Jazzy jives
There would be countable Punjabi or Pakistani singers who haven't adapted the song Jugni; the last we remember was Pakistani singer Arif Lohar who gave an all-together different spin to Jugni in the movie Cocktail. Now, it is our 'all jazzed up' singer (from head to toe) Jazzy B who sums up the story of the upcoming movie Sahib, Biwi and Gangster Returns in his track Jugni. All geared up to perform at an event Lamhe 2013 at SSIET Dera Bassi, presented by Sri Sukhmani Group Of Institutions, this singer has always believed in two things in life — the Almighty and sincere hardwork. "Rest, everything and anything has to happen." The singer, who is not in a hurry to get into Bollywood or create some record, is happy with the work he is doing. As long as the audiences love the jazz in Jazzy B, all is well!
Jugni returns "I have sung Jugni for Sahib Biwi and Gangster Returns, which I think will be liked by all," says Jazzy, who hasn't changed his personal style in ages. He is one singer who works on his pace. "Bollywood singing is a different ball game, and every singer wants to try something new; I would rather work on my own pace. Every song is a creation that takes time and energy. I like to give every track my best; Bollywood functions differently. They want the result immediately, but with no half-hearted measures," adds the singer, who is working on many solo tracks. Critically famous Off late, audiences have expressed their resentment against those who sing objectionable songs. "Not everyone will like your work even if you are famous. I have always stuck to my work earnestly; I don't have the energy to waste on who is talking what about me. I would rather invest this energy in my work. Jey kisi mehfil vich tuhaadi gal hoye na fer ki mazaa," he laughs. Live wire Those who have seen Jazzy B performing live on stage feel the singer turns into a livewire, touched by an unknown source of energy. "I can't say what gets into me on stage; I just love being there. Performing live is something that I have always liked; this is from where I started. It gives me a high to see the audience dance and sing with me," he shares. Two minutes "Minutes before I reach the stage, as a ritual I thank god for what he has given me - the strength and the voice to perform. I pray that everything goes well and I can entertain people who have come to hear me." Jazzy B is hopeful about his acting debut — Best Of Luck. "I have given my best shot; I am not acting for the heck of it, this is something I thought I would be doing. So I am." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Steps to the soul
Mamta Shankar's famous father Uday Shankar asked her one thing — 'not to copy him'. He showed her a path that she followed with aplomb. This is what she has further passed on to her students. Mastering the Uday Shankar dance form — modern yet Indian to the core — today this Guru A dancer and actor, Mamta has carved her niche in both the realms and feels that these facets complement each other. "Yet, I belong nowhere. Dancers label me as an actor and vice-versa," laughs Mamta, who brings to Chandigarh Amritsya Putra, a ballet that's very close to her heart. A story that's eternal and contemporary at the same time, Amritsya Putra narrates how we are all created from the very same spark. On how it develops from love to friendship, romance, desire, lust, jealousy, violence, nothingness to realisation that we are all same...the same spark. Her dance that has been appreciated on platforms around the world, from prestigious auditoriums to factories, has more to do with the spirit than body. "My father believed in giving something that touches people's soul. We try to minimise the use of languages with an emphasis on expression, which reaches the masses; no tough mudras here that are difficult to interpret," says Mamta, whose works are popular with both accomplished dancers as well as others. She is not for diluting the dance form; her dances look simple, but reaching that result is a challenging task. Acting and dancing apart, Mamta calls herself a very 'god-loving' person. She was not like that to begin with. "Ever since I realised the grace of God, I came to know how everything has been sorted by him for me. Being born into an illustrious family, married to the man who always inspired me to move ahead, mother to two lovely sons and a daughter-in-law, who is an accomplished dancer, one cannot ask for more," she says. "Now I have 1,500 daughters who learn dance at my academy," she adds. Mamta carries forward the legacy and continues to give her creative best while also training gen-next on how to preserve the Uday Shankar style!

