CM meets GOC-in-C on land issues
: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday sought additional middle-rung Army officers for various road projects during a meeting with the GOC-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra. Several land issues were discussed at the meeting. The Army Commander said the transfer of land to the Army at Bir Sarangwal was long overdue.

Medico booked for raping teenager
: On the complaint of a 17-year-old girl belonging to Dona Mattar village under Guruharsahai sub-division, the police has booked Kulwinder Singh, a medical practitioner, for allegedly raping her. Varinder Pal Singh Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur, said the victim, a Class XI student, had alleged the accused offered her lift while she was returning from school. He took her to an isolated place. He offered her tea laced with sedatives and raped her.

Drug peddler gets 3-year jail term: Additional District and Sessions Judge Sukhwinder Kaur sentenced drug peddler Ajaib Singh alias Baba to three-year imprisonment on Friday. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against Baba of Bukkanwala village on May 22, 2005 after 34.5 kg of poppy husk was recovered from his possession. During the course of trial, he jumped court hearings and was declared a proclaimed offender. He was later arrested by the local police.

Rs 200 crore for waste management
: An amount of Rs 200 crore will be spent in the next 18 months to improve liquid waste management in rural areas of the state under the first phase of the World Bank project. This was stated by Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Water Supply and Sanitation, Punjab, here. As many as 100 villages will be provided with the advanced sewerage system. “After completion of the first phase, a total of 1,000 more villages will be covered under the project,” said Suresh Kumar.

2 youths killed in accident
: Two youths were killed while another injured when a motorcycle hit a pedestrian here on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Kuldeep Kumar of Bandlehri village and Gurdip Singh of Nangli village. The injured, Ravi Kumar of Majari village, has been admitted to PGI, Chandigarh. The police said Ravi and Gurdip were going towards Nangal on a motorcycle when they hit Kuldeep near Bandlehri village.

2 Nangal jewellers surrender Rs 1.5 cr: An amount of Rs 1.5 crore was collected during an income tax survey conducted on three jewellers of the town on Friday. A 30-member team of tax sleuths headed by Additional Commissioner, Income Tax, Rajinder Singh had surveyed the three shops. The Additional Commissioner said Vijay Jewellers surrendered Rs 1.10 crore while Baldev Jewellers deposited Rs 40 lakh. Tax evasion of Rs 1.5 crore was detected during the scrutiny of accounts at Sanan Jewellers and the amount was expected to increase, said Rajinder Singh. — TNS

Excise inspector held on graft charge
: Officials of the Vigilance Bureau on Thursday allegedly caught an excise inspector while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a liquor contractor. Acting on a tip-off, a Vigilance team laid a trap and nabbed Rajnish Kumar, posted in the Excise Department in Malerkotla, red-handed. Complainant Subhash Chander claimed that the accused was allegedly demanding the bribe by threatening to challan his liquor vends. A case has been registered. 

Congress councillor joins Akali Dal: A local Congress municipal councillor, Jaswinder Singh Prince, on Friday joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the presence of party general secretary Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Parkash Chand Garg. Sangrur municipal council president Iqbaljit Singh Punia was also present on the occasion. Dhindsa honoured Prince and his supporters, several of whom also joined the SAD, with siropas.

SLIET Techfest begins: The two-day ‘Techfest 2013’ began on Friday at the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) here. Students from 60 institutes are taking part in the fest. Paper, poster and model exhibitions, robot fighting, remote control car race among other events are being organised at the festival. Senior advisor and coordinator, United Nations Development Programme, Professor RS Aggarwal, asked the students to keep themselves informed about the latest developments in science and technology.

Varsity extends admission date
: Directorate of Distance Education, Kurukshetra University, has extended the date of admission to all undergraduate and postgraduate courses except BEd, MCA, MBA Part-1 up to March 31, 2013, with a late fee of Rs 5,000, according to Davinder Sachdeva, Public Relations Officer, KU. 

Man dies in mishap: Anitis Kumar, a resident of Chhapra village, was killed on the spot when a canter hit his motorcycle near Baba Markanda Pool, Shahabad, in the district on Thursday. The Shahabad police registered a case in this regard.
