Patiala peg
Born and brought up in Canada, Garry gets dreams that take him to Patiala. Lajo, Punjab di kudi only dreams of Canada. Does Garry become her passport to the country of her dreams or not? Well, that’s what Patiala Dreamz tells and more.
Yet another offering by Pollywood, it promises to bring comedy, drama, romance and suspense mixed with some action. With Sarwar Ahuja (Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj winner) and Madalsa Sharma ‘Mithi’ in lead roles, the cast and crew of Patiala Dreamz were all chatty after wrapping up their Punjab schedule.
Time to experiment
Sarwar Ahuja, born and brought up in Hyderabad, spent all his summer holidays in Amritsar as his relatives live there; this became the motivation to sign up Patiala Dreamz. “I wanted to do something in my native tongue, got interested in the script, liked the crew and joined the team,” says Sarwar. Winning the talent hunt gave him the launch pad, “Winning a reality show is like an MBA from IIT, when you are looking for work, you have your credentials established,” says the lad who couple of movies and shows later, is in a mood to experiment. “Punjabi cinema is an upcoming industry, so here I am,” says Sarwar flashing his double-dimpled smile. On a break from television for at least six months, Sarwar is looking forward to making it big on big screen. And his idol is — Amitabh Bachchan. “I like the way Mr Bachchan could do a kuli and a Shahenshah with equal ease,” says the actor, who hopes to be famous and do stuff that makes people remember him after he is gone. His parting shot, “Money, name, fame, yes, are part of life. Best is to be a good human being and I put in as many efforts in that as striving to be successful.”
She has done Tamil, Telugu, Bollywood cinema and also a German film, Madalsa Sharma debuts in Punjabi cinema with Patiala Dreamz. “I liked the character of Reet, a mast bandi who lives in her world,” says the actor who claims to have grown up on the sets, his father being a director and mother an actor. “Punjabi is in the air with Honey Singh and his tribe, which made me go for one.” Happy at how the film has shaped up, Mithi wants to take it slow and steady. And she is no hurry to sign her next!
Ho ja rangeela re
BN Sharma has been a staple of Punjabi cinema. And, with each film he tries to do something different. He danced in Singh vs Kaur and plays Rangeela in Patiala Dreamz. “My family is not all too happy with this. They say, ‘ess umar vich kya kuch kar rahe hon?’ As Rangeela, he dresses up in rangeeley clothes, leads a colourful life and writes songs. Happy at Punjabi cinema making rapid strides, says BN, “We are proud that today our films have broken boundaries and reached audiences globally. ” mona@tribunemail.com

Cooking up some drama
Neither being a reality show participant is a joke nor being a judge on it! Tasks make you tense; emotions fly high and show producers as well as viewers demand drama. What we witnessed on Friday noon at The Taj Chandigarh was a show with a difference. MasterChef India 3 contestants Happy Singh and Ripu Daman Handa, along with their uber cool judge Kunal Kapoor, were made to climb the raised platform, asked to pose in a hundred different ways, including a call to climb the tree! They being in City Beautiful for Baisakhi celebrations, of course, were made to dance on numbers, including Yaar Anmulle and more…phew, some task!
Here are the three and their culinary journey. Home ground
Kunal Kapoor, a Delhi boy, spent his golden college years here, so he doesn’t mind anything...being too happy here. From a family of bankers, he with his bad maths did make a failed attempt at being one, when someone suggested trying hotel management. And there he was with his bags in Sector 42. Day 1 of the class and this failure turns a hero, as in T K Razdan’s he was the brightest, who could recognise and name all the basic ingredients (from jeera to dalchini) as well as basic equipment in the kitchen — courtesy his spending time with dad in the kitchen who would let him stir whatever he cooked while naming the ingredients aloud! Called on to sit in the front row, Kunal never looked back. Trials did come in his journey, as on his first Trade Test at Taj Palace Hotel, Delhi. A confident bloke, he presented the four course meal to the chef. A frown followed. Our young warrior held ground while quickly revising in his mind — ingredients good, garnishing good, presentation good... till a dish went flying just missing his ear, another followed till the meal was finished without even being tasted! The chef roared, ‘where is the spoon?’ Young Kunal held back his tears, parking the bad memory in the corner of his heart. It was only some months later that the lesson dawned. What his senior was trying to tell was that a chef’s duty doesn’t finish at cooking a fantastic meal, but serving the guest as he likes it. “That was a life-changer for me. I walked out of the kitchen to know what a guest needs.” Years on, Kunal is proud that he is able to present his profession at the national level. MasterChef has made cooking respectable but he is not resting till it comes on par with other professions. Chandigarh remains close to Kunal’s heart; Chaplin in 34, Hot Millions in 17, an old aunty in furniture market, who would feed hungry college-goers a big parantha and chai in just Rs 5! “Money was less, fun unlimited. We would hitchhike to 17, to celebrate birthdays at HM,” he reminiscences. MasterChef 3, Desi Tadka is the flavour this season. “Gone are the pakodas out of homes, mummies are cooking pastas and noodles. We want our regional delicacies to be documented and savoured.” Before he signs off, he wants you to see the MasterChef episode on Monday. “Shot in lush green mustard fields near Amritsar, it is a must watch.” This happy-go-lucky tattoo artist from Ajmer owns a dhaba restaurant that serves more than 40 kinds of chole bhature. “The day I got the title of Flavour-E-Azam during the show, it was an absolute win,” says our chef who is all positive to win the title! Gym to kitchen
From a family of doctors, Ripu Daman Handa, a gym trainer from Delhi, wanted to carve a niche. “Being at MasterChef, looks like I am on the path.” mona@tribunemaial.com

