Take 2
While the awards may be dicey, a sequel is definite. There are a couple of things that go without saying when a film is successful — continuity of either the title or the story is just one of them. So, accordingly, a year-and-a-half later, the Gangster returns and this time with a suitable addition in the form of Soha Ali Khan, which makes it a quadrangle of star performers.
“Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is a little more opulent than the previous one. It has scenes like ball-room dance and polo matches,” shares Rahul Mittra, the co-producer, with Mahie Gill, Jimmy Shergill and Jazzy B in tow, during an interaction in Chandigarh on Friday. The comparisons with the original are inevitable and among the many important things, budgets often remain incomparable. “It is not necessary that the budgets in the sequels shoot up. It all depends on the story. But since this sequel is more opulent, it called for an increased budget.” The 2011 hit had a villain, a hero, romance and action; a tailor-made hit formula; this time Irrfan Khan replaces Randeep Hooda and Soha Ali Khan joins the gang. “Soha Ali Khan’s role is like a catalyst. She fits the bill completely. In the story, we’re talking of royalty and that is something that she brings naturally.” Coming up are Bullet Raja and Revolver Rani, the films whose titles strike first and foremost. “You have to ask that question to Tigmanshu Dhulia. He comes up with the titles,” he shrugs. The pair leads Enter the Saheb, who is now in ruins. Jimmy Shergill reprises his character but at an altogether different level. “The sequels make more business sense, but you also need to bring in continuity. This sequel takes forward the story while retaining the same set-up,” Jimmy Shergill makes the movie sound promising enough and tends to the initial queries in chaste Punjabi, while Mahie Gill’s on the way! While the previous one may not have been a musical classic, it gave us the highly energetic and accepted number Jugni; steps in Jazzy B with the song that is an integral part of the film. He may not have faced performance pressure but there were time restraints. He laughs, “These people in Mumbai work so differently. They work very fast and want everything instantly. While we believe in taking our own time and coming up with quality music.” Things roll quickly especially “when there’s the same star cast.” Last but not the least, Mahie Gill claims that her character this time, is “much more ambitious and much more aggressive.” Nevertheless, she refuses to compare the Gangsters. “I can’t pick up any one of them. I won’t take names. There’s absolutely no comparison because they are both amazing actors.” The heavy dose of bold scenes has been toned down, as she says, “There was no need this time. The script did not demand it and the times have come when the script is the real hero.” Something, perhaps, she abides by in real life while selecting her projects. “I have Zanjeer and Bullet Raja coming up this year.” That’s for later. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Cool your pet
The summer is in the air and we are all geared up to keep ourselves cool. But more than us, it is the pets, especially dogs, need to be taken care of in the scorching weather and later the killing humidity.
“As the weather gets humid, animals often suffer from hyperthermia and feel uncomfortable. So one should make sure during the warm weather that places where pets are kept should be hygienic,” says Dr Kirti Dua from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animals Sciences University. During this weather, animals are also more prone to ticks and parasites, which cause skin problems and itching. To avoid this, regular combing and washing of the coat is important. Says Dr Jaspreet Singh from Vets for Pets, “Infectious diseases like Parvo Distemper and tick-related problems increase in summer,” he says. “Water should be given frequently to the animals to avoid dehydration,” says Dr Dua. Even exercise of the dogs should be left for the coolest part of the day. Glassy eyes and frantic panting can indicate that a dog needs help. Older, obese and snort-nosed dogs need constant access to shade and clean water. “Short nose dogs or ‘barchycephalic’ breeds such as Pugs and English Bulldogs suffer from heat strokes all the more,” adds Dr Dua. Although the dogs might like getting out in the sun, prolonged exposure can be harmful, so a shady spot in the form of a shelter is a good idea. “An insulated and ventilated dog house or an open-air tent or canopy with a fan will help. Or one can also install a doggie door to allow indoor access to dogs when they need shade,” says Dr Jaspreet.

