questioned my decisions, and I am thrilled to have lived up to their expectations,” said Asvin.

Service to mankind is service to God and the Mehar Baba Charitable Trust, Bassi Pathana, is serving the humanity by offering free of cost medical, educational, professional, vocational and sports services to the unemployed youths.

The NGOs should take inspiration from the Trust and also extend their base in the field of selfless social service, said Justice Nirmal Singh (retd), MLA, Bassi Pathana, while addressing a function organised by the Trust at Bassi Pathana.

The MLA also distributed certificates among 34 youngsters, who completed their training at the BR Institute of Hotel Management, Chandigarh.

The Trust selects youths from the 150 villages of Fatehgarh Sahib adopted by it to impart training in various vocational and professional courses. More than 500 students had been imparted training at leading institutes free of cost by the Trust.

Addressing the gathering Bharti Tayagi, principal, BR Institute of Hotel Management, appreciated the efforts of the Trust.

27 candidates file nominations

As many as 27 candidates today filed their nominations from Kalka, Pinjore Zone, on the penultimate day for the elections to the Panchkula Municipal Corporation scheduled to be held on June 2. Manita Malik, SDM-cum-assistant returning officer of ward numbers 1, 2 and 3, said Sunil Kumar had filed his nominations from ward number 1, while Ghanshyam, Sucha Ram, Ashok Kumar Kuku, Ashok Kumar and Sangat Singh Nanda had filed their nominations from ward number 2. Surjit Kaur and Harpreet Kaur had filed their nominations from ward number 3.

Raj Kumar Sharma, BDPO-cum-assistant returning officer of ward numbers 4, 5 and 6 of the Pinjore Zone, said Kesar Singh, Gurcharan Dhiman, Satinder Singh Toni, Gurdev Singh, Gurbhag Singh, Parkash Singh, Bhim Singh, and Sucha Singh had filed their nominations from ward number 4.

He said Gafur Mohammed, Bhaga Ram, Raj Kumar Sharma, Krishan Lal Lamba, Sant kumar and Navdeep Sharma had filed their nominations from ward number 5.

Monica Chaudhary, Neetu Devi, Simaranjit Kaur, Mamta Rani, Sarvjeet Kaur had filed their nominations from ward number 6.

The last day for filing nominations is May 21 and the scrutiny of the forms would be conducted on May 22 in the SDM’s office, Panchkula.

Counting of votes today

The counting of votes of the Block Samiti and Zila Parisad elections will begin at 8 am here tomorrow. All arrangements have been completed at Government College, Dera Bassi, for this purpose. Nearly 75 employees have been deputed and 16 tables have been set up for the counting of votes.

Inderjeet Kaur Kang, returning officer-cum-SDM, said nearly three employees would count the votes on every table.

Mohali coloniser penalised
Told to pay compensation of Rs 50 lakh to complainant

Deficiency in service cost dear to a local coloniser, JTPL, as it has been directed by the Mohali District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to one of its clients for mental tension and harassment.

Apart from that, the forum has also ordered the defaulter to pay Rs one lakh compensation to complainant Balraj Singh Mann for the necessary repairs in his flat, which was purchased from JTPL, Rs 10,000 as litigation charges and refund Rs 26,000, which Mann had deposited towards the club charges.

In his complaint, Mann alleged that he had purchased a flat from JLPL on July 30, 2012, after paying a total amount of Rs 27 lakh. “After two-three months, I came to know that the material used in the flat was very cheap. Apart from dampness on the walls of the flat, we found that the sanitary system was not according to the provisions of GMADA. Even electricity supply was improper”, stated Mann in his complaint.

He alleged that the electricity board, Kharar, had refused to give electricity connection to him with the remarks that JTPL was not registered and recognised by GMADA and was defaulter of Powercom.

In their reply, the JTPL management had stated that the client in question did not purchase the flat from them directly rather he had got it transferred in his name from the open market.

After giving hearing to both the parties, the Bench comprising Madhu P Singh, S S Dhaliwal and HK Ghuman issued orders to the JTPL management to compensate Mann with the above-mentioned amount within a period of one month.

Money spent on repairs of flat to be refunded too

The Mohali District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has also ordered defaulter JTPL to pay Rs one lakh compensation to complainant Balraj Singh Mann for the necessary repairs in his flat, which was purchased from JTPL, Rs 10,000 as litigation charges and refund Rs 26,000, which Mann had deposited towards the club charges.

Fondness for good food proved fatal for girl

The desire to have good food at a function organised in Sector 28 cost the eight-year-old her life. Deceased identified as Rajwatti was hit by a recklessly driven luxury car on late Sunday evening, while she was crossing the road near Sector 28 petrol pump.

The deceased girl was the daughter of a labourer working at the in Sector 26 “mandi”. She was excited to have dinner at a function organised in the park near the Sector 28 petrol pump. “Rajwatti left the house at around 9.30 pm although she also wanted me to accompany her but I refused to go”, said 12-year-old Prem Chand, the deceased’s brother, who was in tears following the incident.

The family lives in a temporary hut erected near the boundary wall of the Dispensary in Sector 26 on the opposite side of Sector 28 where the function was organised.

