Whoever said mainstream cinema is your ultimate label to fame, hadn't perhaps taken a couple of career graphs into consideration. Rahul Khanna, defies conventions and redefines stardom. If the name takes a moment to register, the appearance won't. 1947 Earth, Bollywood/Hollywood, MTV Most Wanted…out of sight is not certainly out of mind! There's a lot that needs catching up. So where do we begin from? Perhaps the self imposed hibernation. "I'm busy making appearances like these, hosting shows, traveling, stepping out once in a while," he smiles, while in Chandigarh at Elante Mall to launch The Collective store. It was quite worth it, the wait and the hype, including the preceding party and the mini fashion show. The friends, the family, the camaraderie…nothing was amiss, till he plays the showstopper and rings in the excitement in capital letters.

Switching back to his career, the forgettable credits include Elaan and Raqeeb, there's the international The Emperor's Club. Coming up is yet another English movie, titled Fireflies. "It's a story of two brothers who've been estranged. It's a movie by Sabal Shikhawat and deals with love, loss, redemption." The parallel cinema gain is commercial cinema's loss and we are about to make peace with that till, "No, there's been no conscious effort to do only a certain kind of cinema. I am open to mainstream, commercial films. It's just that I haven't been getting the right kind of scripts."

While in Fireflies, it was the "single minded vision of the director that made him commit," otherwise, "it could be the script, the maker, the director," that makes him sign onto the dotted line. He adds, "We've just finished shooting the film, the marketing part will be looked onto later. It's likely to get screened at a couple of festivals."

Apart from Fireflies, there might be nothing on at the moment but there's a lot happening anyway. What with the evolution and experimentation and directors like Tigmanshu Dhulia. "I feel it's a historic phase of Indian cinema. It's a revolution taking place and it's just the beginning."

Meanwhile, even the reserved set are turning into eager beavers. Did a lady think out loud? Will you marry me? "Sure, I'm not doing much today evening, so why not?" By now, the personality has taken over the celebrity. There is so much more to probe, starting with brother Akshaye Khanna. The PR team behind plays the stop watch. Mainstream cinema? Who cares…the limelight follows anyway. The queue for photograph seems to be growing longer by the minute.

Cityscapes

  • Perhaps, it's the first close brush with the city. So how much has he been around the town? "I have just landed tonight and reached here straight from the hotel.
  • Well, he plays a triangle with the city of roundabouts. "And from here, I'll be going straight to the airport." No mincing words.

Luxury at hand
VJ Gaelyn Mendonca feels veejaying is tougher than acting since there is no script and there are no retakes
Tanya Malhotra

While there are some watches that tell the time, there are others, which speak volumes about your time! If you are the sort, who is addicted to watches, Tissot brings a collection your way that is hard to resist. At Ethos, to introduce the T-10 collection of Tissot watches, Gaelyn Mendonca, a popular MTV video jockey, flaunts her new possession as she says, "A watch tenders much elegance to your personality. And when it comes to a brand like Tissot, it only intensifies your style quotient."

The T-10 watches have intricate Parisian designs, which are complimented by the contemporary touch. Meanwhile, if you fancy watches with over-the-top stylized dials, check out the mother-of-pearl dial version, studded with diamonds, which is priced at the range of Rs 19,400 and goes up to Rs 25,100.

Brands and fashion

As Gaelyn dons a humble attire, we question her stance on brands, "Very honestly, I am not brand conscious, especially with the variety of clothes that the streets of Mumbai have to offer." She laughs while adding, "However, when it comes to watches and footwear, I definitely like to rely on a fine brand."

Playing VJ

"The job of a Video jockey is tougher than acting in a movie because you act according to the script, which is a subject matter to repetition and re-takes. Being a VJ, one has to be creatively very spontaneous." Gaelyn has hosted various MTV shows, including Whats Up World?, Campus Diaries, Road To Love, College Mayhem and many more. She is here to promote the Season 2 of MTV Unplugged, which is partnered by Tissot Watches. The Promotional tour will witness startling Performances by renowned singers like Shafqat Amanat Ali, Euphoria, Kailash Kher amongst others.

Revolution ahead

While many consider the reality shows, telecast on music channels to be synonymous with a fluffy attempt to encourage young rebels Gaelyn says, "Well, yes, MTV is all about youth, but not entirely about riots, it's more about stirring a revolution. MTV is equally involved in the betterment of the society. For instance, Dream Project is a show on MTV that takes the dreams of a thousand underprivileged kids and fulfills them."

