MC acts tough on defaulters
Chandigarh, April 12
An MC worker disconnects a water connection at the Sector 21 booth market in Chandigarh on Friday. In an aggressive drive, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today disconnected water connections of 18 defaulters. The MC initiated proceedings against consumers who have not cleared their water bills or are having dispute with the MC.

Four get life term for killing student
Chandigarh, April 12 
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Preeti Sahni, today sentenced four persons to life imprisonment for the murder of a 21-year-old hotel management student in June 2010.

Extendible artificial bone saves child’s arm from amputation
Chandigarh, April 12
Eight-year-old Mansi had developed bone cancer in her left arm and was in pain for the past one year. By the time she was taken for consultations to doctor, her half arm (from shoulder till the elbow) suffered damage as the cancer had already reached an advanced stage. Amputation of the arm was the only possibility left.

Ex-UT adviser moves application
Chandigarh, April 12
Former UT Adviser Lalit Sharma today moved an application in the CBI court for giving his submissions in the theme-cum-amusement park case in which he is framed as an accused. The application of Sharma has been allowed by the CBI court today.

Probe recommended against a serving, two retired inspectors
Chandigarh, April 12
The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) today recommended a departmental inquiry against two retired inspectors and a serving SHO of the Sector-19 police station, as they had allegedly shown undue favour to an accused in a trespassing case.

Victim’s family meets Mayor, civic body Commissioner
Chandigarh, April 12
The victim’s family come out of the office of the MC Commissioner at Sector 17, Chandigarh, Family members of 33-year-old Harpreet Singh Sodhi, who died in a road accident involving stray cattle, met the Mayor and the MC Commissioner, today. Harpreet’s mother Jagwinder Kaur, wife Gurpreet Kaur, one-year-old daughter, and other family members, first met MC Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh. The commissioner assured them that though there was no provision of compensation in the MC, they would take up the issue with the UT Administration.

70 challans issued to violators
Chandigarh, April 12
In a special anti-encroachment drive, the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation today removed encroachments from various markets of the city and issued 70 challans to violators.

High drama at Sec-17 ISBT

Bhawan representatives air grievances

The representatives of bhawans today demanded that the UT Administration should stop issuing notices to them for holding marriage functions. In a meeting held between the UT officials and the representatives of 68 bhawans in the city, the latter stated that instead of harassing them by sending notices, the Administration should allow them to hold marriage functions at these bhawans.

Drug trail takes police to Delhi
Chandigarh, April 12
Two days after the UT police arrested a Nigerian in a case of drug peddling, a police team was dispatched to Delhi along with the accused to get to the root of drug peddling racket. The Nigerian, Samsom, aka Frank, was taken to Delhi today. The accused used to supply cocaine to a number of college students who used to order the drugs on phone, the police said.

26 stray cattle impounded
Chandigarh, April 12
In continuation to their drive against stray cattle menace, the municipal corporation impounded 26 stray cattle last night. These cattle were impounded from various parts of the city. MC officials said the cattle impounded would not be released, as keeping of animals within the municipal limits was not permissible.

Education Department issues notice to private schools
Chandigarh, April 12
The Education Department today issued fresh notice to private schools strictly asking them not to convert their reserved seats under the RTE Act to general category till further instructions are issued.

Minority status for schools opposed
Chandigarh, April 12
The UT Education Department has strongly opposedgranting of minority status to three of the top schools in the city — Vivek High School, Sector 38; St Kabir School, Sector 26; and New Public School, Sector 18 —in its reply filed yesterday to the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutes (NCMEI), New Delhi, during the resumed hearing of a petition filed by these schools.

Admn in touch with pvt schools for making bus fare affordable
Chandigarh, April 12
The Chandigarh Administration has rolled out 40 buses, 20 each for morning and evening, for ferrying the government school students. The administration is also in touch with private schools across the city for making buses more affordable for students.

Paper-setting by external teachers leading to goof-ups in BCom exams, say officials

The policy of Panjab University which allows only external faculty to set the BCom papers has again been held responsible for recurring goof-ups. Recently, the question paper of cost accounting during BCom second-year exam, which was supposed to carry both theoretical and numerical-type questions, was completely theoretical in nature.

ASI killed in accident
Ropar: An assistant sub-inspector was killed in a road accident last night. The deceased was identified as Taljinder Singh (52). He was posted at Morinda. Taljinder was going towards Kurali when his Indica car collided with a Himachal Roadways bus near Charheri village.

Police remand for Moga DTO, 3 others
Mohali, April 12
The Moga District Transport Officer (DTO) and three others were today produced in a local court which remanded them in police custody till April 15. Moga DTO Gurtej Singh was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 16,000 from a transporter. His driver Surjit Singh, gunmen Didar Singh and Kuldeep Singh were also arrested. All the four were arrested from the district administrative complex, Moga, yesterday. Avtar Singh of Punjab-Gujarat Roadlines had alleged that the DTO had been harassing him as his trucks passed through the district on the way to Gujarat.

High Court wants UT to set up another vegetable market
Chandigarh, April 12
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Adviser to the UT Administrator to immediately convene a meeting for considering the feasibility of setting up another vegetable market in the city.

Fraudster woman sent to police remand
Mohali, April 12
A Ludhiana-based woman, who was arrested on the charge of fraudulently selling a plot of an NRI woman, was produced in a local court today which remanded her in police custody till April 15. Neelam had allegedly sold an 8 marla plot in Sector 68, posing as its owner, Paramjit Kaur. A case of cheating has been registered against the suspect. Paramjit Kaur returned to India after 12 years and approached the GMADA authorities.

2 eve-teasing cases in city
Chandigarh, April 12
Crime against women is on the rise with the UT police registering two separate cases of eve-teasing and assault on women today. In the first case, a girl staying as a paying guest in the city reported to the police that three persons identified as Harjot Singh, Nikesh Raj and Gurpreet Singh, residents of Sector 15, eve-teased her at a park in Sector 15. She said she was returning home from market when the youths misbehaved with her.

Two cases of cheating reported
Chandigarh, April 12
The UT police registered two separate cases of cheating today. In the first case, JP Yadav of Corporate Office, Sector 9, reported to the police that Ram Kumar Garg, a resident of Sector 33, took loan of Rs 8.5 crore from Corporate Office, SCO No. 12-13, Sector 9, Chandigarh, on fake documents. A Case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered.