Jewel in the crown
He takes his craft rather seriously; dressed immaculately in bright kurta salwar with a matching turban in place, Satinder Sartaaj is all eager to share notes on his album Afsane Sartaaj De in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
It's his mother who releases the album, as Sartaj passionately shares the story behind each of the ten songs, which are a blend of Sufi and folk. The album has songs printed in the singer's own handwriting and carries visuals that went into their making. If Soohe Khat invokes old world charm and culture there are others addressing varied themes, but each related to common life. So there is Kudio Roya Na Karo, a song that always managed to tug emotional chords of women around the world in shows that made Sartaj officially release it. Jang Jaan Waley is a tribute to soldiers who have laid down their lives while Drakhta'n Nu is a call to save the environment; Putt Saadey is a song about young dreams. Closest to this singer's heart though is Dard Gareeban Da and Maula Ji. Son of a farmer, Sartaj aims to touch the common man and highlight his struggle. Maula Ji takes forward from his earlier hit Sai, "It is my ardaas; felt and sung right from the heart." All is not well with the world and Sartaj gives the world a wake up call in Khilara. Sartaj has also danced in a video that showcases the rural flavour of Punjab and before you ask him, he clarifies, "I do have offers for Punjabi movies but I am not an actor yet. Till I learn acting, I am happy inhabiting here." A PhD in music with Sufi studies being the focus, Sartaj studies the Sufi tradition; right from lyrics, saaz to dressing for his thesis. "No education makes you an artiste though," he proclaims adding that, "art comes as a gift from the God." But at the same time he lauds value of education. "If I am able to present myself well, the credit lies with the education and the role of my teachers." The proceeds from his latest album, which is a joint production between Eros International and Firdaus, Sartaj's own production house, go to 'Youwecan', cancer charity that Sartaj is a board member of. If Yuvraj Singh is one person fond of his songs, Dharmendra is another. "Mine is an attempt to reach out to each one in the society." Compliments fill the jam-packed hall — if Sartaj is all humility, it is his Ammi who beams with pride! mona@tribunemail.com

Child’s play
Even as you enter the room, stars and life-size Ben 10 cartoon character welcome you — this is the room of ten-year-old Simran. She is not the only one; people in Ludhiana are especially getting the rooms of their kids designed and furnished.
"Childhood is a special time and people are making it all the more interesting for their kids," says Sarabjit, a parent. "We must fill their life with colours and give them a memorable childhood," he adds. "People use interesting colour schemes right from blues to pink. Generally, light blues are preferred for boys and pinks for girls," says Ekta Khosla, an interior designer. "Stickers of cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Ben10 are also being used these days. Even carpets, curtains and cushion covers have cartoon characters printed on them and are popular these days," she adds. It is not only about interiors, but goes way beyond and even the lighting is done in a manner to suit the kids. "Bulbs designed in the shape of a man climbing stairs, sitting atop a moon or on a swing make the lighting interesting. Lights in itself look like toys," says Jaspal Kaur, employed at a showroom for lights in Ludhiana. "More and more people are getting rooms designed for their children. These are modified as the child grows. Soft colours are used for toddlers whereas cartoon characters are preferred when a child grows. The rooms for teenagers have posters rather than cartoon characters," says Vineet, an interior designer.

Dress circle
Fashion has its own nuances but those who follow fashion adroitly and mould it to suit their personality are the ones that leave a mark and can be termed as true trendsetters. A student of fashion designing Lakshika Chopra vouches for the right dressing sense. Your sense of style? Cool and free sense of style appeals to me. Also, a person should have a proper dressing sense to be stylish. Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories? A Louis Vuitton bag. Brand crazy or street pick-up? Sometimes brands but mostly I prefer street wear for their versatility. Who would be your style icon? Sonam Kapoor. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity? Can't think of anybody as such. Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous? Chic and glamorous. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension? Piercing in odd places does not seem trendy to me at all. Your take on accessories? They should complement the clothes and never ever overshadow Given a choice which designer would you like to be dressed by? The designer's favourite--Manish Malhotra What gives you a high on the confidence level? I feel that I have a good dressing sense and when I carry off that well, it makes me feel very confident. — As told to Poonam Bindra |

