In an interesting case, a clerk of the education department, who was allegedly found guilty of an embezzlement of several lakhs of rupees, has still been working at his job for the past few years without facing any action for his act.

Even the police, which had registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust of public (Section 420 and 409 of the IPC) at the Kurali police station on June 12, 2010, is yet to present the challan in the court till date. The police did not arrest him in the case.

Giving details, Karnail Singh Sandhu, president of the Government Teacher Union alleged that Harinder Singh, the clerk in question was suspended by the department's then director (administration) Avtar Chand Sharma on September 10, 2010 on the charges of embezzlement of funds from public account. "Interestingly, his suspension was revoked by the next director (administration) on the condition of depositing of the embezzled amount with interest following which he had deposited around Rs 2.75 lakh," said Sandhu adding that deposit of amount by him just indicated admission of his illegal act. Then the clerk was transferred to District Education and Training Institute, Roopnagar.

Demanding strict action against Harinder Singh, Shiv Kumar and Harnek Singh Mawi, general secretary and press secretary of the union, said he should be dismissed from the services immediately. "We also demand action against the director who had revoked his suspension," said the office-bearers.

Notably, the union members had brought the case into light in 2006.

On being contacted, Harinder Singh termed the allegations of embezzlement against him as baseless.

He claimed he had deposited the amount as he was told to do by the authorities. "I don't know why they (union) are after me," said Harinder Singh.

Age becomes no bar for these aged people, when it comes to keeping themselves fit. At athletics track of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, to participate in the veteran athletics meet, they won various medals and left spectators with a message ‘to win the world on your own’.

“I am here to participate in the games from Kharar, Mohali. Winning medals becomes a secondary thing. All we have is self-satisfaction that we are old, we are still young to tackle hard things in a good manner,” said 65-year-old Paramjeet Kaur.

Another athlete said: “It feels good that at this age we are able to win medals and have the courage to run short sprints like 200 mt or 100 mt. Back in or area, there are various rural games that are organised for only aged people. Participation in those games always acts as a real motivation. I suggest my grandchildren to never loose hope and keep themselves fit, so to bear pressure in every situation,” said 75-year-old Rajrani Nayyar.

As many as 250 athletes, from Punjab and Chandigarh, participated in this 33rd edition of the State Veteran Athletics Championship. I believe these kind of events are the best way to keep yourselves alive and know about your power. There are so many of us and it gives immense pleasure to compete with them,” said 53-year-old Charanjeet.

“I am 35 and probably the youngest among all. But everyone here is as fit as like an 18-year-old young. They are real motivators and live examples to live a healthy, happy life. Many of them might not have won medals. But they have certainly left their impression,” said Neelam Sharma.

During the championship, the organisers will also select the athletes, to represent the city in the upcoming 33rd National Masters Athletics Championship to be held from May 10 to 12 at Trivandrum (Kerela).

“I am a farmer by profession. But participating in the long jump is my passion. I started it form participating in the rural games and after that I participated in almost all the veteran games,” said Balwant Singh from Khanpur village near Chaukaumar Sahib.

87-year-old, still young

What will you do at the age of 87? Surely you won’t dance on an athletics track, participate in 200 mt race and 5 km walk and sing Punjabi songs on microphone.

All the participants are well-known to me. I am famous as like a hero. What else does anyone want? I started my athletics career during a very bad phase. Now it turns out to be the real entertainer for my life,” said Bhanot, who sings and dance, after his every event.