Bollywood calling

Gaelyn has recently made her Bollywood debut with Rohan Sippy's, Nautanki Saala, opposite Ayushman Khurrana. "I essayed the role of Ayushman's girlfriend and the experience was euphoric," she says, while adding, "Currently, I am meeting new directors and planning on some more Bollywood flicks. You will definitely see more of me on the bigger screen in the coming six months." She sings off.

A train, a heritage
Travelling on the Kalka-Shimla railway line is once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are a few who have captured some unique moments enroute...
Amarjot Kaur

They have clicked her in all possible poses and in every passing season. She travelled through the mountain spring and turned carefully, yet reluctantly towards the chilling winter and even while tiptoeing along the edge of the high altitudes, her every movement translated into sheer grace. As Sanjay Kaushal and Shubh Mohan Singh, begin to tender a humble explanation for their creative pursuit, a photography exhibition titled From Earth to Sky, they first choose to justify their subject, the Kalka-Shimla railway line. While they begin to draw a colloquial expression that explains their interest, Shubh, who is a psychiatrist by profession, shares, "We are rail fans!" he quips, while adding, "It took us over a year-and-a-half to come up with this exhibition that etches a detailed description of the Kalka-Shimla train, which is now, a heritage."

Meanwhile, Kaushal walks you around the gallery at Punjab Kala Bhawan as he talks eloquently about the significant aspect of each photograph. "This is the journey of the Kalka-Shimla locomotive as it passes through 20 odd stations," He says while pointing towards the two adjacent walls donned with the photographs that were titled, The Arrival, Dawn at Kalka Railway Station, Different Generations, Monsoon Green, Steam Redux, Entering the Plains and Creeping Urbanisation. He then turns towards the other set of photographs, which hang adroitly on the opposite wall as he continued to explain, "You see, this is how the train passes from Parwanoo and then to Jabli as it finally reaches Shimla. I captured these shots on a Cannon DSLR 7D while trekking around. Also, this train has the oldest steam engine functioning, it's called the KC520."

Meanwhile, he captures the beauty of the train and the stations while pitching them against the old pictures, dated somewhere around the 1920s and 1930s, which they downloaded from the postcards available on the Internet, hence giving the visitors more avenues to explore, understand and appreciate while engaging in a comparative study of the same. They captured Bridge 226, which is the longest between Kalka and Shimla and Bridge 541 at Arch Gallery, Kanoh, as they pitched it against its old photograph that dates way back to the early 20s. "Now this is one of the most interesting shots," says Kaushal, as he points towards the photograph that was taken at Barog, "This is the only station during the entire journey where the train stops and Barog is known for its cutlets. Over two years ago, the station at Kandaghat was burnt down in an accident and the one at Jabli has been closed down for nearly ten years now. So, this is the only station where the train stops."

Both, Kaushal and Shubh have given much attention to the details while clicking the photographs. "We did not even want one weak shot, so we were very self-critical while selecting the pictures for this exhibition," says Shubh. When we asked them the reason for not framing their photos, he laughs, "We were not left with any money to do that!"

Brush with art
Artist Shifa Mahajan started painting as a hobby, but it soon got converted into a passion…
Tanya Malhotra

Locally, you will recognise her as the artist who painted the walls and staircase of Books and Brew, Rajbhog restaurant or Pashtun (earlier known as Khyber). With no artistic background, Shifa Mahajan has come a long way towards the circuit of fame. Although things have fallen into place so far, according to Shifa, she still has a long way to go.

A peep-in

Shifa, 24, once gifted her painting to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and that's where it all began. Although it was more of a hobby then, she has been an artist for over a year now. Her very first exhibition was organised in Books and Brew, Chandigarh, titled 'Charcoal and Water', followed by another exhibition at Chitramayee State Art Gallery, Hyderabad, titled 'Healing with Pigment', last year while 'Perfectly Imperfect' is Shifa's third solo show celebrating a triumphant year. Apart from this, Shifa is also a part of The Nek Chand Foundation, Chandigarh.

Perfectly imperfect

She says, "While the perception of the world is to judge an artist as a hit or a failure, I cannot count myself in either of the category. While within a year I have travelled, experimented and practiced a lot, this is just the beginning and there is so much more to do!" She adds, "Summing it all up, the name of my exhibition is 'Perfectly Imperfect'."