The girl was hit by a recklessly driven Audi car bearing temporary registration number CH-58T-1096.The car was driven by Chirag Sachdev, a resident of Sector 18, who rushed her to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, where later, she died during treatment.

The accused was arrested and later released on bail after the medical examination, meanwhile a case under Section 279 (rash driving), 304(a) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) was registered against him at the Sector 26 police station.

The car of the deceased was impounded by the police. The family members of the deceased got to know about the incident late in the night. The girl’s parents, Mulchand and Malla, were inconsolable after they came to know that their daughter had died

Man caught with banned drugs in Mohali

The Mohali police today nabbed a person with about 4,000 capsules and 180 tablets of banned drugs from near the shooting range at Phase VI here today. Samar Vineet, the area’s station house officer, said that the accused, identified as Ravi (30), a resident of Jujjhar Nagar, was nabbed with a bag, containing the drugs from Phase VI this afternoon.

“Ravi, who originally hails from Behlana village in Muzzafarnagar (UP), used to sell the drugs to the youngsters and other drug addicts in the area. He was in search of his clients when he was nabbed”, said Samar Vineet.

A case under Sections 22,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him at the Phase 1 police station, here.

Two get 3-year term in robbery case

Chandigarh, May 20
The court of Additional District and Session Judge, Shalini Singh Nagpal, convicted two accused - Komal Soni and Nitin, alias Monu, with three years of imprisonment in a robbery case, reported in 2008.

The conviction came three years after the lower court acquitted them in 2010. The case resumed against them after the local administration filed an appeal, following which the trial began in the Additional Judge’s court here.

The court today held them guilty and pronounced the conviction along with a fine of Rs 4,000 each.

The case was reported on 31 July 2008, after the two youths were found robbing a Sector 42 resident near Sector 17. Komal Soni is a resident of Pinjore while Nitin is a resident of Kalka, Haryana.

Attempt to murder: Charges framed

Chandigarh, May 20
The court of Session Judge SK Aggarwal today framed charges against Mehndi Hasan, a resident of Dhanas, in an attempt to murder case, reported in January this year.

The recording of evidence will start from June 13. Mehndi was accused of assaulting the victim, Vinod Kumar, a daily wager from whom he had to recover Rs 2,000. The incident took place on January 13 when the accused attacked him brutally following a verbal altercation. While the victim was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment, the accused was arrested. — TNS

Continuing with his good form, Nikhil Chaudhary today scored a ton for Ludhiana on the first day’s play against hosts Mohali during a Dhruv Pandove Cricket Trophy tie at Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium.

Nikhil, who scored 265 runs during his previous knock, scored 159 runs studded with 23 boundaries and two sixes. He was also involved in a 121-run partnership with Sandeep. Sandeep scored a quick 71 off 80 balls, with the help of 13 boundaries and a six, before being caught by Harsrup off Abhijit Garg.

Nikhil stitched another partnership of 78 runs for the sixth wicket with Hartejesvi (46). For Mohali, Khushpreet Singh took two wickets, giving away 70 runs. The visitors were on 357 for 7 in 96 overs at the close of first day’s play.

In the second match, Chandigarh were bundled out on a total of 214 runs against Jalandhar on the first day at DAV School, Sector 8. After winning the toss and putting hosts to bat, Mohit Maria’s five-wicket haul helped the visitors get the Chandigarh batsmen out within 70.2 overs.

For Chandigarh, Bhagminder topped the score chart by scoring 69 off 141, with eight boundaries and two sixes. He was involved in fruitful partnerships with Arjit Pannu and Simranpreet for the second and third wickets respectively. Ajit contributed with 33 off 38, with five boundaries, while Simranpreet scored 32 runs.

In reply, Jalandhar also had a poor start after they lost two wickets on a total of 26 runs. Batsman Himanshu Sharma remained unbeaten on 16 at the end of day’s play. Hemang Chaudhary (one for 5) and Vineet Dhakka (one for 8) shared the two wickets.

Anmolpreet Singh (146) scored an unbeaten century. His 177-ball innings saw 18 boundaries and a six. He was supported by Sanbir Singh, who scored 74 off 150 balls, inclusive of nine boundaries. Mandeepinder Bawa was the other principal scorer with a 51-run knock, inclusive of 11 boundaries. For Amritsar, Rohit Kumar claimed two for 82, while Sunny, Abhinav Sharma and Karan Sharma took a wicket each.

KK Cricket Club drub A-top by 162 runs in UT T20 league

KK Cricket Club drubbed A-top Cricket Club by 162 runs in the ongoing UT T20 Cricket League today. This tournament is being played at the stadiums of Sector 16 and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26.

Fine contributions by Inderjeet (57 runs), Manpreet Goni (52 runs), Harish (34 runs), Umesh Kaira (45 runs) and Sanjay (36 runs) helped the team to score 234 runs in 20 overs.

For the bowling side, Harpreet took 2 wickets. In reply, the batsmen of A-top could score only 72 runs. Kulwinder Romi claimed three wickets, while Kulwinder Rembo and Ajay Bhardwaj took two wickets each.

