steal Watto’s Lotto
Chennai, April 22 Chennai won by five wickets in 19.5 overs. Despite the massive target, courtesy Shane Watson’s 61-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals, the first century of IPL-6, CSK never seemed in any sort of danger. This was largely due to a blazing knock of 88 (51 balls, 13 fours and one six) by Michael Hussey and his 90-run partnership with Suresh Raina, who smashed 51 off 35 balls with four fours and two sixers. The two added these 90 runs in just 10.1 overs after the early fall of Murali Vijay (3). When Hussey was finally run out, off the first ball of the 17th over, CSK were left to score 32 off 23 balls. Earlier, Watson had done most of the scoring for Rajasthan Royals, striking six fours and an equal number of sixers in his knock. Stuart Binny chipped with 36 off 22 towards the end to raise RR’s hopes of tasting their fifth win of the season. With five wins and 10 points, CSK are on top on the points table. With four wins and three losses, RR are at the fourth position with 8 points. —

Modi seeks Jaitley's recusal from disciplinary panel
New Delhi, April 2 Citing principle of natural justice, a defence team representing the former IPL head has accused Jaitley of being a complainant in Kochi franchise dispute involving Modi and objected to his being one of the Disciplinary Committee members. It has also contended that not all the three members were present in-person during most of the disciplinary committee proceedings but via video link or any other medium. “Jaitley being a complainant in Kochi franchise dispute cannot be a judge. It has been proved by a minutes of meeting of BCCI's governing council dated June 25, 2010,” said Mehmood M Abdi, General Counsel & Constituted Attorney of Modi. According to the minutes of the meeting, Jaitley had called the then BCCI head Shashank Manohar to convey apprehension raised by one of the bankers claimed to be associated with Kochi franchise, namely Rendezvous Sports, over undue delay by Modi (who was IPL Commissioner then) in execution of agreements in relation to the franchise even though it was a successful bidder. — PTI |
RVS Rathore backs Majithia for NRAI post after court order
Chandigarh, April 22 The court not only set aside the election of four life members to the 115 member electoral college held on March 4, but also restrained the NRAI from declaring the result of the April 6 election for the post of president of the association. Rathore had filed a petition in this regard. Talking to TNS, the Athens double trap silver medallist said eminent sportspersons were of the view that Majithia was the right person to head the NRAI and that they were convinced that the Akali leader would run the association in consultation with an advisory body. Rathore for the first time also gave an indication that sportspersons had approached Majithia to accept the position, and not the other way round. "We felt that we needed to bring in someone powerful who could take on Raninder," he said. The shooter said Majithia had told them that he could only run the NRAI if given the chance with the help of sportspersons and that he would create an advisory board for this purpose. "It was then that we were convinced that Majithia was the right person for the job," Rathore added. Reacting to the judgement of the Delhi High Court; Rathore said the shooting fraternity had been able to convince the court with the help of Majithia that the entire election process had been manipulated by Raninder. He said it was "highly irregular" that Raninder first became the returning officer for the election of four life members to the electoral college on March 4 and then authorised himself to nominate members to vote for him as he was the candidate also. "How can the post of returning officer and the candidate be held by the same person in any election?" said Rathore. He welcomed the court decision, saying a "manipulation" had been "corrected" which otherwise would have done irretrievable harm to the cause of shooting in India. Rathore called for a free and fair election and urged that active sportsmen should also be part of the governing body of NRAI. — TNS |
Franchisees have to bear rehabilitation costs of IPL related injuries
New Delhi, April 22 This decision was taken at the NCA Committee meeting in Chennai on Monday during which members expressed the opinion that austerity measures needed to be taken in a bid to put an end to the ever-spiralling costs. "It has been decided that from now on, the respective franchise or the player himself will have to bear the cost of his rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy in case the player sustains injury during the Indian Premier League," a BCCI official preferring anonymity told PTI today. It had been learnt that the BCCI were shelling out a whopping amount in the tune of Rs 5.5 crore in order to pay the salaries of their coaching and administrative staff. From 12-member support staff that was employed till date, the list has been pruned to six. According to sources, the three coaches who will remain in the BCCI pay rolls are bowling coach Bharath Arun, batting coach Dinesh Nanavati and coaches' instructor Kinjal Suratwala. The three other members of the support staff will be two physios Ashish Kaushik and Nitin Patel along with trainer Sudarshan. Asked about the six other members of the support staff, the source said, "From now on, they will only be summoned if there is a camp or a tournament. It will be more of a freelance employment which will be assignment-based." The BCCI's NCA committee also trimmed the proposed budget of Rs 85 lakh to Rs 64 lakh for a National U-16 camp. Even the proposal to hire five foreign coaches were shot down while former players will be invited from now on to conduct short clinics. There has also been a proposal to rollback the salaries of the NCA administrative staff. — PTI |
