Tau Devi Lal Stadium second home for street dogs
Panchkula, April 2 The pole-vault pit (also known as Landing Bed), that costs over Rs 7 lakh (IAAF-approved with specifications 600 cm x 800 cm x 80 cm) has become a new home for these dogs. A visit to the stadium in the morning hours reveals the staff's apathy to stop the dogs from tearing off the foam of the pit. "I am aware of the situation. The dogs come from the nearby colonies and damage our property. The area is covered with fencing but even then, the dogs make their way inside the stadium. The pole vault pit is the most damaged equipment as they play with the foam and find comfort in sleeping there. I have ordered the ground staff to look into the matter," said Ashwini, District Sports Officer, Panchkula. When asked about the steps taken to restrict the dogs from entering the premises, the officer added, "I will ask the staff to keep an eye on it." The situation turns from bad to worse when the dogs, in order to save their home (pit), attack players and other members of the stadium. "Due to the bad condition of the pit, it is difficult to practice here. The chances of falling on earth during landing increase due to uneven patches of the foam. The stadium is already facing lack of facilities and this has added more to our woes," said an athlete. Another player seconded him and said, "The authorities are turning a blind eye to the reality. The uneven patches of foam are coated with a bad quality of covers. The authorities only concentrate on upgrading cricket and games like pole vault, other athletic events are being ignored on a regular basis. The dogs are dangerous and their bite could cost us our sports career." "I carry a stick with me these days to avoid a dog bite. Since my child comes to play here, I have to accompany her. The present scenario of the stadium is grim. The sports facilities should be well-maintained and the authorities should perform their work," said Satish Kaushal, a resident. He said, "Except the pit, the drinking water facility is also pathetic. Due to the basic shortcomings, players opt to practice in Chandigarh-based stadiums. Lack of basic facilities is the main reason behind the lesser number of sportspersons here." |
