Abohar
Minor drowns in reservoir
: A teenager, Sandeep Kumar (16), drowned in a water reservoir at Amarpura village, located on the Abohar-Hanumangarh road, here on Tuesday. Family sources said the victim’s father, Roshan Lal, had sent the boy to fetch water when he slipped into the tank. When Sandeep did not return, his father came to check and found the victim dead.

Judicial Academy gets new director
: Senior advocate-cum-former Professor and Chairman of Panjab University's Department of Laws Dr Balram K Gupta has been appointed as the Director of National Judicial Academy at Bhopal by the Chief Justice of India. Dr Gupta was also Honorary Dean in the Faculty of Law, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He has devoted 45 years to teaching and practising of law. Dr Gupta says his innings in academics and practising law has been very satisfying and is looking forward to the new challenges.

Three held in extortion case
: The Moonak police has arrested three persons for allegedly demanding extortion money from a factory owner. Senior Superintendent of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar said Bitu Rao and two others had threatened to kidnap factory owner Lajpat Rai’s son and sought Rs 30 lakh. He said a trap was laid and the police arrested the three accused along with Rs 2 lakh extortion money, three pistols and 12 cartridges.

Farmers: Release motor connections
: The Punjab unit of the Bharati Kisan Union (Ekta) has threatened to launch a statewide agitation if the power department failed to release 3,76,215 motor connections pending throughout in the state since 1990. The union has given an ultimatum to the state government till April 30 to meet their demand.

One dies of heart failure
: A retired headmaster Sharanjit Singh (65), a resident of Nonne village, died on way to the hospital after he was humiliated by the residents of his own village on Tuesday. A case under Sections 304, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against six persons of the same village.

6-year girl dies
: A six-year-old girl Salima of Kurukshetra, who along with her sister was injured when a car hit them near Baba Mazaar, succumbed to her injuries during her treatment at the PGI, Chandigarh, on Monday night. The police has registered a case.

Opium husk seized
:
The police arrested Shyam Lal, running a shop on the National Highway 21, from Dahoti-Chadole village, about 30 km from here, on Sunday night. The police found 1.6 kg of ‘bhukki’ (opium husk) during a search.