Message for life
Behind me is infinite power. Before me is endless possibility. Around me is boundless opportunity. Why should I fear?
… Imagine starting the day with this message; wouldn’t you be in a happy frame of mind to face the trials that come along? Well, people realise the importance of positive thoughts and using them. If earlier, almost everyone prayed at the break of the dawn (now many of us sleep around this time), the rituals are no more followed by many. It’s rather the phone or computer that we open our eyes to and here come a select few who ensure to drop in a happy thought in your inbox! What makes people begin the day with posting messages or writing emails and what bearing it has on those who receive it, we figure out! Loveleen Kaur, an MNC employee, shares the thought of the day with her small, close-knit group that she got friendly with while practicing Reiki. Now the group shares a positive SMS each morning. Says Loveleen, “The beauty of this is that on many days when one is caught in a problem, someone from the group sends a message that works as light in the darkness.”
Rohit Sharma, an advertising professional, like most of his friends, shares inspiring quotes within his circle. “Technology has brought us all on a single plane. Sharing is a way of life and more the merrier! Of course I do turn to my friends when I need and also believe in passing on what all happiness I come across in the form of a picture or thought.” For Priya and Sanjay Tandon, it all began with sharing a daily thought by Sai Baba within their circle. Another matching quote followed and a weekly story on the theme as well. Years on, the thoughts and stories led to the book — Sunrays for Sunday. “Honestly, when we did compile the first book, we did not have plans for other books. However, when we got such a positive response not only in India but abroad as well, we got down with books for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and working on Sunrays for Friday,” says Priya, who has also started illustrating the stories. The books are also available at Sai Baba Ashram Puttaparthi, have found its readers and been translated into different languages too. Ten Golden Nuggets to My Family is another positive book, which again started with an individual effort by Ashok Chitkara, who loved to share the valuable lines that he came across in his day’s reading. He would note down and e-mail ten good lines each day. The family looked forward to them the first thing to begin the day with and now the collection has been shaped into a book. Ten Golden Nuggets offers wonderful hints to organise family life and home. Says Chitkara, “It started as a daily practice to share good notes that I came across in my daily reading and finally took the form of a book.” Sometimes you need a little push to get back on
track!
Quote unquote
You cannot change the past, but your future is spotless. You can write on it whatever you want to. If you want to fly with eagles, don’t swim with ducks. The capability of a person is not how well he prepares for everything to go right. But how he stands up and moves on after everything has gone wrong. How wrong is it for a woman to expect the man to build the world she wants, rather than to create it herself? We are what we think. All that we are arises from our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world.

What a buzz!
They hope to stand true to the title of the property; create some flutter if not a ruckus. With a new property, there’s anyway some buzz that surrounds and with an opening party all the more! Buzz, the lounge cum resto-bar, opens in the heart of Chandigarh at Sector 17 and aims to stand true to its slang name.
“We have already made our presence felt in Delhi and it’s been a decade since we’ve been there. We wanted to replicate our success in Chandigarh,” says Sorabh Siag, the general manager. He adds, “We have envisioned this as a one-stop shop for people who want to dine, wine, chill, party and above all have a good time.” The place packs in a private dining area, a smoking lounge, a VIP lounge and a spacious balcony. While the interiors are spacious enough to accommodate a gathering of three hundred, however, the VIP lounge could have had a slightly better view and the interiors a slightly more innovative touch. Nevertheless, the smokers can rejoice by taking a puff bang in the middle of the place with an area enclosed specially for them. While we couldn’t spot any famous faces, at least the city’s familiar faces were present in full swing. Shares Sorabh Siag, the general manager, “We invited only 250 people, but as many as 491 turned up.” The resident DJ belted out popular club numbers and as far as the menu is concerned, the place packs in from Oriental classics to Mediterranean preparations to Indian delights. We guess that promises something for everyone. How much of buzz it creates, remains to be seen! manpriya@tribunemail.com