Curious choice

The price range for these paintings starts from Rs 2,600 going up to Rs 13,000. One might consider it as just a price range, but Shifa has applied much of her evaluations to make the price range a multiple of 13; a number which is considered imperfect in itself. She explains, "The imperfection in life makes it all the more unique and fun."

What lies ahead?

She says, "I hope to start a summer workshop in Chandigarh for people to paint life as they see it. This is a relatively fresh concept."

Art in artist

The paintings exemplify Shifa's real-life experiences, but anyone can instantly connect with them. "These display my journey in life, my dilemma; of career of love and the choices I made," says Shifa. From acrylics to oil to crayons, the paintings progress swiftly into the depth of life towards the light, the brighter side. She adds, "Not sticking to one canvas, I like to break the monotony and experiment. I paint murals, ceramic pots and much more." Interestingly, Shifa has also painted the electricity pole of Paryavran Bhavan in Sector 19, Chandigarh, and has even gone ahead to paint her own car!

Designer touch
Modular kitchen offers a clutter -free and well organised space
Gurvinder Singh

A sleek set up For some, a kitchen is nothing short of a magic. Touch the panel, and it opens automatically to uncover the cutlery and utensils behind. Touch it again and the cover rolls back. Just take out the panel, unhinge it and put it back. Take out the drawer front, clean, put it again and ‘cluck’ it sits back. Modular kitchen are turning into a 'rocket science' because of the technology and precision being used to make these sleek and clutter-free kitchen. The best part is that they can be customised as per your wish!

"If you order beforehand giving us the dimensions, the fully-functional kitchen will be set up within two days," says Capt Mukesh Kumar, CMD, Kanu Kitchen Kulture. These kitchens guarantee safety. "We use ever lasting material in these kitchen ," shares Willy Kamm, export director, Hacker Asia. These can last about thirty years or more, he said. "The emulsions and lacquer we use is totally non-toxic. One can actually eat from the surface," he says.

"As labour is increasingly becoming expensive and the kitchen are self-servicing. One can just remove the panels, and do the cleaning once in six months," says Kumar. "These are termite resistant and maintenance free, he said. Another thing that makes modular kitchen the preferred choice is that they are easy to shift,” says Komal, a homemaker.

stress buster
Be positive
Renee singh

The Mayo clinic reports a lot of benefits associated with positive thinking. It improves overall health by increasing your ability to cope with stress and increases the lifespan. It makes you...

More resilient

Rather than falling apart in the face of stress , positive people have the ability to carry on and overcome their adversity. They don't give up.

Focus on your thoughts

In order to be a positive thinker you need to learn to analyse your thoughts. It's not really easy to focus on a stream of a conscious flow of thought. You have to make an effort to discipline yourself to do it.

Observe yourself objectively

When you encounter a challenging situation, notice how you think about all that's going on.

  • Do you engage in negative self talk
  • Do you mentally criticise yourself and others

This negative thinking is the major obstacle. Identifying such thoughts is the first step in overcoming them.

Focusing on undesirable aspects of a situation

This is a common negative thought habit. For example, you had a successful day but then you forget one urgent phone call you will override the success of the day with this one slip up and constantly worry over it. So, you ignore the good and the magnificent.

Self blame

Another common negative habit is that you tend to take blame for things, which are not your fault and are also not in your control. This type of negative thinking is particularly damaging to your psychological well being.

How to become a positive thinker

Changing the negative thought process can be a challenge and it's a process that takes time. We cannot expect our negative patterns to change just because we are giving positive affirmations to ourselves. The trick is keep on practicing.

Reflect on one specific area of your life that requires change

Stick to this one area of your life. When you find yourself settling into a particular negative thought spiral, quickly change your thoughts and put a positive spin on the situation.

Being a positive thinker is all about taking a pro active approach to your life. Instead of feeling hopeless and overwhelmed by life's challenges keep a positive overview. Look for positive and effective ways to resolve conflict and try and find creative solutions to the problems. This is a sure shot way to leading a stress free life.