Dhankar strikes gold for India
New Delhi, April 22 India emerged on top in freestyle category with two gold and as many bronze medals. Overall, India finished the championships with nine medals — 2 gold, one silver and 6 bronze, their best ever performance. Indian grapplers had won one gold and four bronze in the last edition of the championship in South Korea. Amit (66kg) defeated Mongolia's M Ganzorig in an exciting summit battle with every move drawing loud cheers from the spectators at the K D Jadhav Wrestling Stadium. However, Narsingh Pancham Singh (84kg) missed out on a bronze medal after being beaten in the third-place bout. The Mongolian started the final bout against Amit on the offensive and was quick to attack the local favourite. He took the first period 1-0. Amit came back strongly to take the lead in the second period. He then rolled Gangzorig and took the bout into the final set. The 24-year-old Indian dragged his opponent out of the playing area to bag the first point. The score was levelled soon as the Mongolian was handed a caution point after foul play from Amit. The Haryana lad scored one point to take a 2-1 lead. The Mongolian team made an unsuccessful challenge of the point awarded to hand the Indian a 3-1 lead. The visitor tried hard and secured a point in the dying moments but the final hooter signalled the end of sensational bout. Amit conquered the mat 0-1 4-0 3-2 to bag the second gold for the freestyle team. “I wanted to win a medal as it was a home event. I had done hard practice for this event. And I am happy that I have delivered on the expectations," Amit said. Amit had a similar semifinal bout, where he came from behind to prevail upon Ruslan Pliev 0-1 4-4 4-0. — PTI |
Top India pros set for Korea
Jeev Milkha Singh left behind an uneventful week on the Japanese Tour, looking forward to better innings, drawn from positive past experiences.
Offering a prize purse of 2.2 million euros, the European and Asian Tours co-sanctioned Ballantine's Championship in Korea will see the likes of 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, US Ryder Cup players Dustin Johnson, Zachary Johnson and Asian Tour headliners like Order of Merit leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat and winners Gaganjeet Bhullar, Anirban Lahiri and Scott Hend.
Gaganjeet, who has four victories to his credit on the Asian Tour already and trails Aphibarnrat on the Order of Merit, hopes to narrow the lead this week. "My goal for this season is to win the Asian Tour's Order of Merit. My second placed finish at the Avantha Masters helped and was great for my confidence. I hope to repeat that performance this week," said Bhullar, a four-time Asian Tour winner. Jeev, who lost in a playoff to Graeme McDowell here in 2008, is keen to put up a good show. "I have good memories of this event and have always enjoyed playing in Asia. I am playing well and look forward to carding some low scores this week," said Jeev. Back home, on the home circuit, Chiragh Kumar won the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Open 2013 on the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). "I am thrilled to win my fourth PGTI title," said the Delhi professional. While Sri Lankan Mithun Pererra finished second, the evergreen Mukesh Kumar finished third. He was elected for a second consecutive term - his sixth in total - beating Tejvir Singh Sibia by almost 50 votes in a closely fought contest. Sandhu's main commitments this term will include "getting the club leased finalised, improving the golf course and ensuring transparency in financial matters." Six members were elected from Sandhu's proposed team while the remaining five were elected from the opposing team to constitute the 11-member management committee. It remains to be seen how the management will execute its promises. |

Performance is what matters: Saina
New Delhi, April 22 "Pressure is always there. But it is not about pressure only. It is about how I play in the tournament and on a particular match day," Saina said on the eve of the USD 200,000 event. In the absence of top Chinese shuttlers, Saina has been seeded number one and handed a relatively easy draw in the women's singles. She is not expected to be challenged much before the semifinals, where she is likely to meet world no. 8, Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, who had recently beaten her in the semi-final of the All England Championships. But Saina insisted that none of her opponents would be easy to deal with."It is going to be really tough.