Gauahar's style secrets
When it comes to fashion, actress and model Gauahar Khan listens to her heart. In a quick chat, she dishes out her style mantra, fashion secrets and the most common mistake that women commit when following fashion trends.
How would you define your style? It's hard to define my style. On some days, I like to keep things causal. But on other days, I like to be trendy. My style depends on my mood. But I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of skirts. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion for me means comfort. Just wearing stylish clothes doesn't make you fashionable. It's the attitude you carry from within that makes you stand out and not the clothes. I like to style myself most of the time. Are you an impulsive shopper? What are your favourite shopping destinations? I'm not an impulsive shopper at all. Other than for important occasions, there is no specific time when I like to shop. If I like something at first glance, I usually end up buying it. My favourite shopping destinations are London and New York. What's the most common mistake women make when styling themselves? I think women sometimes do too much of everything. They fail to strike a
balance. Less looks classy. Another mistake that most women make is that they follow trends and celebrities blindly. Just because a dress looks good on a celebrity, it doesn't mean that it will look good on you. I think most women need to stop following trends and find a style that suits their body type and lifestyle. What are the five items or accessories that every woman should have in her wardrobe? I think a great pair of denims, comfortable footwear, a few classy bags, a fine watch and a few nice
tops are a must. What are your five essential beauty items? Perfume, mascara, a MAC makeup box, lip gloss
and a light blusher are a must for me. Who are your style icons? Jennifer Lopez and Rekha. I adore them both. Who are your favourite designers? My personal favourite designers include Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla and Narendra Kumar. I've worked with them several times and I really like their designs. Are you an accessories person? I like to wear my watch most of the time. A good wrist watch and earrings can make even a simple dress look smart. Some people accessorise too much. Keep a balance. Do not put on everything that you might have in your accessory collection. Match it according to your outfit. If you are wearing a good pair of earrings, keep your neck bare. It will look classy.

Kunal Kapoor speaks up
Kunal Kapoor is happily romancing Naina Bachchan who is Amitabh Bachchan's niece. He shares little known facts about himself and his quirks.
On turn-ons
I love sitting in a plane and driving fast cars. I love speed in everything. Someone asked me why and I said that I needed to put speed somewhere because my career is going slow. I love writing and I write a lot. In a girl, I notice her hands and her smile. Romantic streak
I have seen Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge 20 times and Hum Aapke Hain Koun 15 times and cried every time so yes, I am a hardcore romantic. I am not very possessive a lover or a boyfriend. A little possessiveness is nice. I love giving and getting space in a relationship. My ideal holiday spot would be South of France. Dream wedding
How can we say dream and wedding in one sentence? It is a contradiction. I think it is a nightmare to sit on a horse or an elephant. My ideal wedding would be in shorts and t-shirt. That will never happen so it is a dream.

I looked like Joan Rivers," Paltrow said. The Oscar winner also said she has learnt to ignore critics' opinions (of her looks after adopting a new laid-back approach to life) from her rapper friend Jay Z. "I don't hold on to fear as much as I used to. I've learnt a lot about genuinely not caring what strangers think of me. It's very liberating. It's very empowering and I've learnt a lot of that from Jay-Shawn Carter-Z, because his approach to life is very internal. It's a very good lesson to learn," she added. — PTI

