Retired MC employee gagged to death

A 65-year-old retired municipal corporation employee was gagged to death by robbers at his house in New Kundan Puri here today. The victim has been identified as Ramesh Kumar. The assailants decamped with 15 tola of gold ornaments and Rs 10,000 from the house.
Shooting of Punjabi movie gets under way

The inauguration of shooting of a Punjabi movie, "Rose - Ek Ajeeb Kahani", was organised at Gujrawala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, here.
During the inauguration, producer of the movie Kamaldeep Singh from the city said that the movie was about a girl, named Rose.
Zones of 400 colonies changed

During a meeting of the zoning committee members held yesterday, zones of around 400 colonies were changed by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. In a majority of such cases, the colonies have been shifted to a lower zone, which means the residents of a lower zone will have to pay less property tax than those in a higher zone, the rates of which would be fixed soon.
Goods worth lakhs destroyed in Galib Kalan village fire

Goods worth lakhs were destroyed in a fire that broke out at a house at Galib Kalan village near Jagraon today. Owner of the house Kuldip Singh claimed that goods worth more than Rs 4.5 lakh were destroyed in the fire.

Jhansi Road commercial complex to go under the hammer on March 6

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) will once again put under the hammer its 2.22-acre commercial complex on Maharani Jhansi Road here on March 6. With a built-up area of 7,634 square yards, the complex has been constructed at a cost of Rs 16
crore. The complex, situated close to the upmarket commercial hub of Ghumar
Mandi, will be sold as a single unit at a reserve price of Rs 197 crore.

5 dyeing units, 1 showroom face closure

The Punjab Pollution Control Board has issued closure notices to five dyeing units and one automobile showroom in the city.
Birth certificate norm relaxed

Providing much relief to residents, the state government has now allowed the residents above 15 years of age to get their names included in their birth certificates as well as the official record. According to the previous rules, only those could get their names included in their birth certificates who were below 15 years of age. The residents can get their names included in their birth certificates by December 31, 2014.
MC House meeting to be held next week

The much-awaited general house meeting of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is expected to be held next week. Earlier, the Mayor had announced that the meeting would be held in the last week of February (after the Moga byelection), but in view of some official meetings regarding property tax, the meeting was postponed for March.
‘Petrol price hike blow to common man’

A day after the Budget proposals were presented in Parliament, the petrol price saw an upward trend today. The petrol price was hiked by Rs 1.40 per litre, the second big increase in two weeks. The hike is excluding local sales tax or VAT and the actual increase in the price for consumers will be higher after including these taxes. The previous petrol price hike was Rs 1.50 per litre, excluding VAT, effected on February 16.

LUDHIANA: One woman patient died due to swine flu, here at CMCH Ludhiana. Wile another female patient from J&K tested positive for swine flu. She is under treatment at CMCH. With this district Ludhiana received 22 swine flu positive patients, out of which 7 died.
Two arrested on charge of illegal sand mining

The police has arrested two persons for allegedly mining and smuggling of sand illegally. Both the accused were arrested from two separate locations during a search operation launched by Mullanpur Dakha Police to prevent illegal mining of sand from the Sutlej.

Woman dies as car hits rickshaw
Ludhiana, March 1
A 65-year-old woman was killed after the rickshaw she was travelling in was hit by an overspeeding car near the railway station here last evening. The victim has been identified as Radha Rani of Salem Tabri. According to Narinder Kumar, victim's son, his mother was heading towards Hathi Chowk along with his nieces on a rickshaw.
Man arrested with drugs
Ludhiana, March1
The city police nabbed one person and seized huge quantity of pharmaceutical drugs from his possession. The accused has been identified as Sara Lal, a resident of Jammu. On spotting the police at Mata Rani Chowk, when the accused tried to escape, police found his activities suspicious and got hold of him. On checking the bag police found huge quantity of psychotropic drugs, including injections, cough syrups and tablets. A case under Section 22-61-85 the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused.