In the second match, LIC Cricket Club defeated Paras Club. The losing side posted a total of 120 runs. The LIC cricket team achieved the target in the 10th over only.

Batting first, Sonu Pandey scored 28 runs, highest for the losing side, while for LIC, Himanshu Chawla and Rajwinder Golu took 4 wickets each. For LIC Club, Ravi Inder scored 57 runs and Himanshu Chawla scored 42 runs.

In the third match, the Chetna Club thrashed Chandigarh Police by 8 wickets. Chandigarh Police failed to achieve the target of 154 runs. For Chandigarh Police, Vikas Rathee took the initiative and scored 66 runs off 45 balls, whereas Ankit (55 runs) and Rockey Ratta (78 runs) ensured the Chetna Club’s victory.

In the last match, the DAV Club thrashed the Local Boys' Club by 18 runs. The DAV Club scored 151 runs with a fine batting performance by Kamal and Anil Sihag, who scored 47 runs and 39 runs, respectively. Karanveer claimed 2 wickets. The Boys' Club failed to achieve the target and could score only 133 runs. Naveen scored 33 runs, while Klwinder claimed 3 wickets.

Chandigarh Police defeat JW Marriott by 30 runs

The teams of Chandigarh Police, Ranbaxy Labs and Tata Motors registered wins in the ongoing CII Corporate Cricket Cup, here. The team of Chandigarh Police defeated JW Marriott by 30 runs. The winning team scored 161 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Vikas Rathi contributed 54 off 44, while Balwinder made 35 off 27.

For Marriott, Anand and Abhilash took two wickets each. Chasing a target of 162 runs, the Marriott team was bundled out for 131 runs. Anand contributed 37 off 27 and Rohan made 27 off 18. Vikas Rathi grabbed three crucial wickets for Chandigarh Police.

In another match, the Ranbaxy team defeated Placement Guru by 91 runs. Batting first, Ranbaxy posted 178 runs, with Sumit Sharma contributing 50 off 32, including four boundaries and a six. Pushap also contributed 52 off 35, with five fours and a six. Tejwinder took 3 for 24.

In reply, Placement Guru could score only 87 runs. Chetan with 26 runs remained the main scorer for the team. Nikhil, GS Raina and JS Pahwa grabbed two wickets each.

In the last match, Tata Motors defeated ATS by 54 runs. The winning side scored 193 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Lalit Bindra (56 off 25) and Himanshu Makkar (55 off 29) were the main scorers for the team. Bowlers Sandeep and Somnath grabbed 2 wickets each. In reply, the ATS team could score only 139 runs.

Western Air Command win handball championship

Western Air Command won the Air Force Handball Championship after defeating Central Air Command. The championship concluded at the 12 Wing Air Force Station here.

The Western Air Command team registered a 38-28 win over the rivals. A total of 8 teams from all commands of the Indian Air Force participated in the championship. The tournament was conducted on a league-cum-knock out basis as per the rules laid down by the Handball Federation of India. A total of 18 matches were played in the championship.

Air Commodore SK Indoria, Air Officer Commanding, 12 Wing, Air Force, Chandigarh, gave away trophies and prizes to the teams. During the championship, probable were also selected for the forthcoming Inter-Services Handball Championship scheduled to be held at Arty Centre (Army), Hyderabad, in September.

Positions: 1 Western Air Command; 2 Central Air Command; 3 Maintenance Air Command; 4 South Western Air Command; 5 Training Command; 6 Eastern Air Command; 7 Air Head Quarters; and 8 Southern Air Command.

Second phase of gradation scheme on May 29

The UT Sports Department will organise the second phase of gradation scheme at the Sector 42 sports complex, 10 am onwards on May 29. The interested applicants can submit their gradation forms at the venue before 5pm on May 25. Local players who attained first three positions in inter-school, school national games, inter-university, all-India inter-university, senior nationals and open nationals can apply for the gradation certificates. Those playing under the sub-junior group are not eligible.

In the previous gradation scrutiny, the department had received a total of 163 applications, highest till date. Games including athletics, archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, cricket, chess, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey (men and women), judo, kabaddi (national style), kayaking and canoeing, shooting, squash, swimming, rowing, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling are being covered under the gradation policy.

US Vitamins beat Kudos chemi

The team of Kudos chemi went down to US Vitamins during a match of the ongoing 1st AG Challenger T20 Cricket Tournament at SD Senior Secondary School, Sector 24, here. Batting first, the losing side scored a total of 96 runs, with Kamal (31 runs) and Rajiv (25 runs) scoring the lion’s share.

For the bowling side, Sumit took 4 for 22, while Amit claimed 3 for 7. In reply, the winning side achieved the target in the 13th over. Chandan (23 runs) and Pradeep (12 runs) guided the team to victory. For the bowling side, Rajvir claimed 2 for 13.

In the second match, the team of JW Marriott defeated Canara Bank. The winning side scored 226 runs. Bowler Simranpreet took 2 for 47, while Jaivir claimed 1 for 28.

In reply, the Canara side could manage to score only 196 runs. Jaivir (56 runs) and Rampal (39 runs) were the only main scorers, while bowlers Adil and Mandeep grabbed two wickets each.
