NRI arrested with 570 gm of heroin
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 4 The police has also recovered Indian as well as foreign currency worth Rs 13.86 lakh from the NRI, who has been identified as Anup Singh Kahlon, a resident of Jhedusinghwala falling under Maqsudan police station in Jalandhar. The accused was a heavy vehicle driver. The other accused has been identified as Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Kharar near Mohali. Giving sequence of events that led to the seizure of the contraband, Senior Superintendent of Police Hardial Singh Mann said that during a regular checking exercise the police team led by Fatehgarh Sahib police station SHO Inspector Davinder Attri set up a special naka near the village Madofal T-Point. When the car arrived at the T-point from the Madofal village side the police on suspicion directed the two accused to stop. During checking the police recovered 570 gms heroin from the possession of Anup Singh who was sitting on the front passenger seat. The police has also recovered two fake driving licences from him besides four .32 bore live cartridges from Kulwinder Singh. Mann said during the thorough checking of the vehicle the police also recovered a bag containing airtight plastic bags, four packets of empty capsules, a laptop, three mobile phones, Rs 8,94,800, 9045 Canadian dollars, 4 US dollars and 5 UK pounds, from his briefcase. The police also seized his Canadian citizen sim card, passport, cancelled Indian passport along with other items including ATM Cards and mobile sims. The SSP said during preliminary investigations it was revealed that Anup Singh along with his family members had been residing in Canada since 1996. He said the accused had purchased a flat in Zirakpur to carry out the illegal drug trafficking business. He said the modes operandi of the accused was to fill the contraband in empty capsules and later packed these in specially coated airtight plastic bags to dodge the sniffer dogs and x-ray machines at the International airports. He said a case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 of the IPC, and 25, 54, 59 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the two and added that further investigation was on to ascertain their links with the drug traffickers operating from Punjab.p |

Techno-cultural festival ‘Panache 2013” begins
Banur, March 4 On the first day, cultural and techno events were performed. In the solo singing and duet singing 20 colleges of north India took participation. In the choreography event, 10 teams of different college participated and in the skit event 7 team of the colleges participated. A fashion show would be held at night. On the second day of the festival, paper presentation, modelling and rock war competition would be held. On the last and final day, a cultural programme would be performed by a prominent Punjabi singer, Kamal Heer. In the inaugural address, the chief guest stressed upon the teachers to adopt quality and innovative methodology to teach the students. |

Chandigarh, March 4 After the four students applied for bail, the court issued a notice to the UT police to file a reply on March 7. The UT police had arrested four students, all belonging to well-to-do families of Punjab, in the case of theft of a rear wheel of a Yamaha sports bike parked outside a house in Sector 15. The accused have been identified as Harmanjot Singh, Inderpal Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Manmeet Singh, all residents of Mohali. While seeking their police remand, the police told the court that there had been more instances of tyre thefts in the same sector and they have to verify if these students have committed more such thefts. The police said Harmanjot Singh is pursuing engineering from the UIET, PU, and Abhishek Sharma is pursuing a pharmacy course. Inderpal Singh is a BCom student of DAV College and Manmeet Singh is pursuing a course in designing at Mohali. Manmeet Singh also designs bikes and actively takes part in motorcycle rallies, the police said. On March 1, the police received a complaint from Anita Thakur, a resident of Sector 15, that two persons, apparently in police uniforms, took away the rear tyre of her motorcycle parked in front of her beauty parlour-cum-residence. |

Seven-day police remand for accused
Mohali, March 4 The court has also extended the police remand of other two accused, Onkar Singh and his nephew Sunbir Singh till February 10. Earlier, the trio was produced before the local court today afternoon. The Mohali police demanded seven-day remand of Jaswinder Singh and extension of equal duration for the two other accused, whose earlier six days remand came to an end today. The police is yet to arrest the remaining six accused and recover the weapons used in the crime. Moreover, it also wished by the police that a cross examination of the accused in each other presence should take place. One person arrested for providing shelter, money and vehicles to the accused The Mohali Police today arrested Amandeep Singh from Kurali after registering case against him for providing shelter and other facilities to the accused of Amanpreet murder case. The Mataur Police Station's SHO Atul Soni said that Amandeep Singh and Jatinder Singh had provided shelter, vehicles and money to the accused after the crime. "We have recovered a car (PB65Q 3538), which Amandeep had given to some of the accused. Jatinder Singh had helped the accused by providing his Mercedes (CH55 T 0499),"said the police officer. Amandeep Singh has been absconding and the police is yet to recover his car. A case under Sections 212 and 216 of the IPC has been registered against the duo. |

