Manpreet’s son involved in brawl
Chandigarh, March 10
In yet another case of highhandedness of the kin of VIPs in the city, Arjun Badal, the 19-year-old son of the Manpreet Badal, president of the People’s Party of Punjab, allegedly attacked a 25-year-old youth in Hotel Sunbeam at Sector 22 last night.

Chandigarh, March 10
The victim, Bhagwati Devi, with her grandson. Unidentified assailants killed a 65-year-old woman at her residence near a tubewell at Dhanas and decamped with cash and jewellery after taking her family members, including four children, hostage late last night.

Two killed, three hurt in accident
Panchkula, March 10
The Shivratri celebrations turned sour for a Shimla family when two persons were killed and three suffered injuries after the car they were travelling in rammed into a tree near Maddawala on NH 73 this morning.

6-year-old boy goes missing
Panchkula, March 10
A six-year-old boy, a resident of Sector 12, Panchkula, went missing from Shiv Temple at Saketri during the Shivratri fair on Sunday. The victim, Ajay, went missing in the morning. The police has registered a case under Section 365 (kidnapping) of the IPC.

Co-founder of Vivek Nursery passes away
Chandigarh, March 10
Joyshri Lobo, daughter of Sharda Dutt, shares her mother's memory at her residence in Sector 19, Chandigarh, on Sunday. Sharda Dutt, one of the co-founder members of Vivek Nursery and Preparatory School, passed away at her residence in Sector 19 yesterday. It was the first preparatory school of the city established in 1966.

World Glaucoma Week: An effort to light up the dark

Old age home for ex-servicemen to come up in P’kula
Chandigarh, March 10
The Army is setting up old age homes for ex-servicemen and widows who do not have any support in the twilight of their lives. A pilot project is being launched to set up the first such home in Panchkula.

Seminar on Indian culture
The Patanjali Yog Samiti and the Bharat Swabhiman Trust (regd), Chandigarh, organised a seminar titled "Vichar" on Indian Culture and Heritage at Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Sector 27, Chandigarh. Devinder Sharma, an author and an activist, was the chief guest on the occasion. Vijay Saihgal, former Editor, Dainik Tribune, was the keynote speaker. Justice MM Aggarwal (retd) and Justice SN Aggarwal (retd) also addressed the gathering.

Visual impairment no barrier for them

The phrase “where there’s a will there’s a way" proved true for two Panjab University students who despite being visually impaired managed to get degrees in higher education. While one successfully completed her PhD, another one bagged the gold medal in MA, Music.

Centre to introduce Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan soon: Minister
Chandigarh, March 10
With an aim to reforming the higher education system in states, the Central Government is soon going to introduce the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Under it, the states coming up with education reforms will get additional funds from the Centre.

Five booked for fraud
Dera Bassi, March 10
The local police has booked five persons on the charge of fraud in a land deal case. All the accused are absconding. In his complaint, Balwant Singh, of Papri in SAS Nagar, alleged he had entered into a land deal through property dealer Kuldip Singh of Zirakpur. In 2009, He had reportedly paid Rs 23 lakh to one Diblaag Singh of Kurali for a piece of land in Lalru.

School heads to be booked for violations by bus drivers
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 10
The local police in collaboration with the district transport office organised a seminar on traffic rules for schoolchildren, school bus drivers and heads of schools here today. SSP HS Mann said if a driver failed to obey the traffic rules and violated directions of the apex court, the head of the school would be booked along with the driver.

Three die in road mishaps
Banur, March 10
Three persons, including a two-year-old girl, were killed in two separate accidents near here yesterday. Balbeer Singh (22), of village Machli, and his two-year-old daughter Simmi were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on rammed into a parked truck near a barrier on the Chandigarh-Rajpura road. While Balbeer and Simmi died on the spot, his wife Balwinder Kaur, who was accompanying them, was injured.

National debate contest concludes
Patiala, March 10
The National Parliamentary Debate Competition, organised annually by the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), concluded today. The teams that reached the semifinals were Ramjas, New Delhi, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, Thapar University, Patiala, and NLU, Jodhpur. Ramjas won the trophy and Punjab Engineering College was declared the runner-up.

Fraudster sent to Patiala Jail
Mohali, March 10
Bina Ali (55), a proclaimed offender, has been sent to the Patiala Jail, following court’s order here today. The jail authorities had denied lodging the accused of 11 fraud cases yesterday, following the local courts yesterday’s orders.

Man gets 18 months in jail for bigamy
Chandigarh, March 10
Former president of the Moga district Congress Tara Singh Sandhu has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for bigamy. The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 under the Section 494 of the IPC.

One held for impersonation
Chandigarh, March 10
The police today booked a Haryana resident for impersonation. Sunita Ranjan, supervisor, L Aggarwal DAV Model School, Sector 7-B, alleged that Rohan Kumar, a resident of Rajokri village in Navida district, Bihar, appeared for the SSC exam in place of Anoop Kumar, a resident of Mudlana village in Sonipat.

Youth arrested with stolen motorcycle

The police today arrested a 22-year-old youth and recovered a stolen motorcycle from his possession. The accused has been identified as Dharambir, a resident of Kansal village.
