Finally, Admn defines PG
Chandigarh, April 29
Paying guests (PGs) will not be allowed to run their own kitchen in the PG accommodation in the city. After nearly two years, the UT Administration has finally defined the term: paying guest. A paying guest can be asked to leave the residential premises by its owner any time, that too without giving a notice. The practice of building owners entering into a rent deed with paying guests to circumvent the law will now be null and void.

Investigation transferred to economic offences wing
Chandigarh, April 29
The investigation into the extortion case having a former in charge of the crime branch, Inspector Amanjot Singh, as the accused was today transferred to DSP (Economic Offences Wing) Ram Chander Meena. The DSP will begin recording statements in the case from tomorrow.

PU fines two students Rs 41,300 each

Two Panjab University students have been fined Rs 41,300 each for the damage caused to the university property due to reckless driving by them, which recently led to a major accident on the campus. The university has also decided that if the two students, a boy and a girl, are found driving recklessly on the campus again, their admission will be cancelled permanently.

Panchkula schools blame administration, police for traffic mess

A traffic jam outside Little Flower Convent School in Sector 14, Panchkula. Despite numerous solutions having beeen proposed, there seems to no solution in sight to ease the traffic congestion outside schools in Panchkula. For parents, dropping or picking up wards from outside their schools, especially those located in residential areas, is a herculean task.

Jilted lover gets 5-year jail for stabbing girl
Chandigarh, April 29
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced a 27-year-old jilted lover to five years' rigorous imprisonment for stabbing a 22-year-old girl. The court sentenced Sonu Chauhan, alias Rahul, to jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

The newly inaugurated Citizen Facilitation Centre at the Municipal Corporation office in Sector 4, Panchkula, on Monday. Providing much needed respite to residents who have to make rounds of the Municipal Corporation departments to get their work done, the civic body has launched a new project. Residents will now be able to avail of all kinds of assistance for any service via a slip that will bear the name and contact number of assistants who would be handling their problem, and will also mention the number of days it would take to address their problem.

10 traders booked for bogus VAT returns

Eight months after the UT Excise and Taxation Department unearthed a scam involving filing of bogus VAT returns to the tune of Rs 1 crore during 2010-11 and 2011-12, the UT police has registered two separate FIRs against ten traders.

Bank caught on wrong foot, penalised

A local consumer court today penalised Kotak Mahindra Bank for wrongly putting a customer's name on the defaulter list of the CIBIL’s (Credit Information Bureau India Ltd) website and failing to issue the No Dues Certificate in spite of the settlement of loan account.

Aggrieved relatives flay police for inaction
Dera Bassi, April 29
The Dera Bassi police has failed to resolve various criminal cases including that of a child’s murder even after passing of over three months since the incident. The aggrieved relatives have expressed dissatisfaction and surprise over the police inaction and inability to show any results. Parents of the four-year-old boy, Jaskaran, who was found murdered and dumped in a well at Behra village in January this year, said the police failed to trace the culprits in all these months.

Man in police net for abducting minor girls
Ropar, April 29
A Kiratpur-based man has been booked for abducting two minor girls. The accused, identified as Harpreet, alias Nanu, and the girls have been missing since Saturday. Kamaljit Kaur, a resident of Kalyanpur village and mother of one of the girls, in her complaint to the police alleged that her daughter had been missing since Saturday evening. Later, she found another girl from the locality was also missing.

Wheat worth Rs 236.41 crore procured

The procurement of wheat is in full swing at all the 33 procurement centres set up in the district. Till today 2,55,979 lakh MT of wheat has been purchased by various government procurement agencies and private parties.

Motorcyclist dies in mishap
Banur, April 29
One person was killed in a road accident near here last night. The accident occurred when a truck hit the motorcycle he was riding on from the opposite side on the Banur-Kharar road near Tangori village. The deceased had been identified as Gurvant Singh, a resident of Mote Majra.

High Court okay with CBI probe into SAI ‘scam’
Chandigarh, April 29
Two years after Punjab and Haryana High Court directed a CBI probe on a petition alleging corruption in the Sports Authority of India (SAI), a Division Bench has clarified that the premier investigation agency has not been "restrained from performing its prescribed duties". The Bench clarified the same while taking up an appeal filed by the "whistleblower" in the case.

Husband, in-laws get life term for murder
Mohali, April 29
A local court today awarded life sentence to a person and his parents for murdering his wife by setting her on fire three years ago. Mohali Additional District and Session Judge PP Singh today gave life term imprisonment to Gurtej Singh, his father, Ajit Singh, and mother, Surjeet Kaur, for Kuldip Kaur (Gurtej's wife), who succumbed to her injuries on May 5, 2010.

Man held for hiding cattle in P’kula
Panchkula, April 29
Escaping the eyes of the Chandigarh authorities, many cattle owners were caught keeping their cattle ‘stealthily’ in Panchkula at the back side of a liquor vend at the Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, Panchkula, today evening.

Man arrested on charge of raping girl at marriage palace
Mohali, April 29
The police today arrested a person for raping a 19-year-old girl at a marriage palace located on the Kharar-Landran Road here. The accused has been identified as Bappail Singh, a resident of Fatehpur village, Ropar district. Bappail was known to maternal aunt of the victim and had met her last month.

PCS officer booked for forgery
Chandigarh, April 29
The UT police has registered a case against PCS officer TK Goyal for preparing a forged caste certificate. The Director, Vigilance Bureau, Punjab Mini-Secretariat, Rajinder, in his complaint to the police alleged that Goyal and others had prepared a forged document (SC/ST) for submission to the Punjab Vigilance Department.