Present perfect
satish narula It’s the season of flower and garden shows. In other words, a festival season for garden lovers. Those who compete in garden shows wait for this moment for one complete year. The winners are elated and those who lose start afresh with a new resolve to do it better next time. And this piece of information about what went wrong is dedicated to those die-hard gardeners. At times, one wonders what went wrong when all the rules of the book were followed at the time of display. But the judges were not convinced. What went wrong? An amateur may not understand but there are some minor things that make all the difference. In fact, before such shows are held, it would be worthwhile to invite the gardeners to interact with experts as this will improve quality of exhibits too. Let us discuss a few points that would be a guideline for future participants. In category of cut flowers, over the years, even amateurs have learnt the art of selecting good quality blooms. But still there are certain things that they are not aware of which do not escape the sharp gaze of the judges. It results in the selection of the best out of bests. At times, some of the best exhibits are rejected by judges due to the presence of insects in blooms. It happens mostly in case of dahlias that are found laden with aphids. Even otherwise deserving good quality blooms are rejected. It may happen in case of roses that have ‘thrips’ in the folds of petals. One should also select only those dahlia blooms that have closed centre. An open centered bloom is considered as ‘over’. Similarly, the blooms that have started seeding should be avoided. It is seen in case of candytuft, antirrhinum and stock larkspur. The length of the bloom spike in case of such flowers is reduced and at the bas e of the stick one can see seed capsules. Such exhibits lose sheen. Another thing that goes the negative way is the presence of blemishes. There is no doubt that bringing cut flowers from distances causes damage to the blooms but then it’s a competition and any blemishes on petals or disarray of petals in displayed blooms have a setback. So do those blooms that are insect- damaged or eaten. For once when the participants lose is due to bad display. The blooms when displayed in good pattern, with blooms facing the judges attract the attention of judges. (Narula ia a senior PAU horticulturist) |

In wonderland
When folktales are told through a riot of colours and canvas takes to the legendary characters, story telling, perhaps, becomes a graphic session. Just as it does in Dhiren Sasmal’s works.
“I can tell a story through my paintings and each of the painting deals with a subject,” shares the Kolkata-based artist, during his second solo show in Chandigarh. There’s a mermaid in one, while a fairy in the other. “I pick up subjects from a child’s perspective. For example, where did a fairy come from? I think that and start painting. What would a child imagine of a mermaid? And painting everything that a mermaid’s life could involve.” He adds, “These days children have instant access to information, so there’s not much scope for imagination. This is just a way of introducing them to the wonderland.” The 15 works involve pen and ink on acrylic on canvas. “This technique and combination takes time but it stands apart.” Moving on, there’s one that paints the picture of an angel, while King brings out the dynamism and power of the one that rules the kingdom, Mermaid stands for nothing short of a still aquarium.” He adds, “Not only children but even adolescents love colours. Just as there are different subjects to be dealt with, there are contrasting colours that need the right treatment to have the desired effect and further lend meaning to any painting.” Peace talk From the vibrancy of colours, a section leads to the serenity of warm tones and monochromes. Moving on, Subrata Ghosh’s 13 pieces are part of one collection, The White, that varies only from the light yellow to the cream. “In my works, I use the layering effect in which a layer after layer of acrylic is applied to achieve a three-dimensional effect,” shares the Kolkata-based artist. The subjects blend with the treatment and together it’s a creation that is both easy on the eye and appeals to the mind. There’s Peace that deals with the calm composure of Gautam Buddha, while Pray paints the picture of Jesus Christ. Yet another titled Prasanna depicts the happy form of Goddess Durga. “I have worked on other subjects also, like humans and animals. Right now, I’m working on compositions of gods and goddesses and trying to depict their dynamism.” manpriya@tribunemail.com On till March 9 at Art Portfolio—9C, Madhya Marg.

A super-hit shake!
Attention! After The Gangnam Style, we bring to you The Harlem Shake—an Internet meme in the form of a video of people performing a skit to the song Harlem Shake. The video was uploaded by five teenagers from Queensland, Australia known on YouTube as The Sunny Coast Skate. The Harlem Shake meme has spread in many countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and much of Europe, Russia and Eastern Europe, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates and Jamaica. Gangnam connection The sound finds a resonating connection with the Gangnam style. However, I love the beats and the fact that it is a happy song. Saurav Gupta, a student Electrifying beat I love it. I think that such erratic dance numbers are catching up with the youth. This song has a goofy kind of feel to it. Sidharth Sharma, Businessman Sounds awesome I love the song. The beats and the psychedelic touch have made it fall in the upcoming genre of wacky trance. Reva Tyagi, a student —As told to Amarjot Kaur |

