SGPC allots 100 acres to Fatehgarh Sahib varsity

Fatehgarh Sahib, April 14
Students and staff members of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, celebrated Khalsa Creation Day yesterday by organising various competitions. Dr Gurmohan Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university, presided over the ceremony. The students from different departments and colleges participated in the events with great enthusiasm.

Dr Gurmohan Singh, Vice-Chancellor, while congratulating Sikhs on the auspicious day, said, “Guru Gobind Singh continued the mission of his predecessors with the creation of Khalsa.”

While citing the examples of younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh and the great Sikh warriors like Baba Deep Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, Dr Singh motivated the students to connect themselves with the rich heritage of Khalsa.

He said on this historic day the SGPC has allotted 100 acres of land to the university in addition to the existing one.

He informed that 10 per cent free seats (5 per cent for Sikh and 5 per cent for non-Sikh students) have been reserved for the higher education of the poor and deserving students in the university from the coming

session. He thanked Avtar Singh Makkar, president, SGPC, and CM Parkash Singh Badal for the kind gesture.

On the occasion, poem recitation and kavishari competitions were also organised in which students presented the life and blessings of Guru Gobind Singh along with the narration of the incidence of creation of Khalsa. Turban tying (Dastar Bandi) competition was also organised. The team of Ranjit Akhara (Nihang Singha), Patiala, and the university students demonstrated the Sikh Martial Art (Gatka). Dr Kanwaljeet Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs; Dr Pritpal Singh, Registrar; Dr Bir Bikram Singh, Dean, Students’ Welfare, also addressed the audience.

DHABI CHOE
Contaminated water leaves 10 sheep dead

Ten sheep died after drinking the polluted water of Dhabi Choe today morning. The incident occurred when a Dera Jagadhari, a resident Omparkash was grazing his sheep near Dhabi Choe. Some of the sheep became unconscious after drinking the contaminated water. Over five sheep died on the spot and others died later due to the polluted water.

The incident was reported to police and veterinary doctors. Some villagers, who assembled at the incident site, said that some chemical and other pollution related industries situated on the banks of this choe, have been discharging their effluents which was becoming the reason of polluted water. A team of veterinary doctors led by Dr SK Gupta reached on the spot and tried their best efforts to save the animals. Doctors claimed that contamination was the main reason for the death of animals. Under the affect of toxic things, sheep became unconscious and some died.

The owner of sheep said that nearly 150 sheep were grazing near the choe when this incident occurred. Notably, some years ago, some animals had also died after drinking the polluted water of this choe. After this incident, the administration and pollution control board had taken strict action against the erring industries.

Residents said the water of hand pumps was also polluted due to the affect of this Dhabi choe water. Crops were also damaged of nearby fields. People had come under the grip of dangerous diseases after drinking the polluted water of hand pumps. Congress leader, Manpreet Kaur Dolly, and Mahila Congrsss leader, Balwinder Kaur Issapur, said the pollution control board should take appropriate steps to stop the discharging the of effluents in the choes. They demanded the compensation for the affected family.

Meanwhile, the XEN Pollution Control Board, Joginder Singh, said board had been keenly watching the discharging of effluents in this choe. Some outsiders had been found while discharging the effluents in this choe at a time of night. He informed a truck of airport authority, Chandigarh, was found discharging effluents in the nearby Ghaggar River two days ago and a strict action would be taken against them.

He said the board would take strict action against the erring people and industries regarding the death of sheep.

Dept gets notice over water shortage

Shiwalik Vikas Manch President VK Bansal and some of the former municipal councillors of the Kalka Municipal Committee have served a legal notice to the Secretary of the Public Health Engineering Department and the Engineer in Chief Public Health Engineering Departemnt, Haryana, over inadequate drinking water and sewerage system in Pinjore area.

The legal notice served by Advocate VK Bansal to former municipal councillors, including Ujala Bakshi, Gurnam Dass, Harbhajan Singh and Krishan Chand interested that as per the norms fixed by the Public Health Department, minimum supply of water to a person was 135 liters per day, whereas 101 liter per day was being provided in Kalka, which was inadequate.

The notice also said that installing of water meters in the area was not justified as the water was being supplied for only 20 minutes in summer, so question of wastage of water does not arise.

Hospital inaugurated

A heart and multi-specialty hospital was inaugurated by NK Sharma, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab Government. Briefing about the facilities available in the hospital, Ajay Grover, managing director of the hospital, said: “All the facilities which are available in the multi-specialty hospitals at Chandigarh will be available in this hospital, especially for all heart, ortho and gynecological problems.

Procedures like echocardiography, angiography, angioplasty, pacemaker and holter shall be provided in this hospital.”

On the occasion, a free medical check-up camp was also held on the hospital premises in which as many as 60 patients were checked.

Patiala, April 14
Parul Gupta, a hearing and speech impaired child, who brought laurels by bagging the top honours during the national tennis tourney for deaf children, was honoured by Patiala Mayor Amrinder Singh Bajaj.

She won a gold medal in the 18th National Games of Deaf Children for Tennis held at Divisional Sports Complex Garkheda (Aurangabad) from April 1 to 5.

She also bagged medals in both single and double categories.

Now, Parul Gupta is preparing in her full spirits for the 22nd Summer Deaf Olympics games to be held in Sofia (Bulgaria) in July, this year.

UT police arrests vehicle thief
Six stolen vehicles recovered

Chandigarh, April 14
The UT police arrested a vehicle thief and recovered six stolen vehicles and two mobiles from his possession. The police arrested 25-year-old Sushil Kumar, a resident of Burail, after putting up a barrier on the road dividing Sectors 23 and 24. He was riding on an LML Vespa scooter, which was also found to be stolen. The accused was then arrested.