There are so many top players in the tournament. It all depends on how well you are prepared that day. All I can say is I will try my best.Trying to shrug off the complacency factor, Saina said that she can't take her first round oppponent lightly."My first round opponent — the Indonesian (Belaetrix Manuputi) will be tough. The Chinese or the Japanese girls in the subsequent rounds are also pretty good. As far as Intanon is concerned, she played very well in the last two matches I faced her. I will have to watch her videos carefully before taking her on," Saina said.Saina said that she was happy with her form this year. "I am happy with my results this year. I have been playing consistently and have been regularly reaching the semifinals or finals. I think that's good," she assessed. Asked how much gap is there between her and the Chinese shuttlers, Saina explained,"It is not easy to break the Chinese wall. Even if you do well in one tournament, in the next they will again dominate. It is not easy to beat them time and again. You have to be really consistent to be winning. In one competition, you see the gap reducing but in the next, it again increases. "Game wise, there is not much of a difference. In some tournaments, you do well but in others, they come better prepared. There are so many players...someone or the other keeps coming up the ranks and performs well." The 23-year-old said that after winning the bronze medal at the Olympics in London last year, only thing she had worked on was her knees. "Post Olympics the only thing I have worked on was my knee. It is much better now and hopefully will be playing without the tape in this competition." On whether she has any regrets on not being able to win the All England Championship till now, Saina said, "For me Olympic medal was the one I wanted to achieve. I was lucky to have the Olympic medal. I have playing in the semifinals twice in All-England championship and in also in quarters. It somehow didn't happen." Youngsters need to be more consistent: Gopichand
Indian shuttlers might have done well in the last couple years, but national coach Pullela Gopichand feels the youngsters need to be more consistent."Indian players have done well in the last couple of years but they need to be more consistent with the results. They need to stabilise more. They are young and will take some time to adjust to the top level," Gopichand said on the eve of the India Open Super Series tournament here."A lot of players have beaten top-10. They will improve with time. They need more exposure," he added. The coach added that while his wards are getting better but the level of competition world wide is also increasing. — PTI |

Barca vs Bayern: Clash of titans
Munich, April 22 Both teams are dominating their leagues to an almost embarrassing extent, have won the Champions League four times apiece, share an acrimonious rivalry with Real Madrid, and owe part of their success to the flamboyant Dutchman Louis van Gaal. Both have also been in two Champions League finals in the last four years, though the Catalans won both of theirs and the Bavarians came out losers on each occasion. Barcelona are 13 points clear at the top of La Liga, yet could be considered underdogs against a rampant Bayern, who wrapped up the Bundesliga two weeks ago and won two games by 6-1 margins this week even when resting their top players. “The players are just enjoying their football, and our attitude is superb. Every man was totally motivated, we put together some very fluid moves, we showed great discipline, and we created outstanding goals,” said coach Jupp Heynckes after Saturday’s 6-1 win at Hanover 96. “Once again, the players have proved we don’t have a B-team, we only have an Bayern’s dominance has caused some disquiet in the Bundesliga, which often proclaims itself to be Europe’s most open league. “There’s a big difference in performance levels in the league,” club president Uli Hoeness told Kicker last week. “We can’t be comfortable with that. We have to analyse why this is the case.” Barcelona’s superiority in La Liga has led to suggestions from Madrid media that it has become a formality for them and they will not even celebrate winning it. “It appears there are people who want to make out that the league doesn’t count for anything, but that’s not the case, it’s a very important title,” said midfielder Cesc Fabregas. “We have worked very hard.” “If we do eventually win the league, there is no doubt that there is great merit in taking four titles in five seasons,” stand-in coach Jordi Roura said. “It’s a very difficult championship.” Bayern believe their playing style and policy of giving priority to players raised locally makes them similar to Barcelona and that it was only natural that Guardiola, who quit the Nou Camp last season, should continue his career at the Allianz Arena from next season. Hoeness revealed recently that Bayern had been involved in talks with Guardiola long before he agreed to coach them in January. “I had the impression from the beginning that Bayern are a club who are quite close to Barcelona in footballing attitude, so it was not that difficult for us to convince him,” Hoeness told World Soccer magazine. — Reuters Likely Starting XIs Bayern Munich: 1-Manuel Neuer; 2-Philipp Lahm, 5-Daniel van Buyten, 4-Dante, 27-David Alaba; 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger, 8-Javi Martinez; 25-Thomas Mueller, 7-Franck Ribery, 10-Arjen Robben; 33-Mario Gomez Barcelona: 1-Victor Valdes; 2-Daniel Alves, 3-Gerard Pique, 22-Eric Abidal, 18-Jordi Alba; 6-Xavi, 16-Sergio Busquets, 8-Andres Iniesta; 9-Alexis Sanchez, 10-Lionel Messi, 17-Pedro Messi has recovered Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has recovered sufficiently from a hamstring strain to feature in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg at Bayern Munich, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said on Monday. |

No joy for Anand in Paris after Adams defeat
Paris, April 22 On what turned out to be a day of big upsets, Chinese champion Ding Liren caused another big flutter crushing world number three Levon Aronian of Armenia. The 10-player round-robin super tournament, however, saw Vladimir Kramnik of Russia at the top of his form as he grounded compatriot Nikita Vituigov while the other two games ended in draws. Anand’s 2012 World championship challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel played exciting chess as black before holding Peter Svidler, while the all-French clash between Laurent Fressinet and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave turned out to be the shortest game of the day. Split between The Louvre Museum in Paris and the Russian museum in Saint Petersburg, the tournament will have the first five rounds here before the battle shifts to Russia for the last four games. Anand went down with white pieces, something that might be detrimental to the Indian’s campaign as the tournament progresses further. He went for the Ruy Lopez and for a line that Indian P Harikrishna had successfully chosen against Gata Kamsky of United States some time back. Adams, however, remained a tough nut to crack from a level position that arose after the trade of queens. — PTI |