More peals of laughter
The growing popularity of Punjabi cinema has come as a boon for the acting talent from the region. Here’s a platter full of a rather robust Punjabi flavour that’s well garnished with some of the most fashionable names, including Miss Pooja, Tarun Khanna, Sahil Vedoliyaa, Raj Singh Jhinger and BN Sharma. If you are still contemplating as to what’s cooking, we spill the beans—it’s the star cast of Pooja Kiven Aa?, which assembled at the Park Plaza, Sector 17, on a sunny Friday afternoon.
“We are here for the music launch of the film,” says Miss Pooja, who is a well-known name in the Punjabi music industry and has worked in two Punjabi films before venturing into this new project. She adds, “In this film, I will be essaying the role of a young girl who just returns from the UK to sell her father’s property. The film is a laughter ride that traces a connect with the three men who pursue me, while my advocate being played by BN Sharma tries to guide me through various situations, which land me in thick soup.” The music of the film has been given by Sachin Ahuja, who smiles while he details on the music of the film, “I make tunes for the masses, so I think that the audience will connect with the music of this film. It has fast numbers that are well in tune with the rhythm of the cinematic plot, which the film offers. There is a romantic track in the film that has been sung by Kunal Ganjawala, I’m certain that the audience will love it.” While chasing the cut of the film, BN Sharma applauds the force with which the Punjabi film industry has paved its way back into momentum; he cherishes its full swing while hoping that it gallops to success, “It’s rooted in every Punjabi’s disposition; to strike back with optimum force and when it comes to the industry, we have experienced it first-hand. This film has a very new concept.” amarjot@tribunemail.com
Comic timing
You have seen this handsome lad smiling brightly at you through the television sets. “I have worked in CID, Chandragupta Maurya, Vikram Betal and Nidar, however, acting in films is an entirely different proposition. My character in this film is of a village pumpkin who would languor all day long, but as soon as his father chides him, he goes to Mumbai to do something big. The way the story unfolds then will certainly throw the audience in splits,” says actor Tarun
Khanna.

Love-hate drama
I, Me Aur Main In the film, John Abraham plays the role of a charismatic, good-looking music producer, Ishaan, who hails from Mumbai. He is excessively pampered by his mother (Zarina Wahab) and is protected by his elder sister, Shivani (Mini Mathur). He is in a live-in relationship with Anushka (Chitrangda Singh) and takes her for granted. The plot of the film takes an interesting turn when he falls in love with his new neighbour, Gauri (Prachi Desai). Real through the reel I think that the movie depicts real life relationships, and having said that I mean that it is not a nauseatingly rosy happy love story. It focuses on the turmoil that one has to go through to make a relationship work. Also, I love the way John has essayed the role of Ishaan. I think most men and women will relate to his character. Aditi sharma, a student High on fashion I love the way Chitrangda, John and Prachi look in the movie. They emulate the style guide that is typical of the youth today. Also, the story line compliments the way they look. It's a fairly good movie and I love the role of John Abraham. Jyotika Tulli Surprisingly sweet I think Prachi Desai is a breath of fresh air and she has pulled off a stunner rather effectively. Mini Mathur's and Zarina Wahab as the mother-sister duo is highly commendable. However, the film has been dragged a bit. Urvashi Sharma, Student —As told to to Amarjot Kaur |

Testing times
Simmi Waraich My daughter was always a good student in school. However, in the 11th and 12th standards, she has had problems following a time table. My husband and I work and so we are not home during the day. We have not been very strict with our children and have let them set their own routines. However, now she is getting anxious as she finds she is behind. M Khanna, Chandigarh. Exams are around the corner. While some children deal with it comfortably, others go through a lot of stress. There are some factors that can make a difference in optimising one's performance in exams and keep anxiety at bay. Maybe you do need to sit with her and set a time table and then review it after a few days together to see what is interfering with the time table. Then set up a new one keeping the interferences in mind, like computer and television. Just study what is important now and leave out the rest. Avoid extra studying close to the exams. You could advise her to do the following— n During the day, just sit in a chair and take five deep breaths. Close your eyes, feel the breath going in through your nostrils, through your windpipe into the lungs, feel the fresh air release the oxygen in your body and give you energy as it spreads to all parts of your body. As you breathe out, feel your whole body from your toes to your forehead relaxing. Let your arms hang by your side and feel the tension in your muscles flow out of your fingers. Visualise sunshine warming and relaxing your body. Do this daily. n Develop good sleeping habits, and exercise regularly. So get up from your desk and go out for a 10 min run or 20 minute brisk walk. n During the exam, be aware of time allotted for the test, read directions carefully, and identify which questions you will answer and leave questions blank that one is not sure of and attempt to answer them later. n Take deep breaths and attempt to regain composure when anxiety levels are high or when negative thoughts are present. Focus on the wall or on a picture and remind yourself "just focus on now." I am a 17-year-old student. I feel compelled to pull out my eyebrow hair and my hair. My eyebrows have become scanty and even though I try, I am not able to stop it. What can I do? Sameena, Patiala Trichotillomania is the recurrent pulling out of one's hair for pleasure, gratification, or relief of tension that results in noticeable hair loss. There is a sense of relief after the hair pulling. Basically in treatment medicines are used as well as behaviour therapy--where one is taught to identify situations in which hair pulling is more likely to happen like under stress. Learning to use a new response when the urge to pull out hair is taught, like clenching one's fist when there is the urge. Therapy needs to be done under supervision. Various factors need to taken into account like family dynamics, daily routine etc. (Waraich is a consultant psychiatrist) |