Too late to apologise

Priyanka Chopra It seems that actress Priyanka Chopra is trying hard to change her image. She recently received a lot of criticism after her assistant Jiban Patra passed away in LA. The cause of his death is said to be a heart attack and all the paper work has been done for the body to be transported to India. However, Priyanka allegedly wasn't willing to shelve $15,000 from her pocket for the body. After the news came out, her office reacted and said that they're trying to get it back as soon as possible. Now all of a sudden, Priyanka seems to be engaging herself a lot more in social causes. She recently auctioned her old shoes for a charity. Well, it seems that she is getting an image makeover but it isn't helping. Is it guys?

Once upon a time

We came across this picture of a sweet and chubby kid and you will be surprised to know that it is none other than Alia Bhatt. Director Mahesh Bhatt tweeted a picture of his beautiful daughter Alia Bhatt and wrote: "Memory land! Not in our wildest dream did we imagine that this 'Sumo wrestler' would transform herself into ALIA BHATT." Well, we couldn't have guessed it either.

Doing her bit

Katy Perry Pop star Katy Perry said that performing her single Firework with an autistic fan, Jodi DePiazza, is her career highlight. The 28-year-old singer shared the stage with DePiazza, 11, at a taping of Comedy Central's Night of Too Many Stars last year, where DePiazza played the piano and sang with Perry, reported a website.

"Firework is the most important song I've written. Performing it with an autistic girl, accompanying her on piano and vocal harmony at a fundraiser, was the most important performance of my career," she said.

Perry, for her upcoming third album, has collaborated with producers and songwriters such as Max Martin and Dr Luke, both of whom had previously worked with her on Teenage Dream. "Max and Luke push me the most. As a team we have certain strengths. With Max, it's melody choices, Luke is production and I'm top line and melody. When I put myself on a timeline, when I tell the record company as to when I want to release the album, that's when the race starts. That's when I put pressure on myself," she said. — PTI

Vivian to leave Madhubala?

Vivian Dsena Vivian Dsena is undoubtedly one of the most popular TV stars. He has managed to carve a niche for himself while essaying the role of RK in Madhubala that is telecast on Colors. He is the face of the show and his chemistry with co-star, Drashti Dhami (Madhu), is scintillating.

However, the buzz is that Vivian is being replaced. A source said, "The problem is that sometimes Vivian wears a snobbish attitude, which is not liked by many." Vivian, however, denied the news. He said, "I have been getting many calls. The truth is that I am neither leaving, nor getting replaced."

So, when asked about where did this rumour emerge from, he quipped, "There are few people who love me so much that they want me out of Madhubala (winks). All I can say is that I am very much enjoying playing RK."

Hail the force to reckon with

Dheeraj Dhooper Dheeraj Dhooper, who recently replaced Shoaib Ibrahim as Prem in Colors' Sasural Simar Ka, feels lucky to be playing the lead role in the hit show. Moreover, the cherry on the cake is that he has shot for two ads with Soha Ali Khan and Vidya Balan. Here's what he has to say about his experience…

Tell us about the two commercials.

I shot for two ads, one with Soha Ali Khan and the other with Vidya Balan. Though I have done many commercials in the past, it felt superb to be sharing the screen space with two of the most talented women in the Bollywood industry.

How do you feel about the people's reaction to Prem's role?

People have reacted positively and I am very happy about that. It is very exciting to be playing Prem because the role has many layers.

Did you have any apprehensions while taking this role?

No. Prem is a family oriented man, who loves Simar to a degree beyond expression and he balances the two very well. I have been essaying the role in my own way.

Apparently, Shoaib quit the show because his role was not getting prominence, is that true?

I heard many rumours of why he quit and he may have had his reasons, but I do not want to comment on it.

You have done many shows, including Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Swarg and Zindagi Kahe - Smile Please, but none of them had you in the lead. Why?

I have always enjoyed playing the roles offered to me whether they were big or small. The point is to make an impact in the story, which my roles did. These roles led me to Prem.

Beaming with joy

Tanaaz Irani Ashley Lobo, who was present to judge the finale of Nach Baliye Shriman v/s Shrimati, along with the show's judges, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Terrence Lewis and Farah Khan, was happy to see Tanaz perform the Broadway. Tanaz was happy to learn from jazz guru and she was overwhelmed because of the praises that came her way.

Making it big

Sony Entertainment is working towards producing the upcoming historical show, Maharana Pratap. And, to make it even bigger, the makers are attempting to rope in popular actors for important roles. They have already looped Shakti Anand to essay the role of Maharana Pratap's father.