The actual number of the scooter was found to be CH-03N-1934 and the accused had put a fake number CH-01-Y-4680 on it. The scooter was stolen from Sector-22 B and an FIR was also registered on March 17.

The police recovered four two-wheelers and one three-wheeler from the accused.

The police said the accused had studied till Class IX and he was also involved in other theft cases.

Couple, son booked for fraud

A Delhi-based couple and their son have been booked for a fraud amounting to Rs 22 crore. The police received a complaint from Rattan Mittal, General Manager, Satish Kumar, Manager, and Sukhwinder Kaur, Assistant General Manager of Punjab Agro Food Grain Corporation, Sector 28, who alleged that Dr SK. Jain, his wife and son Nischal Jain, all residents of Greater Kailash-11, New Delhi, and Reliance Polycrete Limited.

16A, FF, Lajpat Nagar-5, Ring Road, New Delhi took a loan of Rs 22 crore from the said Corporation Bank by submitting forged documents. A case has been registered.

Battery cells stolen from Mani Majra telephone exchange

A theft of scrapped battery cells worth Rs 1.2 lakh was reported at the BSNL Telephone Exchange, Mani Majra, last night. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Naiab Singh, JTO (building), BSNL Telephone Exchange, Mani Majra, Chandigarh, reported to the police that 308 old scrapped battery cells were stolen from near the exchange water pump of the Telephone Exchange Building last night. The value of the cells was Rs 1.2 lakh. A case of theft under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station.

Drunk youth creates ruckus at discotheque

High drama was witnessed at a discotheque in Sector 26, last night, when a youth from Ludhiana created ruckus in an inebriated state. Rahul Grewal was asked to leave the discotheque by the bouncers when he called the police saying that he had been beaten up.

He also told the police that the discotheque was operating beyond the prescribed time limit.

The police reached the spot and found the youth in an inebriated state. On verification, a compromise was reached and no case was registered.

Inspector Anokh Singh, SHO, Sector 26 police station, said the youth called the police as he was frustrated on being thrown out of the discotheque and thus created a ruckus.

A daily diary report has been lodged at the police station.

Army man booked on rape charge

Mohali, April 14
The local police has arrested an Army man on a charge of raping a student of a law institute at Kala Amb on the pretext of marrying her. According to the police, the accused, Lance Naik Munish Saini, surrendered at the Phase I police station here today.

Saini had surrendered after a police party went to his army unit based in Pathankot to nab him.

The police party was informed the Lance Naik had been on leave since April 11.

The police is reported to have put pressurised Saini’s relatives to reveal his whereabouts. The accused is a resident of Madhopur in Pathankot district.

The law student, a resident of Sector 68 here, had told the police that she had first met Saini in a bus on March 25 while going from Chandigarh to her law institute. Later, they became friends. Saini once, took her to a house in Phase I, which he claimed belonged to his brother. He, then, allegedly raped her there on the pretext of marrying her.

A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered against him. He will be produced before the Ilaqa Magistrate tomorrow.

Man booked for outraging modesty of woman

The police has booked a person on a charge of outraging the modesty of a woman. According to the police, the woman, who lived in Phase IV, Mohali, and hailed from Himachal Pradesh, had complained that Firoz Ahmed Shaffy used to allegedly send her obscene messages on phone.

She alleged that he wanted to have physical relations with her and when she refused, he used to beat her up and also threatened to throw acid on her face.

She told the police that a brother of Firoz used to work with her in office where she was employed as an accountant. Firoz used to treat her as his sister but over the past two or three months his bebaviour towards her had changed.

The police registered a case under the Section 354 of the IPC in this regard.

Aadil makes it to World Junior Masters

Twelve-year-old golfer Aadil Bedi, a class VII student of Vivek High School, booked his berth in the World Junior Masters-2013 to be held in Las Vegas (USA). Bringing more laurels to the City Beautiful, the golfer also topped the IGU’s merit list after winning in Ambala. He claimed the No. 1 spot after winning at Ambala and finishing runners-up in Chandigarh.

Aadil shot superb 73 and 76 and won the tight match by 2 strokes, in Ambala open golf championship, whereas, in the local tourney he shot 81 and 74 to finish runners-up. He collected 80 points in 3 matches participate in the All India final, to be held later. He has also won the CGA State Championship for consecutive third time in a row, this year.

Aadil started his golf career at the age of four. Last year, he participated in the European Championship in Scotland.

In his recent achievement, he has been selected in the World Junior Masters 2013. “I am working hard with my team and hopefully, I will bag the tournament. My recent performance will boast me to do perform well in future tournaments,” said Aadil.

City riders win 20 medals

The local horse-riders brought laurels to the City Beautiful after bagging a total of 20 medals during Delhi Horse Show (DHS) held in the capital from March 25 to April 7. A total of around 5,000 horse riders had participated in the event.

The Chandigarh Horse Riders Society (CHRS) had sent eight horses and 8 participants under the supervision of coach Omparkash. Two young riders, Abhijay Rana (10) and Gurbaaz Sandhu (11) bagged the young-achievers awards.

CBSE lift trophy

The annual sports meet of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jhanjeri, was organised, here today. Students of all academic-classes participated in various disciplines including cricket, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table-tennis, kho-kho, weightlifting and best-physique.

The department of the CBSE bagged the overall trophy in cricket, kho-kho, runners-up in badminton and table tennis. The ECE dept bagged the trophy of volleyball, cricket, volleyball while the civil department won the basketball and kho-kho matches. — TNS
