Woman dies undergoing treatment at hospital
Ludhiana, April 4
High drama was witnessed at a private hospital near the Income Tax Colony in Tagore Nagar when a woman who was undergoing treatment for a gallbladder stone died here today. The husband of the victim alleged that there was negligence on the part of doctors at the hospital.

Kin stage dharna over patient’s death
Ludhiana, April 4
Relatives of Mini Chopra, a pregnant woman, who allegedly died during treatment a few days ago, staged a dharna outside Kiran Hospital and demanded action against the hospital authorities.

Railway link to Chandigarh still awaiting completion

City residents will have to wait for some more time before the Chandigarh- Ludhiana railway link becomes functional, as the construction work on the track has not yet been completed. The rail link from Ludhiana to Chandigarh is eagerly awaited by passengers, as it will save their commuting time.

Now, file your quarterly VAT return after April 9
Ludhiana, April 4
The Excise and Taxation Department has stopped uploading the VAT quarterly returns till April 9 as a few changes are being made in the return forms. The new VAT 15 form for the fourth quarter of 2012-13 will be available from April 9 onwards. "All concerned are requested not to download the form before April 9 and to start e-filing for fourth quarter 4 after April 9," said Anurag Verma, excise and taxation commissioner.

The multi-storey parking of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) located at the Zone-A Headquarters of the civic body at Mata Rani Chowk here is in midst of a controversy with the City Mayor, Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, and the senior MC officials taking a divergent stand after expiry of the contract for parking lot on March 28, 2013.

Man dies of injuries following brawl with friend
Ludhiana, April 4
A 35-year-old man, who had suffered serious head injuries following a fight with a friend, died at a local hospital here today. The victim has been identified as Mohd Noor Alam. The police has arrested the accused, Sabre Mohammed, and started the investigation.

Farm varsity initiates inquiry into sale-of-soil case
Ludhiana, April 4
The Punjab Agricultural University has finally initiated an inquiry in the last year’s sale-of-soil case that reportedly led to a loss of Rs 60 lakh to the varsity. The PAU authorities reportedly also stopped payments to the contractor concerned.

9,000 children in district suffer from various disabilities, finds official survey
Ludhiana, April 4
Over 9,000 children in the district are suffering from various disabilities. The real number could be much higher than these official figures. Last year, the number of such students stood at 12,147. This year it has fallen to 9,040 as students of private schools have not been included in the official survey conducted by the Inclusive Education for Disabled (IED) department.

Do not rebuke or punish hearing-impaired children at school or home if they find it difficult to express themselves as effectively as other children. Any sudden stress can lead to serious cardiac problems in such children and can even cause death.

Couple held for thrashing bailiff
Ludhiana, April 4
A couple was arrested for allegedly thrashing a bailiff of the district court who had gone to issue summons to the woman in a cheque bounce case. The bailiff, identified as Karamjit Singh, had allegedly grabbed the woman by her arm, when he visited her residence at Kailash Nagar in Jodhewal Basti yesterday.

29-yr-old woman commits suicide
Machiwara/Khanna, April 4
A teacher of a local convent school committed suicide after she failed to get a better job and proper match for her marriage. The 29-year-old woman was a resident of the town and had done MA, PGDCA along with IELTS. At present she was doing BEd.

Police books two in murder case
Ludhiana, April 4
The Division No 2 police has booked two persons for murdering a man seven months back. The accused have been identified as Sheru and Gori, both residents of Khud Mohalla. In October last year, the victim, Sohan, died under mysterious circumstances.

Bar poll: 2,149 to decide fate of 23 candidates
Ludhiana, April 4
The District Bar Association is all set to elect its new office-bearers for the next term in the annual election tomorrow. A total of 2,149 voters will decide the fate of 23 aspiring candidates. On the last day of canvassing, the candidates left no stone unturned to woo voters. They along with their supporters went from chamber to chamber, requesting members to cast vote in their favour.


Arjun lifts 135 kg to win bench-press contest
Ludhiana, April 4
Around 150 members of a local health club took part in a bench-press competition on the premises of the club in Shastri Nagar yesterday. Arjun Sapra was declared the overall champion for lifting a weight of 135 kgs. The coach and director, Prime Bodies Health Club, Nishchay Sachdeva lifted 150 kg to motivate his students.