Angry young man
Angad Hasija is upset and fuming with the treatment meted out to him by the makers of Savitri, a show on Life OK. While he is quitting the show, we talk to him about what went wrong.
Rumours are that you are angry with the makers of Savitri? Yes, it’s true. I took up the show because of the amazing experience that I had working with Star Plus while I debuted with Bidaai. So, I thought Life OK being Star’s sister channel would be a good bet too. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone off as I expected. What went wrong? I was previously told that I had a lead role in the show as a cop and would be in the show from the second episode onwards, but that didn’t happen. In the beginning, I shot for fifteen days in a month and this continued for three months. They wasted my time and didn’t pay my full fee for it; usually actors get a minimum guarantee fee per month. What do you plan to do? Well, I have quit. My character will soon be killed on the show. Have you been offered Bigg Boss? Indeed I was, but at that time I chose Savitri. I thought then that accepting a role in a serial was better than a reality show. But I guess some lessons are learnt the bitter way. What’s next? I have two offers and I am considering them.
Role call
Buzz is that after Shaan, Siddharth Shukla aka Shiv from the show Balika Vadhu on Colours is being considered for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He became quite popular post Balika Vadhu and the channel feels that he is a good bet. Other names being considered are Drashti Dhami and Karanvir Bohra while the rumours about the name of Sanaya Irani are also doing the rounds.
Love affair
Aakanksha Singh aka Megha of Sudhir Sharma’s Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha: Season 2 is in love. She has revealed about her affair of six years with boyfriend Kunal Sain who is a marketing professional. What a coincidence that the name of her co-star in the show is Kunal too! Baisakhi in Bani’s style
We all know that a fashion designer is capable of changing the trends of the fashion world, but little did we know that a designer is also capable of changing the trends of the entire television industry. Shefali Sharma, the lead of Colors show Bani… Ishq Da Kalma, has been known to add her own touch to the look and appearance of her first on-screen character, Bani.
Celebrating her first Baisakhi away from home, Shefali did not let go off the opportunity to dabble and add her touch to her Baisakhi costume designed for a special photo-shoot. Insisting on traditional Baisakhi attire instead of a normal Punjabi look, Shefali added her own touch to the koti (shrug), giving it a rich blue colour, making the traditional outfit look even more exotic. She also designed a contemporary tikka for herself as well as Rajji, played by Neha Bagga. Extremely excited about celebrating Baisakhi with her now extended family, Shefali talks about her experience, she says, “It wasn’t very difficult for me to bring out the real look of Baisakhi. The designer had already done a great job and I simply added a few details here and there because I just couldn’t resist the temptation.” With actors now designing their own characters, we definitely see a trend change right around the corner! Take two
Sanjeevani fame Mihir Mishra, who hasn’t been seen on television for a while now, seems to have returned. The buzz is that he will appear in an episode of Fear Files on Zee. Papiya Sengupta will be paired opposite him in a story about an actress, Chondrima, who marries Mihir, but unfortunately he dies. And then his family performs black magic on
Chondrima.

Breath of fresh air
All you Ranbir Kapoor fans-now there is an ultimate song coming your way for he is back with a yet another electrifying number, Badtameez Dil, from his upcoming movie, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The music of the film has been directed by Pritam Chakraborty and Amitabh Bhattacharya has written the lyrics of the song that has been sung by Benny Dayal. Fun filled
The minute I heard this song, I went barmy! Let's keep Ranbir's good looks aside, the fact that the song is so peppy and wacky is what goes in its favour. Everytime I hear this song, no matter where I am or what I am doing, I feel like dancing. Plus it brings a smile on my face. It's a fun song. Inderjeet Kaur, student Wacky works
This song is so funny, especially the lyrics, and the way Ranbir Kapoor enacts the whole song is the icing on the cake. Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone, with her stunning looks, takes the cake, the bakery and the baker's son. She looks ravishing in a saree. The entire song is a recipe for success. Angad Singh Gill, student Packed with energy
I would give Bollywood heart-throb Ranbir Kapoor due credit for injecting the famous 'Shammi Kapoor' moves in his dance, which add instant energy to the sound as well as the look of the song. The beauty of the song, Badtameez Dil, lies in the fact that it is a typical Bollywood dance number. I love it to the core and this song has been playing in my car for a couple of days now. I am sure it is going to remain a huge hit Simranjit Singh, businessman -

Love & war
Commando: A One Man Army
Directed by Dilip Ghosh and produced by Vipul Shah this action thriller features Vidyut Jamwal, Pooja Chopra and Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead roles. Treat for eyes I remember watching Vidyut Jamwal essaying a negative role in the movie Force and though he came across as an intense actor, I was not expecting him to do a lead role in his second film. Now, after watching the film I believe that he is here to stay and for good. I love his raw looks in the film. Also, his acting skills add to the character. Subah
Arora, student Plot that matters Save the fact that I love action thrillers, but of Bollywood’s attempt at making action movies so far has not been at par with the ones made by Hollywood. However, the plot of Commando has come to surprise me and I really think that it is a good movie with a good storyline. It has just the right blend of romance and action, which is praiseworthy. Varun Jain, Businessman Keeping it steady The movie was engaging right from the beginning and it keeps the pace rolling throughout. There is not a dull moment in the film, but it is just a one-time watch. Nikhil
Verma, Student Nautanki Saala
This film is a romantic comedy directed by Rohan Sippy and features Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunaal Roy Kapur in the male lead roles along with Pooja Salvi and Evelyn Sharma as female leads. Also, Abhishek Bachchan is seen in a cameo role in the film. The story of this film focuses on the bonding and friendship of Ram Parmar (Ayushmann Khuranna) and Mandar Lele (Kunaal Roy Kapur). Comedy of errors I like the film for its dialogues and the plot. Besides being exceedingly interesting, the film engages the audience because it is realistic. Also, Ayushmann Khurana and Kunaal Roy Kapoor are a delight. I liked the storyline of the film too. Siddharth Sharma, Student Funny and Wacky I was in splits all through the film and I like the way they have treated
humour. The makers have left the film to the viewer’s perspective and the film has a consistent flow of humour throughout. I don’t mind watching the movie yet again! Vishavjit Singh, Student -
