Fake travel agents booked
Dera Bassi, March 1 The case was registered following a complaint of Akashdaani, resident of Anand Nagar, Patiala. He alleged both the agents had taken Rs 2.5 lakh for sending him to Australia, but they switched off their phones on February 23, three days before the planned departure. The police said the accused had collected Rs 22 lakh from nine persons by making false promises of sending them abroad. Efforts were on to nab them, the police said. Two held for murder
Ambala: The Ambala police solved the murder case of Surjit Kaur, alias Guddi (40), a resident of Ambala City, with the arrest of one Luxmi and her son Gaurav, residents of Pundri, yesterday. Surjit Kaur was murdered at her residence in Kaziwara on October 13 last year. Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Kumar said the mother-son duo, with the help of two other persons, had strangulated Surjit Kaur with the intention to steal her gold jewellery and cash. The victim used to visit a religious place at Pundri, also frequented by Luxmi, the police said. |

Zirakpur, March 1 The victim, identified as Jattu, was playing in front of a brick kiln when the vehicle hit him. The boy was shifted to hospital where he breathed his last. The driver fled from the scene. The police has booked him under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC. — OC |
Husband gets four years for abetment to suicide
Chandigarh, March 1 The incident dates back to August 1, 2011, when 33-year-old Harpreet Kaur committed suicide at her Sector 38 (West) residence. She was subjected to mental and physical torture by her husband Gurmeet, who was heavily drunk, the prosecution stated. Their 14-year-old daughter was the only eyewitness who saw her mother locking up herself in a room before committing suicide. During the court hearing, she had also blamed her father for the incident, while her 12-year-old brother had given a contrasting statement. Later, allegedly buckling under the family pressure, the girl too had submitted another application, supporting her father. The court, however, found Gurmeet Singh responsible for Harpreet’s death. |

Man acquitted of rape charge
Chandigarh, March 1 Examining all the evidence submitted before it today, the Court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal acquitted Gulshan of all charges after both the victim and her father turned hostile. Gulshan was accused of kidnapping and raping his 17-year-old niece. The police had rescued the girl after one month and arrested the accused. The case was registered in September last year. |

Man gets 10 years jail for raping minor
Mohali, March 1 The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RS Rai convicted Kulvir Pal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, who had raped a 16-year-old girl on September 27 last year at Gajipur Jatta village. After raping the girl, the accused had also threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the incident. A case under various sections was registered against him. The court announced 10 years of sentence for rape, two years of jail for house trespassing and one-year term for criminal intimidation. All these terms will run concurrently, the judge ruled. |

Delhi woman held for duping local businessman
Chandigarh, March 1 The police said the complainant, Akash Nangia of Sector 20, had paid Rs 40 lakh to Sapna last month. While Rs 9 lakh were paid in cash, Rs 31 lakh were transferred to Sapna’s account. The accused had also signed an MoU that mentioned her office address in Okhala. The police said the address was found to be fake. Sapna was arrested from her rented accommodation in Janakpuri in Delhi. The accused will be produced in a local court tomorrow. |

Second accused held in carbine robbery case
Chandigarh, March 1 The case of robbery was registered on February 20, three days after the UT police constable complained that his carbine got lost. The police had then recovered the carbine. The police today arrested Gurwinder alias Pappu, a resident of Sector 49, while the prime accused Naresh, a resident of Sector 56, was arrested on February 20. The third accused in the case, a resident of Delhi, is still absconding. Gurwinder was absconding all these days and came to his residence today when the police in civvies deployed near his residence arrested him immediately. The police had added Section 392 of the IPC (robbery) in the FIR registered after it came to light that the carbine was robbed and booked the three accused. Initially, the police had registered a case of criminal breach of trust against the constable only. Shalinder Singh, a UT police constable, had reported to the police on February 17 that his carbine had been stolen. After an inquiry was marked against him, the constable admitted that he had lost the carbine when he was heavily drunk and got into a scuffle with three persons. The constable was posted in VVIP security, along with SI Purshottam, when the incident came to light. The constable was part of the security provided to VVIPs, including the Governor of Manipur and the former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir who had come at a programme at the Tagore Theatre on that day. The constable admitted that he had gone to a liquor vend in Sector 30 where he consumed heavy liquor and then got into an argument with three persons who were with him, including Naresh. Naresh along with accused Gurwinder and one other then beat up the constable and robbed him of his carbine and fled. The accused Naresh is a class-IV employee with Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. |

Attack on Colony No. 5 residents, one dead
Chandigarh, March 1 Pardeep Singh, 18, was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, on Monday after he was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons. He was discharged from the hospital on the same day. The injured youth was brought to the Government Multi Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, today morning where he was declared brought dead, said his relatives. Other three persons, Sanjay, Rajan and the deceased’s wife, Rashmi, all Colony No. 5 residents, were also injured in the attack. “Chota Totta, Kala Deepak, Dharmender and Deepak, all natives of Colony number 5, attacked us with slugger, swords, etc. They also snatched the silver chain of the woman,” said Sanjay showing his wounds at the hospital. “The miscreants had an old dispute with me but all four of them attacked my friends also. Pardeep sustained serious injuries on his head and other parts of body and thus died,” added Rajan. A senior police official said they had registered an FIR on that day only. “Today we have received a complaint that one of them has died, so we are investigating the matter and will add relevant sections to the case,” he added. |
