Developers booked for setting up illegal colonies

Fatehgarh Sahib. March 3
The district police has registered FIRs against 17 colonisers for carving out plots and sale of plots in an unauthorised manner by violating the Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) norms.

These cases have been registered under Section 36(1) and 36(3) of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act and Section 420 of the IPC, on the complaint of a Junior Engineer of GMADA, Mohali. Interestingly PUDA had written to district Police on June 23, 2004, to register cases against the colonisers but the police did not take any action. Now after a gap of nine years these cases have been registered.

HS Mann, SSP, said that the district police received a reminder from GMADA on September 04, 2012, to register the case against certain colonisers, who had sold the plots by laying out illegal colonies. He further said that he directed the respective Station House Officers to enquire and register the cases. Mann said these persons were found indulging in violation of PUDA norms, so the cases against 17 persons had been registered, where as the remaining 12 cases were being probed.

Those booked by Fatehgarh Sahib police, include Karamjit Singh, Mithua resident of Sirhind, Jinder Singh, a resident of Badauchi Kalan, Pardeep Singh, Harinder Singh, Gurinder Singh, Gurtaj Singh & Sandeep Singh, residents of Brahman Majra Sirhind, Karan Kumar, Narinder Singh, residents of Mandi Gobindgarh, Parminder Singh, Teja Singh of Rajinder Nagar, Harbans Singh, a resident of Uppal Heri, Baljit Singh, a resident of Kakori, Darshan Singh, a resident of Anait Pura, Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Panjoli Khurd, Kanwaljit Singh, a resident of Sirhind.

While Sirhind Police booked Hardeep Singh, Jaswant Singha, residents of Village Khare, Didar Singh, a resident of Hamayunpur, Sirhind and Randhir Singh, a resident of Khant Khamano.

Class V student thrashed by teacher, hospitalised

Fatehgarh Sahib, March 3
Gaurav, a class V student of a government school at Dufera village, was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, in a serious condition after his school teacher allegedly beat him up. The parents have demanded strict action against the teacher.

While talking to the media persons Jeet Singh, the father of the victim said that his son was in 5th class in government school. He said, school teacher Jaswant Singh asked his son to bring keys from the room but his son could not locate the keys.

When he informed the teacher about the same, the teachrer got angry and started beating him. He said when his son returned home, he caught fever and his condition started worsening.

They took him to the Civil Hospital, Bassi Pathana, but the doctors refered him to the Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, as his condition was unstable. He urged the higher authorities to take stern action, so that no innocent student was beaten in this way in future.

When contacted Navtejinder Singh, District Education Officer, he said that matter had been brought to his notice and he would conduct a thorough enquiry and take action against the guilty. However, the concerned teacher, Jaswant Singh could not be contacted even after repeated attempts

MC passes Rs 33.4-cr budget

The Dera Bassi municipal council has approved 33.40 crore budget for 2013-14. This budget has been approved by the meeting of councillors, presided over by council president Baljinder Kaur, in the presence of local MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary NK Sharma.

The MC officials told that total budget for the current year would be Rs 37 crore after adding 3.5 crore income of last year. The executive officer of municipal council, Rajesh Sharma told that nearly Rs 31 crore out of the total budget, would be provided for development works of city. Whereas. rest of the amount would be spend for the establishments and contingencies during this year. The current year's budgetent year is nearly Rs 11 crore more than last year's.--OC

240 students get placements

A mega job fest was organised at Shaheed Udham Singh Polytechnic College, Tangori, in which more than 1000 students from different streams and different polytechnic institutes of the northern region participated. Road rage: Prime accused arrested

A day after the death 
of a 73-year-old man following a road rage at the grain market in Sector 26, the UT police has arrested the prime accused, Rajnish, a financier, in a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the IPC.

"The name of a woman, who is Rajnish's sister, is also mentioned in the FIR as a co-accused, but she is yet to be arrested as her involvement is being probed," the police said.

The police arrested 35-year-old Rajnish, a resident of Sector 32.

A scuffle had turned gory yesterday after 73-year-old Krishan Lal, a relative of a councillor, had died as he was thrashed and pushed.

The victim was rushed to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead.

The incident occurred at 5 pm last evening when Krishan Lal was on his way to his Mani Majra residence and his grandson Bhupesh was with him. The moment Bhupesh set out in his car, a Maruti car hit their car.

Rajnish, who was driving the Maruti car, alighted from the vehicle and a scuffle ensued. He, along with his sister, beat up the 73-year-old man and pushed him.

Exchange of kicks and blows followed after which the brother-sister duo fled the spot.

Krishan Lal had been running a grocery store in the name of Ashok Kumar and Brothers at the grain market in Sector 26 for the past 25 years.

The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy.

The victim was a heart patient and the accused, Rajnish, told the police that he did not realise that the elderly would die in the scuffle as he was only defending himself.

DSP Vijay Kumar said they were probing the role of the woman, who was the co-accused, as the complainant had alleged that she, too, beat up his grandfather during the scuffle. "Her name is in the FIR, but she is yet to be arrested," he said.

Man held for rape bid

Chandigarh, March 3
The police has arrested a 40-year-old labourer in an attempt-to-rape case. The accused, identified as Ram Bahadur, alias Veer Bahadur, a resident of Kajherihad village, had tried to violate a three-year-old minor girl last evening.

The girl's family alleged that the accused, who was under the influence of liquor, took the girl to a deserted area.