Man arrested for killing wife
Mohali, March 4 The police claimed that Amarinder Singh had confessed that he had murdered his wife Manjit kaur (22) by strangulating her with the 'dupatta'. The accused had earlier concocted a story that his wife was strangulated when her 'dupatta' got stuck in the wheel of his motorbike while they were on the way to temple. The victim's mother Shanti Devi, a resident of Zirakpur, had \ lodged a complaint against her son-in-law. The police claimed that while confessing to his crime, the accused said that he never liked his wife and was already in a relation with someone else. The couple got married on November 28 last year. |

Two youths arrested with weapons
Panchkula, March 4 It was the fascination for the luxury cars which landed the two 23-year-old boys, Jai Krishan and Surya Pratap Singh, in a police net. Krishan hails from Punjab and was residing in Sector 11, Panchkula, with his paternal uncle. Surya Pratap hails from Uttar Pradesh and was doing a private job in Chandigarh. "They had gone with their respective friends to Goa few months back when the two met each other. They then got in contact and became friends," said SHO Lalit Kumar, Sector 14 police station. He said, "They wanted a luxury car and for that they were preparing robbery plan when they were caught." The police has registered a case at the Sector 14 police station. |

One more booked for running illegal paying guest accommodation
Mohali, March 4 The police has registered a case under Section 188 of the IPC against Rajan Luthra, an owner of HIG house, Phase XI, as he had not registrated his PG accommodations with the authorities. The police has already booked three more such persons, including Janak Raj, Daljit Singh and Harjit Singh. In Janak Raj's house the accused of Amanpreet murder case was residing as a paying guest. He was arrested by the police the next day of the crime. Daljit Singh is an executive engineer in the Irrigation Department at Chandigarh. He is a resident of Phase VI, Mohali. He was booked for putting up 12 girls as paying guests in his house. A similar case was registered against Harjit Singh, a resident of Sector 71, Mohali. Mohali SSP GS Bhullar said a special drive has been launched against the illegal paying guest accommodations. "In most of the criminal cases involvement of PGs is being noticed. So it's the duty of the owners to provide information about their tenants and paying guests to the police so that we can check their credentials," said SSP GS Bhullar. |
4 more held in Ravi murder case
Panchkula, March 4 The four accused identified as Sunil, Vicky, Tota and Sonu were also produced in the court today and were sent to a police remand for five days. Already three accused have been arrested in the case out of which one was a juvenile. The accused had confessed that it was Pradeep who had forced them to come and beat the brothers. Two accused identified as Deva and Vikas alias Bhaand were arrested in the case. They are also on five-day police remand. The accused have admitted that in a fit of rage they had stabbed Ravi at the Kisan Mandi, Sector 5, Panchkula. Ravi was killed while his brother Aneesh, a resident of Ram Darbar, received seriously injuries for Rs 10. As many as seven youths had beaten them up on Thursday night. Ravi and Aneesh were here to put up a vegetables stall when Pradeep and seven others burtually thrashed them over the umbrella which the accused used to give on rent. While Ravi was stabbed to death by the accused, Aneesh was referred to PGI, Chandigarh. The family members of the deceased had blocked the road separating Sector 5 and Sector 6 a day of the murder. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. |

Basketball championship venue shifted
Chandigarh, March 4 The original plan of the UT Sports Department was to organise an All-India Basketball (U-19) Tournament at the new indoor stadium during the year 2009-10. But due to the incomplete work, the tournament was postponed. After failing to get the court on right time, the tournament is being organised for the professional men’s team. “The original plan was to organise the tourney, in the newly build indoor stadium. But after for so many years, we failed to get any positive response from the engineering department. Now, that we have to organise the tournament, so we opted for this complex at Sector 46. The present venue is under make-over and soon will witness the tourney from March 8,” said KS Bharti, District Sports Officer. Adding further, “The tournament will be conducted in outdoor courts under the guidelines of Indian Basketball Federation,” said Bharti. A total of 8 teams including Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, Oil & Natural Gas Commission, New Delhi, Central Reserve Police Force, New Delhi, Punjab Basketball Association, Ludhiana, Punjab Armed Police Force, Jalandhar, Army Sports Control Board, New Delhi, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala and Coaching Centre Chandigarh will vie for this cup. The winners of the tourney will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh while runners-up and third position holders will get Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. All the matches will be played in the league-cum-knockout tournament. Notably, it was reported in same column during the year 2011 about the non-completion of the indoor stadium. According to sources, in engineering department, the department will take another three to four month in lying down the synthetic court at the indoor stadium. “The officials of sports department were asked to shortlist the color and quality of the synthetic court.