The Attacks of 26/11
The Attacks of 26/11 is a crime-thriller, which is based on the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Sanjeev Jaiswal plays the role of the terrorist, Ajmal Kasab. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed the film, uncut, with an 'Adults Only' certificate. Also, the film has been selected for Berlin International Film Festival, 2013 in the panorama and the competition section.
Must watch I totally loved the movie. Nana Patekar has done an amazing job while essaying the role of a joint commissioner of police to a city that did not even have time to recover from an attack before facing another attack of a similar kind or of a higher magnitude. Also, Sanjeev Jaiswal's expressions are commendable. It's a must watch. Vishavjeet Singh, a businessman Well done The cityscape and the vivid visuals were a delight. The movie set the theme of a psychological thriller. Not only was it well narrated, but it was well presented too. The director has paid attention every detail of the film. Anil Sharma, student

A super-hit shake!
Attention! After The Gangnam Style, we bring to you The Harlem Shake—an Internet meme in the form of a video of people performing a skit to the song Harlem Shake. The video was uploaded by five teenagers from Queensland, Australia known on YouTube as The Sunny Coast Skate. The Harlem Shake meme has spread in many countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and much of Europe, Russia and Eastern Europe, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates and Jamaica. Gangnam connection The sound finds a resonating connection with the Gangnam style. However, I love the beats and the fact that it is a happy song. Saurav Gupta, a student Electrifying beat I love it. I think that such erratic dance numbers are catching up with the youth. This song has a goofy kind of feel to it. Sidharth Sharma, Businessman Sounds awesome I love the song. The beats and the psychedelic touch have made it fall in Reva Tyagi, a student —As told to Amarjot Kaur |

Confession of a dancing queen
Dancing makes Gauhar Khan very, very happy and she is a natural dancer. She has won accolades and done many dance numbers such as Jhalla Wallah, Parda and Chokra Jawan. She is also performing at the Indian version of Broadway.
Dancing diva I have been dancing since I was three years old. I used to dance like Neelam. Then I danced on a show for the first time with Rekhaji, then Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. I think they are all extremely graceful and have so much adah (style). They also showed me the technical aspect of dancing. Broadway prospect I adored Nicole Kidman's work in Moulin Rouge. I have always wanted to sing and dance on stage and getting a role in a Broadway show was a dream come true. I am playing a gypsy girl, so it fits right in with my sensibilities and personalities. I love watching musicals too. They are amazing and I feel so alive on stage. Risky moves I have got injured while dancing. Like on the sets of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, the disco ball fell and crashed near my feet so it started bleeding. Ajay Devgn asked someone to put glue on the wound.

SRK takes a go at Sallu again!
Bollywood is full of love stories and friendships, but one can certainly not forget the enmities. There are a lot of famous stars in Bollywood who just cannot stand each other and actually make it clear to the public as well!
One such really popular hate relationship is that of Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Their hatred extends back over a decade. There were rumours that both of them had patched up, but it certainly does not look like the chapter is closed yet. According to sources, Salman Khan, who owns the Mumbai Heroes, sent an invite to SRK for the Celebrity Cricket League match. But SRK decided to give this invitation a pass and decided to grace the University Cricket Championship with his presence instead. While this might seem to some to be a mere time- appointment problem, there are a lot of people who think that the issue runs deeper than that. Did SRK cold shoulder Salman on purpose? Did he actually mean to insult the star? When quizzed about this, Shah Rukh said "I think there are so many stars in CCL. I don't think they need a smaller star like me." Ouch! That does not seem like a statement from a man who turned the invitation down for genuine reasons. What is causing this new wave of hatred between the two actors?

When Big B cleaned Bebo’s feet
Would you believe it if we told you that Amitabh Bachchan cleaned Kareena Kapoor's feet? The duo is currently shooting for Satyagraha in Bhopal and Big B recalled how he washed Bebo's little feet many years ago on the sets of Pukar in which he co-starred with Randhir Kapoor. Bebo did not like an 'evil' man beating up her father so she ran onto the sets to protect him. Her tiny feet got dirty. Big B settled her down and washed her pretty feet with his hands. How sweet!

Anandi calls it quits
Pratyusha Banerjee has quit her big debut show Balika Vadhu on Colors. This sudden decision has shaken the industry. She explains her reasons for the shift.
After playing the iconic role of Anandi for almost three years why are you quitting? The work hours were getting too much and were taking a toll on my health. I would have handled that, but my mom had a surgery recently and I want to be with her. So managing both was getting a bit too much. We worked out a mutual solution. I am grateful for the opportunity Balika Vadhu gave me. The cast and crew knew about it or were surprised? They were shocked as no one knew. I didn’t want to talk about it till things were finalised. I spoke to two or three cast and some crew members, who were there for me. Are films next on agenda? Let’s see, I haven’t decided. For now I am going to take a break and go on a holiday. Who will you miss the most? Everyone; it is my family and I will miss everyone. I will keep in touch and meet everyone somewhere or the other. So it will be fine Are you feeling bad about quitting? Well, every show has to end somewhere and I think this was my end with Balika.