On hearing her cries, passersby rushed to the spot and thrashed the accused before handing him over to the police.

The girl's father is an auto driver.

A case of sexual assault under Sections 8, 18 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 has been registered at the Sector 36 police station. The accused was produced in a local court which sent him to judicial custody.

1 kg poppy husk seized 

Zirakpur, March 3
The police arrested one person named Raj Singh and seized one kg poppy husk from his custody . As per the information the accused Raj Singh, son of Jeet Singh is a resident of village Ghanoud, district Sangrur.

The accused was nabbed from Patiala chowk, when he came out from a bus. On conducting search poppy husk was recovered from him. A case was registered by the police in this regard and accused had been sent to judicial custody for 14 days in Patiala jail. — OC

Manan Vohra, a local budding cricketer, is all set to feature in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) while representing Kings XI Punjab team.

The team has announced the addition of three new players, including Manan Vohra in their squad. Earlier, in year 2011, this right-handed batsman made the city proud after making it to the junior Indian team. But hard-luck hit him during the year 2012, when got his finger fractured during a practice session and was ruled out of the team.

"After my injury, IPL will be my first major tournament. The T-20 Ranji matches are just around the corner and hopefully I will get a chance to play for my state. The injury has taken away my precious time but in upcoming tournaments I will try to regain my form”, said Manan. Adding further he said, “I don't have big hopes but all I need is to give my best. The presence of my batch-mates in the Kings XI will surely boost my confidence. And playing in front of home crowd will remain a challenge for me”.

Aniket Choudhary, left-arm medium pacer from Rajasthan and Sandeep Sharma, right-arm medium pacer from Punjab, are the other additions in the squad.

Bodybuilders Sahil and Kirat bagged the title of best posers while Raj Kumar won the best muscular award during the 1st Mr Mohali Bodybuilding Championship, held at MAlli”s Shape Gym and Fitness Centre, here.

The tournament was conducted under the guideline of IFBB/AFBB/PABBA norms. The top five positions holder were awarded with Rs 3500 , Rs 2500 , Rs 1500 ,Rs 500 and Rs 500. The over all title-winner was awarded Rs10,000 while the best poser and best muscular bagged the cash prize of Rs 5000 each.

Delhi team bags golf trophy

The annual Legal Fraternity Golf Tournament was organised at the Chandigarh Golf Tournament, here. The tournament witnessed a good turn out of Judges and lawyers participating from all over northern India while the Delhi team bagged the overall trophy.

Justice Nawab Singh was adjudged as the winner on basis of over all gross, in the judges' category while KK Singla played a sterling round of 77 to win the tournament on over all gross. SS Toor won for the straightest drive and RS Rai bagged the winner for nearest to the pin award.

City lad becomes FIDE licensed chess instructor

The worldwide chess governing body FIDE, has approved city based Nitin as its licensed FIDE Arbiter and Chess Development Instructor from India. This entitlement allows Nitin to become FIDE arbiter and chess in schools developmental instructor. 

Nitin, an internationally rated chess player, who is also a coach of DAV College and MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, went through a rigorous training, a few months back in New Delhi followed by an examination conducted by FIDE. Nitin, who has been playing chess since 1986, has won many titles, acted as an arbiter in many chess events in and around Chandigarh. He also acted as an arbiter for BSNL, Income Tax Department, Defence Accounts Department and a recently held 20th All India forest Chess meet at Panchkula.

Cricket trials to be held on March 20

In order to fill the seats of cricket academy, the Chandigarh Cricket Association will organise trails on March 20 The players born on or after September 1,1999 will be eligible to take part in the trails.

The selection trails will be held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 at 3 pm. The interested players are advised to bring their age proof certificate during the trails. The association will also start the new session of non-residential academy for boys U-12 and U-14 categories from April 13, here.

YCA beat MCA by 4 wickets

In the ongoing Mohali cup, the Yadavindra Cricket Academy (YCA) defeated Mohali Cricket Association (MCA) by 4 wickets, here.

While batting first, the MCA team scored a total of 162-runs in 40 overs. Their batsman Shubmam Gill scored 50 off 63 while for bowling side Vishwanath claimed 4 for 23. Chasing target, the wining side scored 163-runs at the cost of six wickets.Vishwanath remained the top scorer for the team with his 42-run contribution and he was equally supported by Anil, who scored 38 off 45 . For bowling side, Taranpreet claimed 3 for 24.

City police register 5-wicket win

The Chandigarh Police cricket team defeated the Government Medical College, Chandigarh, by 5-wickets, in a friendly cricket match at Government Model Senior Secondary Schools sector 35, here.

After being put to bat, the loosing side posted a total of 93 runs in 17 overs. From the bowling side, Yashpal claimed 3 for 12 runs while Balwinder Singh (senior) and Vikas Rathi took two wickets apiece. In reply, the wining side attained the target with Ajay Sharda and Ramandeep Singh contributing 23 and 20 runs respectively.

City judokas shine in national meet

The local judokas won four medals during the National Youth and Junior Judo Championships held at Gurgaon.

Shivam Sharma won gold medal in Boys U-17 of 50-kg category, while Renu Kundu bagged silver medal in Girls U-20 of 57-kg category. Tinku Yadav won bronze medal in Boys U-20 of 60 kg category and Seema bagged another bronze in Girls U-20 of 63 kg category. Earlier, judoka Renu Kundu was selected for the National Coaching Camp before for the forth-coming International Judo events.
