SGPC allots 100 acres to Fatehgarh Sahib varsity
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 14 Dr Gurmohan Singh, Vice-Chancellor, while congratulating Sikhs on the auspicious day, said, “Guru Gobind Singh continued the mission of his predecessors with the creation of Khalsa.” While citing the examples of younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh and the great Sikh warriors like Baba Deep Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, Dr Singh motivated the students to
connect themselves with the rich heritage of Khalsa. He said on this historic day the SGPC has allotted 100 acres of land to the university in addition to the existing one. He informed that 10 per cent free seats (5 per cent for Sikh and 5 per cent for non-Sikh students) have been reserved for the higher education of the poor and deserving students in the university from the coming session. He thanked Avtar Singh Makkar, president, SGPC, and CM Parkash Singh Badal for the kind gesture. On the occasion, poem recitation and kavishari competitions were also organised in which students presented the life and blessings of Guru Gobind Singh along
with the narration of the incidence of creation of Khalsa. Turban tying
(Dastar Bandi) competition was also organised. The team of Ranjit Akhara (Nihang Singha), Patiala, and the university

DHABI CHOE
Dera Bassi, April 14 The incident was reported to police and veterinary doctors. Some villagers, who assembled at the incident site, said that some chemical and other pollution related industries situated on the banks of this choe, have been discharging their effluents which was becoming the reason of polluted water. A team of veterinary doctors led by Dr SK Gupta reached on the spot and tried their best efforts to save the animals. Doctors claimed that contamination was the main reason for the death of animals. Under the affect of toxic things, sheep became unconscious and some died. The owner of sheep said that nearly 150 sheep were grazing near the choe when this incident occurred. Notably, some years ago, some animals had also died after drinking the polluted water of this choe. After this incident, the administration and pollution control board had taken strict action against the erring industries. Residents said the water of hand pumps was also polluted due to the affect of this Dhabi choe water. Crops were also damaged of nearby fields. People had come under the grip of dangerous diseases after drinking the polluted water of hand pumps. Congress leader, Manpreet Kaur Dolly, and Mahila Congrsss leader, Balwinder Kaur Issapur, said the pollution control board should take appropriate steps to stop the discharging the of effluents in the choes. They demanded the compensation for the affected family. Meanwhile, the XEN Pollution Control Board, Joginder Singh, said board had been keenly watching the discharging of effluents in this choe. Some outsiders had been found while discharging the effluents in this choe at a time of night. He informed a truck of airport authority, Chandigarh, was found discharging effluents in the nearby Ghaggar River two days ago and a strict action would be taken against them. He said the board would take strict action against the erring people and industries regarding the death of sheep. |

Dept gets notice over water shortage
Kalka, April 14 The legal notice served by Advocate VK Bansal
to former municipal councillors, including Ujala Bakshi, Gurnam Dass, Harbhajan Singh and Krishan Chand interested that as per the norms fixed by the Public Health Department, minimum supply of water to a person was 135 liters per day, whereas 101 liter per day was being provided in Kalka, which was
inadequate. The notice also said that installing of water meters in the area was not
justified as the water was being supplied for only 20 minutes in summer, so question of wastage of water does not arise. |

UT police arrests vehicle thief
Chandigarh, April 14 The actual number of the scooter was found to be CH-03N-1934 and the accused had put a fake number CH-01-Y-4680 on it. The scooter was stolen from Sector-22 B and an FIR was also registered on March 17. The police recovered four two-wheelers and one three-wheeler from the accused. The police said the accused had studied till Class IX and he
was also involved in other theft cases. |

Battery cells stolen from Mani Majra telephone exchange
Chandigarh, April 14 Naiab Singh, JTO (building), BSNL Telephone Exchange, Mani Majra, Chandigarh, reported to the police that 308 old scrapped battery cells were stolen from near the exchange water pump of the Telephone Exchange Building last night. The value of the cells was Rs 1.2 lakh. A case of theft under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station. |

Drunk youth creates ruckus at discotheque
Chandigarh, April 14 He also told the police that the discotheque was operating beyond the prescribed time limit. The police reached the spot and found the youth in an inebriated state. On verification, a compromise was reached and no case was registered. Army man booked on rape charge
Mohali, April 14 Saini had surrendered after a police party went to his army unit based in Pathankot to nab him. The police party was informed the Lance Naik had been on leave since April 11. The police is reported to have put pressurised Saini’s relatives to reveal his whereabouts. The accused is a resident of Madhopur in Pathankot district. The law student, a resident of Sector 68 here, had told the police that she had first met Saini in a bus on March 25 while going from Chandigarh to her law institute. Later, they became friends. Saini once, took her to a house in Phase I, which he claimed belonged to his brother. He, then, allegedly raped her there on the pretext of marrying her. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered against him. He will be produced before the Ilaqa Magistrate tomorrow. |

Man booked for outraging modesty of woman
Mohali, April 14 She alleged that he wanted to have physical relations with her and when she refused, he used to beat her up and also threatened to throw acid on her face. She told the police that a brother of Firoz used to work with her in office where she was employed as an accountant. Firoz used to treat her as his sister but over the past two or three months his bebaviour towards her had changed. The police registered a case under the Section 354 of the IPC in this regard. |

Chandigarh, April 14 Aadil shot superb 73 and 76 and won the tight match by 2 strokes, in Ambala open golf championship, whereas, in the local tourney he shot 81 and 74 to finish runners-up. He collected 80 points in 3 matches participate in the All India final, to be held later. He has also won the CGA State Championship for consecutive third time in a row, this year. Aadil started his golf career at the age of four. Last year, he participated in the European Championship in Scotland.