Sushant & success

Overwhelming responses Everyone is liking the movie, so what more can I ask for? It has been incredible. People have such nice things to say. I have earned a lot from this movie—like a place in the industry, brothers for life, and I shall always cherish the experience of making it. Experiencing adulation I was humbled by the response and love I got from people during the promotions. People have high expectations from me now and I am doing my best Life with Ankita Lokhande She is still part of the TV show we were doing together. She calls me everyday and asks me what she was wearing to check if I have seen it or not. If I do not know, then I get slaughtered! She has been very supportive of my progression into movies. Replacing Shahid Kapoor I respect Shahid Kapoor as an actor, performer and person. I am not doing the film thinking I have replaced Shahid Kapoor. I will make the character my own and I hope Shahid sees the movie and likes everything about it. The film is nearly 70 per cent complete. Future plans Direction interests me. I want to make short films and take them to film festivals. I had planned to take a couple of years off and go to the US for a film-making course but that will not be possible now. So I will just learn from my directors. |

Jacqueline replaces Huma
Sri-Lankan hottie Jacqueline Fernandez proved she can dance in Race 2. She will be seen in an item song in a Prabhudeva movie which is the launch pad for Kumar Taurani's son Girish Taurani. However, she was not the first choice for the item song. Huma Qureshi was.
Our source says, "Huma, who made a splash with the Gangs of Wasseypur movies, could not accommodate the song because of date issues. She is busy with promotions of Ek Thi Daayan and the look tests and pre-production rounds of Dedh Ishqiya. Moreover, this shoot was happening outside Mumbai so she could not have travelled as she has no free dates. So, she had to say no.
Being approached for this song was a big deal for Huma. She has been a fan of Prabhudeva since a young age so it was an honour for her to be choreographed by him.

Getting cozy
Makers of Life Ok show, Junoon are ensuring that they get maximum viewers and so are adding every possible masala to the plot. The show had a fire sequence recently where actors Aditya Redij and Mouni Roy did the stunt scene, while later romance blossomed as Prithvi (Aditya) and Meera (Mouni) share an emotional moment as she kisses him. Apparently a production hand reveals it is always tough to convince actors to do an intimate scene of any degree, be it just a kiss or a consummation.

The year ahead
If your birthday is March 1...
It is a positive year. You can look forward to a comfortable time at the workplace. You will invest in property. Health will remain fine throughout the year. You will be happy and appreciated at work. Finally, your aspirations will be fulfilled; you'll have important contacts, which will give you hope for the future. You'll feel a great urge to confide in your partner and talk about things that have upset you in the past. To win, you must neither use aggression nor arrogance. Indeed, you can obtain great things by being calm. Your apparently weak attitude is your strength and nobody can oppose you. Keep your patience as your continuous efforts coupled with common sense and understanding will guarantee success. You will earn substantial gains if you invest on a long-term basis. Relatives will be willing to give you a helping hand. Romantic feelings will be reciprocated. Opportunities to show your skills will be with you. It is a good year for some recreation and entertainment. Politicians will enhance their prestige in the public eye. For businessmen and professionals, strong Mercury with Sun and Jupiter will give you courage to brave all odds. Those in service will have a satisfactory year. You'll be more eloquent than usual, able to win over new partners and improve your social life by going to new places. A minor misunderstanding can lead to problems with your beloved; try to clarify this immediately to avoid complications. Personal relationships will remain passive. The plans or strategies executed by you will not bring expected results. You have a lot of desires to fulfill, so do not feel disappointed. You'll grab all great work opportunities as they come along. Listen to the advice of an older and wiser friend. Wait until things settle down before you make any commitment. You cannot run away from the truth now that you have come to a turning point. As one door closes, another will open. Your choices will be difficult. You will also argue with your spouse over trivial matters. Children will indulge in deeds, which you may do not approve of. A wedding in family is likely. Mood: In need of balance and discretion
You share your birthday with Justin Drew Bieber (March 1, 1994, London), who is a Canadian pop musician, actor, singer and song-writer.
Bieber was discovered in 2008 by American talent manager Scooter Braun, who came across his videos on YouTube and later became his manager.
